THE LEGENDARY PRESCOTT RODEO: CELEBRATING OVER 136 YEARS OF WESTERN TRADITION

FROM EVERETT BOWMAN TO CHARMAYNE JAMES, A LOOK BACK AT THE WORLD'S OLDEST RODEO AND ITS NOTABLE CHAMPIONS

The World's Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Arizona, held its first event in 1888 and has since become a beloved tradition for both locals and visitors alike. The Prescott Frontier Days®, as it is officially known, is a week-long event thtat features various rodeo competitions, parade, and other western-themed activities held in downtown Prescott, Arizona.

Over the last 136 years, the Prescott rodeo has seen many talented and skilled contestants who have left their mark on the competition's history. One of the most notable rodeo champions is Everett Bowman, who won the All-Around Cowboy title an impressive six times between 1935-1941. Another legendary cowboy, Casey Tibbs, won the saddle bronc riding event four times in the 1950s.

Other notable rodeo champions include Jim Shoulders, a pioneer in bull riding, and Ty Murray, who won the All-Around Cowboy title seven times. Women have also made their mark on the Prescott rodeo, with barrel racer Charmayne James winning the event seven times and becoming one of the most successful rodeo competitors of all time.

The Prescott Frontier Days has also played a significant role in the development of rodeo as a sport. In 1912, the rodeo introduced the concept of timed events, such as steer wrestling and calf roping, which added a new level of excitement and competition to the sport.

Throughout its long history, the Prescott Frontier Days has remained committed to preserving the spirit of the American West and celebrating the traditions of rodeo. Today, the event attracts thousands of visitors each year and continues to be one of the most highly anticipated events in Prescott, Arizona. Learn more at www.WorldsOldestRodeo.com

Welcome from

Mayor Kell Palguta

Welcome to Prescott Valley, the most dynamic community in Central Arizona, with its nearly mile-high elevation, mild weather, four distinct seasons and stunning scenery. Add in Prescott Valley’s proximity to the desert cities 90 miles south, and the offerings of the high country 75 miles north, and you’ll find a lot to love!

As it nears a population of 50,000 people, Prescott Valley has retained the small-town ambiance that attracts so many friendly people. We enjoy many of the amenities of much larger communities while remaining one of the safest areas in the state. The Town has grown on a foundation of volunteers. We hope you’ll get involved with your new community and help us to keep this great atmosphere!

The community’s “points of pride” include the 5,500-seat Findlay Toyota Center, home to the Indoor Football League’s 2022 Champion Northern Arizona Wranglers and the host to top-name concerts and shows, professional bull riding, monster truck shows and other exciting entertainment.

You can venture out to hike and bike on miles of scenic trails and multiuse pathways. Prescott Valley offers more than 300 acres of park lands and open space, an outdoor public swimming pool, 20 multipurpose athletic fields, miles of trails and an award-winning amphitheater. The Town is always looking to improve its 26 beautiful parks. Play, fish, enjoy youth and adult sports leagues, give your pooch a run at the dog park, or simply take some time to soak up the sun.

Visit the historic Fain Park on Lynx Creek, where you can try your hand at gold panning and visit a little bit of Prescott Valley’s early history. Up for a challenge? Hike 900 feet above the community on the Glassford Hill Summit Trail, with the reward of spectacular views of the San Francisco Peaks and other surrounding landmarks.

Don’t forget to enjoy a pleasant meal out at one of our many excellent restaurants and visit local businesses.

Find out more by checking out the Town of Prescott Valley, Prescott Valley Police and Prescott Valley Library Facebook pages and other Town social media; visit the Town of Prescott Valley website at www. prescottvalley-az.gov; and sign up for the OurPV app, available in the app store on your phone.

If you’re a history buff, check out the Prescott Valley Historical Society information, also on our website.

Welcome to your new hometown. We’re glad you’re here!

Health & Medical Care

Yavapai County ranks first out of Arizona’s 15 counties for healthy behaviors, and thanks to a strong network of health care partners and collaborators the community is poised to maintain its position. Nearly 90% of people in the community report being able to see a doctor when needed, according to a 2017 Yavapai County Community Health Services report, the most recent available.

