A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
A
s Mayor of the City of Coolidge it is my pleasure to welcome you to our City and home of the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. As you take time to visit the friendly staff at the Coolidge Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center you will learn more about our culturally diverse and growing community here in the heart of Pinal County and one of Arizona’s largest commerce centers that we call the “Sun Corridor”. A number of major accomplishments have been realized over the last year including the recent groundbreaking for Nikola Motor Company’s manufacturing facility located in the Arizona Inland Port Industrial Park. This nearly one billion dollar plant will eventually employee over 1,800 workers to assemble history making zero emission battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell semi-trucks. Up to 35,000 trucks will be produced per year out of the facility at full buildout over the next five years. New home builders have entered the Coolidge market providing a wide selection of models and pricing. Century Complete, Express by DR Horton, KB Homes, Richmond American are building all around
the community lifting the total new single family home permits to over 350 for the year so far. A 398 unit apartment project is currently under construction and more units are being planned ranging from duplexes to higher density apartments. Please visit our local eateries and business services while you enjoy your time in Coolidge. Stop in at the internationally famous United Dance Studio, home to the “Exiles” featured on televisions World of Dance. Another recent business addition to the City is Robles Boxing Club providing yet another great activity for both young and old. The amenities and benefits you can find living in, or visiting, Coolidge are numerous. We are one of the only communities in Pinal County offering a local and regional public transit system. Our historic Airport is an aviation lover’s dream offering beautiful year round flying conditions through Arizona’s gorgeous sunny blue sky. The Airport features one of the few places trained aerobatic pilots can come to perfect their flying skills. International skydivers train year around at this very popular airport under the direction of Complete Parachute Solutions.
If you are considering opening a business in our community we will help you through our very friendly Development Services department. Our professional team has facilitated numerous businesses with plan review and permitting. The City has developed a reputation for being facilitative and we understand how important it is to expedite construction so that your business can receive revenue and be profitable. Enjoy your visit to Coolidge and see for yourself the great opportunities that are afforded here. I look forward to meeting with you if you want to stop in and say hello and will be happy discuss your thoughts and ideas on how we can continue to make Coolidge, Arizona an even better place to live, work and play. Mayor Jon Thompson.

COOLIDGE POLICE DEPARTMENT
O
n behalf of the Coolidge Police Department, welcome to our city! The men and women of the police department are committed to working in partnership with our citizens and businesses to improve the quality of life in Coolidge. We are dedicated to solving community problems, the reduction of crime, the protection of life and property, and upholding state laws, municipal codes and the constitutional rights of all persons. To support this mission the police department holds our GAIN (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) Night at the Kenilworth Sports Complex in October each year. GAIN is an annual gathering of law enforcement and the community, designed to promote partnerships between citizens and local police, as well as bring awareness to many community service resources available to them, while focusing on the theme of crime prevention. A variety of community partners are present each year, including the Coolidge Fire Department, Coolidge Parks & Recreation, Pinal County Attorney’s Office,
Pinal Hispanic Council, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, United States Border Patrol, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and many other regional law enforcement, public service organizations and businesses. The public enjoys complimentary hot dogs, bounce houses for the children, and many other giveaways from the vendors. The night culminates in free raffles for prizes and gifts for children and adults, donated from local businesses. GAIN is a great community event for kids to come and play, people to socialize and get to know their law enforcement partners as well as learn about the many resources available to them in Coolidge and Pinal County. COOLIDGE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
C
oolidge is transforming its agricultural based industry into a clean energy and technology powerhouse. Tractors lining the cotton fields in the past have been replaced with renewable energy sources like solar panels stretching for miles. The story of Coolidge has changed over the years but the commitment to the community and jobs remain rock solid. The City’s pro business approach to new opportunities remains constant. As testimony to this devotion, Nikola Corporation is making a nearly $1 Billion commitment to Coolidge. The company is constructing a state of the art plant to produce clean energy, hydrogen and battery powered vehicles. Coolidge residents, officials and Council members realize the importance of brining high quality companies and jobs to the City and remain united to build on that goal.
