Weddings Magazine
2017
What a year! As life-changing events take place during this rare time in history, the wedding industry has produced some of the most stellar trends that we have ever witnessed. Timeless classics have been re-invented and modern twists have been added to traditional elements, delighting brides with a bevy of different styles – this unpredictability is why we adore every aspect of the wedding world! There is no doubt that North Carolina holds some of the most extraordinary venues anywhere and we could not be more ecstatic with this year’s shoots – dare we say, they are the BEST ever! This year we had the privilege of shooting flowers at the newly renovated Marriott Raleigh Crabtree, fashion at the pastoral Starlight Meadow, cakes at the classic Carolina Inn, and hair and makeup at the modern 1705 Prime. Following these we also styled some gorgeous events in four unique locations in NC. The NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, The Bradford in Pittsboro, Bull City Cigar in Durham and the beautiful Rose Hill in Rocky Mount. It has been an amazing year and 2017 promises to be an even more exciting one! As wedding trends continue to thrill, we are always awe-struck at the creativity of our talented photographers. These professionals are the top in their field and travel all over the world to capture the perfect shots – what a privilege to have their photos featured in our publication. Receptions are taking a new turn in the direction of entertainment and enchantment as bewildered guests look forward to fabulous fun with the unique likes of hand rolled cigar stations, décor that dazzles and fabulous sunrise roof top after-parties. Cakes are almost as beautiful as they are delicious these days! The artistry of the sugar flowers and décor are so realistic that it becomes virtually impossible to tell the difference between the edible and authentic. This year’s tablescapes are some of the most stunning works of art that we have ever seen as rich, lush greenery takes center stage and classic settings make a comeback with an updated twist of elegance. Weddings Magazine is honored to work with exceptionally talent professionals – it really does take a village to bring our pages to life. Thank you for making our publication a part of your special day. Here’s to a lifetime of happiness and the memories and moments on your wedding journey that you will treasure forever!

PLANNING A PERIOD WEDDING Having a time period themed wedding can make you feel like a princess in Medieval Times or a sophisticated lady during Victorian England. The right time period can add romance and elegance to your big day, making it seem even more special. VICTORIAN AFFAIR If you are thinking of a Victorian
wedding, you’ll want to look for gowns that have lots of white lace. Look for a historically appropriate venue like a historic property or a bed and breakfast. Then choose floral centerpieces and designs that include English roses, peonies, and hydrangeas. Other décor can include lace tablecloths, handkerchiefs, embroidered linens, and fine china. RENAISSANCE NUPTIALS The Renaissance Era is one
of the most popular. If you want to bring that same flair to your wedding, look for a gown with sleeves that flare out
dramatically from the elbow and a full skirt that flares from the waist. Some gowns also have a corseted bodice, while others just have the look of one. THE SUMMER OF LOVE The Summer of Love is in our
not-too-distant past. Your own mother or grandmother may have been married then. Your wedding gown can take its cues from any bohemian style – think simple gowns with lots of lace and chiffon. Wear your hair loose with a crown of flowers. Use handmade quilts, sheets and other bed linens to cover the tables or create seating areas. The key to planning a successful time period wedding is to do your research and to work with vendors who can provide the right services and the right look, from the clothes you and your bridal party wear to the decorations for the event to the food you serve. wm 2017

NAVIGATING THE BRIDAL SHOW Going to a bridal show can make you feel a bit like a kid in a candy shop. You are dazzled by all the displays and want to rush ahead to sample all the cakes, look at all the beautiful portfolios, and run your hands over all the linens, but you just don’t know where to start. CHOOSE WISELY Check out the season’s schedule and
pick two to three shows that will feature the vendors that seem most interesting or that will have the most variety. Then check off a few vendors that you must see while at the show and leave the rest of the time for open exploring. LIMIT YOUR CREW Taking too many people will only make the event more chaotic and stressful. You’ll be juggling everyone’s opinion about where you should go and what you should do, which will confuse your plan and 44

create too much potential for conflict. Go alone if you can, or take one trusted friend if you must have company. TIME IT RIGHT Plan to show up to the event a little after it has started so you can avoid the rush, but get there early enough that the vendors are still fresh and excited to talk. Try to plan your route around the room with special events like fashion shows or demonstrations in mind, as well. PREPARE! Make a list of things you really want to check out – these will be your “must do’s”. When you complete that checklist, then it will be time to peruse the tables and chit-chat. Wear comfortable clothing at the shows and arm yourself with a bottle of water, your phone for photos, and a notebook. You’ll get plenty of information and have a great time, and you’ll leave feeling more prepared to plan your wedding. wm

