As daily lives are transformed under the impact of the pandemic, the volume of social media has risen since 2021. Under such a phenomenon and the influence of animation and manga, a new generation of artists started developing anime art. To understand this genre, one has to explore the Otaku culture and ACG, aka Animation, Comics and Game; and that anime art is a platform of imagination surrounding the concept of ACG. Enhanced by the global impact of social media, the passion of these fanatics spreads rapidly as one would expect in idol worship. Throughout the course of art history, pop art and subculture burgeoned in the 1960s. The key figure in pop art, US based artist Roy Lichtenstein used comics and cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in his artistic creation. Nude with Joyous Painting achieved a staggering US$46 million at Christie's New York in 2020. This created a giant ripple in the art market and valuation.

[ THE ARTIST ]

From Mass Media to Art Museums: The Concept of Superflat Art The anime subculture exceeds age restrictions and has transformed into a subculture. Takashi Murakami is the first artist to infuse Japanese subculture into contemporary art. His fame soars especially after the exhibition in Versailles in 2010, creating an iconoclastic impact to the art circle. The artist's nihonga practice enabled him to incorporate traditional nihonga rivers, gold leaf and inscriptions into highly polychromatic pop art. Traces of pop art, Japanese anime culture and traditional ukiyo-e could be found in his art. By 2000, the artist proposed the concept of Superflat: the merge of ukiyo-e, animation, Japanese mainstream and subcultures into his art. Superflat could be summarized as prints, animation or simply anime art. Mushrooms in 《Peaked Cap》 is one of Murakami's favourite subjects with bold choice of colours and sporadic big eyes observing the audience from every angle. Such motifs were inspired by dodomeki from GeGeGe no Kitarō by Shigeru Mizuki. Such flat composition is an iconic kitsche art of the artist, as he juxtaposes traditional concepts and contemporary depictions, encapsulating the delightful memories of the artist. Superflat is the artist's contemporary interpretation of Japanese art. The Mushroom series also carry a deeper implication and incongruous existence of such "flat" culture.

From Childhood Memories to Self-Indulgence in the Virtual World "Anime is a unique experience that opens your child-like mind and recalls your delightful childhood memories." - Takashi Murakam i

the distant idealistic form of Japanese subculture. Kojiro Matsumoto and Emi Kuraya of Kaikai Kiki Gallery explore anime art and the desires aroused by kawaii girls. Also inspired by manga, Takeru Amano infused Japanese manga into the Venus motif as a unique depiction. Cartoon figures and flat silky paints that excels the refined printing articulated the uniqueness of her work.

Anime art transformed subcultures into a world language known by all, by lifting the barriers of incomprehensible visual languages. Cartoon characters inspire and inject one's identity beyond race and cultures. It connects the world with comprehensive and indulgent works of art. In this virtually constructed world, the audience are led through the world o f anime into an idealistic world. It reaches beyond visual representation, as an ubiquitous power of subcultures in a contemporary art movement.

Live On and Dream On As a "big kid" and artist, Edgar Plans believes that "childhood should never end because we should keep pursuing our dreams like a child." For as long as Plans could remember, he had doodled on walls in creative ways without anyone telling him what to draw or not. Painting is a boundless and joyful talent that should be admired and supported by the family. The Plans brothers grew up around their father Juan José Plans (1943-2014), a very talented man who wore the hats of a broadcasting host, reporter, director, and science fiction writer. Whenever their father worked at a low 4-seater table, the Plans brothers would sit beside him and doodle unrestrainedly as the clickety-clack of the typewriter echoed in the atmosphere. The boys were unconsciously influenced by their knowledgeable father's magical stories of fantasy, wackiness, suspense, delight, and horror. Plans often incorporates simple yet powerful text symbols in his paintings, which are not only inspirations from the

Born in Madrid, Spain in 1977, Plans is 45 years old this year. Always having a beard, he is now a husband and father who actively participates in social media and art communities. His artworks are often characterized by bold, dynamic outlines that express childlike wonders and subtle humors. A closer look at the fine styles and colors reveals profound implications that are deeply appealing to new-generation collectors. Over the past two to three years, Plans quickly became a key investment target for urban collectors. Half self-taught and half formally-trained, Plans came from a simple, straightforward background in the creative industry. According to his estimation, he has set off on this creative journey for at least forty years. At 19 years old, Plans met Sandra Rodriguez, an archaeology and history student, with whom he married in 2010 after more than 10 years together. Their daughter Olivia, born in 2018, has inherited the family's artistic instincts as she also liked to doodle. Plans has proudly shared

even more imaginative level.

