The Exceptional Care I Was Looking for Was Right Here Joanne Sheehy Shares Her Story

“Excruciating.” That’s how Joanne Sheehy describes the pain she felt prior to her anterior hip replacement at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West.

“My left hip was bone on bone,” the Sun City West resident says. “I could barely walk, and even getting into bed was painful. I enjoy being active and involved in various social activities, yet it became almost impossible for me to do anything.”

After first seeking care at a hospital in the East Valley (where she had been a patient on several occasions over a span of 20 years), Joanne experienced multiple delays in scheduling her surgery with another provider.

Her suffering was becoming unbearable. She had endured debilitating pain for months on end and was desperate for answers.

Exasperated, one day she mentioned her plight to friends Gina Ore, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Sun Health Foundation, and Bonnie Robinett, the Foundation’s Donor Relations/ Stewardship Manager. Without hesitation they recommended Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center and The CORE Institute.

Joanne says she was astonished to learn the care she needed was right here in the West Valley, close to home.

From that point, the wheels were in motion to connect Joanne to the care she urgently needed. She made an appointment with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Paul Sousa, who worked together with the hospital to promptly schedule her surgery.

The results were life-changing! Joanne recovered beautifully from her anterior hip replacement; a state-of-the-art procedure performed with advanced medical equipment and surgical expertise.

Even right after surgery, she experienced minimal pain and was discharged the next day. One week later she sat with friends on her patio. Three weeks later, she was walking and even driving to a picnic. Within a month, she was back to doing everything she loves to do, including water aerobics.

“I had a wonderful experience at Del Webb. Everyone was very attentive and prompt. I’m so grateful to the hospital, to the staff, and to my surgeon above all,” Joanne says. “I have my life back.”

Elated, Joanne says she felt like she had uncovered a secret about this medical oasis in the West Valley.

“My gratitude extends to Gina and Bonnie, as well, for helping me find the healthcare I needed. They represent Sun Health Foundation’s genuine caring for one another and our community through their passion for philanthropy. Nancy Urbach Her Wellspring of Happiness

Nancy Urbach says people are noticing she’s smiling a lot these days.

The Sun City West resident reveals: “It’s because I’m happy knowing I found the perfect gift. Being true to myself is the key to happiness and the best gift I could ever receive.”

After she separated from her husband, Nancy took time to adjust and focus on herself.

“I needed to get to know me again after years of doing what’s expected throughout my life rather than what’s right for me. No one really knows you better than you know yourself.”

Since then, Nancy has been on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment focusing on her physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. She started attending an enlightenment group where she discovered her authentic and spiritual self by surrounding herself with people who share her energy and desire to explore the possibilities and choices to live a fulfilled life.

After suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome for several years, Nancy finally found relief from treatments that included alternative medicine therapies. With an enhanced focus on her health, she includes exercise in her daily routine such as stretches, jumping on a trampoline and using the iTeraCare device that promotes healing by emitting energy at the cellular level. These methods help her increase flexibility, immunity, blood flow, and boost her lymphatic system.

With all of these elements in sync, Nancy says she enjoys a happy life. And she smiles all the time. She defines happiness as “being comfortable with who you are and where you are in life and feeling at peace in the areas of your life that are important to you. I’m finding more joy in connecting with the special people I’m around.”

“Self-discovery is a continuous action. We are meant to be everchanging and growing through the cycles of life.”

This includes the peace of mind Nancy now has for her health and wellbeing as a member of Sun Health At Home. The program offers her the assurance of knowing she has guaranteed lifetime access to healthcare and support should her health needs ever change.

Since tapping in to her wellspring of happiness, Nancy continually replenishes it by doing things she loves, including enjoying friendships with those who share her passion for spirituality and being generous with her time to help her friends in times of need. “Friends have always been so important to me,” she says.

She also enjoys paying it forward by sharing her experience with others.

Nancy has a website, NancyBU.com, that inspires people to view the world with a positive perspective. She writes a newsletter and blog to share messages of inspiration. Plus, she’s writing a book, the culmination of her years of introspection.

“My purpose in writing this is to help people live life happier, more fulfilled, and with more control of the choices they make in life,” she says.

Her happiness has created a rippling effect that helps others find theirs. People have told her: “The light you shine makes people feel good.”

Colleen McKemie Lighting Up Every Room

Colleen McKemie lights up every room she enters with her cheery disposition. She not only feels happy; she spreads happiness. One can’t help but feel happier around her illuminating smile and excitement for life.

Upon meeting her, it’s hard to believe Colleen has known the heartbreak of divorce, the challenge of being a working mom raising two kids alone, and the sorrow of losing her second husband to dementia. Through it all, her faith and family have inspired her to have a positive outlook and choose happiness which, she finds among other things, in giving back to others.

