FROM THE EDITOR

Fall ushers in a season of renewed energy, crisp air and cozy nights, busy back-to-school days, and activity-filled weekends.

As we welcome this bustling season, I thought it would be fun to put together a brief guide (or bucket list, if you will) of different ways to escape the hustle and bustle and celebrate, relax, and refresh here at Riverton:

Pickleball is the hottest and fastest-growing sport in the nation, and we have an incredible Pickleball community right here at Riverton! So this Fall, it's your turn to get in on the action and see what the buzz is about! Not sure how to play? I broke down the basics of the game for you on page 22, so check it out, grab a paddle, and get ready for a whole lot of fun on the courts!

Before you head out on the courts, avoid the crowded stores and do your one-stop Fall gear shopping in our Pro Shop at our gorgeous new Golf Center. Pro Tip: while there, take a trip up to the second-story lounge and sip in the stunning view (and a drink or two).

Speaking of views, take advantage of our beautiful slice of paradise and plan to take your holiday family photo shoot right here. What better background for your photos than our Donald Ross gem or gorgeous new facility additions? Football season is (finally!) here, and if you can't be at the Linc, there's no better place to impress your friends and family than by inviting them to cheer on the Birds at our insanely cool, new Poolside Cafe (complete with a fireplace lounge), second Golf Center Lounge, or even at the Clubhouse Bar-you can't go wrong with any location!

Want to show off your club to your friends in a different way? Host a Fall-themed dinner party, Friendsgiving, or even a Happy Hour!

Plan to attend one of our many fun Fall events-from Ratpack Night to Fall Fest and everything in between, there is something for everyone, and we guarantee a good time!

The list of things to do here this Fall is endless, so hopefully, you'll take some of these ideas and seize the season! Whichever Riverton Fall adventures you embark upon, I wish you fun and memories that will last a lifetime We look forward to celebrating with you, and as always, thank you for making Riverton a special place to call home

Happy Reading, Happy Adventuring, Happy Fall!

Casey-Lee Waldron

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to our 2023 Fall edition of Ripples! After an exceptionally busy, albeit exciting, summer, I am looking forward to cooler days on the course (as golf is always great this time of year-especially here at Riverton) and continuing our mission of elevating our community

This summer, following our Facilities Master Plan, we were proud to open our new resort-style pool and twostory Golf Center, both of which seem to be great successes It has been wonderful to see members utilize the spaces, hanging at the pool and enjoying post-round cocktails while taking in the vistas at the Golf Center-which turned out to be an incredible venue for viewing (and staying dry) during our recently completed Men’s Member-Member.

By the time this goes to print, we will have completed the “soft opening” of the new Poolside Café, which may be the area I am most excited about Despite having to navigate through several challenges due to potential regulatory changes, there is no question this space will be the heartbeat of summers at Riverton and even a great new Fall hang-out with the fireplace area, bar, and big-screen TVs Hannah and her team are armed with great ideas and plans for all the new spaces, and as they monitor usage and operations, they will evaluate and pivot as needed

The Construction and Pool Committees are continuing their work with our professionals on the specifics of the Final Phase of the pool renovations so we can have the Splash Pad and back area of the pool completed by Spring. Since this space is considered a wetlands area, it continues to be a delicate one to navigate, and we are doing everything feasible to avoid having to go to the DEP for approval In addition, final plans are in the works for converting the old Pro Shop to a Simulator Lounge using Trackman technology We will be sure to share renderings of both areas as soon as possible

Starting in early October, we will begin “refreshing” our cart fleet We have reached the end of a 3-year lease (our last fleet lasted nine years), so the Golf Committee and Board have decided to keep the current fleet You may have noticed tears in the cart seats, but this is a warranty issue, and we can upgrade our carts at approximately the same cost That said, we are excited to share we will be getting upgraded seats and new GPS technology that allows us to track cart movement and utilize Yamaha’s geofencing technology to ensure carts do not enter restricted areas (which will help protect areas that get damaged by cart traffic, especially during outings) Once the upgraded seats and technology arrive, Mike and his team will share more information