Rick Miller City Manager
In addition to Nikola, many other companies have recently upgraded and expanded operations here. Stinger Bridge & Iron, Bright International, Heritage Environmental along with solar giants like S-Power and NextEra have made large commitments to Coolidge.
Our successes have not gone unnoticed by the rest of the world as well. With Nikola’s announcement and subsequent construction, companies from around the globe have reached out to City Hall. Coolidge lies in the middle of the Sun Corridor where Interstate 8 & 10 connect, making it an ideal location to move goods across the US and to seaports out west serving the globe. This goes hand in hand to Coolidge’s goal of expanding its reach beyond Arizona where business activities can have a true world touch. The Sun Corridor really exemplifies excellent transport means while helping businesses discover the beauty and opportunity of the Sonoran desert. Coolidge really does go the extra mile. The City’s streamlined approach to permitting, assembling a team of decision makers quickly and swift turnaround of call/emails separates Coolidge from other potential locations. Perhaps it’s best put in words by Nikola’s Head of Global Manufacturing, Mark Duchesne. “I’ve never worked with a group like this group here to be this supportive.”

COOLIDGE HIGH SCHOOL
he City is also home to Pinal County’s largest college, Central Arizona College. This two-year educational institution prepares both recent high school graduates as well as those who are looking for a career transition. Their highly focused programs not only help those who wish to further their learning at a 4 year college but also prepare students for the local economy. Programs like heavy equipment operation, welding and medical assisting allow students to readily find a career in their field. In addition to traditional programs, CAC is working with various local industries like Lucid Motors to design a state of the art program. The program works specifically with industries to accommodate their needs to find skilled workers. This prepares students to start work immediately upon graduation. It’s these future thinking education institutions and industry leaders helping to make Pinal County and Coolidge an attractive community to call home. In addition to Central Arizona College, the Central Arizona Valley Institute of Technology (CAVIT)
has a host of vocational training programs. Career technology education prepares students to enter the workforce immediately after graduation or to pursue further education at a community college or university. Some of the programs at the CAVIT campus include fire science, law enforcement, medical and nursing. CAVIT’s nursing program has been so successful that the department has expanded into a new building allowing more students to enter the program. Excellent education at the elementary to the high school level is also something the community takes seriously. The Coolidge Unified School District operates several schools in the area. In addition, Imagine Schools, a charter school system has planted roots in Coolidge starting with an elementary school in 2007. With its rapid popularity, Imagine has grown into a full K-12 campus in 2011, adding a preparatory building for middle and high school. This commitment by the area residents in quality education symbolizes Coolidge’s goal of training our future leaders of tomorrow.

ACHIEVE PINAL
A Project of Pinal Alliance for Economic Growth
A
chieve Pinal is a regional grassroots effort dedicated to working with education, government, business and other community partners to develop a competitive workforce for future jobs by improving educational attainment in Pinal County. Achieve Pinal is working to achieve the primary goal of Achieve60AZ, which is: Ensuring that 60 percent of Arizonans have a certificate or college degree by the year 2030. All actions implemented by Achieve Pinal will support four key strategies that have been identified to support the achievement of this critical goal. Achieve Pinal has launched two critical initiatives to improve educational attainment in Pinal County. The AARP Experience Corps Pinal-Casa Grande was launched in November 2020. Being able to read by the end of third grade is the crucial milestone in a child’s future success. Students who are unable to read at the end of the third grade are four times more likely to leave school without a diploma. Only 37% of third graders in Pinal County are reading at grade level, which is approximately half of the statewide goal. AARP Experience Corps Pinal-Casa Grande is the newest affiliate of the AARP Experience Corps program. There are 22 other Experience Corps affiliates nationwide, and their effectiveness is demonstrated by multiple university studies. The program utilizes volunteers, aged 50+, to work with children one-on-one to improve their reading.