“Growing up, I came from a very loving family — my parents, brothers, and I were very close. My mother and father encouraged me every step of the way and had a great philosophy: ‘Think of the other person.’”

Colleen says she inherited her happy disposition from both parents as well as from her great grandmother who taught her to be open minded, willing to accept life’s changes, and to look forward to what’s ahead.

Through the years, Colleen has navigated many changes while maintaining a positive outlook. She supported her children by working in the loan department of a bank and later at an insulation manufacturing plant where

her duties ranged from being a marketing assistant to driving a forklift.

Her second marriage blended two families, doubling the love. Their sharing and caring for one another also doubled Colleen’s happiness. When her husband developed dementia, he spent his final months in a residential care facility.

“During that time, I was in training to live alone,” she says.

After his passing, she relied on her faith and positive outlook to help her through her grief and find joy again.

“I love my life,” Colleen says. “I’m very happy and active and never sit alone and feel sorry for myself. I wake up every day saying it’s going to be a good day. And every day is a good day.”

There’s no time for sitting. Not only does she enjoy visiting her four children (including two bonus children, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren), Colleen belongs to two book clubs, loves bridge and knitting, and is very involved in her church.

All the while, Colleen embodies her family creed to think of others by being involved in philanthropy. In

addition to making charitable contributions to the Generosity for Generations Campaign, she’s involved in PEO and has been invited to join another family, Sun Health Foundation’s Women of Distinction.

This community of women leaders helps to ensure that healthcare resources make the greatest impact in the lives of West Valley residents.

And, Colleen says, that makes her very happy.

Are My Estate Planning Documents in Need of a CheckUp?

Your typical simple “estate plan” often includes a Will, a Trust, and Powers of Attorney. While you may have created estate planning documents in the past, it is usually a good practice to look back and confirm that your documents were properly created and meet your present needs. If you are not sure if your estate documents are valid, you may wish to check the Arizona statutes or contact an attorney. The following are some questions you may wish to ask yourself to start with as you begin to re-evaluate your estate plan documents:

Wills

„ Does your Will reflect your current beneficiary intentions and how they will receive their benefits?

„ Is having a Will alone sufficient to satisfy your estate planning needs?

„ Note: Blended families are prevalent today, and with a blended family, your Will may not be sufficient to ensure the children from your first marriage are provided for after the death of your current spouse.

„ Are you comfortable with your beneficiaries having to go through the time and expense of probate?

„ Did you name an appropriate personal representative?

„ Did you create the separate list of personal property items referenced in the Will?

„ Did you tell your personal representative where your Will is kept?

Trusts

„ Does your Trust accurately reflect your current wishes?

„ Has the Trust been funded?

„ Have you selected a proper alternate trustee capable of handling their fiduciary duties or whose appointment is likely to lead to family conflict?

„ If your Trust required the establishment of subtrusts after the death of the initial spouse, did you set up those sub-trusts?

„ Has there been a change in your assets, beneficiaries, or successor trustees that requires an amendment or restatement?

Powers of Attorney

With regard to Powers of Attorney, one of the most common problems is that people wait too long to create such a document. That is, people fail to create a Power of Attorney while they can. For those that have timely created a Power of Attorney, ask yourself:

„ Does your Power of Attorney have the right people identified as your agents? Are they in the order you wish to have them?

„ Is the power granted effective immediately, or is it a springing power that only goes into effect upon incapacity?

„ Have you appointed an attorney-in-fact who is capable of handling the responsibilities?

While the above are only a sampling of questions, asking yourself these types of questions is a great first step to making sure you are putting your heirs in a position to succeed.

Volunteer Finds Her Happy Place

Linda Haddon loves volunteering at the Sun Health Resale Shop in Sun City West, especially any opportunity to evoke a smile or laughter from the shoppers she meets. People even stop by the Shop to see her because of her warm, cheerful personality.

“I like to joke around with shoppers and get them to smile,” she says. “It might be a spark of something they don’t get any place else. Making them happy makes me happy.”

Her 38-year career in funeral services has given Linda perspective on her own happiness as she helped others during their darkest days of grief and dealt with her own. When she was just 33, she lost her husband to cancer after being married only three-and-a-half years. Linda was devastated.

“One day I realized I’ve got to move forward, but it took time and sheer determination. Later on, my experience with pain actually helped me better relate to those who were feeling pain. I was able to support people through that time.

“Helping them turn their lives around made me happy.”

Throughout her career, Linda served the needs of families in a variety of ways, including helping with prearrangements at funeral homes and a casket company. She founded three widow grief support groups and she served as counselor. Linda also became a certified Life Celebrant delivering celebratory eulogies.

“Dealing with sadness and with people who are really in pain takes everything inside yourself,” she says. “You walk beside them and hold their hand and sometimes you don’t say anything; you’re just sharing their burden.”