TRANSFORMING YOUR CHURCH It’s traditional to get married in a church – and even more special for some people to get married in the same church as their parents or the church they worshiped in growing up. But many churches have the same interior décor, and you may want to do something to blend the traditional and modern, keeping the church that has sentimental value but dressing it up to better reflect your personal style. add plenty of lighting Imagine how breathtaking your church will look just absolutely covered in candles. Place hundreds of candles around the church – on shelves, on candelabras, on chandeliers, and on the altar. You will create a breathtaking look that will create a romantic ambiance.
Portable chandeliers are another stunning way to update the look of the church you are getting married in – these are available for rental or purchase. Hung lights are a fantastic option to add just the right amount of ambiance you need to brighten things up a bit – from foliage to background highlights, these can provide just the right amount of sparkle.
of color. Adding drapery in the right spots can also make a large church seem more intimate and cozy. personalized aisle runner The
aisle runner is the most common piece of décor for a church wedding. You can put in a personalized aisle runner that better reflects the theme of your wedding and your personal style. If you are having a rustic wedding, you can create an aisle runner out of burlap or even wood. If you are having a more sophisticated upscale wedding, you can create an aisle runner out of glittery fabric or satiny fabric. The options are unlimited. add greenery You’ve already seen
use drapery Large bolts of fabric covering every inch of the walls and ceiling can make a dramatic look for your wedding ceremony or reception. You probably don’t want to cover up too much of the church décor – you do want to show off some of the church. Maybe you can drape key areas of the church, such as the side aisles or the areas flanking the altar. Depending on the layout and color scheme of the church, this can add just the right pop

how flowers can really transform a space. The right greenery can also make a place seem totally different, giving it a more earthy and romantic vibe. You don’t have to bring real plants inside – silk and other fake plants will do just as well. Consider small trees, garlands, shrubs, and other greenery throughout the church to accent your other décor and add a special earthy touch.
bring in props Oversized vases,
paintings, sculpture and other props can create the décor you want. Place them strategically around the church to either cover up items that you don’t want in your ceremony or to add interesting visual appeal to the areas where there are no items now. Make sure you talk to the church about how to deal with items that need to be hung or attached to surfaces since there might be rules about making holes from nails or screws. hire a musician A harpist or violinist won’t just create sweet sounds for your ceremony – they will also create a point of visual interest. The instrument itself is considered a work of art, and watching the musician at work is like watching living sculpture for some. Consider hiring a musician to play instead of sticking to just the organ music or a recording.
With a little creativity and some planning, you can make any church look like the wedding of your dreams. You can enjoy the small-town church where you grew up while also enjoying the glamorous wedding that you envision. wm

TRENDS FOR DIAMOND SHAPES FOR LADIES AND GENTS Wedding bands change with the trends, just like wedding gowns and tuxedos. Some styles, like the simple gold band, will stick around forever, but some are especially popular for a few years and then fade into the background. You may think you know exactly what you want, but staying updated on the hottest looks in wedding rings might just have you thinking twice! mixed metals One of the hottest
trends in wedding bands right now according to Megan Farrell of Diamonds Direct is to mix metals. The common layout is a platinum band with a gold line running through the center, but other design options are available. You can get bands that mix multiple metals together – not just two – or you can choose bands in different metals for the bride and the groom. Women can have an engagement ring in one metal and a wedding band in another. dark bands Gunmetal bands are
by stacking a few rings together or by choosing one ring that mimics this look. These bands can have engraved designs on them, or they can be more simple bands that have elaborate settings. The effect is achieved by combining the different styles together. You can also custom design a ring with these mixed styles. Take your inspiration from rings you’ve admired throughout the years or come up with your own design. cushion cut diamonds For
engagement rings or wedding bands with diamonds, the cushion cut diamond is tremendously popular. This cut has a square shape with rounded edges. One reason it is so popular is that it tends to look great on both long and short fingers. Another reason for its popularity is that a high number of celebrities prefer this style. The cut is easier to achieve, so the diamond is not as expensive.
very popular, as are polished wood rings in dark tones like mahogany and chestnut. Megan explains that tungsten, cobalt, titanium and carbon fiber inlays are all popular choices for men’s wedding bands that provide a darker color. These rings have an edgier look that many men are more comfortable with, particularly if they are not used to wearing jewelry.

