Benedictine College is located in historic Atchison, Kansas, which is a small city on the west bank of the Missouri River, forty-five miles north of Kansas City, twenty miles north of Leavenworth, Kansas, and twenty miles south of St. Joseph, Missouri. Benedictine College is an academic community sponsored by the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey and the sisters of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery. Heir to the 1500 years of Benedictine dedication to learning, Benedictine College in its own time is ordered to the goal of wisdom lived out in responsible awareness of oneself, God and nature, family and society. Its mission as a Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts, residential college is the education of men and women within a community of faith and scholarship. As a Catholic college, Benedictine College is committed to those beliefs and natural principles that form the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and it is committed further to those specific matters of faith of the Roman Catholic tradition, as revealed in the person of Jesus Christ and handed down in the teachings of the Church. The college embraces students and faculty from all faiths who accept its goals, seeking in its members a personal commitment to the ideals and principles of a spiritual life and the
expression of these in worship and action. Benedictine College promotes the growing involvement of religious and laity in the Church’s ministries. As a college founded on the Benedictine tradition, Benedictine College inherits the themes handed on to us by the Benedictine family: peace, the balance of activity and contemplation, and the glorification of God in all undertakings. With the ideal of a common life vitalized by the spirit of St. Benedict, the members of the Benedictine College community can share work and prayer in common, faithful participation in the life of the community, attentive openness to the Word of God, deep concern for issues of justice and peace, and the pursuit of moderation, hospitality and care for the gifts of creation. As a liberal arts college, Benedictine College is dedicated to provide a liberal arts education by means of academic programs based on a core of studies in the arts and sciences. Through these programs, the college guides students to refine their
capacity for the pursuit and acquisition of truth, to appreciate the major achievements in thought and culture, and to understand the principles that sound theoretical and practical judgment require. In addition, the college provides education for careers through both professional courses of study and major programs in the liberal arts and sciences. As an essential element in its educational mission, Benedictine College fosters scholarship, independent research and performance in its students and faculty as a means of participating in and contributing to the broader world of learning. As a residential college, Benedictine College supports and encourages the full development of its students through a community life that expresses and proclaims the worth and dignity of each individual. In a caring and supportive atmosphere, students are helped to develop a sense of meaningful purpose in life and encouraged to participate in programs that promote sound bodies, emotional balance and dedication to the welfare of others.
A St. Joseph, Missouri, native, President Stephen D. Minnis graduated from Benedictine College in 1982. He obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from Washburn University in 1985 and Master’s of Business Administration degree in 1993. He went on to work successfully as a corporate lawyer. His wife Amy (Kohake) Minnis graduated from Benedictine in 1984 and currently teaches in the Education Department at Benedictine College. The couple has three children, Matthew, Michael, and Molly. Minnis began his presidential duties Oct. 1, 2004.

All participants earn the unique opportunity to play during half-time of a Raven home game, in addition to a pizza party with the Lady Raven players.
HALLOWEEN HOOPS New to the Lady Raven event lineup is Halloween Hoops. This unique and free event offers local children and their family a safe and entertaining trick-or-treat opportunity. The night begins with an introduction of both the Raven and Lady Raven players and staff, followed by a 3-point challenge between the Ravens and Lady Ravens, a slam-dunk contest for the men, and then a costume contest for all children in attendance. ON CAMPUS Benedictine College was founded in 1858 as St. Benedict’s College in Atchison. In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, seven Benedictine sisters arrived and founded an academy for young women. They went on to establish Mount St. Scholastica College. In 1971, Benedictine College was created when the Mount and St. Benedict’s merged to form what now has become one of the finest Catholic colleges in America.
13-14 ON CAMPUS Today, Benedictine College is experiencing a renaissance. Enrollment is soaring with new academic programs and facilities attracting large incoming freshman classes and record-setting attendance. At the core of this success are a thriving faith life, strong sense of community, and rigorous academic programs. Combining both new programs and facilities, the Mother Teresa Center for Nursing and Health Education signals the start of the new nursing program at Benedictine College. At the same time, remodeling in Westerman Hall to add a stateof-the-art engineering lab and a unique collaboration with the University of North Dakota, allows Benedictine students to earn degrees in Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Benedictine College is still one of the few places students can major in Youth Ministry, and the College Ministry program, recognized as one of the most vibrant in the country, continues to expand. In athletics, lights on the soccer field and Field Turf™ on both the football and soccer fields have improved those venues for varsity sports while allowing them to be used for intramurals, summer athletic camps, and club sports. U.S. News & World Report has named Benedictine College as one of America’s best colleges and the school is a bright star in the world of Catholic higher education, having been named one of the top Catholic Colleges in America by First Things magazine and the Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. The School of Business continues to receive international attention with its graduate programs and the Journal of International Business. The Cray Center for Entrepreneurship was recently highlighted nationally for its creative approach to spreading entrepreneurship in the Heartland of America. Benedictine College’s campus in Florence, Italy, continues to grow in popularity, giving students the chance to spend an entire semester studying abroad. In addition to above, the Discovery Program continues to provide excellent research opportunities for students who wish to pursue projects outside the standard classroom curriculum.

