Litchfield Park has one of the few original “Main Street” districts in the metro area, remaining from the city’s origins in the 1920s. Phoenix Magazine recognized the city’s main street as “The Best Street Time Forgot.” The magnificent palm and orange trees that line the wide streets were integrated into the urban design as part of a master planned community years ago.

Since 1964, Phoenix Raceway has been the premier motorsports venue in the Southwest. Founded as an openwheel racing mecca, Phoenix Raceway is proud to once again host the Verizon IndyCar Series on April 28-29. The Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix will anchor the Ultimate Open-Wheel Weekend that will also feature the USAC Silver Crown Series and the Quarter Midget races as well as the Vintage Desert Classic. Some of Phoenix Raceway’s most legendary drivers got their start in the USAC Silver Crown Series, including current NASCAR team owner and three-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Champion Tony Stewart, NASCAR on FOX broadcaster and four-time NASCAR Cup Champion Jeff Gordon and A.J. Foyt, Verizon IndyCar Series team owner and winner of the first-ever race held at Phoenix Raceway in 1964. The series will also bring their Quarter Midget division for a full day of racing action ahead of the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix held under the lights. Also part of the upcoming IndyCar weekend, the Vintage Desert Classic will feature some of the most legendary cars in open-wheel racing history on display both on and off the track. Featured cars include the No. 4 TrueValue/STP March Indy car driven by Roberto Guerrero that won at Phoenix in 1987 and later won the Indianapolis 500 that same year. Also on display will be the last Indy car that Jim Clark ever drove in competition, the 1967 Rolla Vollstedt 67B Bryant Heating and Cooling Special Ford. After a long and hot summer for fans of ZOOMTOWN, U.S.A.Ž Phoenix International Raceway, fall will be upon us and before we know it, NASCAR will be back in the Valley of the Sun in November. As the new enhanced race format plays out throughout the 2017 season, Phoenix remains a crucial stop as the semi-final race in the NASCAR Playoff schedule. The one-mile oval has proven to be one of the most unpredictable and deciding races for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. As the final race in the Round of 8, Phoenix Raceway has proven that

drivers will do anything to make it to the Championship race – and we do mean anything. In 2016, NASCAR added the drama, tension and excitement of the then-Chase format to both the NASCAR XFINITY Series as well as the Camping World Truck Series. That means that come November, Phoenix will once again be the penultimate race in the Playoffs for all of the top-three series in NASCAR. Now that is a weekend of racing that all will want to see! This fall, Phoenix Raceway welcomes back Can-Am, manufacturer of world-renowned motorized recreational vehicles and engines, as the title sponsor for the popular race on Veterans’ Day weekend. The Can-Am 500 weekend will kick off on Friday, November 10 as we go racing under the lights with the Lucas Oil 150 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. That race will be the 27th running of the Truck Phoenix Series at Phoenix Raceway, the track that hosted the International Raceway first-ever truck race in 1995. As Daniel Suárez proved 125 S. Monument Hill Monument Hill is located at 115th Ave. and Baseline Road in Avondale, AZ Period of significance: 1850-1874. The surveying marker of the Gila and Salt River Meridian is located on Monument Hill. Ever since 1851, this has been the center point used by the state to measure the land in Arizona. The federal government recognized this point for measuring the boundary between the United States and Mexico after the MexicanAmerican War ended. The first survey conducted in 1867, involved the first 36 miles of Arizona. Up until 1874, this was the epicenter of all surveying in Arizona for property deeds. Baseline Rd is indeed the baseline of the east-west survey line. The marker was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 2002.

• Carry a bandana in your pack. They are light-weight and can be used for numerous situations. If you are beginning to suffer from excessive heat, wet the bandana and place on the nape of the neck and/or the forehead. This will help to cool you down quickly. Seek shade under a tree or bush. • Map miles are not the same as effort miles. On good trails, hikers can go up to 2.5 MPH. On most trails, count on no more than 1 or 1.5 MPH, especially if admiring the views, cooling off under Palo Verde trees, taking pictures, etc. • Going uphill takes more time. A 1,000’ climb equals a mile of effort and adds 10 or 20 minutes. Downhill is no faster if the trail is bad. • Be wary of rattlesnakes, particularly at night and when it is relatively cool. • Carry something to signal with – a police whistle, signal mirror, and matches for a fire, a colored panel – to make you visible. • Be considerate – leave no trace.