On a disciplinary note, our Disciplinary Committee finalized our policies and procedures, which were emailed and posted on the website I feel it is incumbent on me to ensure everyone is aware that we are tightening up on these items (pace of play, behavior around the club, dress codes, etc ) Please note that decorum and behavior not in line with our policies will not go unnoticed and will be acted upon

As I’ve previously stated, it is the mission of the Board to serve the entire membership and support our team in providing you and your guests with the best possible experience, amenities, and services. It is our goal and belief that we are successfully moving forward with making Riverton the preeminent country club, and we thank you all for your continued support

I look forward to seeing you all at the club, and, as always, please feel free to drop me a note with any ideas or comments

GENERALLY SPEAKING

With General Manager Hannah Librizzi

Wouldn’t it be nice if the cold winter months went by at the same rate as the warm summer months? Luckily for us, summer doesn’t have to feel like it comes to a screeching halt With the completion of our new beautiful Poolside Café, we can pretend summer doesn’t end long after the kids go back to school and life becomes hectic again The addition of the heated pool has been such a treat to see the membership utilizing the facilities all through September It hasn’t been easy getting to this point, but I think I speak for the entire membership when I say it was well worth the wait I can’t thank you all enough for your continued support as we navigate these new spaces This would not have been possible without the work of Tom Kearns, Marty Rosica, the Board, and, of course, you all I look forward to seeing you at the Club and utilizing the much-anticipated Poolside Café and Golf Center There really is no other club in the area like ours, and this is only the beginning

I have received many questions regarding the new space, and want to use this opportunity to answer some of the most frequently asked questions:

How long is the pool and café going to stay open?

The pool closes on October 1st, but the Café, however, does not have a set closing date I will use the next few weeks to determine how the space will be used. Between the Main Bar, Golf Center Bar, & now the Café Bar, you won’t need to walk more than a few feet to grab a cold beverage But from an operations standpoint, we need to determine how these additional service outlets correlate. Members want to be where other members are so my plan is to try to streamline a few different themed nights at the Café to drive members to this space on a given day or time (i e Eagles Game Day specials) Again, this is all new for us & and will be a bit of a trial period as we navigate member usage

What happened to the towel service?

We have the washer and dryer ready to be turned on but since it took until mid-August to install, we decided to start fresh next summer with this new amenity We were notified that the warranty for the equipment would begin after the start-up and would last 1 year. It made more sense for us to wait until next summer when we would be constantly running the machines in case something were to happen, it would be covered

Will we be able to order food from the Golf Center?

Currently, we are not running food to that space but you are welcome to pick up takeout orders from the Main Clubhouse to bring with you to the Golf Center Now that the Poolside Café is open, you may utilize the form of “grab and go ” We are again figuring out the usage of the space and will make adjustments down the road if necessary

What is the plan store for pool landscaping? And will you be providing more shade?

Once we finish the Splash Pad, we will complete the rest of the landscape inside the pool area There is another small section of concrete that will be poured and will look to add some more space for kids to play in addition to the playground Based on feedback provided by the membership, we understand the need for more shade around the pool and will address those concerns before next summer

As always, my door is always open for you to stop by. I encourage member feedback, so please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns I look forward to seeing you around the club and sharing the many fun Fall events we have in store with you and your families

Please let me extend my sincere thanks to all for the many warm welcomes! My first few weeks have been nothing short of wonderful, and I am incredibly grateful and excited to be a part of the Riverton family.

Need some answers, got some feedback, or just want to chat? Pop by my office anytime! I look forward to building lasting relationships with everyone within this special community. Cheers!

