Wafflehouse + Tea + Coffee

Waffle-era tea room

PALIO is a Puerto Rican Fusion menu with a great selection of quality meats and sustainable fish. Try Pork “Pinchos” on the bone with a honey pepper pique or Seafood Palio with mussels, clams, scallops and sautéed shrimp in roasted garlic butter over lobster ravioli. Dine on the outdoor patio overlooking the bay with a house specialty Pineapple Mojito! The Island’s first siphon fire-brewed Coffee, first steeped tea room and first gourmet wafflehouse, Waffle-era is more interested in blazing trails than standing quietly in a niche corner. It is a case study in the bohemian culinary culture of the Old City, fusing an eclectic scramble of ritualistic traditionalism and industrial steampunk for a unique arthouse-brunch experience. The love child of Pamela Calderón and Ricardo Figueroa, Waffle-era uses gourmet ingredients and preparations to top its signature waffle batter that pairs equally well with sweet or savory toppings. Gaining international attention and a local cult following, Waffle-era is one those things in life you just shouldn’t miss.

CHICAGO BURGER Co. serves a variety of Angus Beef options at an indoor-outdoor location in front of the San Juan Harbor. You can try the Jibarito Burger with native cheese, plantains & creole sauce or indulge in the CBC burger with caramelized onions, sherry mushrooms, cheese and bacon.

Barrachina

For over 50 years Barrachina, the world famous inventor of the Piña Colada has been a perfect choice for Old City strollers. Named after a Spanish chef who was dubbed the “king of paellas”, Barrachina is the epitome of local cuisine fusing traditional Spanish, & North Caribbean flavors. Set in a 17th century garden patio and with Flamenco shows on weekend nights, this spot captures the town’s vibe like no other place. Frozen drink menu includes mojitos and, of course, the Piña Coladas which really are the best you will ever have. Pirilo

Pizza Rustica

Some restaurants were born to be the stuff of legends and Pirilo is undeniably just that. This story begins with its own concocted mythology of a bold little boy that won the heart of his beloved and ends with a boldly flavored pizza that won the hearts of the people. An ode to the Italian immigrants of Latin America, Pirilo uses the spirit of innovation and adaptation to combine Italian, Argentinian and Puerto Rican flavors into its unique pizza and a full menu that serves you sausages, octopus or empanadillas. It is quite possibly the Island’s best pie and worth the trip on that distinction alone, but Pirilo is a moxie boy with big ambitions and has set out to also be one of the most talked about restaurants in town. With a decoration of retro mementos and baubles, Pirilo is a faux museum to its own urban legend, using the Old San Juan architecture to evoke the feel of a restaurant that has been there forever. With over 30 artisanal beers on tap and a killer sangria, little Pirilo’s antics have outgrown its original location and has a new location in Ocean Park. Butternut Squash Ravioli l Pirilo Pizza house tomato sauce, mozzarella, ground beef, ripe plantains l 7 Quesos Pizza fontina, mozzarella, provolone, cheddar, Muenster, manchego, ricotta l La Pampa Homemade tomato sauce, mozzarella, Argentinian sausage, skirt steak, chimichurri sauce

Family Style Steak

Vaca Brava

Vaca Brava is the restaurant with a legend so large, Man v.s. Food came to challenge it. This Puerto Rican favorite puts its own twist on “elevated cuisine” by propping gargantuan family style portions of savory meats on vertical wiring. Originating in the mountain town of Barranquitas, Vaca Brava serves with a genuine heartfelt jibaro hospitality that resonates with the festive atmosphere. The dishes are grandiose odes to comfort food. Chicken, wrapped in churrasco, wrapped in bacon and smothered in cheddar cheese? Duh, of course! You might want to bring a large party to help you finish it and this 2 story building is perfect for large parties. Pablo Mármol (Barney Rubble) whole rib rack with french fries l El Tótem de la Vaca (Totem of the Cow) chicken breast wrapped in skirt steak and bacon with tostones l El Chillo de la Vaca whole fried snapper, chimi sauce over mofongo Los Cuernos de la Vaca (The Horns) Flap meat roll stuffed, fresh

A perfectly selected wine list completes the ensemble at one of the most critically acclaimed culinary destinations on the island. Thoroughly Old San Juan, Al Dente exudes an artists’ heart, with paintings by Margie Alcaraz adorning the walls. Across the street from Doña Fela parking with outdoor seating available.

