Surprise L
The Playground of the West Valley 7/
ocated along U.S. 60, northwest of Phoenix, Surprise is one of the fastest-growing communities in the U.S. Today, Surprise is a 74-square-mile city on the move. Flanked by one of Arizona’s largest mountain preserves, and situated in the saguaro-dotted Sonoran Desert on the northwestern edge of the Valley of the Sun, it’s no “surprise” that Surprise was named Arizona’s fastest- growing city four times in recent years. Even the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers decided to take up residence here. The once sleepy square-mile farming community surprised just about everyone when it successfully courted the two teams away from their Florida training homes. The Surprise Stadium, Spring Training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals along with a Regional Library, aquatic center, tennis and racquet complex, youth baseball complex, Mark Coronado Park and Surprise Community Park are centerpieces of this new square mile plus downtown development, putting Surprise well on its way to becoming the playground of the West Valley. Looking for some cool and affordable summer fun? Surprise’s 10,562-square-foot Aquatics Center takes swimming beyond the box. It includes a 4,700-square-foot water play area with zero depth entry, eight-lane competitive pool, diving well with two 1-meter boards, two slides, splash pads, vortex whirlpool, classroom, concessions and more.

Pickleball Tourist Craze
T
ony, a Canadian tourist, said the main reason he visits Surprise each year for his winter vacation is the great weather, reasonable hotels and the awesome pickleball courts in Surprise Community Park! Surprise Community Park alone has over 16 courts. The courts are lighted and open from 6am to 10pm.
What is Pickleball? Pickleball is the fastest growing
sport for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple, the equipment is minimal, and the game can be enjoyed by beginners to those who enjoy a fast-paced, competitive game. In short, pickleball combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Pickleball is played on a badminton-size court, which is a shorter court than a tennis court with a lower net than what is used in tennis. Pickleball is played with a plastic ball and paddle. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association there are more than 2.5 million pickleball participants in the United States.

The Maricopa Trail
The Maricopa Trail offers visitors to Surprise a vast area of Sonoran Desert and mountain hiking with easy access. It lies at the far west of Surprise and connects to White Tank Mountain Regional Park, which features an additional 25 miles of excellent shared-use trails.
Maricopa County is home to one of the largest regional park systems in the United States. Ten parks in the system circle the Phoenix metropolitan area, preserving approximately 120,000 acres.
Trails
Hiking
The Maricopa Trail is an unfinished 242-mile (389 km) trail located within Maricopa County and connecting the major regional and municipal parks in and around the Phoenix metropolitan area. A loop trail encircling much of the urbanized area, the trail also consists of four spurs that will connect the loop with outlying mountain parks in the region. The trail crosses the U.S. 60 in Surprise, and approximately 15 miles of the trail run west of the Loop 303. Conceptualized in 1997 by the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department, the Maricopa Trail was envisioned as a pedestrian beltway that would connect nine of the department’s 10 regional parks, linking them with the city of Phoenix’s South Mountain Park and encouraging their use by the area’s residents. The trail incorporates existing portions of the Sun Circle Trail, the National Trail in South Mountain Park, portions of the trails within White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Cave Creek Regional Park and pathways already developed along the McMicken corridor in Surprise. Construction on new segments of the trail began in 2006 and has brought the total length of the existing corridors to approximately 80 miles (130 km).

bout the petroglyphs of White Tank Mountains ancient Arizonans pecked hundreds of figures and symbols on the rock faces of the White Tank Mountains. Some may approach 10,000 years old. All have withstood sun, rain, and vandals for 700 to 800 years or more. Visitors are not permitted to make "tombstone rubbings" of the petroglyphs. It doesn't work and it will erode the dark areas, making the petroglyph dimmer. Look at and photograph these figures and symbols of history, but please do not touch the petroglyphs because skin oils can also damage them.