Benedictine College is located in historic Atchison, Kansas, which is a small city on the west bank of the Missouri River, forty-five miles north of Kansas City, twenty miles north of Leavenworth, Kansas, and twenty miles south of St. Joseph, Missouri. The heritage of Benedictine College is rooted in the fifteen-hundred-year tradition of the Benedictine Order and the more recent dedication of the American Catholic church to providing sound general and religious education to its members. In 1856, at the request of the Most Rev. John B. Miege, S.J., Vicar Apostolic of Leavenworth, two Benedictine monks arrived in Atchison with the intention of founding a Benedictine school of higher learning for the people of Kansas.

PREVIEW 2013-2014
T
he 2013-2014 Benedictine College women’s basketball team is looking forward to challenging for another Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) title after finishing second last season with a 16-2 conference record, a 28-6 overall record, and a #11 national ranking in the NAIA Division I polls. After earning a trip to the NAIA Division I national tournament in Frankfort, KY, last season, the team is even more motivated and determined to earn a return trip in 2013-2014. The Lady Ravens under the direction of Head Coach Chad Folsom, entering his 13th season at the helm, return three starters, and Honorable Mention All-American, two All-Conference performers, six seniors, as well as eigth players with significant experience from last season. To add depth and talent to this year’s squad, Coach Folsom has added two transfers and two freshmen. In the guard position, the Lady Ravens return a great deal of experience and talent. Though the 2013-2014 team will miss the All-time leader in assists, Kelsey Anselmi, the team returns the third best player in the HAAC for assists a season ago - senior point guard Rosie Youngstrom. Rosie’s experience will be needed to run the show this season. She will be backed up by red-shirt freshman Ali Taff and true freshman Rashayla
“We are deep, have good team chemistry, great leadership, and good shooters, The pieces are there to once again compete for a conference title.” Mathis. In the wing position, the Lady Ravens will be counting on seniors Justice Payne and Katie Barr and junior Jackie Ziesel, all returning from a strong 2012-2013 campaign. Justice Payne, a long range bomber, led the HAAC in made 3-pters (91) last season and set the BC record. Katie is a tireless worker and was one of the team leaders last season in offensive rebounds. Jackie Ziesel is an athletic wing who averaged seven points and four rebounds last year. Senior Tori Aubuchon, juniors Rachel Thrash and Claire Pedulla, and red-shirt freshman Dallas Frederikson will also provide depth and outside shooting ability to the guard core. In the post and power forward positions, Benedictine College returns senior starter Erin Murphy. Erin was the third leading scorer last season averaging nine ppg and was the team’s leading rebounder with 5.6 rebounds per game. She is joined in the post by sophomore
Chayla Rutledge and Senior April Miller who both played significant minutes last season and will be counted on to score more for the Lady Ravens. Transfers Jordan Kramer, Kaitlyn Mercer, junior Cierra Akers, sophomore Whitney Morrow, and freshman Marissa Rich will provide additional size and scoring to the front line. The Lady Ravens’ experience, depth, and talent, has Coach Chad Folsom very excited about this year’s team. The preseason schedule is tough again this season with games versus NAIA Division I nationally ranked #2 Oklahoma City University and NAIA Division II nationally ranked #7 Northwestern Iowa University, #23 College of St. Mary, and RV Friends University, along with NCAA Division II power Washburn University. The strong schedule should help prepare the Lady Ravens for the tough and competitive HAAC.
