Since 1979, defensive coordinator Charlie Gartenmayer has served alongside Coach Wilcox. Six years ago, after retiring from many years of service to the Atchison public school system, Coach Gartenmayer was asked to take over as the school’s Athletic Director. His duties as Athletic Director in addition to his coaching responsibilities allowed him to become a full-time member of the Athletic Department staff. Before taking over as the AD, he was the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services after his retirement from USD 409 in the spring of 2007. A former Raven himself, Coach Gartenmayer was a key member of the Ravens 1974 squad that finished the season as the top-ranked defense in the NAIA. The 1974 Ravens defense surrendered just 164.7 yards per game that season. Along with his many years of dedication to the Raven football program, Coach Gartenmayer was also recognized in 2000 as the top assistant coach in the NAIA, earning the distinguished AFCA-NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year award.

LITTLE RAVEN CLINIC The Little Raven Basketball Clinic is a chance for young girls and boys to receive direct coaching from the Lady Raven basketball staff and players. Instructions focus on the fundamentals of the game, as well as playing contests. All participants earn the unique opportunity to play during the half time of a Raven home game, in addition to a pizza party with the Lady Raven players.
HALLOWEEN HOOPS New to the Lady Raven event lineup is Halloween Hoops. This unique and free event offers local children and their family a safe and entertaining trick-or-treat opportunity. The night begins with an introduction of both the Raven and Lady Raven players and staff, followed by a 3-point challenge between the Ravens and Lady Ravens, a slamdunk contest for the men, and then a costume contest for all children in attendance. The night concludes with children trick-or-treating from the teams, receiving candy and autographs in exchange for a good joke!

ON CAMPUS Benedictine College was founded in 1858 as St. Benedict’s College in Atchison. In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, seven Benedictine sisters arrived and founded an academy for young women. They went on to establish Mount St. Scholastica College. In 1971, Benedictine College was created when the Mount and St. Benedict’s merged to form what now has become one of the finest Catholic colleges in America.
12-13 ON CAMPUS Today, Benedictine College is experiencing a renaissance. Enrollment is soaring, with new academic programs and facilities attracting large incoming freshman classes and record-setting attendance. At the core of this success are a thriving faith life, strong sense of community, and rigorous academic programs. Combining both new programs and facilities, the Mother Teresa Center for Nursing and Health Education signals the start of the new nursing program at Benedictine College. At the same time, remodeling in Westerman Hall to add a state-of-the-art engineering lab and a unique collaboration with the University of North Dakota, allows Benedictine students to earn degrees in Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Benedictine College is still one of the few places students can major in Youth Ministry and the College Ministry program, recognized as one of the most vibrant in the country, continues to expand. In athletics, lights on the soccer field and Field Turf™ on both the football and soccer fields have improved those venues for varsity sports while allowing them to be used for intramurals, summer athletic camps, and club sports. U.S. News & World Report has named Benedictine College as one of America’s best colleges and the school is a bright star in the world of Catholic higher education, having been named one of the top Catholic Colleges in America by First Things magazine and the Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. The School of Business continues to receive international attention with its graduate programs and the Journal of International Business. The Cray Center for Entrepreneurship was recently highlighted nationally for its creative approach to spreading entrepreneurship in the Heartland of America. Benedictine College’s campus in Florence, Italy, continues to grow in popularity, giving students the chance to spend an entire semester studying abroad. In addition to all of that, the Discovery Program continues to provide excellent research opportunities for students who wish to pursue projects outside the standard classroom curriculum.

Benedictine College is located in historic Atchison, Kansas, which is a small city on the west bank of the Missouri River, forty-five miles north of Kansas City, twenty miles north of Leavenworth, Kansas, and twenty miles south of St. Joseph, Missouri.
The heritage of Benedictine College is rooted in the fifteen hundred year tradition of the Benedictine Order and the more recent dedication of the American Catholic church to providing sound general and religious education to its members. In 1856, at the request of the Most Rev. John B. Miege, S.J., Vicar Apostolic of Leavenworth, two Benedictine monks arrived in Atchison with the intention of founding a Benedictine school of higher learning for the people of Kansas.

SEASON
PREVIEW 2012-2013 “We are deep, have good team chemistry, great leadership, and good shooters, The pieces are there to once again compete for a conference title.”
T
he 2012-2013 Benedictine College women’s basketball team has their sights set on trying to get back to the top of the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC), where it won the conference title in 2006 and 2008. Coach Chad Folsom, entering his 12th season at the helm likes the dynamics, work ethic, and leadership of this year’s team. The Lady Ravens return 3 starters, and two All-Conference performers, as well as 5 of their top 7 scorers from a year ago. To add depth and experience to this year’s team, Coach Folsom recruited two junior college transfers and three freshmen. Two returning point guards, who were leaders in the HAAC last year in assist to turnover ratio and total assists, will be back to lead the Lady Raven offense this year. Senior Kelsey Anselmi started every game at the point guard position last year and was 2nd in the conference in both assists (4.5 per game) and assist to turnover ratio (1.42), while earning Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. Junior Rosie Youngstrom split time last season at the point guard and shooting guard positions and was 1st in the HAAC in assist to turnover ratio (1.43) and second for the Lady Ravens in assists (3.0 per game). The offense is in good hands with these two running the show. Sophomore

wings Jackie Ziesel and junior Katie Barr, both split time starting last season, also return to provide experience to the Lady Raven guard core. Sophomore Rachel Thrash, junior college transfer Justice Payne, junior Tori Aubuchon, sophomore Claire Pedulla, and freshmen Alexa Taff and Dallas Frederikson will provide added depth and outside shooting ability. In the post and power forward positions, Benedictine College returns starter senior Erin Murphy, who was 3rd on the team in field goal percentage (49.7%) and rebounding (3.9 per game). She is joined by Honorable Mention All-Conference senior Liz Stinson. Liz was the team’s third leading scorer (7.3 ppg) and was 2nd on the team in field goal percentage (50.6%) a year ago. These two will provide great leadership and scoring punch in the post for the Lady Ravens. Murphy and Stinson will be joined by two redshirt freshman who are recovered from
ACL surgery last year, Jayde Reid and Chayla Rutledge, a junior college transfer April Miller, sophomore Cierra Akers and freshman Whitney Morrow. The Lady Ravens should be strong, physical, and deep along the front line this season. Coach Chad Folsom is very excited about this year’s team. “We are deep, have good team chemistry, great leadership, and good shooters,” stated Folsom. “The pieces are there to once again compete for a conference title.” The preseason schedule is tough again this year with games versus NAIA Division I nationally ranked #2 Shawnee State University and NAIA Division II nationally ranked #8 Briar Cliff University, #20 Friends University, and #23 College of St. Mary, along with NCAA Division II power Washburn University. This strong schedule should help prepare the Lady Ravens for the tough and competitive HAAC.
