Weddings Magazine

2016

Every year, we witness the thrilling changes to the wedding industry that make us more excited than ever to be a trusted wedding planning resource for brides and grooms in the Triangle. The sweeping legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States is bringing exciting changes to the way Weddings Magazine and the wedding industry as a whole will operate, and we couldn’t be happier. We have collaborated with some truly incredible North Carolina wedding vendors to bring you what we believe are some of the most impressive pages of inspiration and trends to date, embracing the stunning and unique venues and limitless talent of the Triangle wedding industry. The accomplished Hooman Bahrani with Vesic Photography joined us at the Carolina Inn for our gorgeous flower photo shoot. This venue is a favorite of ours – not only is their hospitality unparalleled, but they constantly hold true to the timelessness and classic appeal that has made them a top-tier venue for decades. We took advantage of the gorgeous new renovations at City Club Raleigh for our cake shoot. With incredible views and gorgeous modern details, this upscale Downtown Raleigh venue elevates their weddings to new heights. Shooting our 2016 fashion editorial at the newly renovated Leslie-Alford-Mims house was a memorable experience for two very special reasons. As a resident of Holly Springs, I would often drive by the historic home and wish for the day when someone would bring it back to life. Walking the halls of the beautifully restored home as the brilliant James Walters captured images of stunning bridal fashion was a dream come true. Equally special is knowing that two passionate industry professionals that we have known for years are the new curators of the space, following their own dream and turning it into the marvelous event venue. Our Styled Shoots gives us the opportunity to watch and facilitate the collaboration between our fantastic advertisers. These shoots create beautiful inspiration, as well as build beneficial relationships between vendors that may not have happened otherwise. This year, our styled shoots brought us to several extraordinary Triangle wedding venues, including The Glass Box, Melrose Knitting Mill, Southern Season of Chapel Hill, and The Wagner House. The beauty of Weddings Magazine lies not only in its inspiring images, but also in the fact that every trend, idea and photo can be credited to a talented Triangle wedding professional that would love to be a part of your special day. We hope that you will utilize this resource as you select the wedding professionals that will plan and execute your dream wedding. Congratulations on your engagement, and on the beginning of a wonderful new chapter in your life!

Robyn

on trend wedding reception trends that are hot now Want to make your wedding truly unforgettable this season? Try some of the hottest trends to put a unique spin on your reception that will have your guests talking for years to come! Your wedding should reflect your personal style, of course, but checking out the latest trends can provide some new ideas. Here are a few hot trends that you might want to consider for your upcoming nuptials. drone photography

Drones have been making headlines for their use in spying programs and conservation efforts, but we’ve also been seeing some amazing photographs coming from GoPros and other drones. Put a spin on the classic bridal party shots by getting an aerial shot or arrange your guests in a heart or circle for a lifelong keepsake photo. This is a great way to capture a photo of all of your guests! Aerial video shots can also get a sweeping view of the couple or the bridal party in motion with the horizon behind them, taking full advantage of venues with fantastic views.

unique venues

While beautiful, the beach and local farms just aren’t as novel as they used to be. If you want to distinguish your event, you can choose unique venues for your reception like a museum, a castle, or even a cave. Of course, you’ll be limited by your location – but with a little creativity, you can find an unexpected and gorgeous reception venue in your region.

34

2015

alternative wedding wear

Plenty of brides are ditching the classic white wedding gown in favor of colorful dresses and those with body-hugging silhouettes. If you really want to shake up the program, ditch the dress all together. Wear a stylish jumpsuit like Solange Knowles did at her wedding. You’ll look just as fierce – like you just stepped off the catwalks. If you don’t like the look of the jumpsuit or feel like you can’t pull it off, try out separates instead. Wear a top and skirt or a top and pants that you like. You can keep everything in white, or mix in metallics or pastels. You can also wear a traditional dress for the wedding and wear the jumpsuit or two-piece for the reception.

unexpected centerpieces

Instead of spending thousands of dollars on overflowing floral arrangements, opt for a more affordable centerpiece that will also make a big impact: Terrariums. Use small fish bowls, tanks, or even lanterns, and fill them with succulents, dried flowers, moss, rocks, and other natural elements. You can

also give these away or reuse them yourself after the reception is over.

stylish food presentations

The way you present the food at your reception can make or break an event. With the right presentation, you’ll leave your guests feeling like they had a true culinary experience. Try out options like serving salads or desserts in martini glasses or mason jars, offering mini versions of foods like hamburgers or hot dogs, desserts in shot glasses, or fries in paper cones. Work with your caterer to brainstorm some interesting presentations that suit your theme.

thereception

Food and dessert bars are another in trend that happy couples are getting excited about. Not just your average buffet or candy bar, but consider a cake bar, ice cream bar or even a pomme frittes bar – it’s all about the toppings and letting each guest create their very own masterpiece!

customized bar menus Across the US, and especially in North Carolina, the beverage scene has witnessed a huge resurgence in craft beers and specialty cocktails. changeyourname

the name change game Congratulations! You have walked down the aisle, said your I Do’s, cut the cake and danced the last dance. What’s next? For most, the first post-wedding to-do (after the honeymoon!) is to begin the daunting task of changing your name. The very first step in changing your moniker is to choose your new name. While tradition often states that the wife drops her maiden name and takes her husband’s name as her new surname, many brides are choosing to replace their middle name with their maiden name, hyphenate their maiden and married names, or even combine both surnames to create a new and unique name! No answer is the right answer for everyone; so choose what is best for you and your new spouse. Once you decide on your new name, there are more than a few steps involved. However, if you are patient and thorough, changing your name will be a breeze!

get your marriage license Before you can change

your name, you will need the original copy of your marriage license. When you apply for a marriage license, the clerk should ask you if you want to change your name. If your new full name is listed on your marriage license, the name changing process will be much easier.

change your name on your social security card To get a new Social Security card, you will need your marriage certificate, birth certificate, a photo ID, and a completed application for a new Social Security card, available online. Once you have the paperwork, you can make an appointment to change your name at the local Social Security office, or you can mail in the documents. A new card should arrive within 10 days of processing.

change your license at the dmv Visit your local DMV office with your current driver’s license, your marriage license, and your social security card to receive a new ID. Avoid going to the DMV during lunch hour, right after work, or on Fridays to save your sanity. change your bank accounts This step is especially important if you plan to share finances in the form of a joint checking account. Visit a local branch office with your documents in hand (drivers license and marriage license) and request a name change on all existing accounts, as well as new checks and new debit and credit cards. cover your bases There are many other places that

you need to notify of your name change. Some only need a phone call; while others require documentation in the form of your new social security card or marriage license, so don’t file it away just yet. Some places to consider include: • • • • • • • • • •

top trends & tips for picking out a gorgeous engagement ring

and wedding band

Engagement rings and wedding bands will be tokens of the love you share with your beloved and the commitment you made to one another to build a life together. As such, many shoppers feel the pressure to select a ring that that their partner will love looking at day after day and year after year. With a little help from the professionals at Diamonds Direct, we have the latest trends and tips in engagement ring and wedding band shopping that will help make getting a “YES!” as easy and stress-free as possible!

hot trends A round solitaire

diamond is traditional and timeless, but current trends are leaning towards unique shapes and stones. According to Ginny Kidd, Marketing Director at Diamonds Direct, “fancy shapes – anything other than a round – are very popular.” Kidd added that oval-cut

couples are resisting tradition and are seeking out alternative materials for both engagement rings and wedding bands. Consider a sapphire, yellow diamond or other colored stone for your engagement ring. Kidd reports that both of these stones, as well as black diamonds, rose gold, and other colored semi-precious stones and metals are popular for both engagement rings and wedding bands, but that white diamonds remain the most favored choice.

other styles

diamonds are particularly fashionable, which also means that they are in short supply. If you or your fiancé-to-be has your heart set on an oval-cut diamond, you’ll need to start shopping early. Other unique looks include marquis, pear, and radiant cut.

colored stones White diamonds are the classic choice, but many

Now more than ever, there are a multitude of alternatives to the simple setting with a solitaire diamond. Filigree settings that have elaborate detail are also timeless and on-trend, with vintage rings and vintage-inspired designs most often featuring filigree motifs. Halo-style rings are still hugely popular, featuring a single diamond surrounded by a ring of smaller diamonds. Mixing metals in engagement rings and wedding bands,

such as white gold with yellow gold or rose gold, is a beautiful way to add interest to a setting without having to choose just one! The icing on the cake is the personal touch of engraving. Choose a special date or phrase that speaks to the love you have for each other. A few favorite sayings include “Forever my Love,” “I Thee Wed,” or “You Have my Heart,” paired with your initials.

Whatever ring you choose, Kidd stresses the importance of doing your research to find out what your fiancé or fiancé-to-be prefers first. Does he or she favor a particular style setting, or are they more concerned with the size or quality of the diamond? “Of course,” Kidd adds, “We absolutely recommend having your fine jewelry insured.” To have a ring insured, have it formally appraised and then submit the documents to your insurance company to be included on your policy. wm

Think

it’s all about the big white dress? Think again! Now, more than ever, modern brides are seeking alternative wedding dress ideas that buck conventionality and speak to who they are as a person - not what someone else tells them they should be. First and foremost, your wedding is about declaring your undying love for your betrothed. Second, it’s about celebrating that love with a fete that represents your personal style from start to finish, and that includes what you wear. It is so important to keep in mind what the day is all about, and that means feeling your absolute best. How can you feel comfortable, and most of all happy, in something that is so far outside of the realm of what you would ever wear? We are here to say DON’T. If you wouldn’t be caught dead in something poofy, white, or even full-length, then by-golly, you shouldn’t have to. Once you have decided that you’re interested in stepping out of bridal land and into the realm of alternative wedding fashion, there are a few things to consider. Will you opt for a unique color? Or choose a silhouette that has been previously under-utilized in bridal fashion? Will you select an alternative material like super sheer lace or luxe velvet? Or will you make your statement with unconventional accessories? The final consideration is the potential pushback. In all likelihood, there will be a family member - MOB, MOG, aunt, or grandmother - that will disagree with your choice to stray from the norm. With a little consideration and compromise, we believe that you can find a gown that incorporates your wedding day style without causing too much judgment from the 50-and-up crowd.