Expo is a free app, accessible to all, offering a career exploration experience with professionals in a variety of careers. Career fields have been identified in partnership with ARIZONA@WORK. New and diverse job opportunities continue to come to Pinal County. Employers like Lucid Motors, Abbott, Resolution Copper and Nikola are seeking employees with a variety of skills, experience and education. Abbott and Resolution Copper sponsored the app’s development. The labor analytics firm, Emsi, that ranks counties by various economic development factors, announced the results of their recent study in January 2021. The study evaluated counties in terms of migration, overall job growth, skilled-job growth, educational attainment, regional competitiveness and annual job openings per capita. The study analyzed 601 counties throughout the United States including nine of Arizona’s 15 counties. Pinal County was the secondhighest ranked county in Arizona and 29th in the nation. The Emsi report also stated that small and medium sized markets are becoming more attractive to workers rather than living in a larger, metropolitan area. The Career Expo app will aid students, workers and employers to access information about the exciting job opportunities in Pinal County. The county’s job growth and job openings are amongst the best in the state and nation. Jobs are changing rapidly. This is a period of unprecedented change and the pace
is accelerating. Technology is impacting work more and more every day. Many jobs will require education beyond high school. Currently in Arizona, only 45 percent of adults have education beyond a high school diploma. Pinal County is at 36 percent. In order for Arizona to be competitive, increasing the number of individuals who are equipped with a high value professional certificate or degree, is an area of needed improvement. “The students in Pinal County are the future of our community, and we want to do whatever we can to make sure they have access to an innovative experience that builds career exploration, connects students to employers, and improves post-secondary attainment,” said Bryan Seppala, Resolution Copper Economic and Workforce Development. To access the free app, visit your mobile device app store to download CrowdCompass Events. Then search for Achieve Pinal’s Virtual Career Expo. The app can also be accessed via any browser at: https://event.crowdcompass.com/ virtualcareerexpo To volunteer, to donate or for more information about Achieve Pinal, visit Achievepinal.org or call Pinal Alliance at 520-836-6868. Pinal Alliance for Economic Growth is a private nonprofit economic development organization serving the interests of large and small businesses as well as local jurisdiction of Pinal County.
Tutoring began in November 2020 and the program has recruited a full complement of volunteer tutors. These tutors will work with over 100 students in three Casa Grande elementary schools. After a two-year pilot, the goal is to make the program available to other school districts in Pinal County. Up to this time, Experience Corps programs have been offered in large to medium sized cities. We are the first rural community, and we want our program to be a model for smaller communities nationwide. The second critical initiative launched in February 2021 is Career Expo. Arizona Career Readiness Credential (ACRC): The ACRC is a major initiative set forth by Governor Ducey in partnership with ARIZONA@WORK and the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) that makes the Arizona Career Readiness Credential available to job seekers across the state. This tool prepares job seekers for success by demonstrating their command of seven skill areas that are relevant to every occupation, industry and career pathway across the state. Existing research was coupled with input from hundreds of employers who participated in industry summits and strategy labs to identify three foundational academic skills and four personal and interpersonal
skills that form the framework of the Arizona Career Readiness Credential: • Applied Mathematics • Reading for Information • Workplace Data and Graphics • Communicating Effectively • Teamwork and Collaboration • Professionalism • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
There are four steps to earning the credential: 1. The initial skills review – an unproctored “snapshot” of current skill levels indicates the job seeker’s readiness for the battery of highstakes assessments. 2. Career Readiness Courseware (CRC) is directly aligned to the three applied academic assessments and helps job seekers prepare for them. It is a self-directed online system with instructional content, formative assessments, learning aids and summative assessments at each level. Job seekers must successfully complete one level before moving on to the next. 3. Employability Skills Courseware helps learners develop and demonstrate attitudes and behaviors that are critical to success at work. This curriculum is suitable for use in either a selfdirected experience or as a series of workshops. It is a critical component of a comprehensive approach to preparing students for success and providing future employers with workplace-ready candidates. 4. The proctored assessments – Successful completion of all the assessments in a controlled, highstakes environment results in the Arizona Career Readiness Credential. T
