Founded President Enrollment Facility Affiliation Conference

1858 Stephen D. Minnis 1735 Ralph Nolan Gymnasium NAIA Division 1 Heart of America Athletic Conference

Benedictine College is located in historic Atchison, Kansas, which is a small city on the west bank of the Missouri River, forty-five miles north of Kansas City, twenty miles north of Leavenworth, Kansas, and twenty miles south of St. Joseph, Missouri.

Benedictine College is an academic community sponsored by the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey and the sisters of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery. Heir to the 1500 years of Benedictine dedication to learning, Benedictine College in its own time is ordered to the goal of wisdom lived out in responsible awareness of oneself, God and nature, family and society. Its mission as a Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts, residential college is the education of men and women within a community of faith and scholarship. As a Catholic college, Benedictine College is committed to those beliefs and natural principles that form the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and it is committed further to those specific matters of faith of the Roman Catholic tradition, as revealed in the person of Jesus Christ and handed down in the teachings of the Church. The college embraces students and faculty from all faiths who accept its goals, seeking in its members a personal commitment to the ideals and principles of a spiritual life and the expression

of these in worship and action. Benedictine College promotes the growing involvement of religious and laity in the Church’s ministries. As a college founded on the Benedictine tradition, Benedictine College inherits the themes handed on to us by the Benedictine family: peace, the balance of activity and contemplation, and the glorification of God in all undertakings. With the ideal of a common life vitalized by the spirit of St. Benedict, the members of the Benedictine College community can share work and prayer in common, faithful participation in the life of the community, attentive openness to the Word of God, deep concern for issues of justice and peace, and the pursuit of moderation, hospitality and care for the gifts of creation. As a liberal arts college, Benedictine College is dedicated to provide a liberal arts education by means of academic programs based on a core of studies in the arts and sciences. Through these programs, the college guides students to refine their capacity for the pursuit and acquisition of truth, to appreciate the

major achievements in thought and culture, and to understand the principles that sound theoretical and practical judgment require. In addition, the college provides education for careers through both professional courses of study and major programs in the liberal arts and sciences. As an essential element in its educational mission, Benedictine College fosters scholarship, independent research and performance in its students and faculty as a means of participating in and contributing to the broader world of learning. As a residential college, Benedictine College supports and encourages the full development of its students through a community life that expresses and proclaims the worth and dignity of each individual. In a caring and supportive atmosphere, students are helped to develop a sense of meaningful purpose in life and encouraged to participate in programs that promote sound bodies, emotional balance and dedication to the welfare of others.

A St. Joseph, Missouri, native, President Stephen D. Minnis graduated from Benedictine College in 1982. He obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from Washburn University in 1985 and Master’s of Business Administration degree in 1993. He went on to work successfully as a corporate lawyer. His wife Amy (Kohake) Minnis graduated from Benedictine in 1984 and currently teaches in the Education Department at Benedictine College. The couple has three children, Matthew, Michael, and Molly. Minnis began his presidential duties Oct. 1, 2004.

Since 1979, defensive coordinator Charlie Gartenmayer has served alongside Coach Larry Wilcox. Six years ago, after retiring from many years of service to the Atchison public school system, Coach Gartenmayer was asked to take over as the school’s Athletic Director. His duties as Athletic Director in addition to his coaching responsibilities allowed him to become a full-time member of the Athletic Department staff. Before taking over as the AD, he was the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services after his retirement from USD 409 in the spring of 2007. A former Raven himself, Coach Gartenmayer was a key member of the Ravens 1974 squad that finished the season as the top-ranked defense in the NAIA. The 1974 Ravens defense surrendered just 164.7 yards per game that season. Along with his many years of dedication to the Raven football program, Coach Gartenmayer was also recognized in 2000 as the top assistant coach in the NAIA, earning the distinguished AFCA-NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year award.

13-14 RAVENS IN THE COMMUNITY

LITTLE RAVEN CLINIC The Little Raven Basketball Clinic is a chance for young girls and boys to receive direct coaching from the Raven basketball staff and players. Instructions focus on the fundamentals of the game, as well as playing contests. All participants earn the unique opportunity to play during the half time of a Raven home game, in addition to a pizza party with the Raven players.

HALLOWEEN HOOPS Halloween Hoops is a unique and free event offers local children and their family a safe and entertaining trick-or-treat opportunity. The night begins with an introduction of both the Ravens and Lady Ravens players and staff, followed by a 3-point challenge between the Ravens and Lady Ravens, a slam-dunk contest for the men, and then a costume contest for all children in attendance. The night concludes with children trick-ortreating from the teams, receiving candy and autographs in exchange for a good joke!

ON CAMPUS Benedictine College was founded in 1858 as St. Benedict’s College in Atchison. In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, seven Benedictine sisters arrived and founded an academy for young women. They went on to establish Mount St. Scholastica College. In 1971, Benedictine College was created when the Mount and St. Benedict’s merged to form what now has become one of the finest Catholic colleges in America.

