Riverton Wave: Gearing Up For A Big Season
FROM THE EDITOR
As we usher in the new year, first, let us begin, as always, by thanking you for your continued support and for making Riverton such a special place to call home. Next, let us raise our glasses to the beginning of one of the most exciting chapters in Riverton's rich history! I once wrote that Riverton is a place where you can transform your life from ordinary to extraordinary, and with each passing year, that phrase continues to prove true. 2023 brought us unforgettable memories and the incredible new additions of our state-of-the-art two-story Golf Center, complete with an open-air lounge to take in sweeping views of our Donald Ross gem and our stunning new resort-style Pool Complex and Cafe. On top of that, our Ballroom and Banquet spaces received transformative facelifts, making them more enjoyable and attractive to members, guests, and banquet clientele. We then kicked off 2024 with a bang with the unveiling of our exciting new Simulator Lounge (open to all members), and we will soon be getting to work on our Splash Pad addition at the Pool. And as the adage goes, the best is still yet to come! These additions are undoubtedly game-changers and have elevated Riverton to a new echelon of prestige and allure to golfers, young professionals, racquet players, and families across the Philadelphia and South Jersey region. But at the end of the day, what continues to make Riverton most extraordinary is you. Our warm, vibrant, diverse community is what sets us apart from the rest. There are plenty of beautiful clubs and organizations, but there is only one Riverton. A place where you can walk in and know you will always be met with a warm smile (and often some fun, quick-witted banter), a place where unforgettable memories (whether at member-events or just hanging at the bar), a place where you can play a round on one of the most remarkable Donald Ross golf courses, a place where you can go when you wake up and decide you want to get in on the pickleball trend, a place you can go and within seconds you are home. So, as we embark upon this new year that bodes to be one of our best, we thank you for adding magic and light to our community. 2024, here we come! Bigger, brighter, and better than ever before! As always, happy reading, and cheers to a prosperous new year!

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT TOM KEARNS I hope this finds you all healthy and happy following a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Once again, the Riverton Board understands and appreciates that this is a financially challenging time and wants to thank you all for your continued strong support of the Club and driving membership growth. I can’t help but reflect on all we have accomplished over the last two years--WOW. Based on your input via our survey, we embarked on our Journey to 2025, which included updates to the golf course and significant changes to our overall facilities. Since the completion of the survey, we have:
A few more details and data behind the “why”: The improvements to our golf course have driven golf memberships, and we have sold out of all golf categories (including the newly added restricted categories) and are now on a full waitlist; We believe the enhancements to the pool, as well as the patio, will drive increased house memberships; The enhancements to the Ballroom have already begun to pay dividends, with us hosting two of the biggest weddings we’ve hosted in recent years; The Simulator Lounge will quickly become a hub of activity (see enclosed article on benefits of simulators and shuffleboard) during both off-season and in-season months.
Completed the Ross Restoration of our Donald Ross gem; Increased the size and quality of our outdoor dining patio; Rebuilt our entire pool complex, which features a stunning new café; To that end, I would like to reiterate that while the Board continues Upgraded our “bag storage building” to be a beacon to our golf to guide the Club utilizing our Journey to 2025 Strategic Plan, we are course with a fantastic viewing deck and lounge area as well as a now beginning to look ahead to what is next; a well-run organization gorgeous new pro shop; should always have a plan and roadmap for the coming few years to Updated the finishes in our banquet spaces (Ballroom and guide the current work. An integral component of this plan will Andreola Room); continue to be a chief view of our fiduciary responsibilities. I admit And most recently, the construction of our new, state-of-the-art that will be a bit of a challenge given the current economic Simulator Lounge with two Trackman simulators and an environment, but it will be the key focus of the Board over the next incredibly cool shuffleboard table; few months, and we will have more to share at our annual meeting in Next up, construction will soon commence on the Splash Pad, April. which we plan to have open for the season; We will also be adding additional concrete along the back area of I look forward to seeing you all around the Club, and, as always, the Pool deck and are working on providing additional options please feel free to drop me a note with any ideas or comments. for more shade. GENERALLY SPEAKING With General Manager Hannah Librizzi
We’ve had quite the “December to Remember” this year at RCC! Between our Annual Tree Lighting and sold-out Dinner Dance to our Santa Brunch and Cookie Bake, and a final toast to a New Year with our NYE dinner buffet, it has been nonstop fun! So, if you are wondering how we can possibly top this year, don’t worry--we have a plan!
I want to take a moment to thank you for the incredible past year. Without your support, we would not have been able to accomplish these incredible facility upgrades and continue on this path to greatness. Word is spreading about how special of a place Riverton is, and it starts with our distinguished membership. I also want to mention that your Holiday Fund contributions continue to be greatly appreciated by the staff. This tradition is a true testament to the generosity our membership shows, and I speak for the entire team when I say thank you so very much.
While these winter months are rumored to be our slow season, it sure doesn’t feel that way, especially when we are lucky enough to get a 60-degree day in December. We have many new, fun, and exciting events in store for you all. Starting with our Winter Golf Simulator League. The frustration of making progress in your golf game, only for the season to end, is a sentiment many share. So with the addition of the Simulator, we can all continue refining our skills throughout the winter with the added bonus of staying warm! In addition, we encourage you to continue to stay connected to the club and look out for our weekly e-blast with upcoming events and dinner specials for all to enjoy.
In closing, Happy New Year, and may this year be the best yet here at Riverton. We look forward to continuing to create timeless memories with you and your families, and as always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or feedback. Ripples | 6

