Welcome to the 2020-21 Season of Fine Arts at Ravenscroft.

Our experience in the virtual world last spring sparked an

amazing surge in creativity and resilience in our Fine Arts community here at Ravenscroft. Our faculty are poised to engage in new ideas and collaborations in arts education for our hybrid model this fall. Our open growth mindset has provided wonderful opportunities for student personal growth. Combining virtual with on-campus learning demonstrates our commitment to “Inspired Legacy of Learning, Leading and Serving.” I am particularly proud of our innovative solutions for continuing the Private Lessons program, our longest running initiative. Our new Lower School Fine Arts Center proved critical in finding adequate space for teachers and students to work one-on-one while still being distanced, and allowing a “safety first” approach while still providing a social and emotional connection for the children. We continue to be inspired by the work of our faculty and students to produce art on campus and to provide live recordings of performances. Please keep up with our Fine Arts social media accounts and the Ravenscroft's Weekly Calendar for upcoming events. Ravenscroft continues its commitment to cultivating the creative minds engaged in our programs. Life is positively impacted by participation, collaboration, and observation in activities that stimulate and bring together the left and right brain. Our faculty encourage students to thrive from this course of study and to pursue a continued life in the arts. Through education and nurturing, we develop long-lasting interest in the arts with a focus on philanthropy and giving back. The Fine Arts Department enjoys solid partnerships with the Fine Arts Association, the Friends of the Fine Arts, and our Corporate Partners. Please join us or sign up to donate your time or talent at https://www.ravenscroft.org/our-community/parent-involvement/fine-arts-association.

The Fine Arts Association welcomes you!

While the school year will look different, in typical Ravenscroft Fine Arts fashion, we promise to keep it exciting and fun with many opportunities to appreciate the arts throughout the year.

We are excited to announce an exhibition in Pugh Family Lobby by local textile artist, Caitlin Cary, slated for February. Drama performances and musicals are planned throughout the year, and we will happily release titles a little closer to the performance dates. You will have the opportunity to watch beautiful performances from our talented Lower School through Upper School children in strings, band, and choir. For your viewing pleasure, any concerts or performances will be streamed or pre-recorded so that you may watch them from the comfort of your own home. Stay tuned to the Weekly Calendar for updates and announcements on our events, as you'll not want to miss them! The Fine Arts Association (FAA) exists to support the Fine Arts faculty in the production of events both on and off campus. At this time, our monthly meetings will be held virtually; please see the "The Fine Arts Season at a Glance" for scheduled dates and times. Please join us at any time. As an association, we adore and believe in our Fine Arts program and the impact it has on our lives and, more importantly, the lives of our children. Whether strolling through the Fine Arts Center to appreciate the latest masterpieces hanging on the walls or just pausing to listen to the future Broadway stars, there are many ways in which art enriches our lives. And many opportunities for you to be involved in our Fine Arts Association. Why? Well, it’s fun and rewarding! We are the quiet ones, operating behind the scenes, sewing costumes, picking up the ostrich feathers, reminding the children dinner is provided at 5 p.m. after they have been rehearsing for hours. We are the ones leaving magnets on the lockers of our performers and selling flowers at performances, just in case you forgot to bring yours. We help the stage crew and even help you find your seats before a performance. We are here to ensure our Fine Arts faculty and students know they are appreciated. So please, join us to celebrate them, whether that is through your time, your ideas, or funding a performance meal or snacks. We are always happy to have you join us. All our best, Angela H. Keifer and Team President, Ravenscroft Fine Arts Association Fine Arts

Audience Etiquette While at the theatre....

We kindly ask that you follow these simple guidelines: • Please silence all electronic devices. • No food, beverages, or chewing gum inside the theatre. • If you arrive late or have to leave the theatre, please wait until there is a pause between selections or scenes; then enter or exit quietly. • Please take small children on bathroom breaks before the performance begins. • Small children unable to stay silent should be accompanied to the lobby until they are ready to return. • Photos taken with cell phones or tablets create a visual distraction for members of the audience sitting next to and behind you, as well as on stage. Please be mindful of keeping your camera at a resonable level so as not to cause distraction. • Avoid using flash photography. • Stay seated until intermission or the end of the performance. • Hold your applause until the end of a musical selection. • Restrict conversations with those around you to before and after performances so as to not distract others in the audience. • Recycle unwanted programs and booklets into baskets provided when exiting the theatre.

Thank you! Fine Arts

The Visiting Artist Portfolio Series

Ravenscroft initiated the Visiting Artist Portfolio Series in 1996 in an effort to promote excellence in the visual arts. Sponsored by the Victor E. Bell, III ’74 Endowment Fund, the Portfolio Series invites visiting professional artists and educators from distinguished colleges, universities, and the professional art world to Ravenscroft each year. Artists are selected based on their expertise in a given medium as it relates to our art curriculum. In recent years, the Portfolio Series included painters, printmakers, architects, sculptors, and photographers from higher education programs at Dartmouth College, Swarthmore College, Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Auburn University, Denison University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Drexel University, as well as local and regional artists of renown. Gallery exhibits and visiting artist workshops enhance our curriculum by exposing our students to working artists’ contemporary ideas and techniques. The Visiting Artist Portfolio Series cultivates aesthetic appreciation for the visual arts. Our visiting artist for Middle and Upper school this year is:

The O'Keeffe Orchid project for third graders was inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe's practice of observing an object in real life, and drawing what she saw. Students created their own sketchbooks, observed an orchid's bilateral symmetry, overlap, and value gradation, and created their own composition using oil pastels and liquid watercolor. The artist shares “I was born in Singapore, and as I grew up I loved orchids! They were always in the house and almost always in the flower store. I very much enjoyed this art project because of the memories that it brought back from when I was younger. I am very happy I got to do this INCREDIBLE art project!