he U. S. Department of the Army originally constructed the Coolidge Municipal Airport designed as a singleengine aircraft flight training school in the early 1940’s. The airport was originally named the Coolidge Army Airfield and the facility initially did function (instead of the school) as an air transport command base, serving as an auxiliary operating base for Williams Field (now known as Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport) during World War II. Coolidge AAF was declared surplus by the Secretary of War in November 1945 and subsequently transferred to Pinal County by quitclaim deed in January 1950. The site was later transferred to the City of Coolidge by quitclaim deed in March 1959. From 1962 until 1992 the airport was operated mainly by military leases. In 1992 the site was converted to civilian use after the military no longer needed to conduct further operations there. Today the airport is operated by the City of Coolidge and is home to multiple aviation related businesses. In May
2019, Coolidge was very fortunate to receive a $9.5 million award from the Federal Aviation Administration. The grant completely restored the airport’s runways 5-23 to likenew condition as well as provide new lighting. The historic wooden military hanger at the Coolidge Municipal Airport still remains and has been seen in several television commercials and movies. The original three runways were built in a triangle and two remain in use today. The airport covers 1,268 acres and is located 5 miles southeast of Coolidge. Each year from October until April, the airport hosts a fly-in on the first Saturday of the month, with a buffet style pancake breakfast served by the Coolidge Lions Club. Pilots from all over the country fly in to show off their planes, with a wide array of aircrafts from vintage and unique flyers to modern day jets and sometimes, experimental flying exhibits on display! It is a huge crowd pleaser and money raised from this event helps various programs in Coolidge including the youth and elderly. Come out and see for yourself and have breakfast with us! 2021-2022
GLOBAL ATTENTION TO AREA
L
ocated in the heart of the Arizona Innovation and Technology Corridor, Coolidge is fast becoming a destination for some of the world’s largest and most innovative companies. A business-friendly climate, low operating costs, numerous incentives, and thousands of acres of shovel-ready developable land are just a few of the reasons these businesses are choosing Coolidge. These businesses range from renewable energy and advanced manufacturing to heritage industries like agriculture. By virtue of being located between Arizona’s two largest cities, Coolidge and central Pinal County benefit from the robust transportation and utility infrastructure that connects Phoenix and Tucson. Three international airports are within a short drive meaning that all major U.S. cities

and many international destinations are a direct flight away. Interstates 8 and 10 along with Union Pacific Railroad link the region with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as the remainder of the U.S. allowing for efficient movement of raw and finished products. An abundance of oversized transmission lines for the natural gas, electrical and fiberoptic providers also give Coolidge an advantage when it comes to serving loads of all size. The advantages that Coolidge has to offer have culminated in announcement that several major employers are setting up shop right here. In 2020 Nextera Energy (NYSE: NEE), the world’s largest producer of solar and wind energy, completed it’s 100 megawatt project that provides power to some of Arizona largest companies and the nearby S-Power 100 megawatt facility is now producing power for Intel’s multi-billion dollar Fab 42 mega-factory. Nikola Motor Company (NASDAQ: NKLA), a manufacturer of hybrid electric-hydrogen trucks, also celebrated a major milestone in 2020 when it began construction of its state-of-the-art advanced
manufacturing facility. This campus will ultimately encompass more than one million square feet and employs thousands at wages about the county average. In addition to new companies locating here, Coolidge also has a number of existing companies and industries making a mark on the global economy. For years Bright International Corporation’s expert research and development team has been producing innovative health and beauty products for some of the biggest names in the industry at their Coolidge Facility. Many may not know that agricultural products grown in an around Coolidge are exported all around the world. These products include high quality cotton for the textile industry and feed products for many overseas countries. With Pinal County predicted to remain one of the fastest growing counties for years to come, Coolidge is poised to continue attracting world class companies across many industries that will create thousands of job opportunities for the current and future citizens.

COOLIDGE HISTORY
FOUNDING OF COOLIDGE, ARIZONA The discussion of the name of the town came up. After several names had been mentioned, Jonesville and Jonesburg, etc., my husband suggested the name “Coolidge” in commemoration of the President whose signature made possible the Coolidge Dam.