C olor Ever since Queen Victoria opted for a lacy white wedding gown in 1840, brides have stuck by this color for their own nuptials. However, across the globe and throughout history, wedding gowns spanned the spectrum of color. Recently, runway-ready trend has been making the rounds for a few seasons now. Snow white is out, and has been replaced with just about every color of the rainbow. Technically, off-white, ecru and ivory are in the white family, but still make a splash while appeasing the Wedding Day White stalwarts. Opt for one of these shades if you want something just a little different, without stepping too far out of the box.

If you want to step a little further out of the “little white box,” select a pastel or neutral shade. We love seeing blush, beige, and ash in bridal wear. Pastel blue or purple are also radiant and unexpected, but still soft enough to please traditionalists. If you want to leave “the box” in the dust, consider a vibrant print. Many of this season’s most recent collections featured gowns with stunning hand-painted floral silks or dip-dyed trains in a rainbow of shades. 59

Material Satin, silk, chiffon, lace: always classy, always fabulous. However, many alternative textiles have been getting love on the runways and down the aisles lately, creating some truly stunning bridal creations. The lingerie look, with sensual and see-through mesh and barely-there lace are super-sexy and perfect for the bold bride with the confidence to rock it. Consider a more covered-up option for a church ceremony, and then switch into a sexy little number that matches your wild style for the reception. Velvet is luxe and opulent, perfect for a richly hued winter wedding, and its texture creates some magnificent silhouettes. Always perfect for bridal wear, lace isn’t going anywhere. However, we love the trend towards more modern lacee patterns and geometric options for this tried and true wedding favorite. Other mixed materials, like cashmere paired with tulle, or leather and lace are unexpected but emboldened by their contrast.

Silhouette:

The silhouette is where things can get really interesting! Traditionally, the bridal silhouette fell into one category: Floor length gown. Variations included a ball gown skirt versus a flit in flare, or A-line vs. mermaid, and not much more. Today, variations on the modern bridal silhouette have taken a turn for dramatic and edgy. Alternative options like crop tops, jumpsuits, shirt dresses and more have found popularity with designers like Ivy & Aster and Reem Acra. Ever since Solange Knowles rocked a caped white jumpsuit for her wedding, we’ve been in love with this unconventional trend. Jumpsuits are comfortable and effortless, without losing femininity or sexiness. Opt for a white number to still read “bridal” in a fun and fabulous way. A wide legged jumpsuit can have the same dramatic impact as a column gown, but with added ease of movement and extra comfort. Two-pieced ensembles are making a huge

Two-pieced ensembles are making a huge comeback since they ruled the world in the 90’s. Call us crazy, but that tiny inch of skin at the mid-section is super sexy, without giving away two much. Crop tops are fun and right on trend, available in plenty of shapes and textiles. Opt for a long skirt for the ceremony, and then switch into a short party skirt for the reception. Other unconventional silhouettes include short or t-length dresses, capelets, pant suits, high-slits, and dramatic draping. While the traditional white wedding gown is an iconic part of the process, it isn’t for everyone. Fashion-forward mavens should feel just as stylish on their wedding day as they do on a daily basis, so feel free to experiment with shape and color to match your personal aesthetic.

“When I began making bridal gowns, I was intent on creating designs that celebrated strong, independent and creative women,” Belter says. “That ideal was especially influential in the creation of my Astrid & Mercedes line, which launched last year. Through it, I wanted to not only capture the vibrant spirit of my two nieces (for whom the line is named) but to also hopefully inspire them to nurture their own creativity and independence.” Belter shared that the inspiration for her newest line came earlier this year, when she went to the Art Gallery of Ontario with her nieces. “They were so entranced by the impressionist works on display!” she says. “It fascinated them to learn that an art movement could influence the culture at large. I channeled that experience, early 1900’s France, and Claude Debussy’s famous piece, ‘Clair de Lune,’ into the design of my 2016 Astrid & Mercedes gowns.” All of Belter’s gowns are made and finished by hand in her Toronto atelier. Her gowns use luxe fabrics like French Alencon, guipure, re-embroidered

Chantilly lace, silk organza, English net, and silk dupioni. They are accented with details including embroidery, beading, applique, Swarovski crystals and pearls. “Both of my collections are designed with a strong, independent and creative woman in mind, and they are made to help the beauty of the woman wearing them shine through,” Belter shares. “The Lea-Ann Belter bride is a woman who resonates with a timeless aesthetic, has a flair for the dramatic, and appreciates clean, modern design. An Astrid & Mercedes bride is plucky and a bit unconventional. She’s drawn to playful, airy design.” Lea-Ann Belter wedding gowns are sold throughout the United States and Canada. In North Carolina, you can find her beautiful gowns in Raleigh at Traditions by Anna and in Charlotte at Ladies of Lineage. You can also preview her designs, including her new Astrid & Mercedes and Avalon collections, and learn more about her at her website, Lea-AnnBelter.com. wm

Lea-Ann Belter started creating her signature bridal gowns 25 years ago, but she had dabbled with design much earlier than that. After studying textiles and later fashion design, she began working with a couturier and honing her craft. Belter discovered her love for wedding gown design when she made her first wedding dress for her brother’s fiancé. Soon after, she opened her first boutique in Toronto.

the news in shoes Amy Kiszely of Maggi Bridal and Maggi Maids spends her days helping brides find the perfect wedding dress, but what about the shoe? This weddingwear expert shared some of her favorite trends for wedding shoes, and why she believes that footwear matters just as much as the gown. “Over the past year or two, we have noticed that the bridal shoe has become more and more important to our brides,” says Amy. Call it a trend, or thank the obligatory “shoe pic,” but the industry has seen a big jump in wedding shoe style, and we couldn’t be happier. Your wedding day look should represent your personal style from head to toe, and that includes your shoes! Gone are the days of the simple satin ivory pump. “We have noticed a trends in shoes, especially within the last year, that our brides are wanting something different and unique - nothing like the classic bridal shoe. We’ve been seeing so many more colors, sparkles, and types from flats, high-tops, heels, wedges, cowboy boots, the list goes on and on,” says Amy. One of our favorite shoe trends is letting your shoes be your “something blue.” This is a fun and flirty way to add a pop of color to your wedding day look, as well as a nod to the time honored tradition. Amy also shared one of her favorite quotes by the one and only Christian Louboutin: “Shoes transform your body language and attitude. They lift you up physically and emotionally.” On your wedding day, you are already on Cloud 9, so the perfect pair of shoes will only elevate you higher! wm 78

the perfect pre-wedding outfit When you’re planning your wedding, the dress that is most often on your mind is THE dress – your wedding dress. It’s what sets the tone for the entire wedding. It’s what will be the centerpiece of every photo. It’s what you will (maybe) pass down to your daughter to wear at her wedding one day. Your wedding rehearsal will be a chance for you to spend time with friends and family in a more casual environment and warm up for the festivities the next day. You have a lot more flexibility with the outfit you choose for your rehearsal dinner, allowing you to express more of your personal style and have some fun. Here are some things to consider:

tone of the event The tone of your event will determine the kind of outfit you need, but don’t limit yourself to the traditional choices. For example, just because your rehearsal dinner is formal doesn’t mean that you have to wear an evening gown. You could wear a sequined jumpsuit or even a nice pantsuit. Match the tone but don’t limit your individuality. style of the wedding dress

Your rehearsal dress shouldn’t match your wedding dress to a T. In fact, it shouldn’t be anything like your wedding dress at all. It should show off a different side of your personality and your style. If you are wearing a strapless ball gown for your big day, consider a short, clingy number for the rehearsal. Experiment with different colors, styles, and lengths for some variation in your wedding weekend look. 82

Weddings Magazine

2015

colors Unlike the wedding recep-

tion, your rehearsal dress doesn’t need to coordinate with the theme of the rehearsal dinner. Instead, you have the opportunity to experiment with color. Try to avoid the popular, little black dress and wear something colorful and fun instead. You don’t have to choose neon or bold colors. Even pastels can offer something off of the beaten path.

accessories Accessories can make

or break a look, so don’t limit your search to the dress itself. The right accessories can transform a look from drab to fab. You can dress up a simple frock with some flashy diamond or imitation jewelry. Or, you can take the edge off of a formal look with some chunky, boho-inspired jewelry that gives it a bit more of your own style. Layered accessories can create an edgy look, or paring down your jewelry to a few simple pieces can make your look more sophisticated. Shop for accessories while you are shopping for your dress so you can get an idea of the total package before you commit. If you have some pieces from your own collection that you know you’ll want to wear, bring them with you while you shop.

fit and feel We often overlook

how we feel in the dress when we’re shopping – focusing instead on how fabulous we look. But if we don’t feel good in a dress, we won’t look good in it either. When you are comfortable, you will walk taller, smile more, and be generally more energetic, and that will shine through in the way you look. If you feel awkward and uncomfortable, you will look more unhappy and reserved, which will detract from your natural beauty. Make sure that any dress you choose not only fits well, but also makes you feel comfortable and confident. For example, if a shorter dress makes you feel self-conscious about your legs, opt for a longer skirt or even a slimming and trendy jumpsuit. You deserve to feel your very best, and that means choosing a dress that brings out your best features and makes you feel like a goddess. Your rehearsal dinner may only be a warm up to the big day, but it is still an important part of your wedding festivities, and you’ll remember it forever in your memories and your photographs. Make sure you pick the right dress to look and feel your absolute best. wm

