Barry JC Purves in an Oscar and BAFTA nominated Animator and Director. As well as his film work, he directs and designs for theatre and writes about, teaches and promotes the art of animation. His work is acclaimed internationally and has won many awards. In all his shorts and films, Purves focuses on the role of the identity and on the evolution of his characters, playing with music, theatre, cinema and literature: from Verdi to Tchaikowsky, from Achilles to his new, “No Ordinary Joe”. The result of Barry’s narratives, epic and elegant at the same time, matches sublime animated inventions with intimate sound landscapes. His relationship with the puppet, leading protagonist of all his stories, is always magical, unique and unrepeatable in nowadays film and animation industry. For Cartoons on the Bay, he will be protagonist of an intense retrospective and in his masterclass “The fluid spaces of Barry P” he will deepen into his daily work either for films and theatre pieces than for directing, in particular using stop motion animation and stage performances.

Barry JC Purves è un animatore e un regista nominato agli Oscar e ai BAFTA. Oltre che per il cinema dirige, progetta e scrive per il teatro, insegna e promuove l’arte dell’animazione. Il suo lavoro è acclamato in tutto il mondo e nella sua carriera ha vinto numerosi premi. In tutti i suoi lavori, Purves riflette sul ruolo dell’identità personale e sull’evoluzione interiore dei propri personaggi giocando con la musica, il teatro, il cinema e la letteratura: da Verdi a Tchaikovsky, da Achille al più recente “No Ordinary Joe”. Il risultato, allo stesso tempo elegante ed epico dei suoi racconti, unisce sublimi invenzioni animate e intimi paesaggi sonori. Il suo rapporto con il burattino, strumento principe delle sue storie, è magico in ogni sua opera, unico e irripetibile nel mondo del cinema e dell’animazione contemporanea. Per Cartoons on the Bay, sarà protagonista di una ricca retrospettiva e nella sua masterclass “Lo spazio fluido di Barry P” approfondisce il lavoro quotidiano del suo studio sia per film che per piéces e la sua regia, in particolare per l’animazione stop motion e per le stage performance. Because of his indisputable ability to use the language of cartoons in a crystal-clear way to transmit non-negotiable messages and values to the new generations and for having become an educational point of reference for the new generations of animation artists. An Italian point of reference and pride for the whole world.

Per la indiscutibile capacità di usare in modo cristallino il linguaggio del cartone animato, per trasmettere alle nuove generazioni messaggi e valori non negoziabili e per essere diventato ormai un punto di riferimento didattico delle nuove generazioni di artisti dell’animazione. Punto di riferimento e orgoglio italiano nel mondo.

It is very easy to exalt the figure of a great artist when only a professional relationship has been established. When this artist is also a friend, the affair becomes more difficult since there is always the fear of being overwhelmed by a feeling which leads to involuntary exaggeration. Maurizio Sestieri is a great artist and also a great friend, but I am not afraid to exaggerate if I say that he is one of the most important figures in the history of Italian animation of the last thirty years. A director, and a storyboarder who trained under such luminaries as Bruno Bozzetto, Guido Manuli, Pierluigi De Mas, and Emanuele Luzzati, Forestieri is one of those figures whose name can be mentioned internationally to bring credibility and authority to the Italian animation sector anywhere in the world. More than once, his work has ‘’risked’’ entering the shortlist of festivals of the calibre of Cannes and Berlin, and his name is now a quality mark for many of the TV products of the kids of Mother RAI. A professional who is attentive, skilled, and inspired. Able to put together quality films and series from brilliant ideas while instilling just the right balance between content and language. A private and humble person, as only the great masters know how to be, when I told him he was going to win the career award at Cartoons on the Bay 2022, his reaction was almost uncomfortable and this helped me understand that I had made the right choice. Maurizio Sestieri still has much to say and give to Italian and international animation, he might only be halfway through his artistic career, but he has already done so much to merit recognition in the first part of his career. A little like a major TV series that has won all the accolades and is preparing to announce a dazzling new season.

Esaltare la figura di un grande artista con il quale si è instaurato solo un rapporto professionale, è molto facile. Quando questo artista è anche un amico, la cosa si fa più difficile perché c’è sempre la paura di farsi prendere dal sentimento che porta all’esagerazione involontaria. Maurizio Forestieri è un grande artista e un grande amico ma non ho paura di esagerare se dico che si tratta di una delle figure più importanti della storia dell’animazione italiana degli ultimi trent’anni. Regista, storyboarder formato alla scuola di numi tutelari come Bruno Bozzetto, Guido Manuli, Pierluigi De Mas, Emanuele Luzzati, Forestieri è una di quelle figure spendibili a livello internazionale in grado di dare credibilità e autorevolezza al comparto dell’animazione italiana nel mondo. I suoi lavori hanno ‘’rischiato’’ di entrare più volte nel palmares di festival del calibro di Cannes e Berlino e il suo nome è ormai un marchio di qualità per molti dei prodotti della tv dei ragazzi di mamma Rai. Professionista attento, preparato, estroso. Capace di costruire film e serie di qualità da idee brillanti sapendo infondere equilibrio tra contenuto e linguaggio. Persona riservata e umile solo come sanno essere i grandi maestri. Quando gli ho detto che avrebbe vinto il premio alla carriera a Cartoons on the Bay 2022, la sua reazione è stata quasi di imbarazzo e questo mi ha fatto capire che stavo facendo la scelta giusta. Maurizio Forestieri ha ancora molto da dire e da regalare all’animazione italiana e internazionale; forse è solo a metà del suo percorso artistico, ma ha già fatto così tanto da meritarsi un riconoscimento alla prima parte della sua carriera. Un po’ come una grande serie tv che ha vinto tutto e che si appresta ad annunciare una nuova e sfolgorante stagione.
