Why This Latest DEF Innovation Is a

GAME CHANGER for Diesel Engines – Including Your Tow Vehicle

M

odern diesel exhaust systems are complex, technologically advanced and include multiple sub systems. Point of fact, today’s advanced diesel systems have resulted in an over 90 percent decrease in exhaust emissions since the 1990’s. What does this mean to race car haulers? Nearly every diesel-powered

vehicle built since 2010 (yes, including hauler vehicles) is equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), meaning they require Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to function. DEF is used to help break down toxic Nitrous Oxide emissions by converting them to water and nitrogen. DEF is classified as a non toxic organic compound, and 10

is carefully regulated by the American Petroleum Institute. Without DEF, race car haulers would be exposed to a number of complex problems. To put it simply, if the DEF warning is ignored, the vehicle will cease to work. Some diesel engine manufacturers allow the engine to go into reduced power mode, limiting the number of times you can turn the engine over. Inevitably, at some point the diesel engine will not start and the vehicle will be left with costly repairs across the board. However, not just any DEF will do. Since the inception of SCR, there have been issues with deposit build-up, especially with low quality DEF. Low speed operation, extended idling, short trip, and stop and go driving can prevent the SCR system from reaching and maintaining optimal temperatures and result in deposit buildup. Deposit buildup can choke off the exhaust system causing a reduction of power and economy. Once this buildup accumulates, it can require time consuming dis-assembly, mechanical cleaning or component replacement to make the system functional again.

Deposit build-up can lead to back pressure, resulting in increased fuel consumption and reduced engine power - not ideal for haulers. Worse case, the hauler engine can de-rate to a crawl or completely shut down until repairs are made, leaving the vehicle dead on the road. Since these deposits cannot be removed and can lead to costly repairs, the industry has been looking for a breakthrough for the past several years. years ago, in 1986, IDIDIT was founded from a passion for hot rods and classic vehicles. The company started in the garage of our founder, Ken Callison. Ken was a true hot rodder at heart and started by manufacturing one-off trick parts for hot rods.

Ken was asked by a fellow hot rodder if he could make a billet aluminum tilt steering column. As word spread of these columns, the demand amongst friends grew. Ken started taking these columns to local swap meets to sell them as well. One day while at a swap meet a gentleman walked up to their table and picked up a piece and asked who made it, Ken replied “I did”. The man went on to pick up several more pieces asking the same thing and received the same answer. The man finally said to Ken “No way, you’re not smart enough to make stuff this nice”. Ken had enough and reached across the table grabbed 14

Subframe Connector System

To bridge the unsupported distance between the front subframe and the rear suspension, multiple styles of mandrel-bent 2x2” subframe connectors are available for bolt-in installation with factory or Chassisworks’ front subframes. A bolt-in, factory-welded, center support with optional driveshaft loop can also be added to further stiffen the chassis and strengthen the lower suspension mounting area.

How do they do it? Strange Pro Race Axles are made from a steel alloy that was originally intended for use in military aircraft landing gear. Hy-Tuf is in a class of ultra-strength alloys configured with a low concentration of carbon and high degrees of manganese, nickel, and molybdenum steel. Strange Pro Race Axles are through-hardened to a tensile strength of 240,000 psi allowing them to retain the necessary degree of ductility required for elite level drag racing. Strange Pro Race 40-Spline gun-drilled axles are ten-percent lighter and 54-percent stronger than 35-spline solid axles. Gun-drilling is a process of removing the core of the axle shaft and leaving a .875-inch hole. Five 1-inch diameter holes are drilled in the axle flange to further reduce rolling mass. Strange 40-Spline gun-drilled axles are rated for vehicles that weigh 3,500-pounds or more and can post quarter-mile elapsed times of less than seven seconds. Strange 2-piece axles are used by NHRA pros like Pro Stock Champions Greg Anderson, Allen Johnson, Jason Line,

and Erica Enders. The Strange 2-piece axle is stronger and safer than a conventional 1-piece axle with larger, double row ball-bearings housed in 3.5-inch outside diameter (1.968-inch inside diameter) aluminum cartridge. This lightweight design promotes low friction and reduces wheel deflection. ACT Releases SFI-Approved Pressure Plate for 06-15 Mazda MX-5 Miata Applications Advanced Clutch Technology (ACT) has released the new MZ032 Pressure Plate. The MZ032 features a more efficient cover design, resulting in better release and pedal feel. This Pressure Plate replaces the MZ018 in the ZM4 and ZM5 Series Kits. All other Kit Components remain the same (see spec sheet for detailed application listings). ACT’s ZM4 and ZM5 Clutch Kits for the Mazda MX-5 Miata NC Cars include a Heavy Duty Pressure Plate, a choice of Disc, Release and Pilot Bearing and an Alignment Tool. The Heavy Duty Pressure Plate incorporates hardened diaphragm fingers for decreased wear and provides a 34% increase in clamp

force over the stock unit. The ACT Street Clutch Kits combine the Heavy Duty Pressure Plate with a Performance Organic Street Disc. The disc features premium organic friction materials able to withstand increased heat and abuse, steel-backed linings for high-burst strength and modifications engineered for quicker shifting. The kit provides a moderate and consistent pedal feel, smooth engagement, and significantly improved durability. These kits meet SFI Spec 1.1 and have increased torque capacity up to 281 FT-LB. The ACT Race Clutch Kits combine the Heavy Duty Pressure Plate with a Cerametallic Xtreme Race Disc, which is available in 6-Pad Spring-Centered and Rigid Hub Designs. These discs are highly durable while allowing for

quick shifting. The Xtreme Race Discs are for high-powered engines and recommended for track use only. The ACT Race Clutch Kits meet SFI Spec 1.1 and are rated to hold up to 359 FT-LB of torque at the crank. The SFI-Approved Streetlite Flywheel is designed for performance and affordability without compromising a smooth idle. This one-piece, forged Chromoly Steel Flywheel is CNC machined and features inductionhardened, integral ring gear for increased durability. ACT Flywheels are engineered for strength and allow cost-effective resurfacing.

Driver and spectator safety are a top priority at ACT. Each ACT Flywheel is certified to meet SFI Specification 1.1 standards, making them legal for competition where SFI 1.1 certification is required or recommended. XACT flywheels come complete with an official SFI sticker and serial number, as required for certification. The 601140 XACT Streetlite Flywheel weighs 10.4 pounds, which is 35% lighter than the Stock Flywheel. This Flywheel provides quicker engine response and acceleration, while being significantly lighter than Stock.

Sports was founded by Darrell and Darrick Contreras as a high quality designer and manufacturer of performance products to address the developing Sport Compact Market.

In 1987, American Honda commissioned DC Sports to develop a header for their SCCA prepped CRX’s and the result cumulated was our first 4 into 1 header design. It was so well received that Honda requested headers for other applications. That system is the one that started it all (HHC5002). The Sport Compact Market was primarily based on popular Japanese small cars that were great cars to begin with, but also excellent platforms for various tuning modifications. Throughout the 1990s, DC Sports was synonymous with Honda and Acura performance and in the early 2000’s started expanding into other sport compact platforms. DC Sports developed unique designs that performed better and therefore became the brand of choice for serious enthusiasts. 66
