2014-15 BENEDICTINE COLLEGE A Note from the President The best way to introduce you to Benedictine College is to tell you not just about the college’s past, but also about our future. When the Benedictine College community drafted the plan Benedictine 2020: A Vision for Greatness, our goal was to make the most of the success we have had recently and make Benedictine College a market leader in every aspect of its mission: Community, faith and scholarship. We are very grateful for the progress we have made. Community • Benedictine’s residential life is built to bring Ravens together, from the decades old traditions that thrive on campus — such as freshman beanies and homecoming bed races — to the new Dining Hall, designed to build community. • The college’s enrollment has grown for 17 years in a row, to a record high of 1,800 students, and opened 11 new residence halls since 2000. • Our athletic programs have reached a high level of success, with some of the best facilities and often the best records in our conference. Faith • The campus is designed to show the place of faith. At its heart is Mary’s Grotto, and when you walk through campus you meet great figures of faith in its statuary: St. Benedict, St. Scholastica, Adam, St. Peter, St. Paul, and Our Lady of Grace. • More than a third of our students “travel for their faith,” including recent mission trips to El Salvador, Belize, Haiti, Jamaica, Rwanda, and domestically. • The Church looks to Benedictine College to lead. We are one of the few colleges chosen by the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Catholic identity, the Vatican’s Church in America conference, and as leaders of the March for Life. Scholarship • Benedictine College is widely regarded as one of America’s best, the only school in the country rated a top-20 best college by U.S. News & World Report, First Things magazine and the Newman Guide and in the 100 Best Colleges in the 50 states chosen by TheBestSchools.org. • The 2014 freshman class entering has the highest average ACT scores in Kansas and the highest in the school’s history. The national SSI survey shows our students rate Benedictine College higher than the national average in every academic category. • Since 2000, alumni achievements include 13 bank presidents, including Tom Hoenig ’68, former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and a current director of the FDIC; 8 university presidents; 7 bishops; 2 Kansas Secretaries of Commerce; and one Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, the late Wangari Maathai ’64. Ultimately, the story of Benedictine College is the story of its students. We are grateful for the wonderful people who have associated themselves with Benedictine College, and we are proud of what those who have left us have become. It Is a Great Time to Be a Raven,
Stephen D. Minnis President, Benedictine College A St. Joseph, Missouri, native, President Stephen D. Minnis graduated from Benedictine College in 1982. Since 1979, defensive coordinator Charlie Gartenmayer has served alongside Coach Larry Wilcox. Six years ago, after retiring from many years of service to the Atchison public school system, Coach Gartenmayer was asked to take over as the school’s Athletic Director. His duties as Athletic Director in addition to his coaching responsibilities allowed him to become a full-time member of the Athletic Department staff. Before taking over as the AD, he was the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services after his retirement from USD 409 in the spring of 2007. A former Raven himself, Coach Gartenmayer was a key member of the Ravens 1974 squad that finished the season as the top-ranked defense in the NAIA. The 1974 Ravens defense surrendered just 164.7 yards per game that season. Along with his many years of dedication to the Raven football program, Coach Gartenmayer was also recognized in 2000 as the top assistant coach in the NAIA, earning the distinguished AFCA-NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year award.

LITTLE RAVEN CLINIC The Little Raven Basketball Clinic is a chance for young girls and boys to receive direct coaching from the Lady Raven basketball staff and players. Instructions focus on the fundamentals of the game, as well as playing contests. All participants earn the unique opportunity to play during half-time of a Raven home game, in addition to a pizza party with the Lady Raven players.
HALLOWEEN HOOPS New to the Lady Raven event lineup is Halloween Hoops. This unique and free event offers local children and their family a safe and entertaining trick-or-treat opportunity. The night begins with an introduction of both the Raven and Lady Raven players and staff, followed by a 3-point challenge between the Ravens and Lady Ravens, a slam-dunk contest for the men, and then a costume contest for all children in attendance. The night concludes with children trick-or-treating from the teams, receiving candy and autographs in exchange for a good joke!

ON CAMPUS Benedictine College was founded in 1858 as St. Benedict’s College in Atchison. In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, seven Benedictine sisters arrived and founded the future Mount St. Scholastica College. The two merged to become Benedictine College in 1971. Benedictine College is building one of the great Catholic colleges in America through its mission of community, faith and scholarship.