Jennifer &Alex The best proposals are when the bride-to-be is taken completely by surprise! Such was the case with Jennifer and Alex, who got engaged surrounded by beautiful holiday decorations in Denver, Colorado. Although there was a crowd of people cheering them on when she said yes, Jennifer says she couldn’t hear a thing as she was already on Cloud Nine! The couple wanted a wedding that was just as grand as their love for one another, and Prestonwood Country Club provided the perfect setting with its stunning ballroom and jaw-dropping chandeliers. One portion of the ballroom hosted the all-white ceremony, complete with a flowered chuppah, romantic candlelight and grand floral arrangements that were adorned with hanging crystals to mimic the chandeliers above. Jennifer recalls, “I was filled with so much emotion when I saw my husband standing at the end of the aisle. Also, seeing my bridesmaids and groomsmen at the aisle, some of them I had known since childhood, and knowing the support they had for us was overwhelming. I felt so much love and support, knowing those people were there to support us in our marriage. That truly was an overwhelming and wonderful feeling that I won’t ever forget.” The event transformed into a regal, but vibrant reception with a color palette of lavender, plum, white, green and gold. To capture Jennifer’s vision of “sparkly and classically beautiful,” Monica Noa of Nouveau events used dramatic lighting to create a party atmosphere, with centerpieces to highlight the chandeliers and grandiose space. Tables were adorned with tall, white centerpieces while low arrangements featured calla lily, hydrangea and roses for drama and variation. Linens alternated between plum and ivory sequins, with an ivory crush linen for guest tables and 84

champagne rosette linens for the head tables. Place settings included gold chargers, gold flatware, and plum napkins. A custom dinner menu was added to each setting. Guests were served a signature cocktail called, “Where the Buffalo Roam,” in monogrammed stemless glasses. This drink is the same recipe as the cocktail that the couple enjoyed the night of their engagement. As a late night snack, guests were served the couple’s favorite spring rolls, and departed with gourmet chocolate bars from a Charleston chocolatier. The couple also used the fete to celebrate their recent graduations from dentistry school. Having so many amazing milestones to enjoy, the bride and groom were grateful to share their special day with so many loved ones.

Beth Ann &Al Beth Ann and Al’s “Boy Meets Girl” love story is as classic and beautiful as their lovely North Carolina Wedding. Both were living in Chicago, having relocated from different parts of the United States. Beth Ann was moving into her new apartment building when she noticed Al as she was carrying boxes up to the second floor. She immediately texted her best friend saying “at least the apartment has cute neighbors!” A few months later, after some casual hellos in the hallway, Al’s roommate invited Beth Ann and her friend over for a few drinks. Little did she know that since the day she had moved in, Al had been referring to her as “Dream Girl.” The rest, as they say, is history. The pair spent every day together exploring, eating, and drinking their way through the city of Chicago, and quickly falling in love. Whiskey and White Events helped plan and execute Beth Ann and Al’s classic Americana wedding at Haywood Hall in Raleigh. Emily describes the couple’s style as “timeless and classically elegant,” and we couldn’t agree more. Preppy white and navy was the palette for the day, with florals in simple green and white. Eucalyptus cascaded across the center of each table with stately white tapers, creating a look that was equally ethereal and chic. The couple’s fun spirit showed in the form of adorable gold balloons spelling out “I Do,” as well as custom signage reading “Can I get a witness?” that directed guests to the ceremony site.

Julie &Kyle When Kyle and Julie decided to tie the knot, they knew that there was only one person that they could trust to plan and execute their dream wedding. Cathy Anna is the owner of Cathy Anna Weddings and Events and has a special relationship with the couple - Kyle is Cathy Anna’s “Bonus Son by Marriage,” as the planner fondly refers to him. The color scheme of the event was slate blue with coral and gold accents. Shabby chic and vintage details were abundant in this stunning wedding at Grandover Resort, including old books, lace, and delicate florals. Cathy Anna created numerous vignettes throughout the space to “transport guests to an older place in time,” with a few modern touches. A family legacy wall was displayed at the entryway, using antique shutters to hang photographs of both sides of the family, some dating back to the 1800’s! Farm and Filigree provided additional unique rental items to continue this theme of “legacy.” An adorable vintage typewriter showed a message for guests, with instructions to sign the couple’s guestbook. A custom structure created by Cathy Anna Weddings and Events served as the altar to create a romantic and elegant focal point, draped in white fabric and down-lit with its own five-arm chandelier. It was accented with open wood frames, as a nod to the bride’s education in fine art. Stunning floral arrangements by Blossom Floral Artistry flanked the alter, where the bride and groom said “I Do,” while a restored dresser anchored the space and was decorated with books, small arrangements and cigar boxes. The entire room was up-lit in soft white for the ceremony, then transformed as the lighting changed to soft blue for the reception. 92

Gold candlesticks, cigar boxes, pearls, flowers and books made each guest table unique. A four tiered cake created by Party Delights was another stunning focal point. The cake featured exquisitely executed lace and pearl details, along with a completely edible antique cameo accent. Guests left the event with beautiful memories, as well as hand-poured teacup candles and homemade pralines, displayed in a restored 1942 china hutch. In true-vintage style, the couple said their goodbyes to a send-off of DIY Victorian streamer wands.

Carolyn &Aaron In true North Carolina fashion, this Triangle couple met at a celebration for a UNC athletics win. Also in true North Carolina fashion, they are a house divided. Aaron, a Carolina fan, and Carolyn a Duke fan, made their relationship official on November 23, 2009, when Carolyn wrote him a classic “Will you be my boyfriend? Check Yes or No” note. Carolyn got her own chance to say “yes” when Aaron proposed on a snowy Valentine’s Day morning in 2014. The couple found C & D Events while searching for a wedding coordinator, and then stumbled upon their blog where they found the plans for The Bradford, a spectacular new wedding venue in New Hill, NC. “After speaking with Courtney and Dana, we realized we had great chemistry with them and loved how down to earth they were. We wanted to invest in their dream as well as ours and we quickly placed our faith in them,” said Carolyn. While the Bradford was nothing but framing and mud at the time, the happy couple knew that this was the venue for them. To match the neutral and airy feel of the space, the team stuck with a palette of ivory and gold with touches of blush and hunter green. The bride described her wedding theme as “Jay Gatsby partying at his French-styled summer house in the North Carolina Countryside.” C & D Events brought it all together with their floral design and rental selection, and created a Pin-spired custom ceremony background with vertically hung market lights! Repurposed wine bottles with tapered candles, and delicate flowers on top of square mirrors made for simple and elegant arraignments, while a marquis “A&C” further satisfied the bride’s love of Edison bulbs. Perfectly styled vignettes were ethereal and purposeful, making for a truly stunning event. 96

The biggest hiccup of the day was a wardrobe malfunction that caused the first-look photos to be scrapped, which was actually a blessing in disguise. Carolyn says that her absolute favorite moment of the day was seeing Aaron for the first time at the ceremony, and the memory of his face when he saw her is priceless to her now.

Jessica &Neil Jessica and Neil’s love story began five and a half years ago when they met at UNC-W during their freshman year. They quickly became friends, and soon began to realize that it was something more. After graduation, the couple moved to Raleigh to start their new life together, each pursuing their own dreams. They bought their first home together, where Neil proposed last fall. The couple knew that they wanted to hold both the ceremony and reception on Duke University grounds, but wanted a different ambiance for each event. They chose the Terrace Gardens for their afternoon outdoor ceremony because of its natural beauty and romantic garden feel, and selected the Doris Duke Center for their indoor reception. Jessica wore an ivory lace gown and carried a teardrop shaped bouquet of soft white hydrangeas, blush and pale peach roses, lavender and seasonal blooms, and accents of dusty miller and gold. After the couple exchanged their vows, the guests moved from the ceremony site to a tented cocktail hour, where they enjoyed an open bar, imported cheeses, and passed hors d’oeuvres, including the grooms favorite: a Carolina grit cake topped with North Carolina collard green pesto. Jennifer V. event design and planning worked with the bride to execute a natural, simple and romantic ambiance for the reception. Tables were covered in soft mint green linens, with large centerpieces of ivory, blush and lavender blooms with natural greenery. The combination created a clean and traditional look with a chic, modern palette. The three-tiered chocolate chip cake had a cannoli cream filling and was iced with white buttercream, and topped with fresh flowers for an additional pop of color.

Jodi &Adam Wedding planner Amelia Davey of When in White credits Jodi and Adam’s original personalities and real love for creating the energy behind this beautiful real wedding. The couple wanted excitement, warmth and fun at their special day, offering their guests a comfortable and joyous experience. The ceremony was held at the Virginia Dare Ballroom at Sir Walter Apartments in downtown Raleigh. This gorgeous and expansive historic space was the perfect backdrop for their vows. The couple’s dog, King, stole the show as the “Dog of Honor” and ring bearer. Jodi and Adam had a unique unity ceremony, blending their favorite red and white wines as a symbol of their union. Sitti, with its exposed brick and chic ambiance, was the perfect location for this warm and inviting reception. The interior Jiddi space hosted a delicious dinner by the acclaimed Lebanese restaurant, and was filled with ivy and romantic lighting courtesy of When in White. The centerpieces were created by the bride and featured wine bottles filled with fairy lights, vines, and a splash of gold and blush for the perfect touch of glamour. Outside in the urban courtyard at Sitti, the crowd danced the night away to music by Marcus Ward of Morse entertainment. A tent was decorated with market lights, giving the illusion of dancing under the stars. The party paused briefly for a stirring rendition of a Blues Brothers ballad by Adam and his best man to the delight of their guests.