T
he Southern Pacific Company built their new main line railroad thru that was destined to be the town of Coolidge in 1924. The building of this railroad and the assurance from congress by the Congressional Act of June 7, 1924, authorizing the construction of a storage dam, known as the Coolidge Dam, across the Gila River at San Carlos, which would place 100,000 acres of land in the valley 110 miles below to the west under irrigation, were the two main reasons that prompted my husband, Mr. R.J. Jones, in May and June, 1925, to plat out eighty acres of land into a townsite, the Original Townsite of Coolidge, which he founded and named “Coolidge” in honor of the President whose signature made possible the numerous natural conditions that were very vital that entered in, such as fertile soil, climate, localization, etc., that gave
an ideal agricultural background. We realized with these conditions that this spot so certainly located in the valley coming into its own naturally must have a town commensurate with its development, hence the founding of Coolidge in May, 1925. It was on a Sunday in the early part of 1925, while my husband and I were sitting with Mr. and Mrs. Clement O. Seagoe in their home on their ranch just south from the Townsite we were contemplating surveying, when the discussion of the name of the town came up. After several names had been mentioned, Jonesville and Jonesburg, etc., my husband suggested the name “Coolidge” in commemoration of the President whose signature made possible the Coolidge Dam. This name being agreeable to all, the new prospective town was so named. The Coolidge Dam was dedicated by Hon. Calvin Coolidge, ex-president, March 4, 1930. The whole state of Arizona joined in on this celebration. Mr. R.J. Jones from our vicinity was appointed by the Governor to be on the reception committee. The bountiful feast and inspiring ceremonies were held on the highway crossing over the Coolidge Dam. At the completion of the new main railroad of the Southern Pacific thru Phoenix and on by the way of Yuma to Los Angeles in 1925, a big Main Line Railroad celebration was held in Phoenix, October 15, 1926. A parade, dance and all that goes with a celebration of that kind were held. Coolidge entered the celebration by placing four floats in the parade and joining in on the street carnival that evening. Coolidge had a queen, Elsie Wofford, who sat on a high seat above the top of one of the floats while on a seat lower down on each side of the “Coolidge Queen” sat two other Coolidge Belles. It put Coolidge on the

map. Everyone began to inquire about this new town of Coolidge. Mr. Jones followed this up with a lot of Coolidge advertising thru the Phoenix papers. There were no paved highways at that time passing thru or even near Coolidge. There was, however, a dirt highway leading from Casa Grande to Florence that passed thru Coolidge. The ruts were quite deep and the dust so thick at times that to travel over it in an automobile was like riding a bucking bronco, bareback, over a freshly picked field. There were two ways we had at that time of reaching the proposed townsite from Phoenix, one by the way of the Sacaton Indian Reservation and the other by the way of Florence. We chose the Sacaton route when the Gila River was passable as it was twenty miles nearer. At that time there was no bridge across the Gila River near Sacaton as we find today, so we had to cross over on the Gila River bed. Of course, that was prohibitive during a rain or just after a rain, as the river usually had quite a lot of water at that time. At other times it was like Arizona’s dry rivers, dry on the surface with perhaps an undercurrent of water beneath the sand. After leaving Sacaton we had to travel over eighteen miles of winding road thru flora covered desert. There were several of these trails, we never knew which was which, but we did know that no matter how winding or in what direction we were going at times we would finally wind up at the Casa Grande Monument, which is only one mile from Coolidge. We had several obstacles to overcome in the development of Coolidge and at times things looked very blue, but as a whole each step in our growth has been natural and in pace with progress that it reminds one of climbing a ladder— using caution with each step we find ourselves going ahead. There was no boom or undue excitement—just natural conditions, such as fertile soil, location, 2021-2022
climate and water which assured productivity, together with the ingenuity of persuading the state of the necessity of running the state highway through our town, the granting to us of a depot by the Southern Pacific Company, the coming in of churches, schools, civic improvements and founding of Coolidge. These assurances, one by one as time went along, always brought new people and new businesses which have given our town a firm foundation upon which to keep forging ahead.
The founding of the town arouses and gives vent to that pioneering spirit— it gives one unlimited expression in various ways of development. It is a most interesting and a most inspiring sight to witness the transformation of a desert into a garden spot and at the same time have the pleasure of going along hand in hand planning and building and watching spring up out of its very midst and growing into a thriving little city containing all modern conveniences within the short period of 10 years.
The years 1929-30 were epochal years as they were marked by distinctive developments, such as the dedication of the Coolidge Dam, opening of Hwy. 87, printing of the first newspaper, opening of a bank, the forming of many organizations, the clearing for productivity of many acres of virgin soil, etc.
