In Praise of Philanthropy Doreen Kelly, Head of School

DEAR RAVENSCROFT COMMUNITY: How easy it is to be grateful when life is going well. But when days are challenging, we must work a bit harder to find the good and even harder still to remember to praise and thank family, friends, and colleagues. I am immensely grateful to lead and serve Ravenscroft β€” especially on those challenging, hectic days. I thank God for all that is good and for the challenges that offer me an opportunity to grow. And each week I say thank you to our generous Ravenscroft donors through the personal notes I write. These notes to alumni, parents, grandparents, our faculty and staff members, and friends of the

School help to remind me of the appreciation so many of you feel for Ravenscroft. Writing them always brings my focus back to the mission of our School: nurturing the individual potential of our students and preparing them to thrive in a complex and interdependent world. I’m grateful for that clear understanding of who we are, what we are accomplishing, and all those who embrace the many possibilities at Ravenscroft. We are fortunate to have a community that understands the value and necessity of philanthropy. Our donors give freely of their time and their talent, and they provide funding for our School through tuition, the Annual Fund, endowments, special gifts, and estate planning. This year, and in the coming years, we are utilizing those philanthropic gifts to bring the gift of self-awareness to our students. Through our partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership, our teachers are working with our students daily to teach them to look inward, to clarify their intentions in school and in life, and to learn to lead themselves. We think this is the first step in empowering them to create the future they want to realize. In this issue of Ravenscroft magazine, we recognize our donors and volunteers from the past year and celebrate stories of generosity and innovations in philanthropy. On these pages you will also get to know

some people who are doing extraordinary things for the Ravenscroft community. The Washington and Crosby families share their desire to financially support the work of the parents’ diversity and inclusion committee. And Mike and Gail Kansler explain why they chose to make travel to China and Mandarin language instruction possible for students engaged with Ravenscroft’s International Education program. Philanthropy today is not always about one donor and one donation. An exciting trend is philanthropy groups and giving circles that share a passion and pool their resources to see their dreams realized. The B. Robert Williamson Jr. ’75 Alumni Scholarship Fund is one example at Ravenscroft of a group of donors coming together to create a legacy fund. I hope you enjoy this report on philanthropy at Ravenscroft and know that we truly appreciate all that you do to make Ravenscroft a wondrous place to learn, to lead, and to serve.

With gratitude,

Doreen C. Kelly Head of School

Supporting Our Legacy ONE HUNDRED FIFTY YEARS AGO, the idea for Ravenscroft emerged through the will of our original benefactor. Dr. Josiah Ogden Watson, a physician and prominent North Carolina statesman, directed, β€œFive Thousand Dollars out of my State Bonds β€” in trust, that they will invest the same in some safe stock and cause the Interest to be so applied forever as to fund and employ a teacher of a Parish school for Christ Church Raleigh.” Five thousand dollars may not sound like a lot of money Dr. Josiah Ogden Watson with which to start a school these days, but back in 1862 it would have been worth about $120,000! Dr. Watson was not an educator, but he was deeply interested in the education of Raleigh’s children. His gift enabled the establishment of a school that has, for over a century and a half, prepared students to thrive out in the world. During our sesquicentennial celebration, we celebrated our origins and marveled at how far we have come. Many people have contributed to our legacy of excellence, as teachers and coaches and Trustees and

administrators. But, as Dr. Watson showed, we would not be where we are today without the financial support of parents, alumni, faculty members, grandparents, alumni parents, and friends of the School. Each year, we are the beneficiaries of gifts in support of our ongoing programs including annual giving, capital giving (including facilities and endowment) and future programs (including planned and deferred gifts through the Josiah Ogden Watson Society). This year, over 1,000 donors made donations totaling $1,766,259 to Ravenscroft. Our Annual Fund reached an all-time high level of support with gifts totaling over $900,000. Participation from our parent and alumni communities was also strong at 65 percent and 10 percent, respectively. Like Dr. Watson, who stated in his will a wish to see his bequest establish an endowment whose interest would permanently β€œfund and employ a teacher,” a number of Ravenscroft friends and families established new endowment funds at the School in support of diversity and inclusion efforts, the Mandarin Chinese language and travel program, and financial aid for legacy students. We also received significant capital gifts to support Ravenscroft’s partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership, an athletics film-viewing room, and financial aid. These gifts made possible the

The first school building continuation of important existing programs and a room renovation that will benefit all student-athletes. Dr. Watson might not recognize the school he helped found as it exists today, but I firmly believe he would be pleased with our progress. Our students, our teachers, and our families and alumni maintain his deep interest in education and lifelong learning. Thank you for your continued support of Ravenscroft.

