5 BEST GOLF COURSES / Phoenix Arizona

Phoenix By: David Wheeler

Golfers looking for a weekend getaway that boasts both sunny conditions and beautiful golf courses should look no further than Phoenix, Arizona. The sun shines down on area golf courses for an average of 330 days per year– making it the prime destination for travelers and new residents of Phoenix, golfers alike, looking for courses to raise their game. When traveling to the heart of the desert consider checking out these golf courses in Phoenix: TPC SCOTTSDALE What this golf course doesn’t offer in savings (a round of golf can be upwards of $299) it does offer in playability and popularity. TPC Scottsdale is located just a few miles northeast of Phoenix and is the best-attended golf course on the PGA Tour. Known for its rowdy crowd and heart stopping loud holes, TPC Scottsdale is also the course where Tiger Woods sank a hole-in-one among a cheerful crowd in 1997. The golf course isn’t the prettiest that you’ll ever see but it just may be the most exciting with island-greens that offer great risk and reward options along the water. ARIZONA BILTMORE GOLF CLUB With sweeping views of the Phoenix mountain preserve the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club has a long history of greatness. Many famous golfers have walked the course including US Presidents, Foreign Heads of State, corporate leaders and Hollywood celebrities. The Arizona Biltmore Golf Club offers two championship golf courses that were built in the late 14

1920s. The Links Course offers a par 71 over 6,300 yards and is the more recent golf course. The Adobe Course is also a par 71 with more than a traditional style of golf course at just over 6,430 yards. GRAYHAWK GOLF CLUB If you are looking for a different kind of course consider the Grayhawk Golf Club that was once a staple spot for tour pros. The course offers excellent service and a laid back vibe as classic rock music flanks the practice range. Known for its dramatic green where golfers have to walk over a swinging bridge on the 11th hole, the Grayhawk Golf Club has plenty of character for those looking for a great day of golf. Known well for its dining options, including Phil’s Grill named after Phil Mickelson, the Grayhawk Golf Club is an easy choice for golfing travelers looking for a great golfing spot. WE-KO-PA GOLF CLUB Known for its two layouts that are carved over ridges and through canyons, the We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is a beautiful course that is of superb design. Golfers will weave and wind throughout the course and enjoy play over mountain slopes as well. The We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is located on tribal land east of Scottsdale and is owned by the Fort McDowell Yavapai nation. It offers courses that fit any player: from those who have trouble finding the tee to those more experienced players that will be challenged by area bunkers. The lovely views of the area mountains and cacti forest beautifully flanks the course making for a great day of golf as well. RAVEN GOLF CLUB PHOENIX This award winning golf course has been recognized by top golfing institutions as one of the best daily fee

golf properties. Phoenix South Mountain shadows the course that offers championship holes and world class amenities. The large practice facility is enough to bring you here but the beautiful greens and course layout will keep you coming back. Raven Golf Club in Phoenix offers a wide range of playability as well as top notch dining and special events. There are plenty of great golf courses in the Phoenix area to keep you coming back for more on a quarterly basis. Consider visiting one of these popular courses that rank well with area golfers as well as tourists in order to fully experience all that Phoenix has to offer. Make sure to check out these 5 golf courses in Phoenix the next time you are in the area.

By Frank Fristensky, Central European Travel specialist and travel guide. Durango, Colorado, USA

Why Travel to Central Europe?

Central Europe is coming alive as one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations. The former Eastern Bloc countries were not a travel destination for most Americans and other Westerners during the more than 40 years of communist rule (1948-1989). Today the Iron Curtain is history. But for many Americans, Central Europe is still a mysterious place. The Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia, along with others, experienced unmatched political and historical changes in all aspects of life. Central European countries are blossoming since the end of communism. The centuriesold castles and chateaux are restored and are dominating the beautiful and lush countryside like hundreds of years ago again. The sound of music can be heard not

18

only by visiting an opera or concert halls, but from small venues around the countries. Galleries and museums are presenting national treasures that were locked in the basements for many years. The local breweries, wineries and culinary establishments are proudly offering their specialties to their customers. The capitals and the country regions are offering many astonishing historical and architectural treasures that are part of the World Heritage Sites (UNESCO). You may experience some of the WW II concentration camps not only by visiting these sites but hearing the stories of the survivors of these atrocities. Changing the Paradigm for Commercial Air Service in NORTHERN ARIZONA

Essentials Air Service

We are pleased to announce new Essential Air Service for Prescott Municipal Airport (PRC), featuring commercial jet service for the first time in our aviation history. SkyWest Airlines, operating as United Airlines Express, began operations on Aug. 29. This is a game-changer for air travel, not just in the Quad Cities, but in all of Northern Arizona.

United Express offers 50-seat jets – Bombardier CRJ200s – from Prescott to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) six days a week, and to Denver International (DEN) seven days a week, with one roundtrip each day. Within the United Airlines system, Prescott passengers are able to connect with over 650 worldwide destinations. They can use United’s booking system, their own travel agent or favorite online booking site.

34

This changes the paradigm for air travel in our region. Here’s why: For most air travelers in the Quad Cities, Payson, Verde Valley, Sedona and Flagstaff, the options have been limited. Air travel involved a commute to Phoenix, with a minimum of a two-hour trip each way. Cost of gas, travel time, hotel rooms, and possible highway closures have made the Phoenix route stressful and costly. Before now, there was not a good alternative.

Denver, it’s a non-stop flight. Additionally, Prescott will benefit from an increase in travelers coming to town. Los Angeles is the No. 1 tourism market for Prescott outside of Arizona. The Prescott Tourism Office has already been promoting Prescott’s “True West, Real Adventure” campaign to LA for a few years. This air service will complement our marketing efforts and bring more visitors from Southern California.

