Associate PublisherSET THE STAGE FOR A
Luxurious SUMMER PARTY
by Blake HerzogSummer parties tend to be a dime a dozen. There are so many of them and they tend to have the same elements; meat comes off the grill, drinks are in buckets and coolers, a cornhole set or dart board is set up in the backyard and the paper plates, plasticware and cups are piling up in the trash. However, it’s easy to make your
own gatherings stand out by injecting luxury and style into the proceedings in ways large and small.
SETTING THE TONE
• Invitations — Whether they’re printed or digital, make sure time and location details are clear for
your guests, and include other details that will help them party with minimal fuss like a dress code, parking tips, whether to bring swimwear, requesting information about any dietary preferences or restrictions and whether plusones and beyond are welcome.
• Indoor/outdoor options — It’s pretty fair to assume a lot of guests will want to spend most of their time outside, especially in the natural splendor of Northern Arizona, but it’s hard to predict exactly what the temperature and humidity will be like on any given day or how people will respond to it.
Try to make your living room, kitchen and other public areas of your home equally appealing so guests who need to get out of the sun won’t feel like they’re getting a second-rate experience.
• Drink service — A fullservice bar is a wonderful amenity at a party, but make sure it’ll have nonalcoholic choices for those who choose not to drink or are looking for a break from the booze beyond seltzer and soda.
If you’re going to have a signature cocktail, make sure to have a mocktail counterpart.
• Bring in a few servers — Nothing conveys luxury like relieving people of the awkwardness of having to search out appetizers and drinks and figure out what to do with the plate and cup after they’re done. Splurging on waitstaff will be greatly appreciated by your guests.
• Entertainment — Hiring musicians to perform at your party will save the time you would have spent toiling over a playlist and create a much more memorable party, helping to elevate it into an event your guests will look back on and hope to repeat.
PERSONAL TOUCHES
• The guest list — Focus on bringing together people who you’ll expect to bring enthusiasm and positive energy to the party, keeping in mind which guests know each other or you think might be simpatico.
Try to let them know in advance who they might want to see or meet at the event, and give them a heads up if there’s an ex or someone else they could have an awkward or negative encounter with.
• Thoughtful luxuries — Do everything you can to make attending your party as frictionless as possible for your guests, including extra phone chargers, your Wi-Fi network name and password on prominent display, extra toiletries in the bathroom and maybe even a little something they can take home for breakfast the next day.

Bathrooms Wet Room
by Valerie DemetrosWhen it comes to bathroom upgrades, there is no shortage of ideas. And now more than ever, everyone wants a bathroom as spa-like as possible. One popular option for achieving these spa vibes is by transitioning your bathroom into a wet room.
A wet room is a completely waterproof bathroom space with no separation between the shower and the rest of the bathroom. They are single level in that there are no steps, trays or raised portions.
Because they use space more effectively, adding a wet room can make your bathroom appear larger.
And if you’re aiming toward tranquility and spaciousness, transforming an outdated bathroom into a wet room is the perfect way to maximize your space and add a sense of luxury.
Wet room bathrooms are built with materials designed to get wet and some include a shower space and freestanding tub in their own glass enclosure.
A true wet room without any panels provides you with more room to move, and an open layout is easier to keep clean than a regular shower. However, wet rooms can be a big project to take on.
The tanking process to ensure your room is completely watertight can be significant but is essential. This is a multistep process that includes several layers of waterproofing to ensure an excellent seal — much like a swimming pool.
The two main approaches for tanking a wet room are a self-adhesive bitumenbased waterproof membrane or applying a paint-on liquid wall membrane.
Adding a wing to your home for the in-laws? Adding a wet room, with its seamless design, can ensure accessibility for years to come.
A wet room provides a spacious showering area and the high-end look of a luxurious spa hotel because the look tends to be very streamlined. Done well, a wet room can boost your home’s value. Because it is one big open area, adequate ventilation must be installed to prevent mold and damp spots. The build-up of moisture and condensation is greater in a wet room and fans operated by light switches alone aren’t enough.
A good fan needs to be wired into the room and humidity-tracking extractor fans are best for wet rooms as they work continuously and incrementally, with automatic extraction based on the steam in the room.
If you are planning a full wet room in a large bathroom, omitting any sort of enclosure or screen, think about your choice of fixtures — it’s likely they will get wet from the spray or condensation. For this reason, opt for ceramics flush to the wall and wall mounted. A wall-hung toilet is a superb choice, making cleaning a breeze.
Ensure that the floor tiles you choose are nonslip for wet areas because the entire floor may be getting wet.
And if you don’t have the time and would like a wet room/open feel, there are ways to “fake” it. Use the latest ultra-low profile shower trays and frameless clear-glass shower enclosure for a modern, seamless feel.
The Cell
by Vickie Johnston, Owner and Founder, H2O Healtheople ask me all the time if I think the water will get better. I think I can answer that with 99.9% certainty — they don’t call them “forever chemicals” for nothing!
I’ve watched water quality just get worse and worse for 50 years now. It’s crazy and a downright shame what we have done to our precious drinking water! The worst thing we’ve done to our drinking water is use it to flush toilets and then recycle it back to drinking water; lots of harsh chemicals.
I’ve been educating people for years about good health, and it’s really very simple. Health begins in the cell. Every cell from skin cells to every other cell inside the body has a recipe —a formula – of what it
needs to rebuild itself. You have about 300 million skin cells alone, depending on your size.
Where Health Begins P
Your skin is your largest organ, so it’s more important than most think.
From the moment of conception, cells begin this amazing multiplication magic of splitting and dividing that doesn’t stop until we run out of minerals. Once you run out of minerals, it’s game over.
That is why nutrients are vital to good health. Cells need hydrogen, oxygen and nutrientrich water for this process to keep working in the body. When cells lack these things, everything begins to decline. Healthy cells make a healthy body, and sick cells make a sick body.