Regards,

Phillip C. Higginson Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement

Math Club Makes Guinness Book of World Records The Ravenscroft Middle School Math Club, coached by Melissa Spainhour, constructed a 9-ft-tall tetrix from 1,024 paper pyramids to earn the Guinness World Record certification. The tetrix was a threedimensional model of a Middle School Math Club members with their record-breaking tetrix Sierpinski Triangle Fractal, which was named after a Polish mathematician who described the pattern in 1915. The fractal is a repeating pattern in which each iteration is self-similar. Students worked on creating the structure for seven months, completed it in May, had it professionally measured, and submitted their effort to the Guinness World Record.

The team members were MARY GRADY BELL ’14, WILLIAM CHRISTMAN ’14, KEETON GLENN ’15, MAX HAENSEL ’14 (captain), RACHEL HIANIK ’14, JAY HIRL ’14, TIM HUTTER ’14, VANESSA MAY ’14, LIZZY MICYUS ’15, JUANITA PERDOMO ’14, EMERSON STORCH ’14, and JT TAYLOR ’14.

Ravens Complete Hood to Coast, Raise $50K for Cancer Over the August 24-25 weekend, 12 Ravenscroft students participated in the Hood to Coast relay race. This is a 198-mile relay race from Mt. Hood to the Oregon coast and is called the β€œMother of All Relays.” There were 1,002 relay teams that competed and approximately 12,000 runners in the race. The team, Ravens in the Hood, completed the course in 27 hours and 37 minutes and placed in the top quartile of all teams. They were the only all high school team to participate in the race. The race supports finding a cure for cancer, and the Ravens in the Hood team raised $50,964 for the American Cancer Society. They were the fourth highest fundraising team in the entire race.

CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

EMBRACING D

IVERSITY. MULTICULTURALISM. INCLUSION. Nearly every

independent school today converses in the positive language of difference. Schools are emphasizing and seeking out greater diversity among their student and faculty populations and putting into place programs and practices to ensure community members feel included. Ravenscroft’s partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership focuses on the importance of collaboration and calls for students to relate to one another with fairness and empathy. In line with these goals, this past year Tijuana and Ken Crosby and Adama and Dewayne Washington established the Crosby-Washington Diversity and Inclusion Fund to provide support for the School as it undertakes a variety of programs for students, parents, faculty, and staff that foster a greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. β€œWe saw in Ravenscroft early on a school that had tremendous tradition. We know that the landscape of society is changing, and we want Ravenscroft to stay a leader not just in the city of Raleigh, but in the entire state and nation,” Ravenscroft Trustee Dewayne

6

Ravenscroft magazine

Washington says. β€œThat requires an increased awareness of what’s happening outside the school. Diversity, and particularly inclusion, is at the forefront of every sector of life.” β€œThe school has really put a stake in the ground, if you will, with what it’s doing with the Center for Creative Leadership,” he adds. β€œThere’s an awareness that leaders are going to have to work effectively with people who are different than themselves. It’s a great step in trying to build leaders.” As parents of children in all three school divisions, the Crosby and Washington families envision their endowment fund supporting social events and guest speakers on campus; being used to send members of the Ravenscroft community to events like the Triangle Diversity Conference and the People of Color conference; and providing awards to honor faculty and staff who successfully incorporate diversity and inclusion into their work. The fund will begin distributing money during the 2013-2014 school year. β€œWe not only want this for our children, but for the entire Ravenscroft community,” Tijuana Crosby says. β€œWe wanted to create a space where people would feel comfortable talking about dif-

DIFFERENCE ent experiences with people. We don’t want to exclude anyone.” The Crosbys and Washingtons define diversity broadly to include age, culture, disabilities, ethnicity, family structure, gender, learning styles, medical conditions, nationality, physical attributes, race, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and more. They emphasize that everyone should feel welcome, accepted, and included. β€œWhen people hear diversity, they think of color. It’s about much more than that,” Adama Washington says. β€œWe want to bring together a lot of different people at Ravenscroft, and once they get here, we want to make sure they all feel like they are part of the community.” Ken Crosby believes all Ravenscroft students will be successful and notes that a focus on diversity and community will further contribute to that success. β€œIt’s about exposing kids to things they wouldn’t be exposed to otherwise, different cultures and backgrounds,” Ken Crosby says. β€œIt helps to erase stereotypes and allow everyone to get along properly. The world is changing. There are a lot of diverse

people in the world. It helps to have knowledge and background about different cultures and practices.” Just as diversity and inclusion programming will benefit students beyond their time at Ravenscroft, the Crosbys and Washingtons recognize Tijuana Crosby and Adama Washington the long-term value of their decision to invest in a shared passion. β€œWe wanted this to be forever standing at Ravenscroft,” Adama Washington says. β€œWe know that after our students graduate, this will still be here.”R