With this announcement, that paradigm has changed. Now you can make an easy trip to PRC, park for free, then go through a relaxed and comfortable security and terminal experience, before boarding a plane that will get you almost anywhere in the world with one stop. If your destination is LA or

The airline has indicated that they are open to adding flights if demand is there. Go to United.com to book your flight today. We are excited about this new air travel opportunity. Prescott Mayor, Greg Mengarelli

MILE-HIGH PRESCOTT Mile-high Prescott transcends the Arizona archetype with four mild seasons, an average annual daytime temperature of about 70 degrees, and 300-plus days of sunshine. Prescott’s outdoor recreation menu is designed to tantalize: with five scenic area lakes and a network of more than 450 miles of groomed multi-use trails winding through the city and into the adjacent Prescott

At the same time Prescott was established as the territorial capital, it was also designated as the county seat of Yavapai County, one of four original territorial counties. Although the capital moved to Tucson from 1867 to 1877, the capital returned to Prescott at the end of 1877 and remained until it was moved permanently to Phoenix in 1889. During these years as territorial capital, Prescott was the dominant political center of the territory and was protected and influenced by the presence of nearby Fort Whipple. Prescott is one of Arizona’s most historic Western towns and we have three local museums that tell the story of life in Prescott over the years. SHARLOT HALL MUSEUM - Sharlot Hall Museum is an educational and cultural center, which fosters public and community understanding and appreciation of historical, social, and natural aspects of Arizona, with emphasis on the Central Highlands, and which promotes involvement in and support for research, collections, conservation, exhibits and related programs.

National Forest. It’s no wonder Prescott is known as the place for True West. Real Adventure. Prescott was founded in 1864 as the territorial capital of Arizona. Though three of the names originally proposed for Prescott were “Audubon,” “Goodwin City” and “Aztlan” the name “Prescott” was chosen in honor of William Hickling Prescott, author of “The History of the Conquest of Mexico.” The Arizona Miner reported that the name was accepted because Prescott was “a good citizen, a true patriot, with industry, perseverance under difficulty, amiability of character and love of country.” 36

Prescott is rich with history, culture and plenty to explore, including the new Heritage Trail and History Hunt. The Prescott Heritage Trail and History Hunt bring the history of Prescott and beauty of the area to locals and visitors in an easy to follow tour. These self-guided activities lead explorers through a real-life historical walking tour of downtown Prescott and some of the great historical and cultural attractions. When did the fire level Whiskey Row and 25 saloons? Where were the first silent films shown in Prescott? Which hotel sold shares in the original project for just $1 each? These questions and so many more are answered on the Prescott Heritage Trail & History Hunt. Nizhoni Ranch / ARIZONA

Nizhoni Ranch Gallery Discover great tasting wine, experience Wild West history and enjoy the scenic views, national monuments and historical buildings. NIZHONI RANCH GALLERY is located in Sonoita, a beautiful part of Southern Arizona surrounded by the mountains, grasslands and vineyards. The owners, Steve and Gail Getzwiller, personally welcome all visitors to private showings at the ranch to share the stories of the weavers and the designs in a meaningful and artistic home environment. They host art collectors from around the world who are interested in authentic Native American weavings, pottery, baskets and jewelry. Nizhoni Ranch Gallery is also rated a 5-star stop on TripAdvisor. The collection started when Steve Getzwiller began collecting Navajo rugs in the 1970’s, driving dirt roads and sleeping in the truck so he could meet with the Native American weavers and hear their stories. His passion soon evolved into a business which Gail turned into a website to reach a broader audience. In 2000, Gail and Steve opened the Nizhoni Ranch Gallery to share their collection and

offer high quality Native American art to the public. Today, Steve is a leading expert in this field, having curated new and historic pieces for collectors around the world while helping keep Navajo traditions alive through multiple generations. “Many say it is like a museum,” says Steve. “However the art, tradition and spirit make you feel at home .” The weavings found at Nizhoni Ranch Gallery are created on traditional looms. Only the Navajo use this distinctive upright loom. It’s the same loom that the Navajo have used since the early 1700’s. The unique loom, combined with the weaver’s skill, creates rugs, blankets and wall hangings that will last for generations to come, continuing the artistic legacy of the Navajo people. Gail and Steve invite visitors to Nizhoni Ranch Gallery for a true Southwestern experience. “We enjoy sharing the beautiful place we live,” says Steve. “Only with a personal visit can on really appreciate the beauty and calming effect of the handcrafted Navajo rugs.”

Benson’s Hometown Fourth of July Celebration 2018

Benson CITY OF

Benson always holds great July 4th celebrations and 2018 will be no exception, with a fantastic Small Town Celebration complete with a breathtaking fireworks show. It will start off with a parade of local groups promoting everything from the patriotic American Legion and VFW to the Little League teams with their homemade floats using hay bales decorated with American flags. My favorite is the local antique tractor club driving their 20-plus vintage tractors, followed by local farmers on their horse-drawn wagons.

44

After the parade, everyone heads over to the Lions Park for the annual “Fire Department Water Fight.” All the local fire departments compete by using the water pressure from a firehose to move a barrel suspended on a cable between two poles. Two teams face each other under the cable and battle to see who can move the barrel over the opposing team’s heads. Everyone gets wet, including spectators.

Following the water fight, the fun and entertainment continues at the ramada, where there is live music, karate demonstrations, jumping castles, water slides and much more. There will also be arts and crafts, food booths and vendors. At 8:30 p.m., the singing of the National Anthem will be followed by one of the most spectacular half-hour fireworks shows you will ever see in a small town.
