VISION & VOICE A message from our Head of School

Embrace Possibility: The Campaign for Ravenscroft Doreen Kelly, Head of School DEAR RAVENSCROFT ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS: Let me begin my letter to you by saying ‘Thank You!’ to every person who contributed to Ravenscroft this past year. In this Report on Giving, we highlight and thank the many donors and volunteers who provide our school with the resources we need to support inspiring teachers and aspiring students. I am deeply thankful as Head of School to have so many friends in our community who love Ravenscroft and are supporting its success. And I hope you know how much we value your investment in this wonderful school. Ravenscroft has a long tradition of community members, volunteers, and leaders stepping forward at critical points in our history. Today is no different. In these pages, you will read stories about

parents, grandparents, alumni, and Board members who are giving of their time, talent, and treasure to help us fulfill our mission. An exciting and significant story in this issue showcases our Parents’ Association and their endowment fund. What began a number of years ago during the Bold Initiatives Campaign has just reached the $1,000,000 threshold! Few schools in the country can boast of having a million dollar endowment that was started by their Parents’ Association. Just amazing! And you will also enjoy reading the stories behind the donors to our Lead From Here movement and financial aid endowments. We are so fortunate to have community members who understand the importance of these two efforts and who are willing to step forward with their gifts and passion. With the importance of supporting mission-critical work to serve our students today and tomorrow at the top of my and the Board’s priorities, I am excited to announce that work has begun to launch a campaign for Ravenscroft.

Embrace Possibility: The Campaign for Ravenscroft will focus on strengthening our tradition of excellence through annual giving, providing greater access to more students through increased financial aid and student support endowment, and by endowing our signature Lead From Here initiative. This campaign will be a game-changer for Ravenscroft, and parents, alumni, and friends of the School will hear more about this effort and how they can be involved over the next several months. I hope that you will continue your engagement with Ravenscroft. We look forward to speaking with you about our plans for the future and how your investment in our School can preserve our past and help prepare for our future.

With gratitude,

Doreen C. Kelly Head of School

VISION & VOICE A message from our Assistant Head of School

Strengthening Our Endowment Philip Higginson, Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement DEAR FRIENDS: Philanthropy changes our world every day. Gifts to nonprofit organizations have a transforming and long-term impact on our community. I want to thank you for your generous gifts to Ravenscroft as we educate students who are learning how to change their world. I am confident that your investment in Ravenscroft will have a lasting impact as we nurture individual potential and prepare our students to thrive in a complex and interdependent world. Donor loyalty is a hallmark of great independent schools. The Class of 2014’s greatest gift may have been their suggestion that we start an alumni loyalty giving society, one that recognizes alumni who give every year regardless of the size of their gift. This fall we announced the establishment of the Golden Ravens Society. As you review the many names of our loyal donors, consider the ripple effect of your gift — one gift impacts more than 200 teachers, who then

impact 1,167 students, who are being taught, through Lead From Here, to make a difference in their communities. Your loyalty is greatly appreciated. This past year, more than 1,000 donors made donations totalling $1,782,348 to Ravenscroft, including $801,911 to the Annual Fund. In addition to philanthropic support, Ravenscroft is supported by a number of incredible volunteers from the Parents’ Association, Ravens Athletic Club, and Fine Arts Association. Culminating with a spectacular “Red” Auction, the Parents’ Association made a gift of $135,000 to the Parents’ Association Endowment Fund. The Ravens Athletic Club held the largest golf tournament ever and raised more than $48,000 for Ravenscroft athletics. Loyalty and annual support are vitally important to fulfilling Ravenscroft’s mission. In order to build on these two important markers of success, Ravenscroft is preparing to launch a campaign to secure the resources that will allow our School to fulfill our mission well into the future. Embrace Possibility: The Campaign for Ravenscroft will focus primarily on strengthening our endowment. Through

this campaign, we will endow our Lead From Here movement and significantly increase our financial aid and student support services endowment. Through the generosity of many donors, our endowment currently has a market value just over $19,500,000. Unfortunately, we lag behind many of our peer schools in North Carolina and in the Southeast in the size of our endowment. Endowments remain one of the most important ways schools can remain strong, vibrant, and fiscally sustainable places of education. In the coming months, we look forward to sharing more about Embrace Possibility with you and how you can be involved in securing our bright future. On behalf of our Ravens — from the Class of 2015 to 2028 — thank you for changing our world. Regards,