Golf is a sport that harmonizes skill, strategy, and nature. At the heart of every golf course lies a meticulously manicured landscape, where the changing seasons act as both a challenge and an opportunity for those responsible for its maintenance The art of maintaining a golf course is a complex dance with nature, and it requires an intricate understanding of how the changing seasons impact every facet of the playing surfaces As winter turns to spring and summer fades into autumn, the processes and practices employed by golf course superintendents must adapt to ensure that players enjoy the best possible conditions

Spring: A Time of Renewal

As winter retreats and the first signs of spring emerge, golf course maintenance teams eagerly await the opportunity to revive the course This season marks a time of renewal as the dormant grass begins to

CHANGING SEASONS & SHIFTING GEARS

awaken from its winter slumber One of the primary tasks in spring is aeration, where holes are created in the turf to reduce compaction to allow for better air circulation, root growth, and water absorption This process helps the grass recover from the stresses of winter and prepares it for the demands of the upcoming golf season

Spring also signals the return of regular mowing and the overseeding of areas weakened by winter Pesticide and fertilization programs are carefully tailored to provide the necessary nutrients for rapid growth without overstimulating the grass. The goal in spring is to encourage healthy, vigorous turf growth that acts as the foundation to support quality playing surfaces throughout long, hot summer days.

Summer: Heat & Stress

As summer sets in with high temps and humidity, course maintenance becomes a daily battle against heat, drought, and foot/cart traffic Irrigating turf in the summer is a balance of high-tech irrigation systems and manual watering with a hose We use the irrigation system to deeply water the turf in a broadcast fashion, where the use of handheld moisture meters and hoses are employed to pinpoint areas of needed water Syringing is also utilized during the summer; syringing is a light application of water meant to stay on the leaf surface and cool the plant To mitigate the effects of high-traffic areas, specialized maintenance practices, such as aeration with micro tines and topdressing with sand are also implemented

As the summer heat intensifies, golf course maintenance shifts into more defensive and protective practices Insect and disease management becomes critical

during the summer months; fungicides and insecticides are used to protect the turf from diseases and insects that thrive in warm, humid conditions

Autumn:

Preparing for Winter Onset

As summer fades into autumn, the temperatures and day length begin to fall, the need to be defensive lessens, and the opportunity to be aggressive grows The plants’ need for water and cooling is low, so the level of irrigation can be reduced, which translates into firmer surfaces The drop in heat also means turf can withstand more mechanical stress, such as lower mowing heights and increased mowing and rolling frequency

Autumn’s most unique challenge it presents is falling leaves Golf course maintenance teams spend hours each day, often entire days, removing leaves from the playing surfaces.

Winter: A Season of Rest

Winter on a golf course is a period of relative

rest for both the turf and the maintenance team While turf is dormant and not actively growing, maintenance teams can focus on equipment maintenance and planning for the upcoming year Often, we use this time to assess the performance of the previous season's maintenance practices and make adjustments for the future

In conclusion, each of the changing seasons has a profound impact on the practices and processes involved in maintaining a golf course, and each season presents unique challenges that require expertise and dedication Here at Riverton, it is our pleasure and goal to ensure you can enjoy the beauty and playability of our Donald Ross gem year-round.

Cheers to a great Autumn season ahead and winter preparations!

riverton racquets

TENNIS TIPS

> Practice your toss

When serving, your ball toss should go straight up & come straight down about 18 inches in front of your leading foot Grab a bucket of balls & practice your toss, without actually hitting the ball

> get your back leg behind the ball

Getting your back leg and weight behind the ball allows for easier weight transfer and a more consistent shot.

> Keep your head still

If you find yourself mishitting shots, be sure that you aren’t moving your head as you swing. Follow the ball onto the racquet and keep your head still until the shot has been played

SERVING UP FUN

What an incredible summer we had on the Riverton courts! My heartfelt thanks to everyone for your continued support of our Racquets Programming. It has been so exciting to see our vibrant community grow, and I am simply amazed by the dedication, talent, and enthusiasm on our courts day in and day out

To that end, please join me in congratulating Jack Cranmer for his outstanding performance in the USTA Finals and Lyla Joshi and Jane Ho for making their Varsity Teams. Let's also give a round of applause to Andrea Bowers and Nikki Ariaratnam for their big regionals win and earning a spot in the Nationals 4 0 league! On the Pickleball side, our very own superstar Steve Foley is making a name for himself as one of the top players in South Jersey, and I am excited to see all he will accomplish!