Cells in our bodies are water inside and out; they are like little sponges sucking up water. They are looking for the needed nutrients to stay healthy. Without nutrients cells die, and if enough of them die the whole organism will collapse — and death occurs. Cells must have clean hydrogen, oxygen, nutrientrich water to remain well.
Water transports everything through your body to the cell, the good and the bad. Protect your health from diseases, disorders, harmful toxins and costly medical bills by drinking clean water.
Clean water is your best defense against all disease and disorders. Remember, buy a filter or be a filter.

Skin Protection LAYERING
KEY FOR SUMMER
Summer has locked in over the great state of Arid-Zona and we are all doing our best to keep our skin as dewy and moist as possible, but it’s always going to be a battle even in the less-deserty areas in the north.
The order of products applied during your skin care routine generally does not change according to the seasons, but you may choose ones with different compositions depending on your needs. Sunscreen application can vary depending on which type you use.
This is one effective summer skin routine to consider for facing a day in the sun.
VITAMIN C
After completing your cleansing routine, using a vitamin C serum is a great way to start out the morning any day of the year. This is especially true in the summer when you’re facing more and more intense ultraviolet sun rays that trigger free radical production that can lead to premature aging and discoloration.
Some researchers have found evidence that vitamin C reduces wrinkles and improves skin texture and appearance overall and, when used with SPF products, can protect against carcinogenic UV light.
SPRITZES
Face spritzes and mists can be squirted any time you feel the need to reboot your moisture content, but they’re a great add-on to your morning routine for further prepping your skin for the products to come after.
The hydration itself is key but they’re also infused with botanicals and nutrients with health-boosting effects.
SERUM
You’ve already applied your vitamin C serum; now it’s time for a treatment serum to more directly address issues like fine lines, dullness, eye concerns, hydration and plumping. You may want to stack a couple products here to get the results you’re looking for, but don’t neglect to put the moisturizer on, as serums alone don’t deliver the intense moisture you’re looking for in the summer.
MOISTURIZER
Many skin care experts recommend a lighter, less-creamy moisturizer in summer versus winter, assuming that humidity will accelerate with the temperature as it tends to do back East. But use your own judgement on what works best for you and your skin type. Don’t forget about the other things you should do to keep your skin hydrated including drinking water, avoiding long, hot showers, not using products containing alcohol and using SPF protection on your lips.
SUNSCREEN
This one can be a little tricky because most routines leave this crucial step for the end, but some make a distinction for chemical sunscreen, which is usually transparent and absorbs UV rays within your skin. This may need more time to be absorbed and should be applied at the beginning. Consult the instructions and your dermatologist to figure out the correct approach. Mineral sunscreen, which has a whitish cast unless tinted and forms a physical barrier on top of the skin, always should be the last product you apply before makeup.
Summer Cocktails
TO BEAT THE HEAT
uilding a summer cocktail isn’t rocket science. Ice in some form is a must. Citrus and tropical flavors are highly recommended, paired with a strong yet bright liquor. Try these three classic recipes for a summer refresher that won’t let you down.
THE MOJITO
• 2.5 oz Rum (white)
• 1 oz Lime juice (fresh)
• 1 oz Simple syrup (see recipe below)
• 8 fresh Mint leaves
• Lime-flavored club soda or sparkling water, ice
In a cocktail shaker, add rum, lime juice, simple syrup and mint leaves. Muddle (smash) the mint leaves well. Add ice and shake the cocktail, then strain into a tall glass such as a Collins or highball glass. Add ice and top off with the club soda. Garnish with a mint sprig.
You can buy simple syrup or make your own. The simplest way is to combine equal parts water and sugar in a small pot over medium heat. Whisk until the sugar is fully dissolved. Do not allow the mixture to boil.
Cool and use as needed, or store in a container in the refrigerator and use for months as needed.
Serves 2
THE PINA COLADA
• 1 oz White rum
Best Classic B
• 1 oz Dark rum
• 3 oz Pineapple juice
• 1.5 oz Coconut cream
• 1 oz Heavy cream
• Dash Angostura bitters, ice
Put everything in a blender with ice. Blend for about 15 seconds. Pour it into a hurricane glass. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and/or maraschino cherry.
THE MARGARITA
• Sea salt, for the glass
• 1 oz Tequila
• 1 oz Orange liqueur (Cointreau or Grand Marnier)
• 1 oz fresh Lime juice, plus slices for garnish
• ½ oz Agave nectar or simple syrup, more to taste, ice
Salt the rim of a glass by rubbing a lime wedge around the edge and dipping it onto a small plate of salt. Fill the glass with ice. Place the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and agave in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into the glass. Taste and stir in more agave nectar, if desired.
GROW A Bartender ’s Garden
OF
YOUR
OWN
When you are hosting friends and drinks are flowing, fresh ingredients mean you’re making the best cocktails.
Planting a cocktail garden is a great way to customize and improve drinks, especially if you enjoy gardening.
Fresh herbs elevate the taste of any drink with an extra layer of flavor. They’re easy to grow and can be planted in containers for year-round freshness.
Basil: Pick the leaves of this annual herb as the plant grows and muddle the basil or make basil syrup.
Lavender: This herb adds a lovely light floral flavor to drinks, whether muddled, infused into vodka or turned into lavender syrup.
Lemon balm or lemon verbena: Easy to grow, they add a lemon flavor to infusions and homemade mixers.
Mint: Try different varieties like chocolate mint, and remember it can take over a garden so plant in a controlled space.
Sage: The savory taste of sage works in cocktails. It pairs well with fruits like pineapple and mango.
DRINKS
Basil
gimletTypically, gimlets combine simple syrup, gin and lime juice. And this one is close to that recipe except we’ve added a bit of fresh basil to elevate the flavors.
In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle about eight basil leaves. Add the juice of one lime, 1 ½ teaspoon simple syrup and 1 ½ ounces of gin. Fill with ice and shake well. Then strain into a martini glass.