Linda chooses happy and volunteering adds to her Happiness Factor. She not only loves helping shoppers find what they want, she feels good knowing purchases are actually helping them and others long after they leave the Shop.

Proceeds from sales go directly to benefiting healthcare services at Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers — services that Linda and her husband have experienced firsthand.

“My husband, Jim, had a heart attack last December and was treated at Banner Del E. Webb in Sun City West. Another time he underwent kidney surgery at Banner Boswell in Sun City. Both times his experience was unbelievable; he received the best care in the world,” Linda says.

After her retirement, people have continued to seek her out as a celebrant because of the special way she tailors the “experience-based” services with a “wow” factor.

For Linda, happiness comes through her professional and personal experiences. “Everyone has a choice every day. You can be happy, or you can be miserable,” she says. “It’s a choice you have to make.”

Today, Jim is doing well, and they continue doing what they love to do together, including motorcycling.

“Before moving to Arizona from out of state, we had never experienced such wonderful healthcare as we do here in the West Valley. To watch people come in to this Shop and know they have access to this superior quality — it’s mindboggling,” Linda says.

Something else she loves about volunteering — the atmosphere of volunteers and staff: “We’re like sisters and brothers, and we support one another.”

“You can’t go through life without caring about others,” Linda says. “Being a volunteer is the perfect opportunity to do just that. I’ve seen a lot of sad stuff in my life. If I can volunteer at the Sun Health Resale Shop and bring happiness to someone, I’m going to do it.”

Elevating the Patient Experience in Cancer Care: Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center

Striving for Healthier, Happier Lives

Over recent years medical care, which was once physician-centered, has become more patient-focused. While care used to be delivered at the convenience of the doctor, now it is provided at the convenience of the patient.

This shift has redefined the patient-doctor relationship. Patients are active participants, collaborating with healthcare professionals as partners in their care to optimize outcomes.

Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center is among the leaders in a patient-centered, team-oriented approach to cancer care and education. They not only embrace this model; they elevate the patient experience. Even before a cancer diagnosis, the medical teams at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center demonstrate their caring by increasing awareness in the community on ways to stay healthy and prevent cancer.

“What we like to do is connect with people when they are healthy to increase their awareness of ways to prevent cancer and detect cancer early,” explains Dr. Phillip J. Koo, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging and Physician Executive, Northwest Region, Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.

“That’s why partnering with Sun Health Foundation is so crucial,” Dr. Koo adds.

Together they provide education on the importance of mammography, colonoscopy, endoscopy, and other tests through education programs such as Coffee with Gina & Friends and Sun Health Wellness.

“We know people want to live their lives to the fullest, so we want to make the screening process easier, more convenient, and seamless. If there are suspicions, we create pathways to get to a definitive diagnosis earlier,” Dr. Koo says.

New medical equipment such as the new robotic endoscopy at Banner Boswell Medical Center is one example of how advancements in technology are facilitating diagnosis for patients in the earliest possible stages. Made possible thanks to community support through Sun Health Foundation, this technology is a non-invasive new way to diagnose lung cancer and other lung diseases with fewer complications and pinpoint accuracy.

You’ve received a cancer diagnosis. Now what?

Connecting everyone together to provide multidisciplinary care is vitally important.

“Understandably, it’s a flood of worry, concern, and stress for the patient and family,” Dr. Koo says. “Then it’s a deluge of information and appointments. We want to make this time less daunting and more efficient for patients through process improvement and resources such as patient navigators.”

„ The patient navigator helps coordinate next steps in your care process. This navigator is usually a medical assistant or nurse.

„ Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, psycho-oncologists, nutritionists, patient navigators, genetic counselors, and social workers discuss each case together and prioritize your goals for care. What’s important to you? How do you want to live your life?

„ Your plan of care is developed, and treatment can begin. That plan may include clinical trials when appropriate. And in certain situations, rather than you going to separate appointments, the specialists involved in your care come to you during one appointment.

„ Nutritionists, psycho-oncologists and social workers also are vital members of the team to complement the wholistic, patient-centered approach to care that considers every aspect of your health and wellbeing.

„ New developments in cancer care are continually occurring. Always with their focus on quality of life and innovations in care, Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center is developing a Survivorship transition program. Still in development, the program will continue to provide team-based support to help you progress from having an

acute disease to having a chronic disease. At this stage, the disease is not ruling your life and can be managed long term while you focus on living your life. This program will further enhance the patient experience with the goal to impact outcomes.

Banner MD Anderson’s collaborative, patientcentered model of care prioritizes your health, quality of life, and strives to add more of life’s happier moments.

The expertise of medical professionals, combined with technology innovations, contribute to improved outcomes as well as the patient experience. At Banner Boswell Medical Center, more than 200 ION robotic-assisted bronchoscopies (most advanced technology in Arizona) already have been performed since June 2022. Additionally, more than 1,400 thoracic robotic surgeries have been performed with outstanding results.