PRESCOTT VALLEY’S RANGE OF CHOICES

Prescott Valley has an array of health care options, starting with a

72-bed acute care hospital. Since opening in 2006, Dignity HealthYavapai Regional Medical Center (YRMC) East has been an excellent example of the area’s commitment to providing good medical care. The hospital provides advanced medical care through a state-ofthe-art environment that includes the Family Birthing Center, the BreastCare Center, the Advanced Wound Care Center and a growing complex of medical specialties and resources.

YRMC PhysicianCare was created in 2009 to provide expert medical care to Greater

Prescott’s growing population from medical clinics including one in Prescott Valley. Services available include family and internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, neurosurgical medicine, orthopedic surgery and pain management.

The town has numerous medical practices, many conveniently located near the hospital along Windsong Drive. You’ll have multiple options for primary care, pediatrics, cardiology, dentistry, optometry, psychiatry, counseling, chiropractic care, IV therapy and other specialties.

Health care is the leading industry for growth in Arizona in terms of the number and quality of jobs, says Lee McPheters, a research professor of economics at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business.

Housing

Choose from a palette of options

Prescott Valley is a thriving community adding new builds all the time but with plenty of existing homes for affordability and sustainability. Its population has expanded from 38,800 in 2010 to its current 50,000 in 2023.

The valley has been inhabited by indigenous tribes for millennia and became a hub for mining and ranching in the mid-19th century, but its residential development didn’t begin in earnest until 1966, so its homes are relatively new; more than half were built in 1990 or later.

Smaller and manufactured homes built for affordable residential and retirement living predominate in the western core of the town, while master-planned communities and subdivisions fan out to the east, north and south.

More rural neighborhoods are found primarily north of AZ-89A. All are near convenient shopping and employment areas.

The median sale price for Prescott Valley homes in early 2023 was around $450,000. This is about $20,000 higher than the same time last year even though days spent on the market and the supply of available homes have both increased; a testament to the town’s enduring appeal and home values.

In Prescott Valley, you can live in a classic ranch or craftsman-style home, mission- or Tuscan-style charmer, luxurious custom property, upscale apartment or anything else you’ve been dreaming of.

One way you can begin your journey home is by searching the Prescott Valley Chamber of Commerce’s member directory for qualified, talented professionals at www.pvchamber.org/members.

Prescott Valley Neighborhoods

Every street has a sense of place

Neighborhoods are the building block of every community, and Prescott Valley takes particular pride in theirs, whether they’re part of an HOA or not. There are too many to include a complete list but we wanted to give you a sampling of your options.

PRESCOTT VALLEY UNITS

Prescott Valley’s earliest development and many neighborhoods fall within this cross-shaped area in the heart of today’s community, with Mountain Valley Park near its center. This area is filled with established neighborhoods and local businesses that have stood the test of time and form the heart of the town.

The Civic Center, which contains the Prescott Valley Public Library, municipal offices and Civic Center Park, is tucked into its southeast side.

GRANVILLE

Prescott Valley’s largest masterplanned community straddles Glassford Hill Road north of Long Look Drive up to AZ-89A. It has several parks, a clubhouse, gym, basketball, tennis and pickleball courts, homes for every kind of household and is just north of Findlay Toyota Center, the Entertainment District and surrounding commercial development.

STONERIDGE

The only master-planned community south of AZ-69 is built into the ridges of the Bradshaw Mountains, offering an 18-hole championship golf course, several parks and a variety of housing styles.

PRONGHORN RANCH

Built under the high desert vistas north of AZ-89A, this community is built around a clubhouse with a fantastic array of amenities for residents and has expansive lots for families to spread out over.

Dining — The options are great and growing. The town is peppered with locally owned diners and cafes and restaurants serving everything from sushi to barbecue. Authentic Mexican cuisine, spicy Thai feasts and meals overlooking a golf course are just a few of the choices. A brewery and a wine bar provide excellent libations too.

Day trips — When you’re ready to hit the road, there are plenty of nearby attractions so enchanting you could easily spend more than a day in any one of them!

When a community can take ownership of its direction, so many great things can happen. Here in Prescott Valley those great things are happening.