The Beginning of an Art Hero In 1985, Plans moved to Gijón, a coastal city in northern Spain, with his family when he was 8 years old. He continued with freestyle doodling until he was "forced" to attend art lessons with his older sister. However, he only enjoyed drawing sequential stories at that time; he was not interested in painting traditional fruit still life or making charcoal sketches of plaster sculptures at all. Once in an interview, Plans said, "More than choosing [to paint], the painting has chosen me." At 15 years old, he gradually sensed his desire to portray reality through painting and sketching– that was when he began to work on academic subjects and painting skills. For two years, he learned to express internal ideas through painting at José Maria Ramos's art studio. Slowly, Plans came to realize that he does not need someone standing behind him to watch

on his own quest. Plans rented the art studio of late Asturian artist Nicanor Piñole (1878-1978) and continued with academic training in the attic there. By successfully obtaining an Art History degree from the University of Oviedo, Plans managed to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional artist. Plans recalls the thrilling surprise when he learned that a painting was sold at his first exhibition. Although it has been more than 20 years ago, this impressive experience has inspired Plans to make a living as an artist. Looking at Plans' exhibition participation throughout the years, he began attending miscellaneous group exhibitions in Madrid and Gijón in 1998. In 2001, he held his first solo exhibition in collaboration with Fundación Alvargonzález Gijón. In 2004, his work received an award at the Contemporary Art Week "AlNorte 04" along with a scholarship from El Comercio. Plans' early works were

characterized by a combination of Expressionism and figurative painting. The abstract, simple symbols and outlines in his works demonstrate his innocent spirit and pure visual aesthetics that resemble the wonders of child paintings.

Having grown up in Southern Europe, Plans' paintings deliver a natural sense of warmth through themes based on his life experiences and issues he cares about. He has an admiration for street art including graffiti, comics, illustrations, as well as animation movies. His artworks have been critically influenced by the urban contemporary character styles in these works. He also learns by observing the styles of masters like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Takashi Murakami, and mixing in a blend of his own unique characteristics. Plans likes to apply white or colored outlines to urban landscapes and country views on a gray background to form a chalk-like scribbly texture. Plans has received numerous awards for his artworks, including the poster he designed for Feria Internacional de Muestras de Asturias (FIDMA) in 2009. This work earned the artist wide acclaim for forming the imagery of a prosperous shipping industry through varying sizes of cubes and rectangular color blocks in a staggering pattern. Around 2009, Plans created "Animal Hero", a character with Mickey Mouse-like ears and big eyes in a helmet and cape. The stylish elements from comics and movies have made this figure one of the artist's most iconic signatures. By telling interesting little stories as a superhero or in the disguise of a pilot, veterinarian, architect, soccer player, chef, cyclist, or painter, this character makes an appeal about politics and current events.

in Spain, the growing requests for art expos and exhibitions will introduce his works to a greater audience in other parts of the world.

The Superpowers of Rising Art Celebrities Chance favors the prepared mind. Expanding his partnership with the galleries, Plans participated in Art Miami, KIAF Seoul, and London

The recent rise of social media and Internet art shops has undoubtedly created a blue ocean for emerging artists. The launch of Plans' artworks on Artsy in 2019 instantly made him the second bestselling artist of that year. Subsequently, his works also became available on secondary market auctions, particularly the dynamic Asian auction 19

