As always, we are striving to make the best of “real” cattle...using “real numbers” to do it! A pot load of our 2017 steers sold on the Superior Big Horn Classic Auction held August 22-25, 2017. Out of 22,700 steers between 500-550 lbs., ours topped the market in dollars received for each steer. Feeders will pay top dollar for cattle with known carcass data of 100% prime and choice (23.7% prime) that also gain fast and grade high. This ultimately reduces the overall input cost for the feeder on each animal. We have “real” cattle that produce “real” $B, not a computer number that can be changed whenever it is convenient. A study done by Kris Ringwall, NDSU Extension, showed that from 2000-2014 weaning weights only increased by 3 lbs., in collected data. Despite intense selection for growth and terminal traits within the Angus breed, pounds weaned per cow exposed dropped 21 lbs. while production costs rose 200%. Makes one wonder. SpringLake Angus sold 100 drug free, hormone free and all natural steers @ 530# to Jim Dinklage through Superior Livestock Auction in August 2013 with a 10/31/13 delivery date. The steers were taken off the cow and shipped to O’Neill Feeders in O’Neill, NE. They were fed a normal drug free, hormone free, all natural feed ration. Of the 100 steers, 97 stayed all natural, drug and hormone free and were sent to Creekstone in Kansas at 14-15 months of age where they were slaughtered June 26, 2014. Fifteen SpringLake Angus herd sires were represented and the steers ALL went 100% Prime or Choice. SpringLake Angus thinks this is the actual numbers that we should be striving for:

His phenomenal dam is universally regarded as the dominant performance female produced in the history of the Jorgensen program and the greatest daughter of the Pathfinder Sire Ideal 1418 of 8103 4286, who is a maternal brother to the feed-efficiency matriarch Ideal 4465 of 6807 4286. A full brother, Rito Idealist, was the $40,000 all-time top-selling Jorgensen bull to N Bar Ranch as the top-performing bull of his calf crop and the record largest ribeye/CWT in Jorgensen history, whose productive career was cut short by an unfortunate injury. Out of thousands of bulls, 509 was chosen by the USDA to use as a foundation sire for their Range Efficiency Research herd. 93 has potential for replacement and range cattle from M Parl and great phenotype and performance from Limited Edition. 93 had a 4.36# ADG on test, and converted Feed:Gain at a 4.56:1 on dry matter fed basis. The Turtlerock program is best known for quality cattle who eat less and gain more. 93’s outstanding F:G ratio is an example of what we are achieving. Remember, the beef industry has F:G ratio of 6-6.5:1, so 93 rates 30% better on feed efficiency than average.

Why Consider Feed Efficiency – I Sell My Calves at Weaning? In our Turtle Rock Angus program we think Feed Efficiency is the one main area of the beef industry where major improvement is still possible and certainly from a business perspective, probably the most important from now on. Genetic improvement has increased calving ease and lowered birth weights for beef producers over the years. There has also been progress in ADG and weaning weights, however, those have leveled off now when looked at from a national or regional perspectives. On the other hand, feed efficiency remains basically unchanged for decades. We started genetic testing in 2005 with the Bovigene Company. When Bovigene was bought out by Pfizer to be the basis for 50k testing, we started feed efficiency testing wanting to know the individual HARD DATA on our bull prospects. In 2011, our SF Turtlerock RFI W124 bull showed a gain of 4.76#/day (ADG) on 14.4# of DMI/day. The combination of those numbers shows W124’s conversion Feed:Gain was a very exciting 3.02:1. With the beef feeding industry F:G standard at over twice that rate, the next question was- what will his offspring do? in 2013 a son of W124, Turtlerock A14, converted at an impressive 3.32:1 and he outgained his sire with 5.14# ADG. That same year, a friend who used W124 through AI had the top bull of all breeds in the Iowa Cattlemens Assoc. Bull test with a 5.51# ADG. Then last year, a fall-born bull, Turtlerock B55, was tested first on grass last spring and then on feed efficiency test. B55 gained 4.18# ADG on grass only. He went on to feed efficiency testing and gained 5.61# ADG. He was the top grass gain bull in our on-farm test (the group average was 2.72# ADG), the top gain at the feed-efficiency test center in that group, and had the best F:G conversion for that test at 4.42/1 F:G. There are few bulls tested for grass gain and feed efficiency, much less to have the results of B55. We have semen available on SF Turtlerock W124 and his sons A14 and B55 if you are interested in boosting feed efficiency in your program.
herd. Therefore, about 50% of all cow/calf production costs is directly represented by feed intake and efficiency. A University of Illinois multi-year study showed that 5-year-old cows still maintained the feed efficiency, whatever that was, good or bad, as they had when feed efficiency tested as yearlings. Decreasing Dry Matter Intake even 1# per day saves almost 1 1/2 tons of lifetime feed per cow for an average 8 year old cow. Choosing the right genetics can double or triple that savings. Feedlots benefit from feed efficiency for the 120 days an animal is in their feedlot. But the cow/calf producer will benefit from Feed Efficiency every day for the entire life of the cow. Feed savings of just $0.25 cents per day adds up to over $75 savings per cow per year. Mulitiply $75 or more per cow per year for a person’s herd turns into $1,000’s savings per year. This is where the true value of making feed efficiency a choice based on data and genetics comes into focus. Keeping in mind - Balance in All Things We are not suggesting anyone choose for lowest possible feed intake or conversion without keeping everything else important in place. Luckily, feed efficiency is one of the few cattle characteristics which does not result in losing something important or having something antagonistic when making choices for efficiency. So here is the question - is the herd bull a person is considering feed efficient or just a big eater? If you don’t measure for efficiency, you don’t know what you have. What we suggest and offer are sound, tested bulls who are under 6:1# conversion. This will pass on efficiency traits which are below the industry averages. This will result in more profit and more reliability in your herd in the direction of lower maintenance costs. These bulls will also have strong scrotal measurements, good feet, good legs and really good dispositions. Thanks to Gene and Kelcey for allowing us to participate in the Springlake Angus Sale again.
