Vaca Brava Rancho Jibaro Cuisine
Brought to you from the mountain town of Barranquitas (pg. 55), Vaca Brava serves heaping portions of goodness with a heartfelt jibaro hospitality and, apparently, a genuine worry that you haven’t eaten for a week! It’s not just a show, the wait staff is an extended clan of genuine country folk that drives into the city daily. Family owned and oriented, Vaca Brava also takes pride in its kids menu and affordable prices. This Puerto Rican favorite lives and breathes the rancho theme adhering to farm-to-table values and putting its own tongue in cheek twist on “elevated cuisine” by propping gargantuan portions of savory meats on vertical wiring. The dishes themselves are grandiose odes to local comfort food. Chicken, wrapped in churrasco, wrapped in bacon and smothered in cheddar cheese? Of Course! Try it family style or go for it solo with classic dishes like mofongo or carne frita. Kick back with a refreshing mojito menu with flavors like mango, strawberry and the shockingly good, apple (trust us). This appropriately roomy space is perfect for large groups or activities and catering services are available. Shrimp Mofongo smashed plantain with large shrimps l El Tenedero chicken breast, churrasco, ribs, chorizo, steak l La Vaca Ensaltá skirt steak stuffed with chorizo l El Chillo de la Vaca whole fried snapper, chimi sauce over mofongo l Los Cuernos de la Vaca (The Horns) Flap meat roll stuffed, fresh chicken breast wrapped with bacon, mushroom, cheese sauce

Pirilo Pizza Rustica
ocean park Some restaurants were born to be the stuff of legends and Pirilo is undeniably just that. This story begins with its own concocted mythology of a bold little boy that won the heart of his beloved and ends with a boldly flavored pizza that won the hearts of the people. An ode to the Italian immigrants of Latin America, Pirilo uses the spirit of innovation and adaptation to combine Italian, Argentinian and Puerto Rican flavors into its unique pizza and a full menu that serves you sausages, octopus and empanadillas. It is quite possibly the Island’s best pie and worth the trip on that distinction alone, but Pirilo is a moxie boy with big ambitions and has set out to also be one of the most talked about restaurants in town. With a retro decor of mementos and baubles, Pirilo is a faux museum to its own urban legend, using whimsical pop decoration in both of its locations to evoke a timeless feel. With a large artisanal beer menu and a killer house sangria, Pirilo is a guaranteed good time!

The plantain is ever present and at the heart of our cuisine and you won’t find an individual who understands that as well as chef/restaurateur, Rafael Hidalgo. El Platanal takes our local cuisine’s reverence of the fruit and makes it a religion. Mashed, smashed or shredded, you will find it here in plantain baskets to plantain sandwiches stuffed with a dozen plus choices of savory seafoods and meats (we are partial to the homemade salami). The tastefully decorated theme setting makes use of bamboo, wood and of course, hanging plantains. Family friendly and with two locations to choose from, come and try the ultimate local experience.

La Concha, A Renaissance Resort. Group Services, Inc. Tour: Catamaran Snorkeling Restaurant: Ropa Vieja’s bacalao guisado (stewed codfish) with breadfruit tostones. Anecdote: Recently a couple celebrating their honeymoon booked 3 tours with us. They came back from each tour full of joy and happiness, they expressed that everything was perfect. Their best experience was on the Romantic Sunset sail of Old San Juan, the guest captured footage of the sunset as he sailed with his wife that evening, it almost brought tears to his eyes.

El San Juan Resort and Casino. Group Services, Inc. Tour: Catamaran Culebra Island Snorkeling Restaurant: Miami Meat Market. Yucca Mofongo with Kobi steak. Anecdote: I had a family of guests that their mom just passed away therefore, they needed an escape from that horrible moment. When they got to the hotel we had decorated the room for them and had some nice amenities on the room. These little details made all the difference for them which, they made them fell at home. I assisted them all week in their endeavors and was part of their lives for an instance, I’m honored to know that I was able to make them get away from their loss at least for a short time.

Tour: Hiking to the Waterfall La Mina Restaurant: Zest, Watermelon Capresse Salad Anecdote: On Christmas 2014 I met three sisters, each of them traveled from different corners of the world to reunite at the Water Club for the holidays. I was immediately fascinated by their story and we connected right away. They were so fun and adventurous, they did almost every tour we had. When they checked out, shared hugs but much to my surprise, they brought me a gorgeous red gown from a boutique nearby. I couldn’t stop the tears of joy from falling. I took a picture and sent them a post card to their homes in Switzerland, Lebanon and Oklahoma. Making everlasting impressions and living up to people expectations is my passion and why I love my job.

Caribe Hilton Hotel & Casino Group Services, Inc. Tour: Culebra Island Boat Tour Restaurant: Bar Gitano Anecdote: Once, I had a family that lost a child and came to Puerto Rico to get away from all the stress and sadness they were going thru. I booked some tours for them and made great restaurant reservations. They were so happy at the end of their stay the whole family passed by to thank me for all the assistance I provided. It surprised me that something so little made this family’s negative experience disappear at least for a few days and this brought me joy. She was so in love with our service and our Island she came back, this time with all of her Corporation. The best perk of being a Concierge is making people happy and getting to visit the whole island and its wonders.
Michelle Davila
Sheraton Old San Juan Group Services, Inc. Tour: Biobay at Fajardo Restaurant: Don Pepe & Ali Baba Anecdote: I had a guest that brought with him a list of activities that he needed/had to do while in Puerto Rico. He requested my assistance in booking some tours, car rental, restaurants reservations etc. He had been staying with us for ten days in which we talked a lot and developed a friendship. What made him unforgettable was that on his last day, as he was thanking me for all that I did for him (recommendations, reservations and just for having taking time to talk) he started to tear up and told me that the reason he came to the island was as a final good bye to his partner of 17 years who had passed away. They had visited once before but always wanted to come back and do the list that they had done on their first trip but never got the chance to do. This melted my heart and I understood the importance and significance that us concierge have in a guest life even if it’s from afar.

Each day is a memorable one for me. I am lucky to be working in this industry where passion meets adventure. I couldn’t understand why he asked for me to do this since he clearly had a lot of friends at the hotel attending the wedding. I guess that I love my job so much people feel like I’m their friend instead of their employee, I have guests that keep in touch with me through social sites and share their lives with me. It makes me really happy that they develop that feeling for me in such short time.

Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino Group Services, Inc. Tour: Icacos Catamaran Snorkeling Restaurant: Oceano. Mofongo filled with skirt steak. Anecdote: A Gentleman came in from another hotel asking me for assistance since he wanted to go on a boat tour (anything on a boat) but he was in a wheelchair. I started doing my research until I found a company that was willing to assist him. Next day he came back with tears of happiness because out of 9 hotel concierge he visited I was the only one that went above and beyond to make it happen. Meeting and exceeding people needs and expectations is one of my passions and is very gratifying when someone tells you, it was all possible because of you, and you made this experience the best one ever.