Lavender martini
This cocktail calls for lavender syrup, made simply by bringing 1 cup each water and sugar to a boil and simmer until sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and add 1 tablespoon of dried lavender, letting it steep for 20 minutes then straining.
To a cocktail shaker with ice, add 1 ounce vodka, ½ ounce lemon juice and ¼ ounce lavender syrup. Shake and strain for a beautiful light-purple cocktail.
Silk Grey Tie
Muddle 2 lemon verbena leaves with 2 teaspoons superfine sugar in a cocktail glass. Fill with crushed ice and add 1 ½ ounces Absolut Citron and ¾ ounce lemon juice. Top up with lemon-lime soda and garnish with lemon slice.
Old Cuban
A mojito topped off with champagne?
(Yes, please.) In a cocktail shaker, muddle six mint leaves with 1 ½ tablespoon lime juice and simple syrup, each. Add 1 ½ ounces rum and 2 dashes of bitters. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice and shake until cold, then strain into cocktail glass. Top with champagne and garnish with mint.
Bourbon and sage cocktail
To a rocks glass filled with ice, add ¾ ounce lemon juice, 2 ounces bourbon and 1 ounce sage simple syrup (simple syrup infused with sage). Stir and garnish with lemon slice and sage leaves.
Go All Out
WITH YOUR OUTDOOR TABLE
When you’re holding an outdoor dinner party or gathering there’s no need to make your tablescape as formal as the indoor equivalent, but you can still strive for opulence within your presentation.
Your table can take inspiration from the surrounding environment or create its own, and given its importance to a dinner party can make or break the occasion.
THE TABLE
Most of us have outdoor-use deck or patio furniture in our yards but it may not be large enough to accommodate your dinner party or too flimsy to work for a special occasion. Bring your dining table out instead if it’s going to be under cover or you’re certain the weather will be cooperative for a luxe touch that everyone will appreciate. A white linen tablecloth will provide a great background for your lovely tablescape.
THE CENTERPIECE
If you’re fortunate enough to have a grand mountain or forest backdrop you’ll probably lose any competition you try to get into with it, so you can choose an understated centerpiece of pine branches and cones or a pretty table runner with small bud vases containing wildflowers.
In other circumstances, it’s safe to go with lush vines, resplendent bouquets in elegant yet strong and low vases, fragrant pillar candles, glass and ceramic art figures and anything else that will fit.
PLACE SETTINGS
Here is where you can really go to town (or country) for your guests.
Place small potted plants at each seat as party favors and use plate chargers made of natural materials like wood or even granite for an extra touch of
glamour. Paper or Styrofoam plates are not going to make your guests feel valued and won’t be especially easy to use.
If the table is immediately outside your home, it’s easy to bring out the fine ceramic plates or even the china. Any but the most delicate wine glasses should work as well. The farther you move from your kitchen the more advisable it is to switch to high-quality plastic versions for both.
Cloth napkins are an easy way to add class no matter what else the table holds.
MAKE HOME MORE
Luxurious
WITH SUMMER UPGRADES
'Tis the season in Northern Arizona to brighten and modernize your home and yard with upgrades and renovations.
Summer’s weather makes it an ideal time to undertake projects large and small to make your world more comfortable, memorable and stylish. If your décor hasn’t been refreshed in more than five years it likely could use a reboot, or if your landscaping is tired and struggling that’s your cue to come in and replace it with plants that will add to your enjoyment and home value.
One of these overhauls may be just what the house doctor ordered to revive your abode.
REVAMP AN UNDERUSED ROOM
Ending up with spaces that aren’t functional anymore is a part of life as kids grow up and move out, hobbies and interests change and technology changes your entertainment and fitness equipment needs.
Take a moment to reflect on any rooms that might fall into this category and what it would take for you to spend more time there; then come up with a plan to make it a reality.
GLAM UP YOUR HOME OFFICE
If your job is full-time remote or a hybrid schedule, you can use any downtime that comes from a reduced summer workload to upgrade a room that may not have gotten much attention since its founding about three years ago. It’s time to find a desk and chair that are truly comfortable, add colors that rejuvenate you while helping you focus and insert a few frills to make it more sumptuous, like a leather desk pad or an alarm clock that doubles as modern art.
INSTALL A SUNROOM OR SCREENED PORCH
If you have an outdoor space adjacent to your house that you wish you could use throughout the year this could be your solution.
A sunroom with wall-to-wall windows can be used almost yearround here without climate control and brings abundant natural light into your living space, while a screened porch offers less control but better circulation of fresh air and aromas.
Surround

Studies show the SNOO provides families with an added one to two hours of sleep each night. At $1,695, if it can give everyone two more hours of sleep a night, it’s worth every penny. And it’s even available with a rental option to try it out.

And when the little one is ready for a crib, it’s time for the Nursery Works Vetro Crib. The “ultra-chic,” hand-crafted, clear acrylic, 100% recyclable, nontoxic crib, favored by the Kardashians, runs $3,000 to $5,000. The crib also comes with three mattress height settings.

For a mere $58, you can buy a luxury pacifier designed by Emporio Armani. The Armani logo is front and center and comes in white, pink and navy blue with a clip and a strap to keep it from hitting the floor.

Finally, for the baby who has everything, Louis Vuitton’s Baby Wardrobe is a smaller version of the adult travel trunk with blush, silk interior and classic brown/gold signature canvas. The wardrobe will last a lifetime and can be reused for other purposes down the road. 19” x 35” x 21” at $73,000.
THE BROOCH IS BACK,
Baby
Brooches are a type of jewelry you may associate with Victorian novels, glass-case museum displays or photos of the late Queen, but they are far from lost to the mists of time.
Although brooch adornment took a hit after the Depression, the trend has continued on and off since. Former Secretary of State and U.N. diplomat Madeleine Albright famously used her brooches as subtle political commentary in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Twenty years later they’re being rediscovered as accessories that can go on nearly any outfit.