Philip C. Higginson Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement

N 1999, RAVENSCROFT’S PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION (PA) made an unprecedented pledge of $500,000 to the Bold Initiatives capital campaign that was split evenly to support building construction and to endow the Parents ‘ Association Distinguished Faculty Award. That type of big thinking continued a decade later. In 2010, the PA proposed to the School’s Board of Trustees to grow the endowment fund to $1 million and provide a consistent source of money to the school, what co-president Barbara Day called “a solid foundation” for the future. Like many schools, Ravenscroft had long been supported by an active parents group that welcomes new families, strengthens campus ties and traditions, and raises money to fund the administration’s “wish list” of upgrades and innovations. Every year, the PA recognized the importance of outstanding teaching with the Distinguished Faculty Award and invested tens of thousands of dollars in programs, technology, and facility improvements for the School. But this commitment to growing the endowment to $1 million was nothing short of transformational. “The gift the Parents’ Association made in support of the Bold Initiatives Campaign inspired the entire community,” Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement Phil Higginson said. “Their commitment to grow the endowment to a million dollars is unique and serves as a model for other independent schools.” At the time, Day said, the idea just seemed sensible, given the enormous amount of time and talent association members were putting in each year. “The Parents’ Association would hold different fundraising events throughout the year, and at the end of the year we’d review the school’s wish list to see what we could cover,” she explained. “Sherri Cass, my co-president in 2010, had the idea that, rather than using all of the money we raised each year to fund the wish list, we could create an endowment that would pay for those needs through investments.” As the PA investigated the process for making their idea a reality, they decided to bring back the Ravenscroft Auction, which had been on hiatus for a decade, because they knew the proven money-maker would put them well on their way to meeting their goal. Getting the fund established was a “lengthy process” because it involved amending the association’s by-laws, said Iren Hianik, who with Co-President Liza Williams assumed the association leadership in 2011. “We worked with the school’s attorney, Jean Gordon Carter, and Leonard Johnson in the Ravenscroft business office,” Hianik said. “It was a friendly process, but it took almost the whole school year” to complete.

In contrast to the paperwork, Hianik recalled, winning parents’ support for the plan was simple. “Getting the Parents’ Association membership to support the endowment was an easy process, because everyone understood the value of having an endowment,” she explained. “It provides a pot of money that continues growing.” In fact, the Ravenscroft community embraced the fundraising goal with such enthusiasm that the association helped reach the mark in four years, rather than five — and that was even after setting aside the $20,000 in annual contributions the association makes for the faculty award, media center purchases, and various needs at the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools.

The gift the Parents’ Association made in support of the Bold Initiatives Campaign inspired the entire community.

Stephanie Poole, who was serving as co-president with Amy Baker when the fund hit its mark during the 2013-14 school year, noted that their endeavors were generally so successful that association leadership didn’t feel any particular pressure about the goal. “We were confident that we could make it by the end of our term, but that wasn’t our top focus,” she said. “We just worked on creating good fundraising events and supporting our volunteers. We had such a wonderful group of people on our team. Our success was a combination of talented, dedicated volunteers and long hours put in by all.” This year’s co-presidents, Kelly Gould ’90 and Ramona Holdstock ’89, said that the endowment “gives us the security of knowing that every fundraiser, luncheon, or activity that the Parents’ Association plans will make a positive impact on campus.” Baker agreed, noting that parents feel invested in association fundraising because it represents a “partnership with their school. Parents get to feel immediately what their hours of volunteering do for the school, such as a refurbished athletic field, new Fine Arts equipment, or professional development” for teachers. With the endowment protecting the Parents’ Association’s investments on behalf of Ravenscroft, she added, “they also know that the benefit of these funds is there for future generations of students.” R

PARENTS, ALUMNI, AND BOARD MEMBERS INVEST IN LEAD FROM HERE MOVEMENT

6

Ravenscroft magazine

EAD OF SCHOOL DOREEN KELLY

characterizes Ravenscroft’s Lead From Here movement as “innovative” and “unbelievably important.” To illustrate her point, she describes an everyday kindergarten experience that most parents and grandparents will readily remember: the time-honored tradition of classroom jobs. “We do this intuitively — we give every child the opportunity to step forward and be the line leader or present the weather,” she said. “They’re getting the chance to exercise leadership in front of their peers.” Translating that instinct into a comprehensive curriculum, she said, means considering the ways students at Ravenscroft are given such opportunities. “The question becomes, ‘How do I begin to get an organization to answer that question, not so much for the kid who intuitively steps up to fill that [leadership] space but for every kid under my care?’” Kelly said.

