Offroad LET’S GO

Are you looking for an Arizona backcountry adventure?

THERE’S MORE TO IT THAN CACTI AND DESERT. When you join us for a tour, you’ll get to experience the back roads and trails, while being enveloped in a raw natural beauty that is distinctly Arizona. When driving up the back way to Crown King for lunch at the Saloon, you’ll experience vast mountain ranges on one side of the road and dense forest on the other side.

If you choose to wander through the trails surrounding Phoenix, you’ll find some of the largest Saguaro cacti you’ve ever seen, all the while looking for the elusive wild burro (donkey), whose clever colors blend in with the vegetation; Northern Arizona’s red rocks and forest-covered mountains never fail to impress; or, visit Southern Arizona where historic landmarks

Arizona FUN FACTS ABOUT

The Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum is a multi-purpose indoor arena located at the Arizona State Fair

The Arizona State Fair runs October 6 through October 29. It is located at 1826 W. McDowell Road in Phoenix. Arizona is one of only two states, along with Hawaii, that does not observe daylight saving time. The Arizona Cardinals are the longest running continuous franchise in the National Football League, dating back to 1898. The Arizona-Arizona State football rivalry, known as the “Duel in the Desert,” was first played in 1899.

Film director Steven Spielberg was raised in Phoenix, and attended Arcadia High School.

The Territorial Cup, created for the winner of the Arizona-Arizona State football game, has been certified by the NCAA as the oldest rivalry trophy in college football. Autumn is an active season for rattlesnakes as they find food before hibernating for the winter. The Grand Canyon University men’s basketball team is named the “Antelopes.” The Antelopes play NCAA Division 1 basketball, and are coached by former Phoenix Suns star Dan Majerle.

The battleship USS Arizona was named in honor of the state. It was commissioned in 1913, and now rests at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. The northern portion of Arizona, including the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona and Payson, has four distinct seasons. The average date for the season’s first measurable snowfall (0.1 inch or more) in Flagstaff, Arizona is November 11. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has been dubbed “America’s Friendliest Airport.” Prescott has been named the “Best Destination in the State of Arizona for Nature Lovers” by travel website Expedia.com’s Viewfinder travel blog. The amount of copper on the roof of Arizona’s Capitol building is equivalent to 4,800,000 pennies. In just their fourth year of existence, the Arizona Diamondbacks won the World Series on November 4, 2001 at Bank One Ballpark (now named Chase Field) in Phoenix, Arizona.

Christmas, Arizona is an uninhabited mining community in Gila County. The town was created on December 25, 1902, prompting the name. Arizona’s White Mountains are a popular destination for cutting your own Christmas tree. Before you go into the woods to cut your tree, you are required to obtain a Christmas tree permit. 14|FALL 2017 www.travelhost.com

WITH THE CHANGING OF SEASONS brings visitors the opportunity to celebrate local harvests and holiday festivities in Mesa, Arizona. The area has long served as a culinary gateway to Greater Phoenix with the neighboring farms and agritourism attractions providing a continuous bounty of seasonal goods to enjoy. Olive oil pressing, corn mazes, and pumpkin patches are the stars of the many fall festivals along the Fresh Foodie Trail®, a collection of a dozen popular food-driven experiences that winds through Mesa and beyond into our regional towns of Gilbert and Queen Creek. For holiday happenings, musical performances, and art to both appreciate and gift, walk the vibrant streets of Downtown Mesa. Billed as

one of the up-and-coming outlets for new independent and alternative music artists on the verge of discovery, the Mesa Music Festival will host bands at multiple venues in November, with P.O.D. headlining the event. As the winter holidays approach, Downtown Mesa will illuminate with lights and decorations as it turns into Merry Main Street. Visitors can loop around an ice rink, snap a photo with Santa, and see holiday shows at the Mesa Arts Center to wrap up 2017. For trip planning information, downloadable guides and a complete calendar of events listing, go online to VisitMesa.com.

GILBERT’S EARLIEST HOMESTEAD sold in 1891. Some farms were free if they homesteaded for five years and made land improvements, while others paid the government cash for land, which could be purchased for as little as 50 cents an acre. William “Bobby” Gilbert sold a right-of-way through his land to Arizona Eastern Railway. In 1910, Gilbert was becoming established, but there were no paved

Gilbert was a prime farming community, fueled by construction of the Roosevelt Dam, and it remained an agricultural town for many years. Known as the “Hay Capital of the World” until the late 1920s, Gilbert is now the fourthwealthiest town in Arizona.