Old San Juan Old San Juan is a bohemian paradise. A fairy tale for party goers with its blue cobblestone streets and its history of artists and beatniks. From Calle 13 to Hunter S. Thompson this cluster of twisting 19th century buildings resting on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is one of the most vibrant towns in the world. Cultural roots run deep here, as evidenced by yearly events like the Sofo Culinary Festival (first weekend of December) and the

Fiestas de La Calle San Sebastian; a carnival-esque 4-day party taking place the

3rd week of January. There is something going on every day, from comedy clubs to children’s theater, but its’ the vibrant globality of the nightlife that keeps the streets packed. For live music, our insider picks include the sexiest club on the island, La Factoria on San Sebastian Street. With 3 different areas; a gastro bar, a wine bar and a dance floor, this place is the epitome of hot Caribbean nights. Right across the street is Taberna Lupulo, the island’s top craft beer garden. Around the corner on Cristo St. is the city’s most storied dive bar; the graffiti walled El Batey. Looking for a show? Flamenco @ Barrachina on weekend nights.

Making it down to San Francisco street we find Dos Cuernitos, a popular locals bar serving dozens of varieties of “chichaitos” (akin to rum-fire water). Blessed Cafe has the best reggae night in town on Saturdays when owner/ drummer Anthony whips his crowd into an island vibe. Just off this street lies Salsa mecca Neyorican Cafe, where live Salsa and Latin Jazz acts play almost nightly.

Known for its classic glitz, Isla Verde is home to many of the poshest hotels on the island. Even the locals come to the hotel lobbies and terraces for a ritzy night on the town The sexiest hotel on the island, the Water Club Hotel, has Mist a gorgeous rooftop lounge with DJ’s and socializers-a menu of small plates made to share and mingle with. Club Brava at the El San Juan Hotel & Casino has been a staple of Puerto Rican nightlife for decades and continues to get the crowds all weekend. Picante at the Lobby of the Isla Verde Courtyard Marriott has free Salsa dancing lessons on Thursdays. Looking for Karaoke? Taigüey in Punta Las Marias has a loyal following and a beach bar crowd. Around the Island

“Where the locals go” is what everybody wants to know and the answer to that is La Placita de Santurce, a couple blocks of watering holes standing elbow to elbow, making for the Island’s most satisfying bar crawl. A peculiar place that serves as farmer’s market for locally grown fruits and vegetables during the day and takes on a festival type atmosphere on nights, especially Fridays. Local bites can be found from street “pinchos” to little foodie spots ranging from Thai to Cuban and some of the Island’s top restaurants. Strolling up Canal Street you’ll find El Bar Rubi the 2nd oldest continuous running bar on the island, refurbished into a little electronic haven playing deep house ‘til late. In the central plaza is the 2nd floor of Asere, loungy and hip, offering a view of the madness below.

From the surfer bars of the Northwest to the college atmosphere of Mayagüez. From the beautiful crowds of Ponce to the after work festivities of Hato Rey and Guaynabo. The entire Island of Puerto Rico can be described as one big party. Live music and dancing can be found everywhere, in every town. In Guaynabo there is plenty of pub hopping but our choice is the great happy hours on margaritas at Chilango Mexican Grill. Shannon’s Irish Pub is a massive structure & the best sports bar on the Island.

Another popular street just off the beaten path is hipster haven Loiza Street. Dotted with after hours and swanky bars, it tends to run cheaper than upscale Condado, which it adjoins with. Candela’s is the new hot spot with an assortment of house shots make it one of the wilder hangouts in town. Loiza 2050 is pizzeria by week, but Sunday nights hosts some of the top electronica acts on the Island. Also on Sundays nights, Pa’al Cielo gets it moving with live DJ’s. The next street down you have Mango’s, offering 2x1 drinks on Tuesdays and live music on Thursdays. Further into Santurce is the Island’s cultural mecca,

Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré, hosting

classical music concerts, theater and other artistic events. It is most famous for its yearly classical music Pablo Casals Festival, taking place over several weeks during February and March. La Pregunta is famous for its Monday Night Hip Hop and variety of concerts.

58

Moving Eastward, Thursday Jazz Nights @ Don Pepe are the smoothest thing going in Rio Grande. In Palmas del Mar, Humacao, C-Bar is the best lounge in the East with great cocktails and Chihuahua Grill gets packed. The sleepy surfer towns along the Northwest have tons of ex-pats and an international vibe. Carlos Fred in Aguada serves some nice cocktails to a beautiful crowd. The Villa Cofresi provides a sweet little pool bar that‘s open at night and serves the lethal Coco Pirata house drink. Cowboys’ cantina provide a proper country feel and does karaoke. The Ø Lounge in Isabela is trendy with a view. In Ponce you can try the Viva Casino at the Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino. Quenepa is nice pub in center of town and Wednesday nights at Hollywood is a

famous live band show just outside of town. In the Famous town of Boquerón you live music at Los Remos and La Marea Eat & Drink is the #1 beer tavern in the area.