History

From Lonesome Valley to Prescott Valley, Community has Adapted to Change

Archaeological evidence of human settlement in Prescott Valley dates back to the year 800. Between 1050 and 1300 A.D., a large mesa pueblo existed on the south side of Lynx Creek in what is now Fain Park, for which large stone slabs from nearby granite outcroppings were used as the foundation. The main structure included about 32 rooms with another 21 outlying rooms.

The remains of this structure were discovered by gold miners in 1864 and are now known as the Fitzmaurice Ruins. It is the largest Native American archeological site in the Prescott area.

The miners who discovered these ruins also brought the first economic activity to the area. They included Thomas Barlow-Massicks, who created hydraulic works, built a dam across the creek and a three-story mansion that still stands near the dam in Fain Park.

In the 1880s Army Lt. William

Glassford used the valley's tallest hill for a mirror-based signaling system, to warn other officers of incoming Apache raids.

As the gold rush continued, ranchers began establishing themselves in the grassland to the north of the creek in what was known as “Lonesome Valley.” The Fain family arrived in the 1870s, and their holdings grew until the Rafter Eleven Ranch covered a huge area from Granite Mountain in the west to Mingus Mountain in the east.

The family kicked off residential development in the area in the 1960s, renaming it Prescott Valley and hiring Robert Loos and Leonard Hoffman to pursue buyers in the Midwest, focusing on the retirement market.

A 1978 incorporation vote by its more than 1,500 residents led to the Town of Prescott Valley’s incorporation, and it hasn’t stopped growing since but still honors its rural roots and history.

Glassford Hill was formed by a volcanic eruption about 12 million years ago.

Yavapai Humane Society Welcomes You to Prescott Valley!

If you haven’t already figured it out… Prescott Valley is a huge animal loving community! It’s the perfect place to grab a leash and your furry best friend and hit some of the many dog friendly trails!

Before heading out anywhere with your pup, make sure he has a clean bill of health from your veterinarian to prevent any injuries and avoid any issues which might arise from exercising. Prescott Valley’s elevation is just about 5,000 feet and just as it takes us humans a bit of time to adjust, it’s going to take your dog or cat some time too. And, with our elevation we also get some extreme weather, with exceptionally hot summers and snowy winters, so always remember to check the temperature before heading out. Our monsoon season usually starts around the first part of July and runs through mid-September where we get extreme thunderstorms which can come on suddenly, accompanied by strong winds, so keep that in mind when heading out with your pup during this time of year.

Getting proper physical stimulation helps dogs keep their muscles and joints healthy, maintain a healthy weight, and helps work off energy that might be pent up from being inside. Start your dog out with a nice walk around the neighborhood and work up to a longer hike. Just like with us humans, you don’t want to jump right into a 3-mile hike without building up your endurance and muscles, so make

your walks a little bit longer each day and add in a hill or two. When you’re ready to hit the trails, there are a number of them in Prescott Valley and Prescott too. Lynx Creek Trail is a nice easy trail to start with and the Glassford Summit Trail is also nice (a little more challenging) but has spectacular scenery. Remember to bring potty bags, water for both of you, and be sure to keep an eye on your dog(s) to make sure they are not becoming overheated or exhausted. And remember that while it’s tempting to let your dog off its leash, it is AZ law that your dog remains on a leash that is a maximum of 6 feet long. This is for the safety of not only your dog, but others you may come across.

Taking a walk or hike with your dog is not only good for them, but also for you. It’s a fabulous way to explore the beauty of Prescott Valley (and all of Northern Arizona) and enjoy the great outdoors. Other benefits include getting exercise and it’s a great time to bond with your furry friend. You can even add in some training time by socializing them with other people and dogs.

So, grab a leash and your dog and head out for a nice walk together! It’ll do you both good! After your walk you can stop at one of the many dog friendly dining establishments like Jen’s 7th Ave

Café. They always have their own dogs there and have an outdoor play area for your dog and others to play while you eat! Gabby’s Grill, Lonesome Valley Brewing and Backburner Family Restaurant also have pet friendly patios. More restaurants and pet friendly places can be found on BringFido.com.
