History
Most of all, you will enjoy genuine Western hospitality, heritage, tradition and an outdoor lifestyle that makes Prescott the “Best Destination in Arizona for Nature Lovers,” according to Expedia Viewfinder (August, 2017). PRESCOTT ARIZONA was first settled with the discovery of gold in Granite Creek. The City was founded in 1864. President Abraham Lincoln named Prescott the first Territorial Capital of Arizona, a distinction the City held from 1864-67 and again from 1877-1889. In 1891, Prescott became the Yavapai County Seat, and it remains so to this day. In 1888 Prescott held its first rodeo. To this day, it is known as the World’s Oldest Rodeo. In 1901, a fire leveled the infamous Whiskey Row bars, and the county courthouse.
American Ranch Rd
Notable figures from Prescott’s past include Doc Holiday and his mistress, Big Nose Kate, who frequented the Palace and other Whiskey Row establishments. Senator Barry Goldwater hailed from Prescott. His family owned a general merchandise store on Cortez Street in the downtown, and their name is still on the building. Western history is not all Prescott has to offer. Prescott is nestled in the central highlands of Arizona, at a mile-high elevation. The city is surrounded by the 1.25 million acre Prescott National Forest, and boasts five lakes, and over 450 miles of trails.

here's a warm, welcoming feeling wherever you roam the historic downtown area. Locals will greet you with genuine smile and “Nice to see you.” In the
center of town, looming large over a plaza ringed by century-old trees is the much photographed granite Courthouse. It’s the focal point for many festivals and events from late April through October.
A Special Place DESIGNATED AS ARIZONA’S CHRISTMAS CITY, during winter months, the area around the Courthouse is home for unequaled holiday festivities. You won't want to miss any of them. Festivities begin in late November. The first is the colorful Holiday Light Parade, where elaborate decorated floats and holiday music will have you smiling. Ultimately, you may wind up at the community bonfire, just up the street at Mile High Middle School. Then the first week of December features the colorful daytime Christmas Parade, with more than 100 entries. It involves almost everyone in town. If you’re lucky enough to be here in early December, you’ll beam when the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza lights turn the dark into a kaleidoscope of 27

holiday colors. This year will be the 64th annual lighting. You’ll join local students, townspeople and visitors in singing traditional Christmas carols. Just up the street two blocks, you’ll enjoy a Frontier Christmas staged by the Sharlot Hall Museum. You’ll be transported back to how pioneers celebrated Christmas. 100 local musicians – students, local musicians, churches, the community and visitors- during the melodious Acker Musical Showcase the second week of December. Businesses downtown open doors to performers, who sing, play instruments and entertain – and invite you to join in. The 54-mile Prescott Circle Trail will challenge you. A complete list of the Mile High Trail System –70 plus miles of it– is available at the at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center on Goodwin Street south of Courthouse Plaza. www. prescott-az.gov. Don’t miss the Granite Dells, where unique rock formations thrust out of the ground and tempt hikers and rock-climbers. If you’re into birding, Prescott’s the place. More than 360 species of birds inhabit the area. The Prescott Audubon Society www.prescottaudubon.org can provide full details about where to go and when.
Prescott has Water & Parks If you want water activities, you’ll enjoy the three local lakes— Willow and Watson, both on the northwest edge of the City. The third is Goldwater. Maintained by the City of Prescott, the 15-acre lake is located in lush pine forests surrounded by rugged mountain areas. The City of Prescott has boat and bicycle rentals available www.prescottoutdoors.com, 928-925-1410. Two others—Lynx Lake and Granite Basin Lake—are just outside the City limits. If you like kayaking and canoeing— and fishing—you can visit any of these lakes. Of course, all have picnicking and camping sites. Want to spend time in a park? The City boasts 16 of them, all with amenities that guarantee memorable times. Some are purely recreational—walking and exercising and picnicking. Others are specialized. Some are athletic parks—softball, baseball, soccer, tennis, pickleball, basketball, skateboards, rink skating and the like. One in particular— McCasland Willow Creek Park features one of only four in the U.S. custom-created Dog Parks. Canines are the most welcome visitors. A complete list with locations is available on the City website www.prescott-az.gov/services/parks.

historical walking tour brings Prescott’s rich history and heritage to you in about an hour long walk around the famed Courthouse Plaza in the heart of our downtown. Be sure to check back with us in 2018, as we plan to double the number of sites on the Heritage Trail, and connect it with the City’s Greenways Trail system. We will also launch the Hunt for History, engaging youngsters to explore Prescott heritage in their own special way. Also, be sure to visit our area museums, including the Smoki, Sharlot Hall, and Phippen. Day Trips
rescott’s the perfect place from which to launch memorable day trips, especially to the nearby Verde Valley and adjacent Red Rock Country. It’s only an hour away. Among the favorites are the following:
1010 South Main Street, Cottonwood, Arizona 86326 928-634-7593 • visitcottonwoodaz.org
Cottonwood, The Heart of Arizona Wine Country Located in the Verde Valley, Cottonwood is ideally situated between the heat of the desert and the coolers temperatures of Arizona’s high country. Old Town retains the charm of those early beginnings, and the Verde Valley Wine Trail is not to be missed!
Verde Canyon Railroad
Postcard-perfect scenery, wildlife viewing and first-class service during a leisurely four-hour train ride through the red rock Canyon area. First-class cars boast comfortable seating, complimentary appetizers and a full-service bar. Everyone has access to open-air viewing cars where photographic opportunities abound.
The Blazin’ M Ranch Western Dinner Theatre
Tucked along the banks of the scenic Verde River, this popular family destination is a great activity. It is timed perfectly after you finish your ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad. The ranch activities include a shooting gallery, roping lessons, Old-Time photos, a saloon, museum and unique gift shops. Top it off with a chuckwagon-style meal, followed by a live Western stage production with cowboy comedy, storytelling and award-winning musicians!
Town of Jerome
Stroll the winding switchback streets of what was once known as the “wickedest town in the West.” At one time the fourth largest town in Arizona, Jerome was a mining community founded a few years after the Civil War on the side of 5,200 foot high Cleopatra Hill. The mines are now abandoned, but Jerome thrives as a popular tourist community with dozens of unusual shops, boutiques, exhibits, museums and restaurants.