The Spicy Tuna Poke Bowl paired with the Smoked Old Fashioned creates a delightful combination of flavors. The freshness of the Tuna, combined with the Spicy Cucumbers, Avocado, Watermelon Radish, Wakame, Spicy Mayo, & Ponzu contrasts really well with the smoky, richness of the Old Fashioned, creating a well-rounded, satisfying lunch or dinner experience here at the club.
The Bolognese is a personal favorite of mine, as are the weekly specials that Chef adds to the menu based on member feedback. The Martini Flights on Tuesday nights were a great addition this year, adding a fun twist to the Dining Experience. I also appreciate the Wine Pairings that accompany the menu items, allowing me to try new and exciting flavors.

I will start by saying that I have been fortunate enough to have dined in some of the best restaurants in the world. Our cuisine has been on par, & sometimes better than, many of the restaurants that I have frequented! Truly a rare feat for a country club.
We enjoy gathering at Gin’s Mill Bar for a casual experience, personable servers, delicious beverages, and a good meal. We’re greeted with a smile and some fun banter, guaranteeing a relaxed evening.
Drumroll, please! Say hello to our newest Ripples feature: "What Members Are Saying!" Consider this to be your treasure trove of Riverton Insider & Foodie Secrets, where your fellow members spill the beans on their favorite menu items, dining hacks, recommendations, and more. We’re bringing their honest reviews and feedback to you, so you can try something new, learn something new, and most importantly, enjoy something new! Want to share your favorite dish, an unlikely pairing, recommendation, or hot tip? Contact Clare today, and let’s keep sharing! Ripples | 7
Regarding the latest menu, I highly recommend trying the Cheese Board and Roasted Cauliflower Salad (I have never had a bad appetizer here). For our entrees, the Short Rib &Cuban Sandwich are excellent, as is the Pappardelle Bolognese (and it’s not easy to send out Pappardelle perfectly cooked)! I’m eager to try the new menu Branzino & Beef Bourguignon, as well! Finally, if you haven't yet tried the Homemade Ice Creams, you are definitely missing out!
We love to try the new menu items of the season, and most recently have enjoyed the Fish & Chips. The Scallops are always a personal favorite. It’s also fun to explore the Weekly Specials that are offered. We must admit though, the classics never disappoint! We always know that a warm bowl of Riverton’s French Onion Soup with a Caesar Salad (we recommend to order it topped with Blackened Shrimp) will hit the spot every time!
Happy dining!
And, of course, don’t forget the Dirty Martini or Gin & Tonic, YUM!

