What is CAT Technology? CAT: Computer Aided Translation CAT technology offers the concept of translation memory and
termbase Translation memory: a database consisting of translation units Translation unit: source and translated sentence During translation, the technology searches for exact or similar matches to the current source sentence for translation Matches found can be reused or edited
Termbase: multilingual database Term entries: terms, synonyms, acronyms, etc. Additional data: definition, part of speech, gender, etc.
Translators work with a translation memory and termbase to reuse previous translations and ensure consistency of terminology

What is a translation memory?
A translation memory (TM) is a growing database that constantly learns from the translator It captures your translations as you work for future reuse The same sentence never needs to be translated twice saving time and money! Not to be confused with machine translation!
How does a translation memory work?
A source sentence is previously translated and stored with the target sentence (TU) in the translation memory When the source sentence re-occurs, the translation memory remembers the translation and inserts it into the new source document The translator may accept the suggested translation, or edit it with an alternative (this would also be stored for future use)