13-14 ON CAMPUS Today, Benedictine College is experiencing a renaissance. Enrollment is soaring, with new academic programs and facilities attracting large incoming freshman classes and record-setting attendance. At the core of this success are a thriving faith life, strong sense of community, and rigorous academic programs. Combining both new programs and facilities, the Mother Teresa Center for Nursing and Health Education signals the start of the new nursing program at Benedictine College. At the same time, remodeling in Westerman Hall to add a state-of-the-art engineering lab and a unique collaboration with the University of North Dakota, allows Benedictine students to earn degrees in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Benedictine College is still one of the few places students can major in Youth Ministry, and the College Ministry program, recognized as one of the most vibrant in the country, continues to expand. In athletics, lights on the soccer field and Field Turf™ on both the football and soccer fields have improved those venues for varsity sports while allowing them to be used for intramurals, summer athletic camps, and club sports. U.S. News & World Report has named Benedictine College as one of America’s best colleges and the school is a bright star in the world of Catholic higher education, having been named one of the top Catholic Colleges in America by First Things magazine and the Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. The School of Business continues to receive international attention with its graduate programs and the Journal of International Business. The Cray Center for Entrepreneurship was recently highlighted nationally for its creative approach to spreading entrepreneurship in the Heartland of America. Benedictine College’s campus in Florence, Italy, continues to grow in popularity, giving students the chance to spend an entire semester studying abroad. In addition to all of that, the Discovery Program continues to provide excellent research opportunities for students who wish to pursue projects outside the standard classroom curriculum.

Benedictine College is located in historic Atchison, Kansas, which is a small city on the west bank of the Missouri River, forty-five miles north of Kansas City, twenty miles north of Leavenworth, Kansas, and twenty miles south of St. Joseph, Missouri.

The heritage of Benedictine College is rooted in the fifteenhundred-year tradition of the Benedictine Order and the more recent dedication of the American Catholic church to providing sound general and religious education to its members. In 1856, at the request of the Most Rev. John B. Miege, S.J., Vicar Apostolic of Leavenworth, two Benedictine monks arrived in Atchison with the intention of founding a Benedictine school of higher learning for the people of Kansas.

SEASON

PREVIEW 2013-2014 “We will go out there and do what we do every day to try to get better. If we can do that throughout the course of the season we will see the results.” - Head Coach Ryan Moody

The mantra for the 2013-14 Benedictine College men’s basketball team is “Change the status quo.” With that, expectations from the players and the Raven coaching staff were at an increased level as they began preparation for the upcoming season. This season is the third under head coach Ryan Moody after the program had gone through several transitions in years past. “It helps that we all know what the expectations are,” Steve O’Brien said. “We’re all on the same page working for a common goal. Everyone came in focused on changing expectations.” For Coach Moody, changing expectations has also meant changing up the Raven schedule. This season’s schedule features five NAIA Div. I National Tournament Qualifiers – all five of which finished last season ranked in the Top 15. Two of those five teams are on the nonconference schedule. Benedictine travels to Shawnee, Okla., to take on NAIA Div. I tournament qualifier Oklahoma Baptist on Nov. 23 and then hosts NAIA Div. I tournament qualifier Columbia (Mo.) College on Dec. 18. “We are excited about our 2013-14 schedule,” Coach Moody said. “Our philosophy is to play the most competitive

16

non-conference schedule possible to prepare ourselves for the tough Heart of America Athletic Conference regular season. We have a great mix of challenging home, road and neutral court opponents before the semester break in preparation for the stretch run in HAAC play. “We are excited to have thirteen home games this year for our students, faculty, staff and our loyal fans from Atchison to watch our team compete.” The other three national tournament qualifiers all come from the HAAC. The Ravens play at MNU on Jan. 11 with the return game in Atchison on Feb. 15. The Ravens host Culver-Stockton on Jan. 23 with the trip to Canton, Mo., on Feb. 27. The Ravens travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Evangel on Jan. 25 with the return game in Atchison lined up as the regular-season finale on March 1. The Ravens return all but one player from last season with 70 percent of their scoring

from last year coming from players who are now sophomores and juniors. “We return essentially our entire team,” Coach Moody said. “That leaves a lot of room for optimism and we’re excited to be back at it. We’ll be led by three seniors and we’re going to lean on those guys pretty heavily.” Senior forward Charlie Wallrapp was a second-team All-HAAC selection a year ago and senior forward Steven O’Brien was one of the top reserves last year. Guard Herb Khangura is the third senior on the squad and is expected to push for minutes at the point this season after sitting out last year. “Having that much scoring coming back is a positive thing,” Coach Moody said. “But we’ve talked with our guys a lot, and I they believe it, one year older doesn’t mean you’re one year better. We’re going to have to continue to work hard because this (conference) has too many good coaches and there are too many good players in this league.

Senior Quaran Johnson was named a HAAC second teamer and Wallrapp was on the HAAC third team. Charlie Wallrapp (Jr. Omaha) earned All-Heart of America Athletic Conference Second Team and Jonathan Anaekwe (Soph. Shawnee) earned Honorable Mention. Quaran Johnson earned the same honor his senior year in 2011-12. Wallrapp was also named to the Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete team. This is an award given to the top 60 student-athletes in the country as recognized for their efforts both on the court and in the classroom. In his time at Benedictine College Coach Moody’s teams have been one of the toughest defensive teams in the nation. The Ravens finished the 2011-12 campaign ranked number three in the country in Scoring Defense per Game (61.767) and finished 2012-13 ranked seven in the country in the same category. The three true freshman and two redshirt freshmen accounted for 62.5 percent of the team’s overall scoring. True freshmen Troy Huff also broke the freshmen scoring record at UND. Prior to UND, Moody served as Head Coach at Raymore-Peculiar High School in Peculiar, Mo., from 2001-2006. Moody inherited a program that had gone 44-81 the previous five seasons, and led Ray-Pec to a 72-55 record over the next five years, including a 53-24 mark over the last three years and the first Suburban Conference title in school history. Moody served as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha from 19972001. While at UNO, Moody helped recruit three recruiting classes that led the Mavericks to backto-back NCC championships. Moody played for the Ravens 1992 -1996 and graduated as the eighth-leading scorer in school history. He also graduated second on the school’s all-time three-pointers made list and was a three-time all-conference selection, including a pair of first team honors. Moody went on to