EMBRACING THE CHILL: Winter Play & Its Impact On Course Maintenance Drew white
Golf, commonly linked to idyllic scenes of sunny days, lush greenery, and mild winds, might appear exclusive to summer. However, an emerging trend among aficionados embraces the distinctive allure of playing in winter. This allows players to keep their skills sharp, warding off the rustiness that often creeps in during the off-season, and offers an opportunity to relish the outdoors, exercise, and camaraderie with friends precisely when cabin fever tends to strike. Yet, while winter play introduces a fresh facet to the sport, it poses numerous challenges for maintaining courses in colder conditions. Maintaining a course throughout the winter is a delicate balancing act of allowing golfers to continue enjoying
the sport while protecting the course from potential damage caused by winter conditions. One primary concern revolves around the impact of frost. When a thin layer of ice forms, it renders the turf fragile and susceptible to breakage. Playing on such frost-covered terrain can inflict significant harm. Frost not only coats the exterior of the turf but also infiltrates the cellular structure within the plant. Excessive pressure on the turf can rupture the ice and damage these cells, resulting in observable black or tan discoloration that may eventually lead to the turf's demise. Consequently, numerous courses adopt frost delay measures, temporarily suspending activities until the ice thaws and the course is deemed safe for use. Ripples | 13
Winter play course maintenance presents another big obstacle: snow. Although a snow-blanketed course may be visually enchanting (especially our Donald Ross gem), it demands meticulous handling to safeguard the underlying grass. Too much snow can compact the ground and form an insulating layer, trapping moisture that might induce diseases like snow molds. To mitigate winter-related damage, superintendents employ specialized fungicides designed to specifically counteract snow molds. Additionally, we administer a sand top dressing, shielding the turf's growing points and facilitating surface drainage to alleviate these concerns. Winter play can result in increased wear and tear on the course. Divots and ball marks take longer to heal, and foot and cart traffic in frost-covered and wet areas can
cause lasting damage. Since seeds cannot germinate in colder temperatures, replacing divots is the best practice during winter golf. This allows the turf to heal and grow back once it breaks its winter dormancy in the warmer spring temperatures. Fixing ball marks on greens is always best practice, no matter the time of year; a repaired ball mark will create a smoother putting surface and heal faster than an unrepaired ball mark. In closing, winter golf undoubtedly injects an extra dose of thrill and complexity into the game, granting enthusiasts the joy of indulging year-round, but necessitates a thoughtful approach to maintaining the golf course. So, as the allure of winter golf grows, we encourage you to seize the opportunity to experience our stunning course during the off-season! As always, we look forward to seeing you on the greens-don't forget to dress warmly!

Proudly Introducing:
revolutionizing the member experience The addition of our Simulator Lounge promises to revolutionize the member experience by offering year-round play, skill enhancement, additional social benefits, and tech-driven dimension to our club's amenities. A few specifics include: Winter Leagues & Revenue Boost: We anticipate successful Winter Leagues that will generate additional revenue while keeping members engaged during the offseason. Inclusivity and Skill Improvement: The Lounge is set up to welcome not only our seasoned golfers and those looking to work on their skills all year long, but newcomers to the game who may have been previously been hesitant to hit the course, and even those members who are simply looking for a fun, cool spot to socialize and hang. Range Expansion & Quick Warmups: Given our limited distance range, this addresses our distance limitations by providing an opportunity to work on longer shots, as well as convenient morning warmups. Club Fitting & Lessons: This space provides upgraded capabilities for club fitting and lessons that benefits both members and professional staff. We will be announcing demo days in the coming months. Meanwhile, introducing shuffleboard will further elevate member engagement, providing a fun, social activity that fosters camaraderie, friendly competition, and an inclusive atmosphere that broadens our Club’s appeal, while enhancing community ties. Fun Fact: Shuffleboard has been a long-standing tradition at Country Clubs, serving as social and competitive recreational activity that thrives in a community-oriented atmosphere . The game itself dates back to 15th-century England, initially played on ship decks with coins and then evolving into a popular pastime in taverns. The game involves sliding weighted discs down a long, narrow board, aiming to land them in scoring areas. Ripples | 18

In the winter season, opting for a braised cut of meat is a fantastic choice. Typically, tougher meat cuts come at a more affordable price compared to those intended for direct grilling. Slow-cooking your meat at a lower temperature guarantees the most succulent and tender bites. When it comes to stews or a classic pot roast, Beef Chuck stands out as the prime option. Its ample marbling of fat ensures it stays moist and flavorful throughout prolonged, gentle cooking processes.