They come in nearly all shapes and sizes and are made of gold, silver, platinum or nearly any other metal and can sport authentic or simulated jewels across the spectrum.
Conscious consumption and recycled fashion have helped fuel their rise, and gorgeous specimens can be found in antique and consignment stores in person and online and make for hours of happy hunting. They’re very similar to lapel pins but tend to be larger and purely ornamental, while lapel pins can serve many purposes.
Originally used as fasteners for collars, capes and cuffs, they’ve evolved into sweet or sumptuous
statements typically worn on the left side of an outfit, but they can go anywhere in more casual settings, including in the center, on the right, at the waist or pinned several at a time onto jeans or jean jackets.
They’re even being worn in clusters of three or more for some serious bling.
If you want to try the look before buying one you can even use an earring, as long as it won’t damage the fabric or irritate your skin.
SHAPE SHIFTERS
One of the best things about brooches (pronounced like “broaches”) is their sheer variety.
You can find vintage cameo pins, dainty birds, colorful butterflies, designer logos, bold jewel-encrusted flowers and crosses and much more. Some even have interchangeable gems or other elements for a truly adaptable accessory.
Some can become the centerpiece of a larger statement by attaching to gold chains or strings of pearls draped onto a dress and over the shoulder.
The brooch’s vintage bona fides gives it extra power as a fashion statement, especially when it’s used in fresh or unusual ways for a thoroughly modern splash of individuality.

Don’t Let
JET LAG
CRASH YOUR VACATION
Alot of us are taking our longer vacations to farther-flung destinations this time of year, setting ourselves up for our greatest adventures but also our worst bouts of jet lag.
Groggy, fatigued and dyspeptic is not how you want to feel while you’re at the Parthenon or whatever other wonder of the world you’re visiting. There are a few steps you can take to loosen its grip and enjoy your trip to the fullest.
ADOPT YOUR DESTINATION’S SCHEDULE
Gradually moving your bedtime earlier (or later if you’re heading west) paves the way to a smoother transition once you land. If you’re not able to do this for a few days before you leave, reset your watch as soon as you get on the plane and sleep or don’t sleep according to the time zone you’re bound for.
STAY HYDRATED
It’s easy to end up dehydrated during air travel between the dryness of the air and the lower air pressure found in the typical cabin. On top of that many of us may reduce our water intake to avoid in-flight bathroom runs, but this can be a self-defeating strategy as dehydration can intensify the effects of jet lag.
It’s a better idea to bring an empty water bottle past airport security that you can fill up before you board the plane, drink any additional water you may need on the plane and give in to that urge if you need to — you don’t want the restroom to be the first thing you’re looking for once you reach your longed-for destination.
CONSIDER MELATONIN
This is a supplement based on the chemical that helps to signal your brain that it’s time to go to sleep, and it can be taken before you go to bed or early in the morning if you’re waking up earlier than you want to. You should consult your doctor first to see if any medications you take could have a negative interaction with it, and get your supply from a reputable manufacturer because food supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA.
Arlberg to Salzburg
by Tori Ward, Cruise and Resort Specialist, ROX TravelWhen purchasing train tickets for reserved seats in Europe, I always hope for the best views. Although we selected the high-speed Rail Jet Express that departs Zurich shortly before 11 a.m. there are several other, albeit slower, options.
By the time we arrived in Salzburg at 4:03 p.m., I wanted to get back on the train and do it again in the opposite direction.
It was the most beautiful train journey I’ve ever taken. The snow-covered Alps as the train ascends upward through the Arlberg pass are dramatic with lush meadows below full of activity as the final harvest before winter sets in.
We blinked once and almost missed Liechtenstein, which the train passed through.
Our hotel in Salzburg was close to the station and a good walk after a long ride. After a quick check-in, we immediately merged onto Linzer Gasse with the rest of the pedestrian traffic and headed for the riverfront.
Wandering through shops and arguing over dinner choices took up considerable time, but we didn’t stray across the river until after dark. Views from the east side of the river granted us the best aspect of Fortress Hohensalzburg, the 11th century castle that dominates the skyline.
The evening sky was overcast as we trooped across the bridge into old town Salzburg, the Baroque historical heart of the city with its Sound of Music sites familiar from film and a previous visit during college.
Carnival rides and booths were in the process of being prepared for Octoberfest all around Residenzplatz, where Mozart lived as a youngster.
The beautiful 17th century Salzburg Cathedral with its museum full of sacred items sprawled majestically over the square while the castle bathed in light, glowed on the hilltop above.
There is a cable car up to the fortress, and even if you only go up to the outside terrace bar for a beer, the view from that vantage point is amazing.
The following morning we sprinted as quickly as possible through cold and rain-soaked streets to Mirabellplatz to catch our bus for Lake Hallstatt.
It might be a community known for salt mines since prehistoric times, but the beautiful Alpine village that curves along the lake is so pristine with its clean lines and brightly colored homes tightly packed on the thin strip of land between water and mountain that social images of it as the most Instagramable town in the world has created an explosion of over-tourism.
The town strictly limits the number of tourists allowed in each day so advanced planning is vital.
We returned early enough for a lovely stroll through Mirabellgarten. Admission to both the gardens and palace is free. And, although the main attraction in the palace is the Marble Hall, the staircase leading up to it is an attraction in itself.
The palace hosts a Mozart concert almost every night, and it is a popular attraction, so plan early.
Salzburg was cozy like a sweater, but we were leaving the next morning for Vienna, a much more formal affair.
Summer Styles
COVER THE COLOR PALETTE
by Michelle Beck, Owner, Purple Clover BoutiqueWith the warmer weather of summer it becomes easier to decide what to wear. Gone are bulky layers and jackets, and style becomes simpler. A perfect outfit for summer can be jeans and a T-shirt or a dress.
If you want to take your style up a notch, though, the first place to look is to color choices.
Black and white are always classic, but in 2023 bright colors are very trendy. Vibrant lavender, luscious red, bold yellow and the deep bluish green known as verdigris are all very popular. It’s time to shed the drab colors of winter and embrace an entire new season.