EADING SELF, LEADING WITH OTHERS Lead From Here is custom-designed to answer those questions. Ravenscroft is developing a curriculum in partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), a top global provider of executive education, that weaves leadership and global citizenship education into all subject areas and across all grade levels. A grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation has helped fund the Upper School’s curriculum design. According to Director of Development Anna White Hosea ’98, additional funding for Lead From Here covers ongoing teacher training, retreats for students, parent education, on-site collaboration with CCL leaders, and research and development of the schoolwide curriculum. Lead From Here also compels the School to seek support for the expansion of financial aid opportunities to nurture and support a more socioeconomically diverse student body. Parents, alumni, and board members who have invested in Lead From Here view the initiative as essential to the School’s mission to nurture individual potential and prepare students to thrive in a complex and interdependent world. Parents Todd and Diana Stiefel said they contributed to support Lead From Here because it will foster their children’s growth in school and beyond. “Academics are only a part of the education children need. They need to learn how to work with others, how to be accountable for themselves and to apply critical thinking to everyday problems,” Diana said. “Lead From Here provides that.” “I want them to perform at a high academic level, but, more importantly, I want them to build their emotional intelligence and resilience,” Todd said. Resilience is one of 15 competencies incorporated into Ravenscroft’s Citizen Leader Framework. Examples of other competencies include self-awareness, empathy, cultural inclusivity, resourcefulness, and collaboration. Board of Trustees member Caryn McNeill, who with husband John also made a contribution to support Lead From Here, said she sees the applications as limitless.

“We have so many opportunities to lead every day — at home, at school, at work, in our communities. The old-school idea that you’re only a leader if you’re the quarterback or the CEO just isn’t true,” she said. “The thing that’s empowering about Lead From Here is that it invites all of our students to think of themselves as leaders. That idea — and the skills that go with it — is what they will take into their communities and beyond.”

EADERSHIP FOR A CHANGING WORLD McNeill called the School’s partnership with CCL “groundbreaking stuff” that addresses the pressing need for leaders who are prepared for a rapidly changing world. “Jobs and workplaces are changing, too,” she said. “Young people with great ideas and the wherewithal to champion them are able to do just about anything. But that means they need to be ready to lead at a young age. They need to be strategic, resourceful and adaptive, and they need to be able to connect with people and motivate them.” John Parker, a member of Ravenscroft’s Lead From Here Parent Advocates, said the curriculum’s focus on developing citizen leadership is a natural expansion of the school’s long-time emphasis on service and character traits. “With Lead From Here, they’re building out their intentions in this area in a way that’s holistic and comprehensive,” he said. He also expressed confidence in the expertise CCL brings to the initiative. “I’ve had experience with CCL and feel really good about what they do in leadership development for business leaders,” he said. “The partnership with CCL is a dramatic relationship — a school with good intentions and strong education experience partnering with a global organization that works with adults. When Lead From Here was described to me, I could already see what would happen.” McNeill is particularly impressed with how the process involves the entire Ravenscroft community. “We are still building parts of the curriculum, and some of the most important feedback we’re receiving is from our students. We’re asking them, after retreats and other activities, how things went. And with the benefit of their input, we are making improvements as we go,” she said. “Ravenscroft is truly an incubator for all this, which means that where we come out will be uniquely our own.” R

Financial Aid Donors Honor Ravenscroft’s Legacy, Embrace Diversity By Karen Lewis Taylor

HEN GLENN E. “CHIP” ANDERSON started kindergarten at Ravenscroft in the 1940s, he wasn’t quite old enough to attend public school, and Ravenscroft was just a small primary school in downtown Raleigh. In the years since then, Anderson’s children and grandchildren have attended Ravenscroft as well, reaping the benefits of its growth into one of the finest independent schools in the South. The school has benefited from the longstanding relationship as well, as family members have been active supporters of Ravenscroft’s mission. During his time on the Board of Trustees, from 2005-2014, Anderson had a front-row seat as the bold vision of the 2011 strategic plan was crafted and the groundbreaking framework of Lead From Here was imagined. Today, Chip and his wife, Judy, join other dedicated parents and alumni in leading Ravenscroft in another critical initiative: the expansion of financial aid opportunities to nurture and support a more socioeconomically diverse student body.

IDENTIFYING A NEED

$2.1 MILLION CURRENT NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID FOR STUDENTS