The reputation is paying off. Benedictine College’s enrollment has increased for 17 consecutive years. The college just built its 11th new residence hall since the year 2000. The 2014 freshman class entering has the highest average ACT scores in Kansas and the highest in the school’s history. The national SSI survey shows our students rate Benedictine College higher than the national average in every academic category. Benedictine College is preparing students to enter rewarding graduate studies and careers that help strengthen our communities, our church, and our world. Benedictine College has a long and proud track record of launching successful medical careers. Ravens are physicians at Mayo Clinic, running rural health clinics, and teaching at KU Med. Benedictine College engineers are at work at a number of leading firms. Since 2000, alumni achievements include 13 bank presidents, one of them being Tom Hoenig ’68, former President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and a current director of the FDIC; 8 university presidents; 7 bishops and 100 vocations to the priesthood and religious life; 2 Kansas Secretaries of Commerce; and one Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, the late Wangari Maathai ’64. Raven alums are nurses, business leaders, teachers, coaches, moms and dads. Benedictine College, one of the few colleges of its size in the country with a turfed football and soccer field, has a tradition of excellence in athletics from its 91% participation in intramurals to its varsity teams’ success on the field and in the classroom. Benedictine College’s campus in Florence, Italy, continues to grow in popularity, giving students the chance to spend an entire semester studying abroad.

Benedictine College is located in historic Atchison, Kansas, which is a small city on the west bank of the Missouri River, forty-five miles north of Kansas City, twenty miles north of Leavenworth, Kansas, and twenty miles south of St. Joseph, Missouri.
The heritage of Benedictine College is rooted in the fifteenhundred-year tradition of the Benedictine Order and the more recent dedication of the American Catholic church to providing sound general and religious education to its members. In 1856, at the request of the Most Rev. John B. Miege, S.J., Vicar Apostolic of Leavenworth, two Benedictine monks arrived in Atchison with the intention of founding a Benedictine school of higher learning for the people of Kansas.

SEASON
PREVIEW 2014-2015 “We base a lot of our thought process on unselfish play, help on defense and really share the ball on offense.” - Head Coach Ryan Moody
The Raven men’s basketball team received the full 81 points on at the annual Heart of America Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll as the Ravens were selected as the favorite to earn the conference championship again this season. Benedictine, who went 14-4 as season ago in Heart play, earned the full points (coaches did not vote for their own teams) to finish 16 points ahead of second place selection MNU. “Our depth is really going to be something that we’re going to try and feature this year by getting after you on defense,” said Raven head coach Ryan Moody. “Then we’re going to try and score in transition on offense. We’re not going to change a lot of what we do. “We base a lot of our thought process on unselfish play, help on defense and really share the ball on offense. If we can get to that again and find that identity, I think that we’re going to have a really good year.” The Ravens were not an unanimous selection to repeat however, as MNU – who played into the 2014 Fab Four a season ago – picked up one first place vote earning 65 points. Evangel University was selected third with 58 points while Culver-Stockton College was two points behind with 56 points. All of the preseason top four – Benedictine, MNU, Evangel and Culver-Stockton – all earned a spot in the 2014 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Div. I Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament. Benedictine went 23-9 overall a season ago and returns three of their five
starters this year. Brett Fisher, Jonathan Anaekwe and John Harris Jr. will anchor the Ravens back court while the team will look to the leadership of a six-member senior class heading into 2014-15. Seniors Luke Norville, Dean Tiwald, Jallen Messersmith and Rafail Tsourakis will give the Ravens experience as they look to make another trip to Kansas City in March. Messersmith was the 2014 Heart Defensive Player of the Year while finishing the last season among the NAIA leaders in total blocks and blocks per game. Harris Jr. is the Ravens top returning scorer from last season as he averaged 11.4 points per game while Fisher was among the NAIA leaders in 3-point field goal percentage at 47.4 percent. Connor Fleming, Sean Fleming Jr., and Austin Eckert return to help add depth to the Ravens after the trio saw key minutes off the bench last season. “We have so many guys who have to raise their leadership roll,” Coach Moody said. “We have so many upperclassmen that there are going
to be times where they’re going to have to choose to be led and not be a leader. We have a lot of guys that are going to share that burden of leadership that if we can find that chemistry where sometimes I need to be led and sometimes I’m the leader, I think we have a chance for good things to happen.” Head Coach Ryan Moody added five newcomers to this years squad with several additional players who were in the program a year ago as redshirts looking to compete for minutes this season.
The Raven Men’s Basketball team got some more good news when the NAIA released the Div. I Preseason Top 25 Coaches’ Poll. Benedictine will start this season at No. 4 in NAIA Div. I after finishing last season at No. 14. The Ravens and No. 5 Talladega (Ala.) saw the most improved positions in the preseason poll from their postseason finish from last season.