This summer will show you beautiful floral prints. Colorful flowers are simply everywhere.
Walk into your favorite boutique or department store and you will be met with this fun and uplifting trend. Every color palette is represented with bold designs and more understated patterns. Try something new and add a floral design to your wardrobe.
Tie-dye is making a comeback! Yes, what’s old is new again, and designers are showing a more subdued version of this now fashion staple.
What is different is that dip-dye and ombre coloring showcase tiedye patterns in a new and elegant light. Gone are the neon swirls of the 1970s — today’s fashions show a more subdued pattern while still keeping this trend fresh and new. The secret to any chic summer wardrobe is the perfect pair of bright white jeans. Look at this seasonal staple as a blank canvas. You can have a pair in ecru, ivory or cream. Just accessorize with a bright top or fun sandals. White denim is available in every style — the skinny jean, the highwaisted mom jean and even the cargo style are all represented. Metallic designs are for every season. You may assume that sequins are only for the winter months. This summer look is being seen in gold and silver designs both in handbags and especially in sandals. A little bit of “bling” can go a long way in taking your outfit from day to evening. Enjoy the summer months, and update your wardrobe to embrace the longer days and warmer temperatures. Your favorite boutique or department store is ready to help you with this new season.

CLEAR your Mind
WITH A MUD BATH
by Blake HerzogMud may be a dirty and dangerous substance in some contexts, but its richness and texture have also captured the imagination of healers as far back as ancient Greece, Mexico and Egypt.
For centuries mud baths have been used to treat such skin conditions as eczema and psoriasis, joint pain from arthritis and other conditions, musculoskeletal disorders and to
draw toxins out from the body.
Today, the limited amount of scientific research that’s been done has not been able to verify all these claims, but in most cases mud baths are a safe and hygienic spa treatment that leaves clients feeling pampered and rejuvenated.
There are plenty of good reasons to treat yourself to a luxurious dip in the mud, including:
RELAXATION
Reputable spas don’t use just any old kind of mud when drawing a mud bath; it’s a mixture of volcanic ash, organic peat and warmed mineral water, ideally from hot springs located on the property or nearby, as it is in the mud mecca of Calistoga, California.
The ash gives the mixture buoyancy so the client isn’t weighed down as many people fear they would be, instead floating on top until the attendant wraps the mud around the body. The experience is often compared to being wrapped in a thick, warm blanket, and most find it an immensely calming 10 to 20 minutes.
The mud soak itself is followed by at least a shower and usually
The weightlessness relieves any pressure on your joints and tendons and bones, allowing clients to be free of the pain and pressure they may feel on solid ground. This may be the source of anecdotal evidence of mud’s effectiveness in treating rheumatoid arthritis and other painful conditions.
Others hypothesize the mineral content of the water used to make the mud reduces inflammation within the body that can cause these and many other ills.
SOFTER SKIN
Many who try mud baths report an immediate impact on their skin’s condition, with it feeling smoother and looking plumper after floating in the intense moisture of a muddy bathtub.
The mud also is an exfoliate that can gently help you remove the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal the radiant new one underneath. Many people attribute this to the magnesium, zinc, sulfur, bromine and other minerals that may help draw toxins out from the skin.
DON’T GET BOGGED DOWN
Mud baths are not recommended for those who are pregnant or have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure, open cuts or rashes on the skin (including those caused by psoriasis or other skin disorders), have consumed excess alcohol or are sensitive to heat.
Brightens Any Face
When you or your face are feeling a little tired or rundown, highlighter is a fantastic cosmetic tool for a dewier and more youthful complexion.
But choosing one that’s too light or dark for your skin tone can take your look to places you may not want to go, closer to a Halloween visage or an otherworldly sheen. The near-universal recommendation is to choose a product that’s about two shades lighter than you, but there are other nuances to keep in mind while you shop for yours.
SKIN TONE
Besides getting the right color, undertones and sheens also are important factors to consider when finding a highlighter that flatters your face.
Iridescent undertones look especially bright on the fair-skinned but can be too icy for those with darker tones. Those with mediumtoned skin such as olive or tan can try iridescent products, but it may be safer to go with golden or champagne hues without too much shimmer.
If you’re on the darker end of the spectrum, orange can give you a stunning glow, as well as deep jewel tones and bronzy or coppery cast.
SKIN TYPE
Highlighters come in three formats, and each can come across differently depending on how well-hydrated our skin is.
Those with oilier skin and larger pores can benefit the most from a powdery highlighter that can absorb sebum and add a more subtle, lit-from-within glow to your already shiny skin. Those with drier or aging skin may do better with a creamy highlighter that can get your face glistening just enough to push you to the front of everyone’s mind with your sweet shimmer.
HIGHLIGHTER TYPE
Between the basic powder versus liquid/ cream binary for highlighters there are other differentiators that give you an idea of the kind of effect they will give you and how they will fit into your day.
• “Strobing” — All highlighters have strobing effects, but those labeled with this term tend to not have a lot of glittery content, using other highly reflective materials to give you your glow.
• Shimmer — These generally have either relatively few shimmery particles with a low-key brightness that works for everyday application or more of these particles for a dramatic presentation that can pump you up for a late afternoon or evening date.
• Glitter — Actual glitter is mixed into these highlighters and they can make you look like a disco ball, but this might be exactly the vibe you’re looking for at parties, clubs or high-profile dinners and award ceremonies. When you want to look like a star, this is your go-to!
WHERE DOES IT GO?
Apply highlighter over primer (and foundation if you’re using it) and under blush, lipstick and other final touches. It should go at the highest points of your face: the top of the cheekbones and along the brow bone and down the center of the face, hitting the forehead, nose, cupid’s-bow (just above the lips) and on the chin.
Micro-coring
Skin Treatments
CLEARED BY FDA
by Valerie DemetrosIn the world of aesthetics and beauty, there’s no getting around the use of needles. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons count on them for precise placement of dermal fillers and injectables.