Kansler Family Ensures Growth

of MANDARIN PROGRAM

a

S A FEMALE BORN IN CHINA in the late 90s and placed

for adoption, her world was chaotic, her future uncertain. And then, at 15-months-old, the young girl’s world changed dramatically. In North Carolina, Mike and Gail Kansler were eager to provide certainty for this baby. The long flight from China to North Carolina marked the beginning of a new family and life in America for Alexandra Kansler. Today, Alex, as she prefers to be called, is a ninth-grade student at Ravenscroft. She is proud of her Chinese heritage, intrigued by the culture, and happy to be a Chinese-American teenager. β€œMy husband and I felt compelled to adopt from China and feel that it is important for Alexandra to embrace Chinese language and culture,” Gail Kansler said. β€œWhen Alexandra was very young, we enrolled her in an exploratory Mandarin class, but she did not enjoy it.” That set-back, although no one knew it at the time, would lead to success for Alex and to the promise of success for many students to come. Mike and Gail believed so strongly in the Mandarin program that they started a fund to endow a portion of the program, ensuring that Mandarin would remain a foreign language choice for all students. The Mandarin Fund supports the Mandarin language program at Ravenscroft including trip expenses for students traveling to China, professional development for faculty, and curriculum enhancements. β€œGail and Mike saw the importance of the Mandarin language program to their daughter and to other students at Ravenscroft and wanted to ensure its longevity. Their gift created the fund, and they were pleased to know that they can continue to support it through the Annual Fund,” said Phil Higginson, Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement. β€œThey have also made it possible for other

members of our community who are interested in specifically supporting this program to do so by giving directly to the Mandarin Fund.” β€œWhen Ravenscroft began its Mandarin program, Alexandra was older and more interested and really enjoyed learning from Mr. Kuo,” continued Kansler. β€œLearning Mandarin was fun because of Mr. Kuo’s approach,” said Alex. β€œI have taken Mandarin classes since sixth grade, been tutored one summer, and now I’m taking an honors class. I have to decide now if I’m interested in studying in China or in an immersion program offered in Vermont,” she said.

β€œWhen we saw how Alexandra enjoyed her classes, and how much she was learning so quickly, we wanted to help fund this valuable opportunity for students. Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world, and speaking it offers students a great advantage in our global world,” said Mike. At this advanced level, learning to speak, write, and read Mandarin requires commitment and much practice. Alex acknowledges that this part is not always fun. β€œI am studying more grammar and learning the strict pronunciation, and it’s hard. But, I’m on the varsity tennis team so I understand that, like athletics, sometimes you just have to do the work,” said Alex. Alex does the work well. Last May she received an award for outstanding performance in Mandarin. Alex is only one of about 100 students enrolled in Ravenscroft’s Mandarin language program, which was established in 2009 with a very small group of students. The School has nurtured the development of the program, understanding the merit of this offering as part of the International Education curriculum. R R eport on Giving 2013

donations into funds large enough to realize great visions. It’s not a new way of raising money, though. In fact, it dates back at least to 1885 when Joseph Pulitzer asked his newspaper’s readers to pitch in to finance the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. Groups of investors join giving circles and contribute amounts as small as $10 or $20 into an agreed upon fund. As the fund grows, investors donate the profits to education, arts and culture, health, and charities that help youth, women, and minority groups. The Internet has added a whole new dimension to group philanthropy. Crowd fundraising sites abound, helping those with similar passions find each other and change the world β€” a few dollars at a time. For example, Catapult is a crowdfunding site focused on issues related to girls and women. Crowdrise is a global philanthropy site which incorporates social networking and contests, like marathons and walks, into its fundraising. The Crowdrise website reads, β€œThe power of the crowd is real, lots of small donations really do add up, and the Crowdrise community can have a monumental impact on causes around the world.” Locally, the N.C. Museum of History is using a crowdfunding site to seek donations to pay for an upcoming exhibit. Through Indiegogo.com, the museum hopes to raise $25,000. Another example β€” right here at Ravenscroft β€” is a group of passionate donors who have contributed varying amounts to create the B. Robert Williamson Jr. ’75 Alumni Scholarship Fund. The fund was established in 2013 in memory of alumnus Robert Williamson ’75. It provides financial aid to children or grandchildren of alumni who are accepted to Ravenscroft and who require financial assistance to attend. β€œRobert Williamson had the kind of personality and spirit that drew people to him. When Robert was attending Ravenscroft, he was the kind of well-rounded student that made the Ravenscroft community better. Our community gets stronger as our legacies grow deeper. To help grow that tradition by donating to a fund in Robert’s name is an honor for Jenny and me and the Winston family,” said Charles Winston Jr, chairman of the board. β€œLosing a loved one sometimes prompts friends and family to find a way to ensure that person’s memory lives on in a meaningful way. Forming an endowment that focuses on something of meaning to the person can be one way to honor and remember them. With the Williamson Scholarship Fund, that is just what happened,” says Phil Higginson, Assistant Head of School for Institutional Advancement. β€œAs a scholarship fund established to help with tuition assistance for the children and grandchildren of alumni, Robert’s legacy as an alumnus will live on through the support of students today and into the future.”R Report on Giving 2013