philosophy in all of Plans' artworks throughout the years. As he once wrote, "The real superheroes with superpowers exist among us. It is not easy to identify them because they want to stay unnoticed. However, you can find them if you look carefully. Your superpower is not about flying or stretching your body elastically, or seeing through walls. It is about learning, smiling, sharing, and most importantly, hard working. The power is in your hands. Now is the time to visit a nearby bookstore." Clearly, Plans has combined his personal insights from life experience and his father's lifelong inspirations into the recent series of hero sculptures: "Artist Hero" (2019), "Power of Letters" (2021), and "Reading Hero" (2021). The adorable hero figures are freestyle and full of wonderful imaginations. markets. Before this launch, only a handful of Plans' works could be found at small auctions in Madrid with unimpressive selling prices. It was not until 2020 when SBI Tokyo, Ravenel Taipei, and Poly Hong Kong began to recommend his works did the small oil paintings start to sell at exceedingly higher than expected prices, in millions of NTD dollars. In 2021, even more auctioneers joined the venture of aunctioning Plans' works. The selling prices continued to rise, reaching 4.41 million RMB (approximately 20 million NTD or 700 thousand USD) at a Shanghai auction in March 2022, breaking the artist's highest auction record. It is no surprise that the multi-branch Almine Rech Gallery from Paris came to seek collaboration with Plans upon discovering his market potential. The gallery built three customized exhibitions for Plans between 2021 and 2022, including the "Kawaii" group show in Shanghai, "Once Upon a Time" tribute exhibition for great French writers in Paris, and "The Wall" in Brussels–a wall of paintings that foreshadowed the later development of NFT profile pictures. Plans' artworks have become increasingly popular as they attract many new collectors from Asia. In 2020, the Warehouse Gallery from Hong Kong's Warehouse Optical invited Plans to participate in the solo exhibition "Optical Hero." In addition, K11 Musea, founded by Adrian Cheng Chi-kong of New World Development, also held Plans' pop up exhibitions "The Power of Letters" at K11 Guangzhou in May 2020 and Hong Kong K11 in 2021. These pop up exhibitions formed popular check-in locations for young people. Simultaneously launched with the exhibitions are highly popular, limited edition sculptures and merchandise jointly designed by K11 and Misha Made. The artist believed that everyone can be a hero when they obtain powers from knowledge and reading. This has been a consistent

Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMoMA) in September 2021. The exhibition theme was the "Freedom to Dream and Want to Be," featuring over 100 exhibits distributed across six exhibition halls. This is certainly an important milestone for the artist. The theme was about raising environmental awareness under climate change. No one could have thought that the leader of this country, who once embraced dreams and freedom, would start the most gruesome war of the 21st century six months later. Beyond national boundaries, Plans' works have been collected by various public institutions around the world, such as the Havana Museum of Contemporary Art (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de la Habana, Cuba), the Fine Arts Museum of Asturias (Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias), Pinacoteca Eduardo Úrculo Municipal Art Gallery, the General Junta of the Principality of Asturias (Junta General del Principado de Asturias), the Art and Industrial Creation Centre (LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial), the La Caixa Foundation of Barcelona (Fundación La Caixa), and the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation (Fundación Cristina Peterson) in Madrid. Plans likes to convey positive thinking through art, hence he often writes words of encouragement in his paintings. Some examples include "I am a Hero," "Don't forget your dreams," "Did I do my best to be happy in my life," "What's your power," "Power is in you." Other than using heroes as a symbol of power, he is also very passionate

Is the metaverse an extension of dreams? Plans released the NFT "Lil Heroes" project in December 2021, for which he painted over 150 figures and 50 classic artworks. A total of 7,777 NFTs were jointly completed by Curatible, the art collectors team for this NFT project, and Exile Content Studio. Launched on January 16, 2022, the project attracted over 40,000 fans to Discord and quickly became first place in OpenSea trading volume on the first day. Up until the deadline of this article on April 21, 2022, Lil Heroes had accumulated an astonishing trading volume of 17.8K ETH (about 55 million USD). Not long ago, this NFT project was advertised on the Times Square digital billboard in New York and broadcasted to the world. Balvin, the famous Latin Reggae star is not only a fan of Plans' works but also one of the first celebrity collectors of Lil Heroes NFT. Among Plans' 6 NFTs for auction in March 2022 in Hong Kong, #4751 Bath Time was sold for the highest price of $819,000 HKD (about 3.05 million NTD or $105,000 USD). Over the past couple of years, Plans' artworks have swirled through the urban art collectors' community alongside other Spanish artists like Javier Calleja, Okokume, and Rafa Macarrón. The adorable and healing styles are very appealing to new- generation collectors as the bidding prices continue to rise. The art market is a place for dream makers. Never stop dreaming because it may take us afar to the metaverse!

Despite the inherent difference, art of the East and West come to a convergence: new generation of Chinese art took reference of Western techniques, while Western art, led by the US counterparts, such as the Dada movement, abstract expressionism and pop art, borrowed Eastern ideology of Chan and calligraphic art. This enriched the Western art scene. With regards to ink art, one can refer to Ding Yan-yong and Walasse Ting, who took their own approaches to incorporating Chinese and Western art.