Micro-coring is a brand-new FDA-cleared technology that uses hollowed-out needles to nonsurgically remove pieces of loose skin without the need for plastic surgery.
How does it work? This new process uses a controlled removal of thousands of tiny columns of skin, which also create micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production. Following this, the skin’s natural healing, reparation functions and tissue remodeling take over.
Micro-coring technology was developed from observing surrounding skin-tightening and shrinking when removing small amounts of skin. By extracting micro-cores of skin, there is the added value of an almost immediate close of the skin and full healing over several days.
Of course, micro-coring doesn’t replace a facelift, but will greatly improve the skin’s texture, say dermatologists.
A facelift reshapes the underlying tissues and removes extra skin but does not rejuvenate the skin. Micro-coring can help renew the skin. However, a facelift will always generate a more dramatic result.
The first step when micro-coring is lidocaine injections and injectable anesthetics to numb the area. Next,
the handheld device is guided by a doctor as it punches out thousands of tiny pieces of skin, suctioning the removed tissue as it goes. These skin “micro-cores” are so small they’re invisible to the naked eye.
The procedure removes up to 4% to 8% of the skin in the treated area. The hollow needles are less than half a millimeter in diameter, about half the size of a standard ear-piercing needle. After leaving behind about 10,000 holes, the skin then closes, allowing it to heal completely over several days.
Theoretically, the resulting inflammation and healing response in your skin leads to increased collagen production and subsequent tightening.
The treatment itself takes about 30 minutes, and most patients need three sessions one month apart. Unlike a lunchtime procedure, you’ll need to lay low for about three days.
While the skin is recovering, avoid harsh acids and exfoliators for a few days. Instead, opt for a mild cleanser, a light moisturizer and sunscreen.
Micro-coring is still in its early stages, but clinical trials found that 90% of patients showed improvement on the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale, a five-point scale used in clinical studies to assess improvement of patient appearance post-treatment. Expect to see results four to six months after completing treatment.

Lip Oils
PROVIDE
HEALTHY, SEXY SHINE
Who doesn’t love a glossy, sophisticated lip, whether it’s bare or bright?
The right lips can make an outfit. But lip gloss is not meant to be hydrating, it’s just makeup, and it can be sticky and sometimes even goopy. And lip balms are moisturizing, but they are waxy, and lip balms containing phenol, menthol and salicylic acid actually make your lips drier.
So step aside, lipstick, lip balm and lip gloss — lip oil is taking over as the new alternative to healthy, shiny, sexy lips. Lip oils offer the shine of gloss while softening and keeping your lips hydrated all day. If you’re curious about which to buy, read on.
CLARINS LIP COMFORT OIL
This version includes a hydrating blend of jojoba and hazelnut oils for plenty of moisture. Clarins also offers an oversized applicator that’s curved to hug your lips. Some options bring a sheer wash of color while others react with the pH of your lips for a personalized hue. Some even have lip-smacking flavors.
HOURGLASS NO. 28 LIP TREATMENT OIL
This splurge is worth it. While it increases moisture levels, it also improves lip texture and reduces the depth of wrinkles. The 24-karat gold-plated tip not only looks luxurious, it’s also antibacterial. There are clear and tinted options.
OGEE LUXURY ORGANICS TINTED SCULPTED LIP OIL
If you prefer using lipsticks and solids, choose Ogee. This chubby, oil-based pencil brings oodles of moisture and glides across lips. Main ingredients include jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid and peppermint oil. It also comes in a nice selection of shades.
WINKY LUX LIP OIL
This TikTok-famous lip oil is jam-packed with vitamin E and peptides. It leaves a glossy shimmer and features avocado, sunflower and jojoba oils to keep your lips nourished. Winky offers clear, barely-there tints and brighter shades.
DIOR ADDICT LIP GLOW OIL
This lip oil is formulated to enhance your lips. You’ll love the shiny, nonsticky and cherry-oil infused goodness that nourishes, protects and revitalizes your lips. Dior offers numerous shades from light pink all the way to mahogany.
FENTY BEAUTY CHERRY
TREAT CONDITIONING + STRENGTHENING LIP OIL
Singer Rihanna created Fenty Beauty believing that makeup should be fun. This top-trending, ultra-hydrating lip oil goes on clear and keeps your lips continually moisturized. Jojoba seed and rosehip fruit oils hydrate and strengthen your lips’ moisture barrier, leading to plump and fuller lips.
CHARLOTTE TILBURY’S MAGIC LIP OIL CRYSTAL ELIXIR
Charlotte’s crystal-infused lip oil conditions by day, works as a lip mask by night. The formula includes Sqisandryl, a plant extract from the schisandra chinesis fruit, as well as swertian and resurrection leaf extracts to hydrate and smooth lips, lock in moisture, reduce the appearance of lines and offer plumper-looking lips. Hyaluronic acid also hydrates your lips. The clear oil can be used alone or on top of lipstick for a glossy colorful look.
YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE WITH
Shake Up Vibration Therapy
The Beach Boys were far from the first to talk about good vibrations. While of a different sort, the ancient Greeks employed vibrations to help warriors heal faster from their injuries. The vibes came from sawing wood, plucking an instrument or riding a donkey. Vibration therapy in the 19th century was used to treat morbidity, what were called “nervous diseases” and even Parkinson’s disease. It was thought to help reduce weight and build muscles.
Such therapy mostly fell by the wayside until the Russians in the 1970s used it on their Olympic team to speed up recovery and by cosmonauts to build up their strength after space travel.
In today’s whole-body vibration therapy — used by standing, sitting or lying on a machine with a vibration platform — energy is transmitted to your body as the machine produces high-frequency vibrations, forcing muscles to contract and relax dozens of times each second.
You may have spotted an upright one or one that looks like a thick plate (or giant Roomba) on the floor in your gym, but you can buy these machines for home use.