riverton racquets TENNIS TIPS > beginnger backhand Hit your two handed backhand using the continental grip. As you extend through the shot make sure your racket extends off your chest & finishes on the opposite shoulder with the butt of your racket handle facing your opponent. Move back into your ready position and back into the forehand grip.
> how to hit a solid volley Return your volleys deep into the court. That’ll keep the other player behind the baseline instead of running in to the net to retrieve your ball. Don’t take the racket all the way back. Only give your contact point the strength of a spirited High 5! See that white tape on the net? Try not to drop your racket head below that white tape. That will make you more aggressive & ensure the ball goes over the net.
JOIN US ON THE COURTS THIS SPRING Omar Gonzalez

Hit the ball out of the air or off a high bounce to get used to the timing of the shot.
Until then, I want to give a special shout-out to our Junior Red and Orange Ball Program participants! The talent and commitment displayed by these young individuals truly promise a bright future for RCC. Witnessing their dedication and strong work ethic at such a tender age is truly inspiring.
Aim to where your opponent isn’t & look to end the point on this shot.

You don't have to be a pro or even have tennis experience to have fun with this game. It’s accessible for all ages, and Fall is the perfect time to get started! We’ll walk you through the ins and outs of the game on the next page, so all that’s left for you to do is grab a paddle and join us on the courts-let’s have some fun!
RIVERTON RACQUETS
IN OUR PICKLEBALL ERA
Ripples | 28
pickleball 101 let’s break it down
01
Each rally begins with a serve The game—and each rally—starts with the serve. The player on the right side of the court, facing their opponents, starts the serve. You serve diagonally to your opponent, into the right or left service area:
02 You must serve underhand A serve must be hit with an underhand stroke or backhand with contact below the waist. Your arm must move in an upward arc when you strike the ball. You can hit the ball out of the air or drop the ball on the ground and hit it. The goal of the pickleball serve is to put the ball in play (Quite different from the tennis serve, where the goal is to serve aggressively to win the point.)
03 Each point continues until a fault After the serve, gameplay continues until a “fault” is committed. A fault ends the rally. There are 3 types of faults: The serve does not clear the kitchen (including the line) A shot is hit out of bounds—behind the baseline or outside the sideline A shot is hit into the net
04 You can't volley in the kitchen The 7 ft zone on each side marks the non-volley zone, or 'kitchen'. This means you can never hit a volley while having any part of your body in the kitchen. And you can’t let your momentum carry you into the kitchen after a volley either. Once you play, you’ll see players at the net have a big advantage. They can hit any ball high enough with a downward "smash". This shot puts opponents immediately on the defensive.
Ripples | 29
05 You can hit groundstrokes in the kitchen If your opponent hits a short shot landing in the kitchen, you can enter & hit from the kitchen. Dinks are a defensive shot and an important pickleball strategy. Often your best move after moving into the kitchen to field a dink is to dink right back to your opponent’s kitchen.
06 The ball must bounce on both sides before either team can volley
Before any player can hit a shot out of the air, the ball must bounce once on each side (known as the 'double bounce rule'). So. if your partner is serving and you start at the kitchen, you’re in a dangerous position. Why? Because the returning team can hit a shot right at you, and if you react with a volley, that’s a fault. You lose the point.
07 You only win points on your serve You only win points on your serve, and you continue serving until you lose a rally. After winning each point on your serve, you switch sides with your partner and serve to the other opponent.
08 Both partners serve in a turn In each turn, both players (in doubles) get the opportunity to serve. In scoring, you’ll hear players announce three numbers, "Zero, zero… two". So what the heck is that third number? It tracks which of the two players on a team has the serve. Let’s say the game is tied at 3-3. If you start the serve, you’ll announce “3-3-1,” so everyone knows you are the first player in rotation serving. If you lose the rally, the ball doesn’t go to your opponents. It goes to your teammate who will announce “3-3-2". If your partner loses their serve, a 'side out' occurs in which the ball returns to your opponents who again announce, “3-3-1".
09 first team to 11 wins—but you must win by 2 Following all the rules above, the game continues until one team gets 11 points. The catch? You have to win by 2.