GENUINE EMOTIONS EXPRESSED THROUGH THE BRUSH Ding Yan-yong dedicated his life to art education to promote Chinese modern art along with Lin Feng-mian and Guan Liang. He worked alongside Zao Wou-ki and Li Keran in Chongqing Academy of Art. Since 1929, he dedicated his research towards connoisseurship of classical paintings and Jinshi relics. Zhu Da, Shi Tao and Jin Nong of Chinese paintings and antique seals were among his subjects of research. This paved his way towards his artistic mission to merge Chinese and Western art. This sale offered exceptional works by Ding Yan-yong in the

THE ENCOUNTER OF TWO PRODIGIES Ding Yan-yong and Walasse Ting were considered as gems of the artistic community in the East and West in the 1970s. Their common interest in ink art and their exposure secured their friendship, and Lam Kwong was also the major bridge in such a relationship. Colossal works Mountain Fairy was sold for NT$2.64 million, Fish, Crab and Frog for NT$ 1.8 million, Landscape for NT$ 1.32 million. Hence it is foreseeable that similar exhibited works such as Riverscape and Frogs Croaking in Lotus Pond would achieve outstanding results. The monochrome paintings of Walasse Ting offered were painted in 1968-1970 at the pinnacle of his career after entering the Western art circle. At

Commissioned by Lam Kwong, Ding Yan-yong carved a soapstone seal for Walasse Ting in 1969, thence marked the relationship of the three. This period was the peak of both Ding Yan-yong and Walasse Ting in the international ink art world. This seal could be found in Lady (Lot 627) and carried a symbolic bonding between the two artists. In 1977, Walasse Ting visited Hong Kong to pay a visit to Fang Chao-long and Ding Yan-yong for an artistic exchange. Later Ting wrote to Lam describing their encounter while eating noodles. Despite the differences in styles of Ding Yan-yong and Walasse Ting, both shared their dedication to their artistic creation by combining styles of the East and the West. Their works are vibrant and innovative. Through this curated sale, their significant works and archival documents are gathered to provide significant academic insights into the historical development of the art with prominent values in the market. Using their common medium ink, the two artists had shown the graphical representation of the West and the spiritual demonstration of Chinese art, as a hommage to traditions and an artistic expression of the post-war era. The experimental approaches of Ding Yanyong and Walasse Ting made them renowned artists of the East and West. 33

[ WINE ] Last weekend, I went out with friends to a whisky bar for a drink. K, a new mother who hadn't had much me-time recently, was tongue-tied when faced with the plethora of whisky labels on the shelf. "How can there be so many new brands I've never seen before? I've only refrained from drinking for the last two years. Are there this many new distilleries?" Well, yes and no. Nowadays, even experienced collectors may not be able to identify all the brands listed at a liquor store because of so-called independent bottlings (IB). In a previous article, "Torn between Independent Bottling and Official Bottling,"we have introduced how IB differs from official bottling (OB) in that IB factories usually do not distill and produce whisky; rather, they purchase whisky from distilleries and bottle the whisky then paste on their own labels for sale. OB's core range products emphasize the true spirit of a distillery; consistent and classic. IBs do not share such a burden. They focus on allowing each barrel of whisky to express its own unique style and provided with a large enough warehouse to store whisky. IB producers can both store whisky for an unimaginably long time and break longheld traditions. In a time when blended whisky are fashionable, they can launch a single malt whisky of the original intensity or place the distilled spirit into a bourbon cask that once only served for containing sherry. These trials allow even more possibilities for whisky as well as greater fun and surprises for consumers to discover and to encounter.

"DRINK IB, COLLECT OB": HOW DOES ONE PICK AN IB THAT IS WORTH COLLECTING? A decade ago, several collectors raised the slogan, "Drink IB, Collect OB." At that time, IBs were typically cheaper than OBs. However, general consumers were unfamiliar with IBs and because of its uneven qualities. This, however, suited collectors who are familiar with the classic tastes of individual distilleries very well. Searching for IBs to them are digging for treasures. However, in the recent decade, consumers worldwide have increased their understanding of whisky. Moreover, as whisky prices continue

miscellaneous IB products, bottlers who are able to consistently select high-quality products showcase their taste and power as well as their devotion towards sustainably managing their brand. When bottlers gain supporters worldwide, they can even come to be viewed as an independent brand like a distillery. For example, the Italian Independent Bottler Samaroli became well-known worldwide because of his exceptional ability in selecting high-quality whisky. It has won the affirmation of whisky collectors ever since 1979. On Whiskybase, a global whisky information website, 6 of its bottles are ranked in the top 10.

