Editor’s Letter With so many variations in terms of use, styling, and functionality, in today’s world the common element among most automobiles is that they roll on four wheels. While they may receive power in the front, rear, or both, the wheels connect to the road with a tire made primarily of rubber. Today, rotors and disks have taken the place of brake drums to bring you to a stop. This issue, Racing Equipment News highlights the latest wheels, tires, and brakes for performance applications on and off the track. Each of these elements allows you to bring your own personal preferences to your vehicle. Wheels and tires can dramatically change the look, but let’s face the facts, it isn’t always about looks. Aftermarket wheels can offer huge weight savings, while also manufactured stronger, and shaped to accommodate larger caliber brake kits. Performance brakes provide improved stopping response under grueling track day heat. Depending on if you are wanting to run down trails to climb some rocks or wanting more grip to shave seconds off your lap times, there are many tire options to choose from. Wheels, tires, and brakes allow the driver to maintain control. Remember, in motion a mere inch or two is all that connects you to the road. Improving traction and eliminating brake fade can make the difference between crossing the finish line or becoming far too acquainted with an outside wall. Don’t forget - Follow Racing Equipment News on social media for all the latest updates and to share your own wheels, tires, and brakes.

Nick Boliek Editorial Director NEXT STAGE - VOL. 5 ISSUE 3 - Drivetrain, Suspension, and Chassis Steering columns, driveshafts, axles, suspension systems, race-built chassis, and everything needed to transfer your car or truck’s power is what we will focus on next issue. You won’t want to miss it.

WINNING RACES on BASSETT WHEELS

B

assett Racing Wheel is known throughout the racing world as an undisputed leader in steel racing wheels, but it did not happen overnight. Basset Racing Wheels have over 50 years of experience building wheels exclusively for race cars.

RACING WHEEL PIONEERS In 1965, Stan Baumel founded Wheel Specialties, Inc. in a small shop in Bassett, Wisconsin (left). Back then, stock car racers didn’t have a racingspecific wheel available. They had to use OEM highway wheels, which were not able to handle the incredible forces generated by a 4,000-pound stock car going through a corner. Stan knew he could 10

build a better wheel and began fabricating wheels for his brother, Larry Baumel, who raced in the NASCAR Grand National divison, now Sprint Cup series. Stan’s wheels were lighter and stronger than the OEM wheels and by the late 1970’s and early 80’s, top midwestern late model drivers like Dick Trickle, Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace were winning races on Bassett Wheels. Word continued to spread South, and soon drivers like Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt (below) started using Bassett Wheels on their short track cars. The newfound popularity in the South led to Bassett entering the NASCAR Winston Cup market in 1987. Alan Kulwicki used Bassett Racing Wheels to record his first career Cup victory at Phoenix International Raceway in 1988. Since then, Bassett Racing Wheels have won multiple Winston (now Monster Energy) Cup, Busch (now Xfinity) Series and Craftsman (now Camping World) Truck

Series Championships, including Christopher Bell in 2017. To keep up with demand and to guarantee a higher level of quality than their competitors could deliver, we built a 10,000 square foot facility in 1992. The building, located in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, was equipped with the most advanced production machinery available. Many of the machines are custom-built and designed specifically for steel race wheel production. While their founders roots were in pavement racing, Bassett Racing Wheel realized there was a need for a high quality

dirt track wheel. Soon after moving into the Twin Lakes facility, Bassett introduced a beaded version of their 15x8 D-Hole Lightweight wheel for the IMCA, WISSOTA and UMP dirt modified markets. Weighing only 16-pounds, it was the first dirt track racing wheel to use a light but strong CNC spun form rim shell.

CONTINUED GROWTH NASCAR success and dirt track sales growth led to a need for more wheel components and control of the supply chain. In 1998, Bassett took its rim shell production inhouse by investing in the latest metal spin forming technology. This investment has led to significant improvements in component consistency and production efficiency. After one expansion at their Twin Lakes facility doubled the space, continued sales growth fueled a need for an even larger

facility in 2001 and built a state-of-the-art plant in Burlington, Wisconsin that measures 50,000 square feet. The extra space allowed Bassett to add second and third metal spinning lines, two more wheel welding lines, an in-house powder coat paint line, chrome finishing and additonal warehouse inventory. Today, Bassett Racing Wheel stands head and shoulders above the competition in terms of technology, quality and customer service. Bassett proudly manufactures all its products in Burlington, Wisconsin from domestically-sourced raw materials.

Konig Hexaform

The Hexaform is a new six-spoke design built with flow-forming technology. Available in a new Matte Bronze and Matte Black finish! Konig has integrated feedback from their motorsport teams, racers and drivers into both of our new designs this year. Konig has pushed the face out and allowed for as much brake caliper protrusion as well as overall brake diameter near the drop center. This provides excellent caliper clearance for big brake cars and aftermarket big brake kits.