Our future of tennis here at the Club is bright in large part thanks to the hard work and dedication of Lily Schaffer, Ellie Lucas, Alice Hagner, Jimmy Binkley, Ryan and Everett Lynch, Rio and Sol Fontanez, and many more There is no doubt that our Racquets program is full of talent, but most importantly, it's full of fun! I hope this Fall you'll bring someone new out on the courts with you or even come try out a new clinic yourself We have a great lineup of programming and events this Fall, so be sure to check out all our offerings and sign up on the website or the app. I can’t wait to see you on the courts!

pickleball 101 let’s

01

break it down

Each rally begins with a serve

The game and each rally starts with the serve. The player on the right side of the court, facing their opponents, starts the serve You serve diagonally to your opponent, into the right or left service area:

02

You must serve underhand

A serve must be hit with an underhand stroke or backhand with contact below the waist Your arm must move in an upward arc when you strike the ball You can hit the ball out of the air or drop the ball on the ground and hit it. The goal of the pickleball serve is to put the ball in play (Quite different from the tennis serve, where the goal is to serve aggressively to win the point.)

03

Each point continues until a fault

After the serve, gameplay continues until a “fault” is committed A fault ends the rally. There are 3 types of faults:

The serve does not clear the kitchen (including the line)

A shot is hit out of bounds behind the baseline or outside the sideline

A shot is hit into the net

You can't volley in the kitchen

The 7 ft zone on each side marks the non-volley zone, or 'kitchen' This means you can never hit a volley while having any part of your body in the kitchen. And you can’t let your momentum carry you into the kitchen after a volley either Once you play, you’ll see players at the net have a big advantage. They can hit any ball high enough with a downward "smash" This shot puts opponents immedia

You can hit groundstrokes in the kitchen 05

If your opponent hits a short shot landing in the kitchen, you can enter & hit from the kitchen. Dinks are a defensive shot and an important pickleball strategy Often your best move after moving into the kitchen to field a dink is to dink right back to your opponent’s kitchen

06

The ball must bounce on both sides before either team can volley

Before any player can hit a shot out of the air, the ball must bounce once on each side (known as the 'double bounce rule') So if your partner is serving and you start at the kitchen, you’re in a dangerous position. Why? Because the returning team can hit a shot right at you, and if you react with a volley, that’s a fault You lose the point

07

You only win points on your serve

You only win points on your serve, and you continue serving until you lose a rally. After winning each point on your serve, you switch sides with your partner and serve to the other opponent

08

Both partners serve in a turn

In each turn, both players (in doubles) get the opportunity to serve In scoring, you’ll hear players announce three numbers, "Zero, zero… two". So what the heck is that third number? It tracks which of the two players on a team has the serve

Let’s say the game is tied at 3-3 If you start the serve, you’ll announce “3-3-1,” so everyone knows you are the first player in rotation serving. If you lose the rally, the ball doesn’t go to your opponents It goes to your teammate who will announce “3-3-2".

If your partner loses their serve, a 'side out' occurs in which the ball returns to your opponents who again announce, “3-3-1"

09

first team to 11 wins but you must win by 2

Following all the rules above, the game continues until one team gets 11 points The catch? You have to win by 2.

2023 swim team season recap

The 2023 swim season has ended, but the memories of another fun summer for our Riverton Wave swimmers will last a lifetime

Moving up a division made for some incredibly competitive and close meets we are proud to have had many Tri-County qualifiers, shattered pool records, and team spirit that surpassed all recent years There were team bonding luncheons every Friday with games, a DJ, and (of course) the parent social. Our end-of-season party featured competitive parent relays and night-time swimming under the stars at our new pool. And what could be a better way to cap the season than seeing moonlit swimmers aged 8 to 18 racing back and forth playing sharks and minnows? We hope the team continues to grow and welcome all new members and families to join us next summer to be a part of these wonderful swim team traditions!