According to Statler’s daughter, her mother once commented, “She would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much.” The city prides itself as the home of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers. These Major

League Baseball teams call the Surprise Stadium home. As part of the city’s recreation campus, Surprise is also home to the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex (STRC). THE SCOTTSDALE WATERFRONT is located in downtown Scottsdale, where locals and tourists gather to visit specialty shops, boutiques, restaurants and outdoor cafes. The Hohokam people engineered miles of canals across Phoenix from 500 to 1450 A.D., and diverted water from the Salt River to the their farms. Archaeologists consider this ancient canal network to be one of the most sophisticated

irrigation systems ever created, using only preindustrial technology. Named “Scottsdale in 1894 by founder Winfield Scott, the city was incorporated in 1951. Its population was 2,000 at the time, and by 2014 reached 230,512. Scottsdale Waterfront offers beautiful scenery and an ideal setting where patrons can surround themselves with renowned artists, wineries and musicians lining the banks of the water.

THUNDERBIRD ARTISTS has been a long-time friend of many Arizona charities by offering fundraising efforts within each of the festivals. It all started in 1992, when they began partnering with their longest running charity, the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce. Other charities include Phoenix

Children’s Hospital, Diabetes Association, Humane Society, Kiwanis Club of Scottsdale McCormick, Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce, Sunset Kiwanis of Fountain Hills, Surprise Sundancers, Terpsicore Dance Company, ICAN (cancer charity), Fountain Hills Downtown Business Association and

veteran charity, American Healing Arts Foundation. This season, they will be adding the Gilbert Fire Department and Gilbert Parks and Recreation non-profit organizations. Thunderbird Artists’ records go back as far as 2002, confirming donations of $645,367.25.

N G

Thunderbird Artists feels the part they play in fundraising doesn’t hold a candle to all that the volunteers have done by donating their time and support. Volunteers are the foundation and backbone that give strength and success in making a charity’s mission a reality. Thank you to all!

Enjoy the hike to the bottom of the waterfalls, and take in the aspen, cottonwood and elder trees that surround the park. Payson’s weather is said to be “close to perfect,” as it enjoys four distinct seasons and is generally 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix (approximately a 1 ½-hour drive away). Midto-late October provides the best time to witness the brilliant fall colors that line the Mogollon Rim during this time of year. Payson averages 21 inches of snow per year with the first measurable snow generally occurring around mid-October in the higher elevations and during November closer to town. WILLIAMS Williams lies along the route of Historic Route

66, Interstate 40 and the Southwest Chief Amtrak train route. Williams is home to the southern terminus of the Grand Canyon Railway, which takes visitors to Grand Canyon Village. Known as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon,” Williams was the last town on Historic Route 66 to be bypassed by Interstate 40 (Oct. 13, 1984). This four-season city offers unlimited recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, including seven area fishing-lakes, hiking trails up Bill Williams Mountain and into Sycamore Canyon, an alpine ski area and an abundance of wildlife. Williams is home to Bearizona, where you can drive into the Arizona wilderness and witness animals in natural habitats from the comfort of your own vehicle. Ride the Polar Express Train through the nighttime wilderness of Williams to the “North Pole” from November 10 through January 6. “Frontier Christmas”

PRESCOTT’S DESIGNATION AS ARIZONA’S CHRISTMAS CITY gets an annual boost as Sharlot Hall Museum presents its Frontier Christmas Open House on Saturday, Dec. 2, following the Prescott downtown Courthouse lighting ceremony. Luminarias, handmade decorations, fresh-baked cookies, and hot cider welcome locals and out-of-town visitors to celebrate a full dose of holiday spirit and good cheer on the museum grounds. For more than 20 years, Frontier Christmas has been entertaining guests with the warmth and spirit of Christmas past as the museum (and the city) puts on its holiday finest. The smell of cookies and hot cider mix with the scent of pines frosted by the December chill. Music fills the air, and children activities abound in the 4-acre museum campus. Throughout the celebration, living history interpreters regale guests with tales of pioneer Christmas traditions and Arizona’s early history. “Judge Howard” will talk ‘law ‘n’ order’ in front of the Fort Misery fire, along with tales of a Prescott Christmas in the 1860s when saloon keepers would get old boots and old coats and lace them with a pint of

whiskey, then hang the garments up Christmas Eve on trees in the park. Also available will be events at the Schoolhouse, the old-fashioned letterpress printing office, decorating the Christmas tree with vintage trimmings in the Governor’s Mansion, meeting “Jessie Benton Frémont” and making Victorian holiday ornaments. The museum is at 415 W. Gurley St., two blocks west of the Courthouse Plaza in downtown Prescott. Living history interpreters will be on hand during regular museum hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday), closed for the Courthouse tree lighting, and reopen for the Open House from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission for the evening holiday festivities is $5, and free to museum members and children (17 and younger).