The Original Townsite of Coolidge was followed by the Seagoe, Baugn, North Coolidge, Jones, Jackson, Stoeger and Allen Additions. There are at present 320 acres platted out into city lots.

The Pinal Geology & Mineral Museum
A
rizona has a unique and fantastic geologic history. The remnants of that history are the rock, gem, and mineral deposits all over the state. It’s not just silver and gold, and many people have no idea of the richness that lies just beneath their feet. To bring that geologic history and the geologic story of Arizona to life, the Pinal Geology & Mineral Museum opened its doors in 2016. Created and maintained by the Pinal Gem & Mineral Society, the Museum tells the story of the earth with a focus on Pinal County, Arizona. Our permanent exhibits include a collection of Arizona Minerals, and Pinal County geologic history. They are complimented by changing exhibits on a variety of earth science subjects including paleontology, and minerals of the world. New exhibits large and small are constantly in development.
Our website is also very active. We are active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Please visit our website for links, or search for Pinal Geology Museum on those platforms.
The main drive of the Museum is education, and many people have generously provided material from their personal collections so visitors can view the gifts of the earth, showing not only the beauty of the natural world, but excite young and old to pursue further learning, a hobby, or a career in the earth sciences.
Cullen’s Rock and Mineral Dig Kids can dig around here and perhaps find an interesting rock or mineral specimen to take home. Located just outside the museum, this fun activity was established in memory of Cullen Connolly, the first junior member of the Pinal Gem and Mineral Society.
Admission is free. For more information visit: www.pinalgeologymuseum.org, or call the Coolidge Chamber of Commerce at (520)723-3009
Something for Everyone The Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum has something for everyone. Whether you are a casual rockhound, or a seasoned veteran in earth science knowledge, the Museum will have something to grab your attention. • Dinosaurs • A Treasure Hunt to guide kids and adults around the museum • Fossils, rocks, and minerals from around the world • Small group and school tours • Virtual and in-class/group visits • Gift shop (a limited selection is also available in the Chamber of Commerce office) • Monthly talks on geologic subjects Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum 351 North Arizona Blvd Coolidge, AZ 85128 2021-2022
Children’s Activities Dinosaurs
We have dinosaurs. Two life-like young Jurassic dinosaurs have joined the museum. Our Dilophosaurus, a species first found in Arizona is joined by an Allosausurus in our diorama. Just outside the Museum we also have a flying Pterodactyl. These flying reptiles lived in Arizona in the Cretaceous. At least two of them don’t bite. They’re all perfect for pictures!

COOLIDGE HISTORY
THE CASA GRANDE RUINS
T
he desert dwellings of the Sonoran Desert changed over time here at Casa Grande Ruins and in surrounding areas. The earliest types consisted of large oval pits dug several feet into the ground. A brush and pole framework covered the pit, and a layer of mud was applied to the outside. These structures are called pit houses, and though pit houses continued to be used, by the 1100’s more permanent, above-ground structures began to be built. Using caliche, a natural concrete type material found under the topsoil throughout the region, they built houses
with solid walls and flat, caliche covered roofs. The 1100’s marked the beginning of significant changes, such as platform mounds being built. Villages became more formally organized. Caliche homes were grouped into calichewalled compounds. And these compounds were arranged around public plazas and structures. The Great House (Casa Grande) was built within one of these compounds and now serves at the main visitation area for the public when they come for a visit to this national monument.
The building of the Great House was a major event of the Classic Period (1100 – 1450 C.E.) Science indicates that this caliche structure was built during the 1300’s and construction appears to have been thoughtfully planned and organized. Tons of material and a huge cooperative human effort were required in the building of the structure. Though many theories have been suggested, there are still no answers as to what exactly the Great House was used for. It is assumed, though, that it was very important to the people who built it and remains so today.
During the late 1300’s and early 1400’s the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People began to leave this area for new locations and rebuilt communities for themselves. It is thought that natural disturbances and illness could have been a factor in leaving this place, though we do not know this for certain. Today, several native groups have links to the ancestral people. Cultural traditions and ongoing research, along with preservation of the ruins, combine to keep history of the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People alive to this day.
The building of the Casa Grande was a major event of the Classic Period (1100 – 1450 C.E.).
