T

hank you for your support of Ravenscroft’s 2014-2015 Fine Arts program! As Ravenscroft looks boldly to the future, we embrace our history and build upon our foundation as a small parish school. The arts have always been an important part of educating our students and, consistent with our mission, nurturing their individual potential. Over the past 15 decades we have strengthened our commitment to the arts, thanks to our dedicated faculty and generous supporters. Today, we look forward to continuing our legacy of excellence by helping our students to master the Lead From Here competencies qualities like motivation, resilience, and collaboration - through the Fine Arts. Specifically, our goal has always been to help students develop their own creativity as well as appreciate the talents of others around them. We know that the success of our programs – in the arts, in athletics and in all academic disciplines - is due to the quality relationships that exist between excellent educators, talented students, engaged parents and supportive patrons. I hope you and your family will join me for many performances and exhibitions this year, and that you will support the businesses of our generous patrons. Together, we can appreciate each child’s success and the significance these students bring to our community through their artistic expression.

Doreen C. Kelly Head of School

Cover artwork: Go Green! Fifth graders worked in cooperative groups recycling household items to build large imaginary critters. Each skeleton was smoothed over with a paper mache skin and painted. Our classroom “ junk drawer” of broken toys and treasures was plundered and used for the quirky flourishes that helped define each animal’s personality!

W

elcome to the 2014-15 Fine Arts season at Ravenscroft School. Together, our students and faculty travel on a creative and aesthetic journey. The Arts embody our Lead From Here initiative, as participation in the arts encourages self-awareness, promotes collaboration and provides a powerful and positive outlet to change the world around us. The future will require innovative approaches to problem solving, and a commitment to arts participation is beneficial to building those skills in our community. The fulfillment of our mission also encourages us to build a lasting appreciation for the arts within the students that pass through the Fine Arts Center. Please take the time to peruse our booklet, enjoy the faces of the children, and acknowledge and thank the many patrons of our program. Please feel free to share this booklet with your friends that might be interested in what we have to offer here at Ravenscroft School. A list of events can be found on pages 6 and 7 in this booklet. Mark your calendars and join us for a performance or gallery exhibition by our talented students. To find out more about our department, visit us at www.ravenscroft.org/page.cfm?p=277. The Fine Arts is dependent upon the support of the Fine Arts Association (FAA) as well as our Corporate Partners. The FAA typically meets once a month and aids the department in bringing quality education and presentations to our community. Please join us whenever you can or sign up to donate your time or talent at www.ravenscroft.org/faavolunteer. This year, we are pleased to have our own car magnet for the Fine Arts. Please stop by the RavenZone to purchase one and show your pride and support of our program. Ravenscroft believes that “a student’s talents are cultivated and creative mind is enriched by a comprehensive program of Fine Arts.” As faculty, we are aware how the best of life is positively impacted by the arts. We strive to prepare students at Ravenscroft to benefit from the study of the art and, for those so proficient, a life in the arts. Please come and join us! Dr. David McChesney Director of Fine Arts

* THE VISITING ARTIST PORTFOLIO SERIES Ravenscroft initiated the Visiting Artist Portfolios Series in 1996 in an effort to promote excellence in the visual arts. Sponsored by the Victor E. Bell, III ’74 Endowment Fund, the Portfolio Series invites visiting professional artists and educators from distinguished colleges, universities, and the professional art world to Ravenscroft each year. Artists are selected based on their expertise in a given medium as it relates to our art curriculum. In recent years, the Portfolio Series included painters, printmakers, architects, sculptors, and photographers from higher education programs at Dartmouth College, Swarthmore College, Tyler School of Art, Auburn University, Denison College, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Gallery exhibits and visiting artist workshops enhance our curriculum by exposing our students to working artists’ contemporary ideas and techniques. The Visiting Artist Portfolios Series cultivates aesthetic appreciation for the visual arts.

THE HUGH MORTON, JR. ART COLLECTION Bob Timberlake established the Hugh Morton, Jr. Art Collection, permanently housed in the Fine Arts Center and the Library & Technology Center, in 1997 in memory of his good friend and colleague. Each year, a committee of students and faculty is formed to visit different art venues and select a piece of art to add to our permanent collection. We value this collection for its ability to enrich our lives. The individual pieces of art are also used as teaching tools to explain different techniques and styles of art to our students. The collection is a wonderful legacy for future generations.

Community involvement is not just about writing a check; it’s about being committed to the places where we live, work and play. It’s about improving the lives of our neighbors and investing in our future. We believe in and support the causes and organizations that share our beliefs and goals to invest in the community. Newcomb and Company was founded on the principles of improving the comfort and lives of those in our area, like the folks at Ravenscroft.