MILE-HIGH PRESCOTT the Arizona archetype with four mild seasons, an average annual daytime temperature of about 70 degrees, and more than 300 days of sunshine. Just 90 miles north of Phoenix, Prescott is situated comfortably against the Prescott National Forest. Great Lakes Airlines serves LAX, and Denver with regular flights. From art to artifacts, Prescott’s history is well documented. Prescott was the Arizona Territory’s original capital and is now home to the World’s Oldest Rodeo. Prescott’s four museums bear witness to this area’s Native American, military and Western pioneer history and heritage. Downtown’s Whiskey Row still houses saloons patronized by Old West legends like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Courthouse Plaza, in the heart of downtown, is bustling with activity in Prescott. During the summer months, the elmshrouded venue beats to five nights of free, live entertainment. The plaza also hosts community events, arts, crafts and car shows. Courthouse Plaza was named one of the Top Ten Public Spaces in the United States by the prestigious APA (American Planning Association). One might think that Arizona is an arid moonscape dotted with cacti and other prickly plant life, but Prescott is a mile above sea level and enjoys four mild seasons and blooming flora. The city boasts 16 parks and three lakes, with kayak and canoe rentals available at Watson, Goldwater and Lynx Lakes. Bike rentals are available at Watson Lake. Prescott also caters to those in the mood for an outdoor odyssey of trail trekking, with more than 450 miles of groomed trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The Mile-High Trail System contains approximately 28 miles of trails, including Rails-to-Trails projects along

the former Santa Fe Railroad, Prescott Circle Trail System and Greenways Trails System. The Prescott Circle Trail is a network of trails that continues to expand in and around Prescott. The Greenways Trails are urban trails along Granite and Miller Creeks that run through downtown Prescott. Performing and visual arts play a large part in the fiber of this high desert mountain community. In addition to the many area galleries, the Prescott Center for the Arts, the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center, the Sharlot Hall Museum Theater and the historic Elks Opera House provide artistic sustenance to this entertainment savvy locale. Recently, Prescott was named the Top Destination in Arizona for Nature Lovers, by Expedia, the city was also named in the Top 13 Happiest and Healthiest Communities in the country by Time Magazine. More recently, Prescott was named one of the “coolest” downtowns in North America by Expedia, and was nominated by USA Today to be one of the “Top 10 Arizona Travel Destinations”. The American Lung Association consistently ranks Prescott’s air quality to be the best in the continental United States. Throughout the year, Prescott plays host to many events that celebrate the history, culture and art of the West. The summer season heats up with Prescott Frontier Days and World’s Oldest Rodeo (celebrating 130 years this summer), the Prescott Indian Art Market, Prescott Jazz Summit and the Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering.

ELKS THEATRE

AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Enriching the community for more than 100 years

by Trevor Odom, Assistant Marketing and Program Manager

THE ELKS THEATRE building in Prescott, Arizona has been a lot of things to a lot of people. In the 112 years since the building was built, it has been a staple of the community, serving at various times as a theatre, lawyers’ offices, federal courthouse and

retail storefronts, among many other things. For the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks in 1905, it was the only lodge in all of the Arizona Territory. The Elks’ organization moved to Prescott Valley in the ‘70s, and the building changed owners many times

over the next few decades. The building, which had fallen into decay over the years, went through many renovations which sought to modernize both the interior and exterior. These renovations fell short of the splendor once assigned to the building in times gone by. In 2012, the Elks Theatre and Performing Arts Foundation was formed in order to protect and renovate the building as well as make it accessible to the community. A multimillion dollar renovation was conducted and spearheaded by architect Frank Degrazia. Today, the building is open for public use year-round for a variety of functions. Live shows are performed weekly in the theatre, ranging from local favorites to professional bands. The theatre is also a place where many charitable events take place, such as the Boys & Girls Club “Dancing for the Stars,” or the Coalition for Compassion and Justice charity luncheon. In the Performing Arts Center, you will find a variety of classes, seminars

and events going on – from weddings happening in the magnificent and restored upper ballroom to ballet classes occurring in our Sprung Marley floored dance studio, one of the only such studios in Yavapai County. The Elks Theatre and Performing Arts Center is a community space accessible to the public of Yavapai County and the surrounding area. Tours of the theatre are given by docents dressed in early 20th century attire from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Performances occur most Friday and Saturday nights, and tickets can be purchased online or at the box office before the show. The Performing Arts Center is open during regular business hours Monday through Friday, and can host private events 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is the mission of the organization and the staff that each and every member of the community benefits from the presence of the theatre and performing arts center.