Erica &Ken Erica DeLong spends a lot of time in the public eye (and ear!) as co-host on G105’s Bob & The Showgram. So when it came to planning their wedding, Erica and Ken (AKA Boston) knew they wanted something intimate and laid back that was simply a celebration of their love – just like their engagement. On New Year’s Eve, Ken sent Erica a message to meet him at Duke Gardens for a surprise proposal. Erica left the nail salon to meet him, and found him at the end of a trail of heart-shaped balloons; standing on the bridge surrounded by rose petals and chilled champagne. He asked, and she of course said yes, and her only regret was that she had zipped out of the salon – still in her pajamas! The bride met Linda and Bruce, the owners of The Barn at Woodlake Meadows, at the NC State Fair and hit it off right away. After much encouragement from her wedding planner, Jill of JMADE Weddings, Erica decided to tour their venue and immediately fell in love with the amazing property. Vows were exchanged by the pond in front of a stunning backdrop of cascading wildflowers created by Blossom Floral Artistry. The couple made simple and beautiful promises of love, with Ken’s father and Erica’s sister by their side. After the ceremony, Erica changed into a lovely bohemian chic dress and traded her veil for a floral crown. The reception inside the barn was elegant and classic without being pretentious or stuffy - exactly what the bride wanted. Navy pin tuck linens and ivory runners adorned farm tables, with vineyard chairs and gold, formal accents in the and decor. Brightly colored florals by Blossom Floral 108

A delicious meal was created by the always-amazing Rocky Top Catering, and the “naked cake” topped with magenta roses served as a sweet dessert. With so many wonderful personalities in attendance, the party was lively and fun with plenty of dancing and revelry, including a special rendition of the “whip and ne-ne” by the bridal party! Other evening entertainment featured s’mores at the fire pit and an incredible fireworks display by the wedding venue. The sparkler exit sent the newlyweds off to their on-site wedding suite, along with their sweet pup Lucy! The natural beauty of the surroundings and an incredible team of vendors went above and beyond to give this bride and groom their dream “fairy tale wedding.”

the perfect proposal A wedding proposal isn’t just about getting to the “Yes.” The way you propose will become the story that you and your fiancé tell your friends and family dozens of times after you announce your engagement. It will be the story that you one day tell your children and your grandchildren – you have to make this one count! That means you need to put a little more thought into it to make sure it’s a story you’ll be proud to tell for generations.

choose a sentimental location A romantic dinner just

before you pop the question is a nice touch, but a romantic dinner at the place you had your first date is even better. A sentimental location will make the proposal extra special by giving it meaning from your shared experiences. Consider proposing at the place where you first saw your beloved, where you first realized you were in love, or where you shared your first kiss. The more unexpected the place, the better. For example, if you were classmates, you might consider proposing by the swing set where you played together at recess or during a high school football game – on the scoreboard, maybe even getting the hometown crowd involved. A unique place will have meaning only to you as a couple and be part of your love story.

make it particular to your relationship and personalities

Not everyone wants a sappy proposal with the bended knee and grand speech. Your proposal should be as unique as your relationship and the personality of your partner. For example, if you and your intended love hiking you might

consider proposing by a waterfall after a challenging hike. If you are both into comedy, you might perform an openmic set and finish it with the proposal. You plan to spend the rest of your life with this person. You should know them well enough to know their love language and what will speak best to them.

consider a group proposal

Many people plan a private moment for their proposal – a romantic dinner, a secluded walk, or a view from a scenic vista. Then they call their friends and family in excitement to share the big news. However, some of the most romantic proposals can actually include your friends and family. Get them in on the plan by having them bring your loved one to a surprise location, to deliver special items for your proposal, or to spell out letters for your big ask. You can even do a big show number with a song and dance, of which there are many, many examples on YouTube. The point is that you are not limited. With the more people involved, you can get more creative ideas and you can make your proposal a fun, family memory for everyone.

pop the question first Many

people plan an evening of activities that culminate in the proposal. Plan for your proposal to be one of the first things you do. Then have a night of activities planned in celebration. Those activities will be that much more memorable, and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy yourself.

hire a photographer One of

the most special moments in a relationship often is left to only our memories. You’re too busy popping the question, and your new fiancé will busy gushing with happiness. Hire a photographer to capture that special moment, and you will treasure those photographs for years to come. Having a photographer on hand may be tricky if you are in an isolated location and are alone. Your photographer can brainstorm possibilities with you for capturing the moment without giving away the surprise. With a little planning, your proposal will be one of the best moments of your life and will become a story you want to share with everyone you know. These tips can help you plan a swoon-worthy proposal that will give your marriage a beautiful start. wm

tips for addressing Addressing envelopes can be one of the most headache-inducing wedding tasks – there are many rules of etiquette and protocol involved that it iseasy to get overwhelmed for fear of offending any of your wedding guests. If you opt for the more traditional route, be sure to follow these steps to ensure your envelopes are properly labeled.

1. Abbreviations should be written out.

For example, use Street instead of St., North Carolina instead of NC, and Apartment instead of Apt. 2. Use proper titles.

4. Make it clear whether or not the person you are inviting has a plus one.

If you would like them to bring a guest, use: Outer Envelope:

As a rule, address people in the manner that they choose to be addressed i.e. Dr., Rev., and Gen., and Ms. or Miss. Also, be sure to include credentials such as M.D. or Ph.D. when applicable.

Inner Envelope:

3. Take advantage of outer and inner envelopes. The outer envelope should be addressed to the general household. For example:

Make an effort to learn the name of their guests, especially if they are engaged, living in the same house, or seeing each other on an exclusive basis.

Mr. and Mrs. David Beckham While the inner envelope will specifically name those invited, including children. Mr. and Mrs. Beckham Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper

114

Weddings Magazine

2015

Miss Taylor Swift

Miss Swift and Guest

5. If a couple is married, the outer envelope should read:

Mr. and Mrs. Brad Pitt

If you are inviting an unmarried couple, list the name of the person you know best, regardless of sex. If you know them both equally, list in alphabetical order. Mrs. Oprah Winfrey and Mr. Stedman Graham 6. Treat same-sex couples the same way you would heterosexual couples.

The same rules of etiquette apply for couples of the same sex, married or unmarried. 7. Every guest over 18 should receive their own invitation. 8. Don’t forget the return address and postage!

The address of the person collecting RSVPs should go on the back-flap of the envelope and traditionally, no names are mentioned. Also, be sure to include postage for the RSVP cards to avoid burdening your guests with acquiring and paying for stamps.

second time around It is becoming increasingly prevalent that many weddings are not the first time down the aisle for brides or grooms, and etiquette for the second weddings is a little different than the first time around. From guests to gifts, there are a few unwritten rules about saying “I do” part two. Wedding dress When it comes to what to wear, the big question on everyone’s mind: Is white alright? Well, no (and yes!) Depending on the circumstances, white can be all right. If you are a traditional gal, etiquette states that you should go with a cream or off-white gown. However, these days, pretty much anything goes. DO expect the older crowd to whisper if you decide to go with white, but summed up, it’s your special day so go with your preference. 126

Guest expectations Who to invite? Chances are good that you and your first husband or wife share many of the same friends - you may even still be close to some of his family. So, who is it ok to invite and who to leave out? It’s another circumstantial decision. You may be best friends with your ex’s sister, so is it ok to invite her? Yes, send out invitations to whomever you like. If they are too uncomfortable to attend, they will make an excuse. How to handle Gifts Many of the guests at this wedding may have attended your first, so are they expected to buy you another wedding gift and if so, exactly what do they get you? Chances are good that you will receive a gift on a smaller scale, but your expectations shouldn’t be high. It is okay to register for gifts, but don’t go crazy or anticipate getting that LCD TV! wm

vow writing 101 Writing your own wedding vows may seem intimidating, but a few easy steps can help you find the right words to say why – and how – you will love your spouse for the rest of your life. While composing your own vows is by no means mandatory, it is a deeply personal choice that you and your fiancé should make together. Once you have made the decision to pen your own wedding promises, begin by following these simple steps.

get on the same page It is

important to first have a conversation with your fiancé about the tone and formality of your vows. If you are each writing your own, make sure that you are in agreement about structure and length, and whether or not you will share them with each other beforehand. Also, confirm that your officiant and/or ceremony space allow personal vows in lieu of traditional ones. Your officiant may also have a few helpful tips to get the ball rolling!

do your research To get started,

we suggest reading as many other examples of vows that you can get your hands on. Write down things you like and take note of things you don’t. This will serve as your inspiration and starting point. Don’t be afraid to borrow words, phrases and quotes that speak

128

to your heart– there’s no such thing as plagiarism in vow writing!

put pen to paper The hardest

part about writing anything is getting started. Begin by jotting down all of your thoughts, words and ideas. This allows you to better organize your intentions and make early edits. If you are having a difficult time, write down the answers to questions like, “Why do you love this person?” “When did you first realize that they were the one?” and “What does marriage mean to you?” Continue by making promises, both big and small (they are called vows after all), detailing the solemn declarations of love and support that you will give your future spouse.

edit. practice. repeat. If you are comfortable sharing your vows

beforehand, find a friend or family member that you trust to make edits and suggestions. Your first draft is rarely your last, so practice speaking your vows aloud to assess the flow and length. Vows should be kept between one and two minutes – and no longer. Once you have your final draft nailed down, continue to practice until you are comfortable enough to look away from your paper while reciting them, but keep a note card with you on the day of, just in case! wm

“Natasha & Matthew were hoping for snow on their wedding day and it arrived in amazing fashion. Most brides would insist on a coat, but Natasha barely showed a goosebump, even though the wind was bringing temps down into the low 20s in the photo. Vesic.com

boudoir photography It is becoming more and more common for couples to give each other a special gift to celebrate their nuptials. A nice piece of jewelry is common for the bride, as is a watch or something sports related for the groom. However, if you are looking for something truly unique that your husband-to-be will love, you should skip the jewelry and other items that will likely be gone within a few years and give the gift of boudoir photography instead.