Some say as little as 15 minutes a day three times a week may burn fat, improve flexibility, enhance blood flow, reduce soreness and build strength. However, in-depth research on wholebody vibration is inadequate, others say, in showing whether it stands up to the benefits of walking, biking or swimming.
Still, research shows that wholebody vibration combined with reducing calories may promote weight loss and help improve muscle strength and bone density. While considered safe for people with limited mobility to reduce sore and stiff joints and older adults to help with balance, muscle strength and coordination, this type of therapy is not recommended for people with a history of blood clots, pregnant women and those with pacemakers or other medical devices.
Vibration therapy also is not recommended for certain medical conditions such as multiple sclerosis, heart disease or epilepsy.
Routine UP YOUR J Hair Care
ust when you think you have the perfect hair care routine, the industry comes up with another innovation. If you’re wondering which are trends and which are genuine advances, here are a few suggested essentials for your routine right now:
VITAMIN A
Vitamin A targets the pores in your scalp to produce more oil, specifically sebum, which keeps strands hydrated and full of shine. Hair supplements are common and you can find treatments and shampoos with vitamin A. Just don’t overdo it — excess vitamin A can cause headaches and nausea.
CASTOR OIL
Essential oils are full of healthy fats for nutrition, and some can nourish and moisturize your hair, promoting growth and elasticity. To use, simply apply the oil to damp hair. Then shampoo and condition. For fine hair, double cleanse and avoid applying directly to the scalp to avoid limp hair and oily roots.
ROSEMARY OIL
Rosemary has anti-inflammatory properties to improve scalp blood circulation and healthy growth and it moisturizes the scalp. Mix in a couple drops with another oil, like coconut or jojoba, and massage directly into the scalp. Wait 20 minutes, then shampoo.
You can also opt for products that contain rosemary oil or leaf.
HYALURONIC ACID
You already know how this helps your skin. It’s no wonder it helps hair also, locking in moisture and protecting hair from environmental pollution. Find a brand that has it included, like The INKEY List’s Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Hair Treatment.
PROTEIN
Protein is essential for healthy hair. It strengthens weak hair and builds resilience. Look for products that contain proteins such as keratin, wheat protein or panthenol to seal off the cuticle for smoother hair and prevent frizz and split ends.
GLYCOLIC ACID
This acid promotes a healthy microbiome and removes build-up by balancing the natural oils and supporting the hair follicles. Look for a glycolic acid scalp treatment like Difeel Elite Glycolic Acid & Biotin Stimulating Hair Serum.

Luxury Cars CREATE A GALLERY FOR
YOUR
In 1909, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House in Oak Park, Illinois, became one of the first American homes to include a garage. The home had a three-car garage, and Wright protested its design, noting that garages just attract clutter.
Home design has come a long way since then, and garages have now become a luxurious extension
of your well-designed home. Your favorite cars need to be pampered and in a secure environment where they can be appreciated.
Regardless of the size of your collection, keeping your favorite cars onsite rather than in storage means you get to take them out at a moment’s notice, as well as admire them with or without company.
And keeping them at home in a totally discreet environment that no one except you knows about is the ultimate in garage design. There is nothing new about creating a large garage space at home, but instead of treating it as just storage space, why not create a unique, plush space that you can relax in and take your time to appreciate your favorite cars. Give yourself the space to entertain friends, family and business colleagues with a comfortable lounge area with your cars displayed in a gallerylike space.
While designing your ultimate garage, include such special features as a sunken seating area, a large cinematic screen, a bar, dining space or even a view into an adjacent swimming pool. And a subterranean garage isn’t just for Tony Stark. Multimilliondollar garage designs can be incorporated right underneath your home or even under the garage, making them not only hidden storage but livable space as well. Add a few skylights to bring some light into the area. Sliding wall, lifts, smart glass and programmable lighting
make the garage a welcoming and efficient space.
Don’t forget that cars need to be kept in properly ventilated and humidity-controlled environments for maximum efficiency and care. Make sure your designer is aware of your cars’ particular needs.
If going underground isn’t possible, you may want to consider converting an existing structure such as a barn, warehouse, pool house, etc. Be sure to insulate it well and add a high-end ventilation system as well as added security and interior designs that complement your home and style.
Add Flair Kitchen Cabinet Hardware
This year take your kitchen cabinet hardware up a notch or two because in 2023, this hardware is making a statement — your statement. Which touches lend themselves to your sense of style, whimsy, sophistication or practicality?
Consider your overall look in the kitchen, remembering that the general design rule when mixing materials in a kitchen is to consider groups such as cabinet hardware, appliances and faucets. Let’s go from there.
Rethink your all-white kitchen with matte black hardware, and at least redo the hardware.
Bar pulls or pulls currently are the most popular kitchen hardware; they excel at handling heavy, large and oversized cabinets. The experts say cabinets
look better with hardware, so if knobs fit your vision, go for it.
“Bold” is trending this year, whether in oversized brass pulls or color-contrasting smaller hardware. Whatever size hardware, consider these possibilities:
• Textured
• Jeweled
• Old World
• Sleek
• Gold (trend continues from previous years)
• Copper (coming back)
WITH YOUR
• Weathered or brushed nickel
• Glass and geometric shapes
• Wood grained
By Old World, we mean knobs ranging from evil eye motifs to those resembling lotus buds and other inspiration from the Silk Road as being created by New York-based designer Young Huh. Color is big this year, and Italian born Parisian designer Fabrizio Casiraghi has used turquoise pulls on white cabinets — set above a terra cotta floor. Be inspired and take some time this summer redoing your kitchen cabinet hardware. Just the discussions on what might work for your kitchen are sure to be interesting.
LUXURY IS STANDARD

Basement
High-End Paradise
The basement is an extension of your home and its style and should be treated with the same amount of design and attention.
The first step is to think about how you plan to use the space. Will you use it during the day or at night, and will you need to add plumbing, walls or skylights?
Check out the following ideas for inspiration while planning your subterranean getaway.