After more than 25 years of producing the most highly regarded and technically advanced wheels for professional road racing applications, Forgeline has directed their experience and capability toward the drag racing industry and developed the all-forged GS1R Beadlock wheel. Unlike most traditional drag racing wheels, Forgeline’s forged monoblock single beadlock GS1R Beadlock wheel is carved entirely in one piece from a single forging of 6061-T6 aluminum using an advanced precision machining process. Featuring a forged aluminum ring that holds the tire securely in place, to limit unwanted tire slip against the wheel, and to keep the tire from unseating, at very high speeds. Control at

HIGH SPEEDS Over 40 years’ experience in motorsports transferred to Brembo’s new braking products for track use

B

rembo is introducing its new Pista | FF calipers in its UPGRADE catalog. These are the first members of a new family of racing calipers designed to offer a high level of performance on the track at an accessible price to the everyday enthusiast. Brembo has used its extensive experience in racing to create a family of uniquely designed forged calipers which guarantee the strength, light weight and design typically associated with motorsports.

Track days, which involve track driving for owners of high-performance cars, have become increasingly popular over the last few years. Brembo has engineered a stopping solution that is easy to install for

those who are passionate about beating the stopwatch and want more control at high speeds, faster cornering and the best braking response. The Pista | FF family makes its debut with a 6-piston caliper called the FF6 and a 4-piston caliper named the FF4. These new line of brake calipers are ideal for use on the track allowing drivers to get the most out of their cars under extreme conditions in a constant search for the best lap time. The new Brembo Pista | FF calipers have carefully engineered internal brake fluid ducts that channels the brake fluid for maximum pressure and bleedability of the system. In addition, they also have a brake pad rapid release system, used in endurance racing, for replacing the brake pads quickly

and safely without having to remove the caliper from the hub carrier. From an aesthetic point of view, the new calipers in the Pista | FF family resemble the brake systems that Brembo customer teams use at Le Mans and Daytona. They have a forged asymmetric body with a fixed tangential bridge. The quick release system can be replaced with fixed elements to increase rigidity for sprint applications. The new calipers are compatible with a wide range of discs and pads already available on the market. Brembo is already working on new calipers for the Pista family so that it can offer a full range of systems to those who want to maximize track performance at competitive prices.

AMSOIL’s DOMINATOR DOT 4 Synthetic Racing Brake Fluid High boiling points resist brake fade and vapor lock

A

MSOIL synthetic brake fluids surpass Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and provide racers with a brake fluid that delivers superior high-temperature performance preventing brake fade and vapor lock.

Firm Pedal Feel The extreme pressure and high heat common to brake systems can push brake

fluid beyond its boiling point, causing it to vaporize or “boil-off.” Water contamination can accelerate the process. This leads to a spongy or unresponsive feeling in the brake pedal (vapor lock). In contrast, the unique chemistry behind AMSOIL synthetic brake fluids increases boiling points well beyond DOT standards, even when contaminated with 3.7 percent water. AMSOIL Brake Fluids maintain a stable viscosity over a wide temperature range and flow easily at the high pressures generated in today’s automotive brake systems to deliver solid, reliable braking. A nitrogen blanket is added to each bottle during manufacturing to purge

low compressibility during the most extreme racing conditions. *Dry equilibrium reflux boiling point (ERBP) the boiling point of new, freshly opened brake fluid. **Wet ERBP the boiling point of brake fluid having absorbed 3.7 percent water. Only 3.7 percent water contamination is often sufficient to reduce a DOT 3 fluid’s boiling point below the DOT minimum.

APPLICATIONS Use AMSOIL DOMINATOR® DOT 4 Synthetic Racing Brake Fluid in racing applications that require a DOT 4 product. Change fluid once a year for maximum performance.

HEALTH & SAFETY This product is not expected to cause health concerns when used for the intended applications and according to the recommendations in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Tire Purger/Dryer Helps Racers Tire Purger/Dryer Helps Pro Road Racers Control Setup Variables

Control Setup Variables In order for high-performance tires to work as designed, they must operate within a particular temperature range. This means anticipating pressure growth is essential to maintain a well-handling racecar from green to checkered flag. The Intercomp Tire Purging/Drying System provides a racer the ability to control tire pressure growth throughout an on-track session. Joe Kantarik, a veteran crew chief and team manager, tells how the Tire Purging/Drying System helped the Minnesota-based Banner Engineering Race team compete in professional sports car series, including Trans Am and Grand Am.

“You had to roll off the trailer with a setup that was in the ballpark. With limited track time at most races, there isn’t time to build a competitive chassis setup from scratch. Intercomp’s Tire Purging/ Drying System allowed the team and driver to understand if a particular adjustment improved performance, or not.” – Joe Kantarik, Crew Chief/Team Manager – Banner Racing