“Boudoir photography” is a fancy way of saying “sexy photography.” No, you aren’t nude. There’s nothing pornographic about the pictures. Instead, you are wearing beautiful lingerie and striking a seductive pose. Most brides-to-be spring for professional hair and makeup, as well, so that they can look their very best. The photos are great for both you and your groom: You will love looking back at the photos of yourself when you were young and felt your most beautiful, and your groom will love to remember you as you were when you first started your lives together. “A boudoir session not only creates gorgeous, sexy images for the groom, 148

but it is an awesome experience for the bride as well,” said Cari Long of Hush Boudoir Photography.

“Most clients are a bit nervous when they come to their session, but they end up walking out giving me a big hug and telling me how much fun they had!” You can also have fun with how you give the album to your groom-to-be. For example, you can ask a bridesmaid to slip him the album while he’s getting ready, then he’ll have that contrasting image of you when he sees you walking down the aisle. He won’t be able to wait for the wedding night! However you decide to give him the album, one thing is clear: Your man won’t forget these images or how beautiful you look to him now. wm

A wedding video isn’t just another cost. It’s an investment. Cherish each memory. Relive every moment. olderoad.com

not your parents’ wedding video We’ve all seen it: the grainy, spliced together video tape of our parents’ wedding with sound that may or may not match up to the action. Luckily, the craft and industry surrounding wedding videography has come a long way since our parents said “I Do.” With updates in technology and a trend towards social sharing, “wedding videography” has transformed into something more along the lines of “wedding video production,” where a talented team of professionals captures all of your wedding day, and edits them into a unique film. According to Ella Clarke, co-owner of Olde Road Studios , recent changes in camera and editing technology are the biggest reason for a change in the industry. “DSLR cameras can capture footage at a film-like quality, which brings a cinema-style look and feel to videos. 150

Weddings Magazine

2016

For brides, this means a wedding video that tells a beautiful and individualized story in the form of a high-quality digital film. Speaking of digital, Ella adds that their company is seeing less of an interest in couples owning physical copies of their videos. “It’s actually more important that the video exists online – be it Vimeo, YouTube or Facebook. It’s about being able to share their story with friends and family.” When researching your videographer, be sure to examine your personal style and match that to the style of wedding and wedding film you are hoping to have. “There are some companies out there who see wedding videos as a ‘churnand-burn’ production, where they apply a paint-by-numbers type of technique to their product,” warns Ella. “That’s going to result in a very uninspired video. Brides need to look for a company that prioritizes individuality and uniqueness into this way of storytelling.” wm

best boutonnieres Wedding day accessories aren’t just for the ladies! Grooms and their fellas need a little accoutrement as well, usually in the form of a dapper boutonniere. Coming from the French word for “buttonhole,” there are many theories about where these adornments came from. But whether they originated at ancient Egyptian sporting events or on the English battlefield, the tradition took hold at formal events at the turn of the 19th century, when the world acquired a taste for pomp and circumstance. Only a few rules of etiquette apply to boutonnieres. Specifically, that they should be worn on the left side, that the grooms should be different from the rest of the wedding party, and it should complement or match the brides bouquet. Outside of these three guidelines, the possibilities are limitless. So why not try these unique ideas for buttonhole blooms!

funky finds Tinker with the idea

of adding unique objects or trinkets into your groom’s boutonniere. Brass keys, vintage hatpins, or other notions are just a few charming options.

desert blooms Succulents are

right on trend, and make a gorgeous addition to any lapel. Their cool tones pair beautifully with dusty sage and lavender. If these hot weather flowers make an appearance in your bouquet, don’t hesitate to make them the centerpiece of your groom’s boutonniere!

aromatic additions A sprig

of something scented is a lovely way to accent a boutonniere and keep the gents feeling fresh! Herbaceous elements like rosemary or sage offer earthy perfumes, while a stick of cinnamon or eucalyptus provide soothing and delicate aromas.

fruits of love Seasonal fruits

and other edibles make for colorful additions to any boutonniere! Fancy a festive winter wedding? Deep red holly berries or mistletoe are darling. For a sunnier affair, source miniature citruses such as vibrant, tiny tangerines or kumquats! wm

natural selection Pull unique

elements from nature to add a truly personal touch to your boutonnieres. Use cotton to pay homage to your southern roots, dried hops or wheat to reference a shared love of craft beer, or a sprig of pine to profess your love for Sweet Carolina.

wedding cake do’s & don’ts Do have a budget in mind. Generally, the wedding cake is priced by the slice and varies between bakers, ranging from $3 a slice to as much as $30 based on design and other additions. Keep in mind that more flavors, decorations and things like sugar flowers and fondant will add up to a big budget dessert. Bonus: Whether you factor the cake-cutting fee into your cake budget or catering budget, don’t forget to include that cost as well! Don’t choose a cake too early. You will want the cake to be the “icing” on your wedding day style, so wait until major elements are chosen so you can choose a design that is cohesive and complementary. Do consider the space. Does your venue have grand 20-foot ceilings? If so, be sure that your cake height matches the grandiose nature of your venue. Consider using columns or Styrofoam tiers to bolster the height and give extra impact. Don’t miss out on taste-testing. What other time in your life can you try as many kinds of cake as your heart desires? Take advantage of this time in your life to try new flavors and fillings, and find one (or more!) that you and your guests will love. Do spotlight your cake. The wedding cake is a showpiece of your reception. Be sure to give it the spotlight it deserves by placing it in a visible location with beautiful linens and flowers to match your wedding style. Don’t forget the Topper! Once your design is in place, choose the perfect wedding cake topper. Gone are the days of the kitschy plastic bride and groom. This is an ideal place to showcase something that speaks to your personality as a couple. Options include custom

180

Weddings Magazine

2015

monograms or darling figurines, or laser cut phrases like “happily ever after” or “best day ever.” This is also a lovely place to showcase your “something old,” if you have a beautiful cake topper that has been passed down through generations, or even a beautiful brooch or heirloom jewelry. Do have a plan. It is imperative that your vendors know when and where to bring your wedding cake to avoid moving it as much as possible. If you do not have a wedding planner, be sure that your day of coordinator is responsible for managing the logistics and guiding them to the proper location. Don’t skip a slice! Outside of the one bite the couple feeds to each other (or smashes in each other’s faces), couples often miss out on tasting their own wedding cakes. Designate someone to box up a few slices for you to enjoy as a last night snack or morning-after brunch. Do consider the climate. If your cake is indoors, this is less of a factor. However, if you are hosting an outdoor reception be sure to avoid delicate icings like whipped cream, meringue, and buttercream to prevent a melty mess. Ask your baker for warm weather options or choose fondant, which doesn’t require refrigeration. Don’t suffer through freezer burn. Eating year-old frozen cake on your first anniversary may be tradition, but it hardly sounds appetizing. Many bakers offer a free anniversary cake as an added bonus. If not, consider splurging on a cake of the same flavor to treat yourselves for surviving one year of wedded bliss. wm

get your groove on After you’ve said the “I Do”s and you’ve taken all the family photos, it’s time to celebrate your big day with great food and lots of dancing. You’ll have the first dance with you and your new partner, traditionally followed by the father-daughter dance and the mother-son dance. Of course, there will be much dancing throughout the night as the party gets going. You can always wrap your arms around each other and sway from side to side, but if you want to make things a bit more interesting, learn a few dance moves. Here are the five top dance moves you should learn for your wedding reception.

at weddings has not waned. It would be more surprising to attend a wedding that did not play “The Electric Slide” than one that did. It’s an easy dance that just about everyone knows how to do and is easy to pick up for those who don’t.

waltz The waltz is perfect for the first dance. In fact, it’s the dance that couples learn when they sign up for ballroom dance lessons before they get married. It’s easy to learn and ideally suited to the majority of songs chosen for a first dance.

When the party seems to be waning and no one is on the dance floor, just ask the DJ to put on “The Electric Slide” and watch as everyone jumps up to dance.

The waltz is sometimes known as a box step. It requires four steps that form a box with your feet. When you feel comfortable, you can make it a bit more fancy by moving the box around the floor and adding dips and twirls. But even if you stick to the basic box, you’ll still look like you know what you’re doing and will put on a better “performance” during your big dance.

electric slide

The electric slide is at least 30 years old, but its popularity

cupid shuffle For a hipper, updated line dance, try out the cupid shuffle. It’s another one that will get people up on their feet, and it’s more appropriate for younger crowds. Even people who don’t know the dance will get up and try it because they can sink into the anonymity of the crowd all doing the dance together. whip/nae nae

One of the latest dance crazes right now is the Whip/Nae Nae. Little girls have been strutting their stuff to the song all over YouTube, and celebrities ranging from Miley

Cyrus to Hillary Clinton have been showing off their moves. The moves are easy, and the song has a slow beat, making the dance accessible to most people. Even those who don’t really like to dance will love getting up to this song. Like the cupid shuffle, the song essentially calls out the moves.

chicken dance

The chicken dance is one of the most annoying wedding traditions, but it is a nearly indestructible one. Even if you try to ban it at your wedding, your guests will ask for it, and protest loudly if they don’t get it. Fortunately, the chicken dance is another easy one to learn, and it will get all your guests on the dance floor. Learning some of these dances for your wedding will get you moving and add some fun to your celebration. You’ll also lead the charge for your guests, encouraging them to get up and dance. With everyone dancing together, you’ll create fun memories, as well as some great pictures. wm

A Tuscan-Inspired intimate wedding

There is something to be said about a truly intimate wedding: Strip down a guest list to the bare minimum and it becomes a truly unique celebration of real love and family. This exquisite wedding at Melrose Knitting Mill did just that. With only 16 guests, the bride and groom were able to relax, soak it all in, and enjoy the small handful of people that mean the most to them.