From which distillery did the liquor come from? Another key is from which distillery did the liquor in the IBs come from. Regarding several popular OB brands on the second-hand market, such as the Macallan, the marketability of the distillery also affects their IB market. Specifically, when OB prices skyrocket, consumers are more willing to purchase their IB products at a comparatively friendly price.

to find single cask Independent Bottling products distilled from 1970s or even earlier that OBs can no longer offer. These demands made single cask IB products bottled before 2000 extremely popular at present. However, individual bottlers also face tons of problems nowaday. For example, noticing the single cask market trend, an increasing number of distillers have entered the competition with an emphasis on whisky variations. Similar to products of numerous independent bottlers, these single-barrel products and small-batch single malt whisky have marketed their uniqueness as a selling point. Independent Bottler that previously monopolized the single cask market are facing frustratingly fierce competition. In the meantime, distillers have started to neglect Independent Bottler they used as agents in the past and have begun to directly provide consumers with service option of buying entire barrel or bottling for consumers. These changes have substantially reduced the opportunities for Independent Bottler to obtain barrels of whisky. As a result, we are seeing an increasing number of young IBs and large Independent Bottler crossing over into distil business. For example, in 1993, Gordon & Mcphail purchased Benromach Distillery. In 2002, Signatory acquired Edradour winery, and Adelphi acquired Ardnamurchan. ▼

"IBs make so much money. Why don't we get a barrel and sell it ourselves?"K exclaimed excitedly. "You're blinded by the need for diaper money,"the rest of us laughed.

In light of the drastic growth of the IB market, some experienced consumers have considered the possibility of getting a barrel and bottling the contents themselves. Some people are fascinated by the process, enamored of the idea and sense of achievement from selecting a cask from dozens or hundreds of samples, and of the thought of establishing their own unique style of whisky. Some people believe that gifting whisky bottled from a barrel they themselves selected is interesting and meaningful. Some think that obtaining a barrel, bottling the contents, and selling the product makes for good business. However, getting a barrel involves investing a lump sum of money all in one go and hidden problems are abound. Specifically, when barrels whisky are in high demand at present, whether one can obtain good quality barrels requires connections and the ability to select outstanding whisky from limited samples.

[ WINE ] In addition, consumers normally do not have the opportunity to

the operation of pouring the whisky into bottles, attaching a label, and shipping to buyers. The process is long and tedious. Moreover, it is hard to tell if all the information is accurate and transparent during bottling and labeling. For example, whether the whisky inside the bottle is exactly the same as the sample you selected, and whether the number of final bottles is accurate can be questionable. This requires absolute trust in the agent. Things to consider for people who wish to get their personal bottlings in the market are a bit more. For example, do you want to focus on the quality of the whisky or its label? Also, does the individual or the company that bottled the whisky have enough brand power for consumer to make a purchase without having to taste it first? Some small bottlers have used eye-catching labels to attract public's attention. Some bottlers have submitted their products in competitions to gain rating from opinion leaders and whisky critics. These approaches have yielded favorable results in the past. However, in today's fiercely competitive market, consumers have found those approaches banal. For collectors, when choosing a bottle for collection and investment, they must realistically consider the whisky's quality, scarcity, and monetization ability on the second-hand market.

Also, compared to general financial investments, because whisky barrel investment is a relatively new industry, there is no existing method to measure its ROI. Barrel whisky compared to bottle whisky has a relatively weak liquidity and a longer cycle. Moreover, the transaction cannot be handled by general consumers themselves. Consequently, the time for realization and the profit are unpredictable.

Ambiguity of Ownership Before the whisky barrel invested bottled or sold, it must be stored in the warehouse of the production site or at a bonded warehouse for several years to several decades. The transfer of ownership of the barrels and transactions must undergo comprehensive and nationally licensed registration and transfer operations. The ownership transfer certificate provided by the agent company usually is not legally binding. Thus, to be able to ensure from a distance, that the ownership of a barrel is indeed transferred, is a key point in investing in barrels. However, this process is extremely tedious. Most small or intermediate dealers do not involve this transfer process in their procedure. If unfortunately, before this barrel sold and made profit, the dealer declares bankruptcy, consumers may not be able to regain their assets due to ambiguity of ownership.

Text / Janet Lee

Photo / Hotel Château du Grand-Lucé

Hotel Château du Grand-Lucé
