Sketchbooks Carlos Grangel Exhibit / Mostra Carlos Grangel

A brilliant artist with an immediately recognizable touch, Carlos Grangel has more than 25 Oscar-worthy feature films under his belt, including Balto, The Road to El Dorado, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Prince of Egypt, Hotel Transylvania, Dragon Trainer, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Ron’s Gone Wrong, and many more; his work, always as a Character Designer, includes the most cult animation film of recent years: Corpse Bride by the wonderful director Tim Burton.

The maestro Carlos Grangel will be the subject of an anthological exhibition of his most significant works and his unique way of making art, which has indelibly marked the history of the greatest films of contemporary animation. The exhibition will be totally ‘sustainable’; indeed all the works will be reproduced digitally on different recycled materials. Unique pieces printed in different sizes and textures depending on the character of the work and its protagonists. The idea was born from an oddity which emerged from an interview with Carlos Grangel, in which he explained his habit, virtually a part of his creative process, of making the first sketches of a character on any recycled material at hand (for example, the back of cardboard cereal boxes) and how even the type of material on which he draws helps a character to take on body and life, its expressions, its “colours”, its unique and irreplaceable quirks …

To give birth to new characters by drawing on different materials, rigorously recycled, appears to fuel Grangel’s creativity and… judging from the amazing results… we can say that it works!

In the same vein, we have tried to create an exhibition dedicated to some of his most famous films using various media for the printed material, following the inspiration of the various works, their narrative thread, and the “substance” of their main characters. Geniale artista dal tratto immediatamente riconoscibile, Carlos Grangel con Oltre 25 lungometraggi «da Oscar» all’attivo tra cui Balto, La strada per El Dorado, Sinbad: la leggenda dei sette mari, Spirit: cavallo selvaggio, Il Principe d’Egitto, Hotel Transylvania, Dragon Trainer, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, Ron: un amico fuori programma e molti altri; annovera tra le suo opere, sempre in qualità di Character Designer, anche il film d’animazione più cult degli ultimi anni: La Sposa Cadavere del mirabolante regista Tim Burton.

Al Maestro Carlos Grangel sarà dedicata una mostra antologica dei suoi lavori più significativi e del suo modo unico di fare arte, che ha segnato in maniera indelebile la storia dei più grandi film dell’animazione contemporanea. La mostra sarà totalmente ‘sostenibile’, tutte le opere infatti saranno riprodotte digitalmente su diversi materiali riciclati. Pezzi unici stampati in misure e su texture diverse a seconda del “carattere” dell’opera e dei suoi protagonisti. L’idea nasce da una curiosità riportata nell’intervista realizzata a Carlos Grangel, in cui spiega la sua abitudine, quasi come parte del suo processo creativo, di realizzare i primi schizzi di un personaggio, su qualsiasi materiale da riciclo che si trovi a portata di mano (ad esempio il retro delle confezioni di cartone dei cereali) e come anche il tipo di materiale su cui disegna serva a far prendere corpo e vita ad un personaggio, alle sue espressioni ai suoi «colori», alle sue peculiarità uniche e insostituibili …

Far nascere e far muovere i primi passi a nuovi personaggi, disegnando su materiali diversi, rigorosamente riciclati, sembra quindi servire ad alimentare la creatività di Grangel e… a giudicare dai suoi strepitosi risultati… possiamo senza dubbio affermare che funziona!

Nello stesso modo abbiamo cercato di realizzare una mostra dedicata ad alcuni dei suoi film più conosciuti, usando vari supporti per la stampa, seguendo l’estro delle varie opere, il loro filo narrativo e la «sostanza» dei loro personaggi principali.