Whiskey & White Events began planning this Italian-inspired fete by embracing the rustic elegance of the Melrose Knitting Mill. With its exposed terracotta brick and clean details, the venue was the perfect location for a Tuscan ceremony and reception. She chose to begin the tablescape with a crisp white linen, topped with dusty lavender placemats. Rose gold flatware (to match the inside of the bride’s ring) was paired with Provencal white dinnerware, all provided by Classic Party Rentals Raleigh. Hammered rose gold napkin rings enveloped traditional Italian printed napkins sourced from Tuscany.

This sunning confection featured a gold brocade design on top of clean ivory and purple. Above the table was an incredible custom structure hanging from the ceiling and covered with three magnificent arrangements by Purple Poppy Florist. This explosive floral display of mums, foliage, and roses in shades of pink and mustard yellow created the perfect focal point for the room, while still allowing guests to see each other and converse throughout the meal (as Italians are wont to do!).

The guests reveled in each other’s company and celebrated the bride and groom in a way that is only possible at a truly intimate wedding.

Beginning with a black and white color scheme, vibrant green was added for a playful spin on a mod palette. Noa opted for clean lines everywhere, with angular black plates atop crisp white linen, paired with geometric glasses and matte black flatware. Chameleon chairs were topped with white ruffled chair covers for the perfect touch of femininity. Blossom Floral Artistry designed architectural arrangements using achromatic white orchids and calla lilies paired with lively greenery in various mirrored and lacquered containers for a modern look.

Around the room were examples of the couple’s sense of fun in the form of signage created by Grid Creative Studio, who focuses on custom paper and event branding. Signs such as “Alcohol, because no good story ever started with a salad” were evidence of the couple’s humor, and their unified look gave the event a sense of cohesion. Custom name cards were pinned to perfectly green pears, and chic square menus detailed a delicious menu from Empire Eats Catering. Chef Joel Dobson created a fantastic menu of Empire Eats favorites from their top restaurants Sitti, Gravy, and The Pit. A first course of Gravy’s bruschetta shrimp cocktail was followed by the Empire Eats Salad, while the third course included traditional Lebanese Samkeh Harra, a sesame fish, baby back ribs from the pit and sides of roasted green beans and an interactive mashed potato bar.

Brunch & Bubbles: A new take on a Bridal Shower at Southern season

At a traditional bridal shower, guests come with gift in hand off a registry already created by the bride. But for this darling “Brunch & Bubbly” shower, Kristen invited her ladies to come to Weathervane to enjoy an amazing meal, and then help her choose her favorite items from Southern Season for her registry! C and D Events styled a perfectly preppy event for the celebration with just the right amount of whimsy and glamour. Rentals from American Party Rentals were selected to match the bride’s fun-loving personality and swank style. A dashing royal blue linen was topped with a mod pink and grey runner, and chic gold flatware was paired with clean and modern table settings for their delectable brunch. A menu by the Weathervane included perfectly charred salmon atop southern succotash and an elegant twist on classic shrimp cocktail. Sweet treats were abundant, with a decadent naked cake and a magnificent dessert bar of macaroons, cake pops, cupcakes and more from Southern Season.

Southern Season also provided the magnificent pops of color in the form of lush flowers decorating the tables and chairs. Blooming peonies were radiant in shades of white, blush, fuchsia and deep red. Single flowers were placed inside luxe gold geometric terrariums, alongside gilded pears on the tabletop. Darling signage mirrored the beautiful invitation suite by PaperBuzz with a special touch by All She Wrote Notes. The invitation included a card for guests to write their favorite tried and true recipe or household tip for the soon to be Mrs., and hand painted wooded spoons gave them a chance to offer their very best marriage advice as a precious keepsake. After brunch, the ladies explored the Southern Season store to find all of the perfect gifts that the bride needed to turn her house into a home, as she starts her new life with her husband to be!

Vivacious shades of fuchsia, turquoise, and orange painted the scene for this flirty and fabulous luncheon at the Historic Wagner House. Cathy Anna Weddings and Events sought to design a girly, feminine and modern event that matched the bride’s sweet style and personality. A team of talented vendors came together to take her vision and turn it into a darling reality and help the bride thank her girls for standing by her side. The Wagner House in Downtown Clayton set the stage for a perfectly elegant and sweet Southern event, with its historic charm and warm hospitality. The tone for the luncheon was introduced with a vibrant floral invitation suite created by PaperBuzz. Their team designed the custom suite to match the vivid shades of the event and the bride’s modern aesthetic, including a menu to detail the delicious menu from 214 Martin Catering. The spectacular and vibrant arrangements created by North Raleigh Florist was the anchor for a beautiful tablescape. Rich shades of orange and pink sat atop colored

glass at the table, while a darling “Miss to Mrs” floral sign stood above the mantle, marking the reason for the joyous occasion. The table was dressed in a crisp white linen to draw attention to the modern acrylic chairs provided by American Party Rentals. The bride and her maids wore coordinating dresses from Traditions by Anna bridal boutique in a lush shade of hot pink with the perfect touch of prep. The guests sipped colorful cocktails out on the front porch before lunch was served. 214 Martin Catering designed a custom menu to match the vivid shades of pink and orange used in the décor. A beet confit started the meal, served with asparagus tips, feta and baby greens, with a main course of salmon with carrot risotto and a purple cauliflower puree. The focal point of the entryway was a sweet experience, with an array of colorcoordinated desserts created by Party Delights. A smorgasbord of dipped cookies, popcorn, candy apples and cotton candy surrounded a show stopping cake atop a hot pink stand. The display left everyone’s sweet tooth feeling more than satisfied. Favors included perfectly preppy lipstick holders, nail polish, and personalized monogrammed key chains from Miss Muffett’s Tuffetts. The luncheon was posh and preppy, and the perfect way for the bride to thank her maids!

the budget a closer look at what things really cost Every magazine tells you what you can afford. We tell you what things really cost. Here’s a guide to what some wedding related services cost in and around the Triangle. Keep in mind, we can only provide a range quality and specifics. Final selections determine the final price. accommodations

Reserving a block of rooms at one of the Triangle’s full service hotels should garner one of their better rates. Expect to spend $85 to $215 per night, depending on the hotel you select and the time of year.

ceremony facility rental fees

If you’re not a member of the church hosting your ceremony, site fees typically begin at $250 and can be as high as $1500. For non-church facilities, including gardens, B&Bs, and historic spaces expect to spend $1500-$2000 for ceremony site rental.

ceremony music

Single musicians like harpists, organists and pianists generally cost between $150 and $300 for the preludes and ceremony. A string quartet should range between $575 and $1000 depending on the quality of the musicians. Soloists range from $75 to $300, depending on the number of selections required and the reputation of the singer.

your gown

The prices of wedding gowns vary widely by designer, fabric quality and construction quality. At a national gown warehouse, you can expect to spend $200 to $800. Most local full service bridal salons carry gowns that range from $500 to $2000, with lots of selection at every price point. The local salons that carry couture gowns begin at $1500 and can go above $7000.

218

Weddings Magazine

2015

Remember to count on $200 to $500 for alterations when you budget for your gown. Budget between $200 and $3000 when budgeting for your veil and accessories.

hair and makeup

For bridesmaids, expect to spend between $25 and $40 for simple up-dos completed in a salon and between $12 and $30 for in-salon make up application. Typically, the bride is more expensive, due to the care and time taken with her makeup and hair. In a salon, expect to spend $40-100 for bridal hair and $20-50 for makeup application. On-site application is typically more expensive, but far more convenient and practical for a busy wedding day. Expect to spend $40-95 per maid for makeup and hair, and $200-$400 for the bride. If looking your best is of utmost concern, hire an artist for the entire day, which includes initial application and touch ups throughout the day. Plan to spend $1000 to $2500 for this luxury.

invitations

Prices and quality vary widely depending on the thickness and quality of the paper, the type of lettering

yourbudget reallylongtabtitle

you choose and finish details of the invitation. For 100 invitations, you should expect to spend $100-150 for a set from a mail order company. For 100 thermographed invitations from a mid-range supplier, expect to spend between $200 and $500 for the set. Custom designed, hand embellished and specialty invitations can cost from $300 to $1000 for 100.

wedding consultants

Service fees for wedding consultants vary widely based on the number of hours you need and the reputation of the consultant. Day-of-services range from $500 to $2000 and full-serviceplanning ranges from $1500 to $7000. Be sure to thoroughly compare each consultant’s services. Many offer different combinations of services and hours in packages, but call them by similar names. If you’re interested in a planner but can’t afford a package, ask about hourly consulting or associates.

photography

Photographers prices vary based on the quality of the work, the skill of the artist, the hours of coverage, the amount and type of film shot, the type of processing, the number of finished prints and the type and quality of the album included. Expect to spend $5,000 to

