ome to Kartchner Caverns State Park and featuring picturesque river-valley views coupled with pleasant weather, the City of Benson offers both adventure and beauty. Benson is ideally situated along Interstate 10 as the Gateway to Cochise County. Founded in 1880, prior to Arizona’s mining boom, Benson was developed as a stopping point for the Butterfield Overland Stage mail delivery route. Soon thereafter, the Southern Pacific Railroad came into Benson, and continued to serve the area until 1997, when the line was purchased by Union Pacific Railroad. The Old West is ingrained in the culture of Benson and its traditional railroad heritage. The Benson Visitor Center – Train Depot, located at 249 E. 4th St., in the heart of Benson’s historic downtown, is a beautiful replica railroad depot
incorporating many of the same architectural features as the original depot that was built over a century ago. The Visitor Center has a new diesel /electric train simulator that operates a G-Scale model train, running on 96 feet of track around the inside perimeter of the Visitor Center. We encourage our visitors to operate our train, and will even provide all of our visitors a free Benson Train Operators Certificate. The City of Benson is particularly proud of its designation as the Home of Kartchner Caverns State Park. Located on 550 acres at the foothills of the Whetstone Mountains, just south of Benson on State Highway 90, Kartchner Caverns State Park offers picnicking, camping, hiking, walking and magnificent still-living caverns to tour. Benson also has over 1,100 RV spaces for guests staying to explore or just stopping by for a quick visit.

Douglas

he Douglas area was first settled by the Spanish in the 18th century. The U.S. Army established Camp San Bernardino in the latter half of the 19th century, and Camp Douglas was later built in 1910. Douglas was officially incorporated in 1905, and is named after mining pioneer Dr. James Douglas. Douglas also received notoriety for being threatened with attack by Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa in 1916. Ten years later, missing evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson was found collapsed after being kidnapped and convalesced at Douglas’ Calumet Hospital. Her story of kidnap, torture and escape brought reporters and tourists from around the country

he historic city of Willcox was founded in 1880 as a whistle-stop along the Southern Pacific Railroad’s southernmost rail line. The Willcox Town Hall is housed at the site of the original Southern Pacific Railroad station. Originally home to Chiricahua Apache Chiefs Cochise and Geronimo, Willcox was named in honor of a visit by General Orlando B. Willcox in 1889. Willcox developed into a national leader in cattle production during the early 20th century. Many of the Old West legends happened in Willcox. The Willcox area has kept its ranching past, but has become a legendary oasis in the Sonoran Desert. Willcox is the gateway to the Chiricahua National Monument, with its stunning rhyolite formations that you can hike. Come visit these “sky islands” to have a legendary outdoor adventure. By hiking, horseback, or mountain bike, be sure to go up to Cochise Stronghold,
a rugged natural fortress that juts up out of the valley, allowing one to see for miles. Willcox is home to more species of birds than anywhere else in North America, with 35,000 sandhill cranes in the winter. Wings Over Willcox Birding and Nature Festival is the perfect opportunity to see all the winter migrants that visit the area and to view the other wildlife and natural wonders of southeastern Arizona. Outside of Willcox on the eastern side of the mountains is one of the most scenic places in America—Cave Creek Canyon. When you enter the canyon, it is like stepping back in time, with awe-inspiring vistas. Wellknown for the quantity and variety of wildlife, Cave Creek Canyon is the place to study the outdoors in its pristine environment. Home of the Southwest Research Station, Willcox offers the opportunity to see animals, such as the elegant trogon, that you can’t find

anywhere else. Former boxing champion Chalky Wright, a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, was also born in Willcox. Today, agriculture remains a vital part of Willcox’s economy. Willcox is home to Arizona’s burgeoning wine industry. The Willcox wine region produces 74 percent of the wine grapes grown in the state of Arizona. Grape varietals grown include Petit Sirah, Cabernet
Franc, Sangiovese, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. Willcox’s Flying Leap Tasting Room (then the Headquarters Saloon) was the site of Warren Earp’s death. In fact, Earp is buried at the historic Willcox Pioneer Cemetery. Just north of Willcox, there are now miles of apple and pistachio orchards, tomato greenhouses, and more.

Wings Over Willcox Held annually over the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Arizona’s Mecca for wintering sandhill cranes, raptors and other birds, Willcox is the wintering home for more than 30,000 sandhill cranes. The Sulpher Springs Valley has been nicknamed “Hawk Alley” or “Raptor Alley,” because there are so many different species of hawks. Wings Over Willcox is the perfect opportunity to see these birds and more amazing animals as well as connect with the magnificent natural world around us. Willcox West Fest: Chuck Wagon Cook-off and Ranch Rodeo Always the last weekend in April. Want to experience the real West and see real cowboys? Willcox celebrates its Western heritage, past and present, with the Willcox West Fest. Willcox is the Cattle Capital of America and a place where the West is still the West and cowboys are real. Events include story-tellin’ around a campfire with some good ol’ western music. Also, learn to rope, help a blacksmith and watch real cowboys at the Ranch Rodeo as they compete in real ranchwork events, then finish off with a steak dinner and dancing. Willcox Wine Country Spring Festival The third weekend in May. Willcox Wine Country Spring Festival is one of the top 10 wine festivals in the United States. The Willcox area grows more than three-fourths of Arizona’s wine grapes. Willcox is an official American Viticulture Area. The Wine Festival gets you right into the center of Arizona’s wine-growing region. The Festival features great entertainment, food and, of course, wine.
Willcox Flyer Bike Ride The Saturday before Labor Day. If you like to see the wide open spaces, then this family-friendly bike ride is for you. The Willcox Flyer Bike Ride is actually three rides. Ride one is only a few miles; ride two is 33 to the historic town of Dos Cabezas, and ride three is the whole 66 miles out to the Chiricahua National Monument and back. There are lots of vendors and other fun things happening in Railroad Park every Saturday before Labor Day. Rex Allen Days Wild West Weekend The first weekend in October. Rex Allen Days was originally started in the 1950s to honor the “Arizona Cowboy” Rex Allen who was the last of the Singing Cowboys. The event that honors his legacy is a Wild West extravaganza, beginning with an induction dinner for the Willcox Cowboy Hall of Fame, where working cowboys are honored, a parade, carnival and Grand Canyon Association Rodeo. There is so much to see and do. Come and have some Wild West fun, and take a look at the festival that honors Arizona’s Cowboy.

iticulture in Arizona began during the 16th century when Spanish Jesuit missionaries began to produce wine for use in the Holy Sacrament. Today, there are now over 110 wineries, vineyards and cellars throughout Arizona. The Arizona wine business is booming and boasts successful varietals from the Southern Rhone region (such as Syrah and Grenache) and Italy (including Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio). Willcox Wine Country is a consortium of Arizona farm wineries located in the Willcox area. The consortium consists of ten wineries and tasting rooms. This area grows 74 percent of Arizona’s wine grapes and is the source of the most highlyrated Arizona wines by Wine Spectator – 45 wines rated “8890” over the past five years.