The goal of making more financial aid available to qualifying students grew, according to Head of School Doreen Kelly, from the realization during the development of the 2006 strategic plan that the current level of aid “wasn’t “YOU’VE GOT TO BE IN A VIBRANT ENVIRONMENT IN going to cut it to meet the objectives.” “Since 1995-96, there has been a commitment ORDER FOR KIDS TO GET TO EXERCISE LEADERSHIP — to financial aid as a fixed percentage of the budWHICH COMPELS US TO BE MORE SOCIOECONOMICALLY get. At a time when Ravenscroft was setting ambitious goals for student enrollment, including an inIn the ongoing strategic effort to offer more financial aid crease in socioeconomic diversity, school leaders knew while being sensitive to tuition costs, the school has found they’d have to improve those numbers. The board targeted support among generous friends — alumni and parents who growth in the percentage of financial aid funds drawn from believe in sharing the excellence of a Ravenscroft education with tuition payments. Even as the recession hit in 2008 and families from a wider range of socioeconomic backgrounds. enrollment flattened after years of growth, over time they gained some ground. BROADENING ACCESS “At the time I started on the board, financial aid was perhaps Currently, Ravenscroft has nearly $2.1 million in need-based five percent of the budget,” Chip Anderson recalled. “I saw that financial aid for students, which Mills said represents a percentage increase substantially while I was a trustee. Now “substantial increase” from the 2008-09 school year. That total it’s closer to ten percent, but it’s still a smaller amount than includes revenue from the Educational Endowment Fund, the is found at other independent schools, although some have Ravenscroft Opportunities Fund, and two funds endowed by the larger endowments.” James E. and Mary Z. She and her husband, Dmitri Stockton, have directed their donations to assist students of color. “I’ve been very involved with every school our daughters attended, so I’ve gotten real hands on, boots-on-the-ground experiences,” she noted. “Being on the board at Ravenscroft, dealing with policy and finances, gives me a broader perspective on the school. address by supporting financial aid.” “My husband and I have been very blessed, and we feel an obligation to give back,” she said. Chip and Judy Anderson share that sentiment. They created the Anderson Family Legacy Scholarship Fund earlier this year to support students in the Upper School who are the children or grandchildren of Ravenscroft alumni. Their decision to direct their gift to graduates’ progeny was prompted by the 2013 establishment of the

“We realized we were not going to prepare students to thrive in a ‘complex and interdependent world’ unless the world they were growing up with actually gave us, as a community, more experience with diversity,” she said. “You’ve got to be in a vibrant environment in order for kids to get to exercise leadership — which compels us to be more socioeconomically diverse, to be international in our complexity, to be racially diverse, diverse in all aspects. So, for me, it’s all mission-visionvalues connected.” Allain-Stockton said that her family’s experiences in Europe underscore that point. “Having our daughters grow up overseas in the richness of diversity really helped them develop empathy, a sense of global citizenship, and an appreciation for the differences of other cultures,” she said. “You don’t learn that in a homogeneous setting. It helps to see and work with people from different backgrounds and life experiences who can help us see things from a different perspective.”

Chip Anderson agreed, emphasizing the many experiences at Ravenscroft that expand students’ worlds. “The quality of students’ relationships with their teachers and the opportunities they enjoy at the school really open up so much for them,” he said. “Travel and other enrichment experiences with adults who are invested in their growth, working with teachers outside of the classroom, those things help them as they mature and get ready for the wider world.” Judy Anderson added, “Chip benefited tremendously from his time in the Lower School, and our children and grandchildren received a high-quality education in an environment that encouraged them to excel, participate, and be honest and caring citizens. I don’t think you can get that just anywhere.” The Andersons said they want their gifts to help Ravenscroft “become more diverse socioeconomically” so more children can enjoy those benefits. Enrollment numbers, Mills said, point to solid progress in the efforts to achieve that goal.

“ONE OTHER THING I’D HOPE WOULD COME FROM THE GROWTH OF FINANCIAL AID OPPORTUNITIES IS THAT THE RECIPIENTS RECOGNIZE THAT IT CAME FROM SOMEONE’S CHARITABLE INTENT, AND THEN THEY MAY CARRY THAT INTENT FORWARD THEMSELVES.” “In 2010-11, seventeen percent of our student body was diverse, defined by the National Association of Independent Schools as ethnic and international students, and this year we’re at twenty-six percent. In addition, sixteen percent of our students receive need-based financial aid,” she said. “We’re very proud to recognize the importance of diversity in our school population.” “I really hope that students at Ravenscroft can have as diverse an experience — in cultures, in ethnicities, in religions, in walks of life — as our daughters did in Europe,”

Allain-Stockton said. “It was such an eye-opening experience for them to learn from and appreciate meeting people from different backgrounds.” “One other thing I’d hope would come from the growth of financial aid opportunities is that the recipients recognize that it came from someone’s charitable intent, and then they may carry that intent forward themselves,” added Chip Anderson. Kelly concurred on both counts, adding, “Today, [we’re imagining] how we can change the world by providing more students with a pretty extraordinary education.” R

What is your Ravenscroft legacy?

L

IKE MOST PEOPLE, the highest priority in drafting our wills was to address first and foremost our own immediate family. Our next priority was to think about our extended family. To us, our extended family includes more than just relatives. It also includes those select few communities in our lives that are truly special and have really made a difference to our family. For us, Ravenscroft School is one such community — so close to our hearts that we feel it is part of our extended family. Our three sons grew up on this campus, but we also made life-long friendships as an alumnus, an employee, and as parents. That is why we thought it was important to include Ravenscroft in each of our wills. We hope that in some small way, we are helping future students enjoy the same incredible benefits that our sons had, just as many who came before us did for them. –MARY AND BILL (’74) MOSS P'03,'04,'07