$11,000 on a top photographer, who’s work has been seen in national wedding publications. The second tier of photographers charge $3000 to $6000. There are a number of traditional and a few photojournalists charging $1000 to $3000. Consider having a great photographer for a shorter period of time. How many images of dancing do you need anyway? Opt for a smaller number of finished proofs and a longer coverage day from the best photographer you can afford. A few good images are always better than a lot of photos you don’t like.

videography

Expect to spend between $700 and $5000 depending on the number of cameras covering your event and the amount of editing required on the finished product. Most couples spend between $1000 and $2000 on their wedding video. This includes one or two cameras, some editing, and several finished DVDs.

reception facility rental fees

There may be no facility rental at private clubs, where fees are often waived for members. At hotels and banquet halls, the fee ranges from $1000 to about $2000. Couples with a $20,000 budget spend about $1000 on facili-

ties. Need to save money here? Ask if the facility fee can be waived if you meet a certain minimum. Or consider having your ceremony and reception in the same place – which may reduce the fee.

tents

Tent prices vary widely depending on the size of the tent needed. Expect to spend between $1000 and $4000 on a frame tent, depending on the size area you’ll need tented. Draping the interior of the tent can range dramatically, depending on your use of a stock ($1500 to $2000) or custom ($3000 to $15000) liner. Lighting also varies widely depending on the type of lighting selected, but expect to spend $400 to $2000 to light your tent.

linens and rentals

Expect to spend $7 to $12 per table on basic white or solid color linens. Specialty linens, including prints and silks, can range from $15 to $28 per table. Chairs range from $2.00 for folding plastic chairs and $4.00 for white wood folding chairs to $6 to $8 per chair for chivari ballroom chairs or specialty bar stools. Candles, candelabras, centerpiece vessels, chargers, specialty china and

more can all be rented locally, and are substantially less expensive than purchasing.

flowers

The prices of flowers vary widely based on flower types and the labor required in arrangement styles. In general, you can expect to spend between $75 and $400 on your bouquet. Price depends on the size of the bouquet and the blooms you select. Bridesmaid’s bouquets are usually more modest and range from $75 to $225. Boutonnieres and corsages range from $9 to $30. Arrangements for your ceremony can vary widely, but expect to spend at least $200 on anything of substantial size. Centerpieces for your reception range from $50-$100 per table for something small and simple to $350 per table for a large elaborate arrangement.

bar fees

Most reception facilities and caterers in the Triangle price alcohol based on consumption. This means you’ll pay only for the alcohol that your guests consume. Expect to spend between $14-28 per person if you’re offering a beer and wine bar for four hours. Remember, you’ll have to pay a service fee (generally 18-22%) and sales tax on your bar tab.

the cake

Wedding cakes range from $2.50 per slice to $7.00 per slice. The average Triangle baker charges

220

Weddings Magazine

2015

$4.00-$4.50 per slice. Keep in mind that there are slice minimums as well as delivery fees. ($50-75 is typical for a local delivery).

the food

This is your largest expenditure and the toughest to estimate. Hors d’oeuvres parties start at about $19 per person and can go as high as $72 per person. (We’ve even seen some $200 per person parties!) Price depends on the selections that you make with your caterer. Keep in mind that there is an additional fee for carvers, servers, and bartenders. This cost is either figured in a staff-cost expenditure, or it’s included in the 20% service fee. Though most couples don’t expect it, seated meals can sometimes be the most affordable option. Portion sizes are very controlled, so caterers know exactly how much of each ingredient to order. Seated dinner prices range from $18 to $85 per person, with averages in most clubs and hotels around $35 per person. Buffet dinners are often the most expensive option. Caterers must prepare more of each item to ensure that they don’t run out of food and that means waste. Buffets generally start at $26 per person and go up to $60 per person, with averages around $38 per person. You’ll want to remember that you’ll have an additional 20% gratuity and 7% sales tax added to the final bill.

transportation

Traditional limousines are widely available in a variety of colors and sizes.

Expect to spend between $100 to $155 per hour for a traditional limousine with a three-hour minimum on most weekends. There’s also a 15-20% gratuity added to the overall bill. Larger scale limos, limo SUVs and specialty cars are typically more expensive.

reception music

If you’re thinking of a DJ, budget between $800 and $1200 for a fourhour reception. The cost of bands vary widely. For a local party band with four to five members, plan on $2000 to $4000. If you plan to hire a band with more regional appeal or more members, you’ll need to increase your budget by as much as $4000.

wedding favors

Favor costs vary depending on the item selected. Most couples spend between $2 and $5 per person on favors and packaging. Options like birdseed and bubbles are the least expensive, and items like custom poured chocolates, mini cakes and sterling silver gifts are most expensive, sometimes reaching $10-$15 per person. wm

amazing lashes

Are you always on the hunt for a new mascara that will make your eyelashes look naturally full and gorgeous? Odds are that even with the most expensive mascara, the results still fall short of your dream lashes.

Fortunately, there is a way to get the full, healthy lashes that you want without having to apply clumpy mascara every day. Amazing Lashes are extensions that are individually applied to your natural lash line to create a semi-permanent solution for thin lashes. These are the lashes you have always dreamed of, and what better day to sport amazing lashes than on your wedding day? We talked to Scott Molnar, Regional director at Amazing Lash Studio to get the skinny on these fat lashes.

before

After the first two days, avoid anything that will damage the lashes, such as waterproof mascara, mechanical lash curlers, unnecessary rubbing of the eyes, and excessive exposure to moisture.

styles available Amazing Lashes

come in several styles to match your perfect wedding look. The “Natural” style frames the natural line of your eye to enhance your existing lashes. The “Cute” style adds more lashes at the top center of the lash line to open the eye and make it appear larger – ideal for those with deep-set eyes. The “Sexy” style elongates the sides of the eyes for dramatic flair, and the “Gorgeous” style creates a heavy, full mascara look. Think the dramatic look of Kim Kardashian and her famous sisters. Three different thicknesses and various lengths are available to customize each look.

need to return to the salon after a few weeks to have the lashes assessed and refilled as necessary. The aesthetician will gain a better understanding of your lash pattern at this visit, and can replace lashes that have fallen out or add lashes to hairs that have grown in. Then, an appointment is necessary every three to four weeks for refills to keep a thick, healthy lash line.

Molnar says that many women get the lashes specifically for photos, such as brides on their wedding day and professionals having headshots taken. However, these lashes are beautiful for every day as well! wm

cool sculpting

your best you for your big day The day you say “I Do” will go down in your personal history, with close-ups and fulllength photos that will forever be viewed by family and friends for generations. Feeling your absolute best on this once in a lifetime day is essential, and looking exactly how you want to look is no longer an impossible dream! For many, looking their best means losing a few pounds. Diet and exercise months before the big day are one way to possibly achieve your goal, but not guaranteed. For many, gaining a few pounds before you say “I do” is actually more common than losing that unwanted weight. Few of us have the budget for surgery, nor do we have the luxury of time for the recovery that liposuction or other weight-reduction surgeries require. Cool Sculpting, also known as medicalese and cryolipolysis, offers a fast alternative that requires very little down time. “Cool Sculpting uses a targeted cooling process to literally freeze and destroy fat cells,” explains Dr. Jeremy Pyle of Davis & Pyle Plastic Surgery. “Since only fat cells below the skin are affected, the surrounding tissues are not impacted in any way, leading to a faster recovery time for patients. After the fat cells have been crystallized, the body’s own elimination system removes the targeted fat deposits naturally.” Cool Sculpting can be used to target any area of excess or stubborn fat, such as the common trouble areas around the midsection, thighs and back. The 232

targeted area is positioned between two panels on the treatment device, and treatment takes up to an hour. Patients can relax, read, listen to music or catch up on emails during the procedure.

during the procedure, but the feeling quickly passes. Others experience redness, numbness, or minor bruising or discomfort depending on the area personal response to the treatment.

“Because there is no surgery and no incision to worry about, there’s also no down time,” Dr. Pyle says. “Our patients can immediately resume their routines after their treatment session.”

Unlike other non-invasive body treatments, Cool Sculpting offers permanent results. “Fat cells, once eliminated by the body, are gone permanently,” Pyle explains. “You will be able to enjoy your new figure indefinitely, as long as you maintain your weight.”

Pyle says that patients can see as much as a 25 percent reduction in the treated area after just one session. More sessions may be necessary for those with more fat to remove. “Cool Sculpting reveals slimmer body contours gradually over time, so you won’t have that ‘Aha!’ moment immediately after your treatment,” Pyle reveals. “Many patients notice a difference within a few weeks, with peak results after two or three months. In weeks to come, you will be able to look in the mirror with confidence. When you slip on that wedding dress you will quickly notice your new and improved silhouette. The procedure is relatively pain-free. Some patients say that they feel cold

New applicators include the Cool Mini for the knees, underarm areas, and the area under the chin, as well as the Cool Smooth for the outer thighs. The other applicators at the practice include the Cool Fit for the inner thighs, arms and abdomen; the Cool Core for the abdomen, bra and back area, and backs of the thighs; the Cool Curve for the love handles and back; and the Cool Max for the abdomen. “We have two of every applicator and four machines to get treatments done as efficiently as possible,” Pyle shares. “We can treat chin to knee and everywhere in between.” wm

trends in tenting

Weddings tents are more than just a weatherproof option for ceremonies and receptions – these dynamic coverings are a versatile and functional option for outdoor events, and can be customized and tailored to match your style and theme. The adaptability of these mobile structures allows your venue to be as unique as you are, whether you choose a sentimental family farm or urban outdoor courtyard.

