Welcome to the 2021-22 season of Ravenscroft fine arts! As we begin the new school year amid continued precautions necessitated by the COVID pandemic, I am reminded of the many ways in which the arts nourish and sustain our spirits in times of difficulty and struggle. In music, theater, and the visual arts, we explore our hopes, doubts, and dreams. Welcome to the 2021-22 season of fine arts at Ravenscroft. The arts continue to grow and thrive in our complex and interdependent world. We view ourselves as a community of artists, of all ages, with the common goal of enriching the lives of all people with whom we connect, on and off campus. Whether in the classroom, studio, on the stage, or on the screen, the study and interaction with the arts stimulates creativity for us all. As we work our way through this school year, our teams collaboratively make adaptations to curriculum that not only expand the foundations of the arts but also promote creative projects in all areas. These adjustments rely on the input of our students and artistic national trends to form the direction of our programs. Ravenscroft continues its commitment to cultivating the creative mind through engagement in our expanding programs. Students are positively impacted by participation, collaboration, and observation of activities that stimulate and bring together the hemispheres of the mind. Faculty encourage students to thrive in this course of study and to pursue a life connected to the arts. We are committed to sharing our work with you so, now more than ever, please keep up with the arts through social media accounts and the school’s Weekly Calendar for upcoming events, whether on the internet or on campus. The Fine Arts Department is supported by the Fine Arts Association, the Friends of the Fine Arts, and our advertisers and Corporate Partners. Please join us or sign up to donate your time or talent at https://www.ravenscroft.org/our-community/parent-involvement/fine-arts-association

Ravenscroft

Fellow Ravenscroft Parents, I would like to add my welcome to what promises to be another great year for the Fine Arts Department at Ravenscroft School. For those returning families, welcome back! For those joining the Ravenscroft family for the first time, it is my joy and privilege to introduce you to some of the diverse and wonderful opportunities that await you and your children in the Fine Arts Department. I must begin by expressing my admiration for everything that this department achieved in the past school year, given the challenges of the pandemic. Performing arts organizations globally have been devastated by the inability to meet together, yet our incredibly talented faculty managed to re-invent performances. The musical “Disney Frozen Jr.” was not only an excellent stage performance, it was the epitome of leadership. Our faculty worked so hard to prepare these students to bring realism to this production despite the needs for masks and distancing, that when the faculty was required to quarantine, the students pretty much ran the show themselves. Our performance schedule includes the musical "The Drowsy Chaperone" on October 22-23, a play scheduled for February 4-5, and a middle school musical April 1-2. Performances by the band, choir, and string ensembles occur throughout the school year; please check the fine arts calendar for more events and details. The Fine Arts Association is an organization of parent volunteers who work with the Fine Arts faculty to support the performances that will take place throughout the year. There are many roles for parents from assisting with stage productions, ushering in the theater, and the stage crew that helps with quick changes to the stage configuration during ensemble concerts. If you would like to find out more about the Fine Arts Association, please join us at any of our regular monthly meetings. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about the Fine Arts Association at simoncapellphotography@gmail.com or (919) 523-3247. Kind regards,

Simon Capell

Audience Etiquette

For theatre performances we kindly ask that you follow these simple guidelines: •

Please silence all electronic devices.

No food, beverages, or chewing gum inside the theatre.

If you arrive late or have to leave the theatre, please wait until there is a pause between selections or scenes; then enter or exit quietly.

Please take small children on bathroom breaks before the performance begins.

Small children unable to stay silent should be accompanied to the lobby until they are ready to return.

Photos taken with cell phones or tablets create a visual distraction for members of the audience sitting next to and behind you, as well as on stage. Please be mindful of keeping your camera at a reasonable level so as not to cause distraction.

Avoid using flash photography.

Stay seated until intermission or the end of the performance.

Hold your applause until the end of a musical selection.

Restrict conversations with those around you to before and after performances so as to not distract others in the audience.

Recycle unwanted programs and booklets into baskets provided when exiting the theatre.

Thank you!

“We insure the uninsurable” I felt motivated to support Ravenscroft, as I believe it is a fine establishment to give my son (and, soon, my daughter) an unparalleled education that will benefit them and other children in their future endeavors.

Bell Tower Series

Graphite, watercolor, stitching on fabric

76 Ravenscroft

The Bell Tower on the Ravenscroft campus is an iconic symbol of our school. Eighth grade students were asked to depict it in detail through a variety of media. Students began with plein-air drawings using graphite on paper with an emphasis on showing the detail and proportion of the bell tower and its surroundings. Using our first drawing as a reference, we moved on to watercolors, and then on to a stitched line drawing on fabric. Shirley's depiction of the Ravenscroft Bell Tower is incredibly detailed, beautifully executed, and a lovely tribute to this iconic part of our school.