MOODY HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH CHARACTER.ABILITY.PERSONAL INTEGRITY.MENTOR.DEMANDING.LOYALTY.DEVOTION The 2013-14 Raven men’s basketball season was a historic year for Benedictine College. Third-year head coach Ryan Moody – Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year- guided his team to a season that will long be remembered. Moody’s third team went 23-9, 14-4 in league play and won the first HAAC conference championship in school history. The conference title earned an automatic berth in the NAIA Division I National Tournament for the first time in 44 years. The season ended in the second round of the national tournament after the Ravens earned a 70-65 win over No. 21-ranked Westminster College giving the program its first win at the tournament since bringing home the 1967 NAIA National Championship. The 23 overall wins marked the fourth most in program history and the most wins by the Raven program since the 1968 season. The Ravens

2014-15 COACHES’ PROFILES were ranked at No. 14 in the final NAIA Div. I Men’s Basketball Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and Moody was one of twelve finalists for the 2014 Don Meyer Award. The success also led to individual recognition as several players were honored for their efforts. Charlie Wallrapp (Sr. Omaha NE) earned All-Heart of America Athletic Conference First Team, John Harris Jr. (So. Lincoln NE) earned All-Heart of America Athletic Conference Second Team, Jallen Messersmith (Jr. Blue Springs MO) was named Defensive Player of the Year in the HAAC. Messersmith and Jonathon Anaekwe were both named All-HAAC Honorable Mention. Charlie Wallrapp was named to the NAIA Division I All-America Honorable Mention team for the second time in as many years. He is the second player to receive the honor under Moody (Quaran Johnson 2011-12). The honors and recognition continued off the floor for the Ravens as Luke Norville (Jr. Council Bluffs IA) was named one of 75 players to the 2013-14 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete Award list. Norville was also given the NAIA DI National Tournament Champions of Character Award. Jonathon Anaekwe, Dean Tiwald, Luke Norville and Charlie Wallrapp were all named to the 201314 NABC Honors Court. In his second season Coach Moody led the Raven men’s basketball team to an 18-12 overall record and finished fifth place at 10-8 in a tough Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC). Charlie Wallrapp (Jr. Omaha) earned All-Heart of America Athletic Conference Second Team and Jonathon Anaekwe (Soph. Shawnee) earned Honorable Mention. Wallrapp also became the seventh Raven to earn NAIA Division I AllAmerica Honors when named to the Honorable Mention team. Wallrapp was also named to the Daktronics NAIA Scholar Athlete team. In 2011-12, Moody’s first as a collegiate head
coach, Benedictine College went 16-16 overall and 10-8 in HAAC play. The team finished sixth in the league standings. Senior Quaran Johnson was named a HAAC second teamer and Wallrapp was on the HAAC third team. In his time at Benedictine College Coach Moody’s teams have been one of the toughest defensive teams in the nation. The Ravens finished the last three seasons ranked in the top fifteen in the nation in Field Goal Percentage Defense 10th, 11th and 9th respectively. The Ravens have also been ranked in the top ten in the county the last three years in Scoring Defense 3rd, 7th and 10th in 2013-14. The 2013-14 squad also was ranked 9th in the country in blocks per game lead by the number two shot blocker in the country Jallen Messersmith (75) and were ranked 4th in the country in 3pt Field Goal Percentage (.401) led by Brett Fisher who finished the season ranked 3rd in the country in 3pt Field Goal Percentage (.474). Ryan Moody was named the 17th head coach in Benedictine College men’s basketball history on April 5, 2011. A native of Omaha NE, Moody played for the Ravens from 1992-96 and graduated from Benedictine College in 1997. Moody had spent the previous five seasons at the University of North Dakota, the first four as Head Assistant Coach and the 2010-11 year as Associate Head Coach. In his role as Associate Head Coach and Head Assistant Coach at the University of North Dakota, Moody, was instrumental in guiding the Fighting Sioux through the transition from NCAA DII to NCAA DI. This past season Moody helped UND to an 11 game turnaround from 2009-10 which was the third best in program history. UND finished the 2010-11 season 19-15 and won the first ever conference title in the Division I era with a Great West Conference Tournament Championship. The team also earned the first
ever DI post season tournament game in the CollegeInsiders.com Postseason Tournament at the United States Air Force Academy. Moody is always highly visible on the recruiting trail. In his role as recruiting coordinator at UND, Moody strung together recruiting classes that included the highest scoring freshmen class in NCAA Division I basketball last year. The three true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen accounted for 62.5 percent of the team’s overall scoring. True freshmen Troy Huff also broke the freshmen scoring record at UND. Prior to UND, Moody served as Head Coach at Raymore-Peculiar High School in Peculiar, Mo., from 2001-2006. Moody inherited a program that had gone 44-81 the previous five seasons, and led Ray-Pec to a 72-55 record over the next five years, including a 53-24 mark over the last three years and the first Suburban Conference title in school history. Moody served as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha from 19972001. While at UNO, Moody helped recruit three recruiting classes that led the Mavericks to backto-back NCC championships. Moody played for the Ravens 1992 -1996 and graduated as the eighth-leading scorer in school history. He also graduated second on the school’s all-time three-pointers made list and was a three-time all-conference selection, including a pair of first team honors. Moody went on to serve one year as a student assistant coach at Benedictine College. Moody received his bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in secondary education from Benedictine College in 1997 and earned a master’s degree in recreation administration from UNO in 2000 and a master’s degree in administration from William Woods (Mo.) University in 2005. Moody resides in Atchison with his wife Lisa.