Trends in tenting begin with the tent themselves. No longer is white plastic the only choice – natural sailcloth tenting can be rustic or preppy while a clear tent protects from the elements without obstructing views. Choose a colored tent to match a specific theme, such as vibrant red or a light powder blue.

lighting Unique lighting is the

most dynamic and dramatic way to make a big impact on your tented reception. Take advantage of the existing structure to hang lighting that will match your wedding style, whether it is whimsical or regal. Wellplaced chandeliers bring elegance to an outdoor reception, while clusters of Chinese lanterns are playful and fun. Sweeping market lights are another option that is ambient and on-trend. Consider colored lighting to change your white draping into the shade of

your choice, basking the entire space in an ambient glow. The options for lighting are limitless, so speak to your rental company about the options that are available to illuminate your space. draping Add dimension to your tented space with canopy fabric draped at different heights. Partially drape a clear tent for a light and airy look, or cover the whole ceiling to create a more intimate experience. Drape the ceiling in woven rattan for a beachside fete, or use plush textiles to add a luxe appeal.

of mind when it comes to your wedding day, so tenting is the perfect compromise. Many venues have a preferred list of rental companies, so speak to them about discounted rates for using their vendor list. Many companies also allow you to place a “hold” on a tent, paying a small deposit and percentage of the rental fee - rain or shine. If Mother Nature decides not to play nice, you simply need to give them 24 to 48 hours notice to put your rain plan into action. This is the perfect option for couples who with their heart set on an outdoor wedding, but don’t want to take the gamble of not having a Plan B. Whether you choose to turn your tented reception into an extravagant affair, or simply want to embrace the great outdoors with a see-through tent, there are many options to make your tented wedding uniquely you. wm

wine time:

wine pairing for each course

Wine is one of the most common alcoholic beverages served weddings. Instead of just adding it to the open bar, consider creating a wine pairing for each course of your dinner, from the appetizers to the dessert. Appetizers The rule of thumb in serving wines is to serve from light to heavy, and from whites to reds. For the appetizer course, pass a light white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc. This citric wine pairs well with salads and light fish, so consider choosing tuna or crab for your appetizers. Fish or Chicken Course A chardonnay is a slightly heavier white than the Sauvignon Blanc, and recommended for white meat dishes, such as chicken and fish. Duck or Game You’ll need a full-flavored red wine for duck or game bird courses. These dishes have a distinctive flavor, and the best match for them is a hearty pinot noir. 252

Weddings Magazine

2016

Steak or Beef For a good steak, a high-tannin wine is the best choice. A cabernet sauvignon is the perfect option. Or you can pair a merlot with other beef dishes, like a roast. Dessert Most people will serve champagne when the wedding cake is cut. However, there are many options for wine pairings when it comes to the dessert course. Whether you serve cake or another dessert at the end of the meal, you’ll need to choose a sweet wine such as a late-harvest, or ice-wine. The grapes for these wines are harvested while they are frozen, giving them a concentrated, sweet flavor. Your wedding is a wonderful occasion to serve a formal meal and celebrate in style. Take advantage of this opportunity and choose a sophisticated wine pairing with your meal. Work with the caterer to choose the exact brands to match the best pairing for each course. wm

Betsy&Charlie Betsy and Charlie’s Eco-Chic Wedding weekend kicked off in true Outer Banks style with a beachside barbeque welcome reception. The couple wanted a fun, casual gathering to set the wedding weekend in motion and to set the mood for the rest of the celebration. The Minnesotan couple chose the Outer Banks as their destination-wedding locale because of the bride’s ties to the area. Her family has been vacationing there since she was a child, and Betsy and Charlie recently purchased a timeshare in Duck, NC. The Sanderling was an easy choice with its wonderful amenities, talented staff and all-inclusive appeal, not to mention the multiple breathtaking venues. Their wedding perfectly represented the couple as a juxtaposition of traditional and eclectic styles. The bride describes their personal style as effortlessly chic, “We have a modern style with a flair for the elements – wood, water, greens and stone – in our home and our life. We strive for a casual elegance where people feel comfortable, but feel special.” Traditional church pews mixed with natural wood Chiavaris, the washed wood trellis framing their nuptials was softened by lemon leaf greenery, and the modern aesthetic of their tables was contrasted by the soft glow of natural vine bramble orbs in the ceiling. A light shower after their vows created an impeccably timed rainbow across the horizon, as if the Atlantic herself was sending well wishes for their marriage. rachel&bret {a bridal by the sea real wedding}

After almost 20 years of professional wedding planning, it was time for Rachel, owner of Bridal by the Sea, to hand the reigns over to someone that she could trust to let her be a bride! Who better than her business partner, Jaci to plan and execute Rachel’s dream wedding day. Happy couple Bret and Rachel had a little over a year to plan their intimate April wedding. Nuances of the couple’s personality and passion were evident throughout the ceremony and reception: One of the bride’s gifts to her groom was a hand painted pair of Vans that had the Seattle Seahawks team logo painted on them with the Seattle skyline displayed on the back heel. Bret gifted Rachel a sixpence from one of his many travel adventures. The couple exchanged non-traditional vows with their children by their sides as attendance. The menu was an amalgam of global cuisines from the couples favorite travel destinations, including grilled cheese and tomato bisque, as well as a steak with a rum-infused jerk rub from Jamaica. Their wedding cake was embellished with pages from The Velveteen Rabbit, which speaks to the love that the couple shares, as the book tells the story of “real” love that takes a lifetime to find. Once you do, you hold fast to it because it makes you who you are… Real. Bret also gave Rachel a first edition copy of The Velveteen Rabbit from the year that she was born. 258

Each guest was asked to sign the globe on his or her favorite place to travel. The first call that Rachel made when selecting her vendors was Justin Castellano. As a professional wedding planner, she knew the importance of music and entertainment, and she also knew that Justin was the perfect person to perform at their wedding. “He is hands down the best live guitarist that I have heard...what a jewel to have Justin here in North Carolina and a privilege to have had him play at our wedding.

thehoneymoon

honeymoon your way With modern technology and discount travel websites, hiring a travel agent can seem archaic and unnecessary. However, there are actually many misconceptions and hidden benefits to hiring a professional agent for your honeymoon! “The number one myth about travel agents is that they charge you a fee in addition to the cost of your honeymoon,” says Lynn Thomas of Alpha World Travel. “In reality most agents offer their services to you at no cost, and then we are compensated by the hotel.” This means that hotels and resorts around the world invite agents to experience their locations and amenities, giving them the most accurate professional insight into the amenities, food, and quality of just about every possible destination you could want to visit. “This knowledge allows them to take your idea of a dream honeymoon, whether it includes a casino, swimming with pigs or white sand beaches, and offer you a list of potential options in a matter of minutes,” Lynn adds. They can show you pictures from their own trips to the resorts. Another misconception is that online travel sites offer you the best value for your honeymoon. “While I don’t set the prices, I can tell you when you are getting the best deal,” explains Lynn, who has more than 20 years of experience in the industry. The low prices on travel sites may not include taxes and transfer fees, offer flights that cut significantly into your vacation

time, or only offer rooms in an undesirable part of the hotel – facing the parking lot for example! “Also,” adds Lynn, “the terms and conditions on many discount travel websites read that you are not guaranteed the type of room you paid for, or even a room in the same hotel.” This means that if a higher paying guest comes along, you could be booted to a hotel down the street, which doesn’t sound like the best start to a happy honeymoon. Using a travel agent not only saves you the hassle of hunting for the best deal, it also protects you from hidden travel costs and some sneaky fine print Hiring a travel agent can also help with your financial planning. Instead of having to pay in full as you would with a website, you only have to pay a small deposit and airfare, and then the balance is not due until 45 days before your trip. If you book your trip the recommended nine months before your wedding, this gives you lots of time to save up. Also, travel agents like Lynn offer price protection until your balance is due, which means your price will go down if you or her find a better deal before your trip. The best thing that travel agents can offer you is peace of mind. While

you can plan and plan before your trip, unforeseen circumstances such as a missed connection can leave you stranded overnight, making several phone calls to fix the situation and missing a big chunk of your honeymoon. “Alternatively, you can make one call to your agent who will contact the airline, put you on the next available flight, have your return flight reservation moved, and get your hotel stay push back a day so you are able enjoy every minute of paradise that you paid for,” says Lynn. They can also use their own experience to make sure you aren’t taken advantage of by pushy cab drivers and other tourist traps, provide helpful lists of everything you need for your trip, and information about the best excursions to visit outside of your resort. A honeymoon is a once in a lifetime vacation to celebrate your marriage, and should be as easy and low-stress as possible. With the many benefits to using an agent, clicking through pages and pages of travel sites seems like an unnecessary hassle. After all, you hire a professional for every other aspect of your wedding, from the cake to the DJ, so why should your honeymoon be any different? wm

WRAL Freedom ballon festival at bennett bunn plantation all photos www.shanesnider.com

In the spring of 2015, the Triangle welcomed a one of a kind aerial event: The inaugural WRAL Freedom Balloon Festival. Hosted at Bennett Bunn Plantation, a beautiful historic wedding venue and estate in Zebulon, this exciting festival celebrated all things aviary with tethered hot air balloon rides, competition flights, a balloon glow and mass ascension after dark. This unique celebration created the opportunities for some incredible engagement pictures for one Raleigh couple. Shane Snider Photography captured these incredible shots of David Padilla and Angie Cole just a few months before their upcoming wedding. The towering and colorful balloons created an incredible background and fun-filled environment for their engagement pictures! Dave and Angie were married on July 17, 2015 in a stunning ceremony and reception at The Stockroom in Downtown Raleigh.