1. Add a spa with massage tables, sauna and cold-plunge pool for the definitive spa experience at home.
2. Include a wine cellar and a comfortable and stylish space to admire and enjoy your wine solo or with friends.
3. Consider the ultimate home gym. Add everything you need right downstairs and make sure it’s designed for optimal use. Include a high-end sound system to do it right.
4. A faux fireplace can make the space more inviting and comfortable.
5. A basement practically begs for a home theater with individual recliners and a small kitchen with a professional popcorn machine. You may need to add custom AV work and extra sound insulation.
6. Consider recessed lighting to use the space.
7. Keep the pallet light and bright, especially if there are no windows or skylights.
8. Add a small kitchen to make the space even more livable.
9. If you plan to entertain, incorporating a bar and stools can make the space more inviting.
10. Instead of just ping pong, consider billiards, shuffleboard and even an indoor basketball court with seating to watch the game.
11. Underground auto storage, as well as comfortable seating, can offer space to admire your collection in style. Hydraulics can raise the cars up to street level as needed.
12. Install a primo work-fromhome set up. Add space for colleagues to join you for meetings and after-work drinks at your underground bar.
13. Use mirrors to add the illusion of more space in a small basement.
14. If you’re a reader, create a library with cozy seating and lighting for reading in comfort and privacy.
15. If you’re looking for a different kind of workout, add a climbing wall to one side of the basement and let the kids literally climb the walls.
16. Add an underground pool.
17. Incorporate a light well to bring natural light to the space. Light wells are three times brighter than side windows and can flood basements with light.
Don’t be bound by functionality and practicality. Make it a fun place and try out a crazy theme, cool wall art, unusual color patterns or anything else that comes to mind.
PUT AESTHETICALLY ATTRACTIVE
Everywhere Arches
by Blake HerzogThe interior design trend embracing curved lines and surfaces that came to the fore last year is an enticing choice for anyone seeking a soft, calming atmosphere for their home, and arches are one of the biggest stars of this movement. Their sweeping lines and link to architectural features going back millennia add artistry and gravitas to the soothing vibe they impart to any tableau.
Details large and small, built-in, painted-on or installed can reflect and magnify the arch shape almost to infinity.
DOORWAYS
The most prominent interior feature that can be arched also is one of the most effective.
Curved openings in partitions can provide a broad connection and spacious feeling to any two rooms while maintaining a degree of separation that’s increasingly valuable to today’s homeowners. They can be formal or informal depending on the context and either way offer a pleasing frame for the view into the next room.
It’s relatively easy to convert an existing doorway to an arch. Putting French doors into that arch is a different matter but create a stunning effect.
WINDOWS
Just like doorways, arches give an appealing structure to your view of the outdoors and add to a home’s curb appeal as well.
Most are divided into panes to form a grid, though some have more Gothic overtones with elaborate designs at the top of the archway. Their commanding presence elevates a room while integrating more outdoor splendor into your indoor environment.
It’s similarly simple to convert a rectangular window to an arched beauty and a new one can absolutely be added as well, even to a brick house.
ALCOVES
Arched alcoves or niches can be installed into any room to add stylish shelving for storage and/or display space, built-in benches, reading nooks, cozy armchair placement and other eye-catching features that break up wall space and increase visibility for everything from books to statues to bathtubs, depending on their size and location. Wall thickness and load bearing properties may limit your ability to add these features to your home, though.
CEILINGS
Arched or vaulted ceilings are easier to incorporate into new builds than existing structures and are completely worth the effort.
They make any space look larger and airier, and in a luxury home they’re almost essential for conferring the grandeur you’re looking for.
If having an archway in your home appeals to you, you can add interest in your home with just a domed entryway, barrel ceiling in the hall or even a cove vault in the living room or bedroom. The options are endless.
FURNISHINGS AND DÉCOR
If you’re craving arches at home now and don’t want to wait for a reno, your options are nearly limitless. Arched mirrors are a go-to that does the job magnificently, but once you start looking you’ll see arches everywhere. Fireplaces, hanging storage, light fixtures, tables large and small, cabinets and cupboards, sofas, you name it.
You can even paint arches onto the walls, a tactic that works especially well when forming a faux headboard for a bed.

BE A TRENDSETTER: WITH COLOR DRENCH A ROOM
by Valerie DemetrosWhen you think of decorating your home, most of the emphasis is usually placed on mixing textures, patterns and styles — but color drenching is changing these ideas with a radical way to decorate.
Color drenching, a daring new trend, is the process of using all the same color in different forms throughout a space including walls, woodwork, ceilings and furniture. Design experts are predicting that color drenching will be end up being one of the biggest interior trends for 2023.
Color drenching can make a room feel larger or more cozy depending on the shades used. You can create the illusion of a larger room by painting walls and ceilings the same light color or use a darker color on the walls, ceiling and furniture to create drama and a sense of luxury.
The key to color drenching is to carry the same tone throughout the space as much as possible. It’s important to choose colors that speak to you and create the feeling you want whether that’s joyful, energized, calm or peaceful.
South-facing rooms can make colors feel warmer and more intense, so use paler hues. Northfacing rooms can feel cold, so
use warmer tones like sunny yellow or warm terra cotta. Color drenching accurately means sticking with one tone, but there are no strict rules. A slightly deeper tone on the woodwork and a lighter tone on the ceiling also can work. Using the same color in different finishes can add interest but maintain the strength of the look.
If you decide to try your hand at color drenching, consider the sunlight in the room throughout the day. With a monochromatic treatment in a room, lighting
becomes crucial since light and shade created by reflection will display architectural details rather than contrasting color.
Furnishing a color-drenched room requires balance of contrasting colors and textures. For example, a room drenched in warm plum or soft pink could use a green sofa for dramatic effect. If you have gone big and painted the ceiling as well as the walls and woodwork, use a contrasting rug for effect, and look for patterned fabrics and interesting accessories to layer colors.