choices. For those with a more niche aesthetic, the marquis cut is preferable for those who like a vintage look and the Emerald cut is a good choice for those who like the art deco style. Wedding rings have stayed within a range of traditional styles for a long time, but the modern push toward self-expression has contributed to the rise of some unique styles. These are just a few of the trends that are popular now, but there are sure to be interesting new designs featured in the coming years. What is most important is to find a ring that suits your personality and your style. Your ring will become an extension of your unique love story. wm

The saying applies most often to fashion - trends come and they go, many of them resurfacing decades later as something “new” or “current” (much to our mothers’ amazement!) The complicated nature of trends means we often see bridal looks with a hint of something familiar, with a modern twist. It’s hard not to see why some of these tried and true looks wouldn’t make a comeback. Some of our favorite looks from 2017’s bridal runways each possessed a hint of familiarity, whether in silhouette, embellishment or accessory. We’ve detailed a few of our most favorite trends below, decade by decade. But before you go running to try on your mom’s 1980’s wedding gown, here’s the secret to mastering the act of pulling off one of these throwback trends: Couture, not costume! Well, how far back can we go? It depends on where you start. Every decade of the 20th century borrows from those that came before them, but we’re taking it back to the midcentury to show you how recent some of these trends were in their heyday!

Who can forget the 60’s and all it gave us? This decade saw the rise of free love, flower power, and all things groovy. No style defines recent trends more than the flower crown (Snapchat, anyone?!) Whether adorning the heads of little flower girls, the blushing bride, or the entire wedding party, flower crowns made an appearance on runways and aisles throughout 2016 and will continue to through 2017. This look is romantic and sensuous at the same time, with an avant-garde aesthetic that can’t be matched.

Sticking with the 60’s style, our next favorite trend is flower power embodied. Look for lots of 3-dimensional floral elements on gowns next season. This trend is fun and flirty with just the right amount of ethereal elegance, with an unexpected twist. Large or small, 3-D blooms are a fun and modern twist on any bridal look. Truth be told, all of 2017 is giving us a “music festival” vibe that makes us nostalgic for Woodstock. Swing into the 70’s, and you’ll find even more 2017 bridal trends to fall in love with. For those seeking a departure from the demure wedding style, you need only look to the plunging neckline. Made famous by the disco divas of Studio 54, this trend is fashion forward and figure flattering, thanks to its elongating lines. Pro-tip: Don’t forget the fashion tape!

Speaking of long lines, one unexpected trend that we’re obsessing over for 2017 is the bridal jumpsuit. Pants are always a welcome respite from the traditional bridal gown, but a one-piece just makes it look that much more put-together. Missing that big wedding presence of a gown? Don’t fret, a train looks just as stunning when paired with pants. Ready to move on into the 80’s? Who knew that the decade that brought us some of our least favorite fashion trends (shoulder pads, giant hair, and way too much blush) would make us so nostalgic for a little glam? While the 80’s didn’t invent these wedding trends, they did embrace them with full force. You can thank “the Decade that Made Us” for more than one trend that rocked the bridal runways this year, starting with big embellishments.

While just about everything from the 1980’s was larger than life, bows can take the cake. 2017’s bridal runways saw an abundance of large bows, whether gracing a shoulder or making a grand exit as a bustle. Nothing could be more timeless, and mom’s around the world are rejoicing! Madonna get’s credit for the next one: Underwear as outerwear. Yes, it sounds crazy! But bridal designers played up corsetry this season by accenting the bustier top with lace, embroidery, elaborate beading and creative illusion paneling. While we don’t recommend going full “Like a Virgin,” a sturdy bra cup, some boning and a little sheer make for an unforgettable wedding day look.

The last trend that we can thank the 80’s for is one that we never saw coming: Shoulders. We aren’t talking about the “Leg O’ Mutton” sleeve that can be found in all of our parents’ wedding albums, but unique shoulder trends sure took the cake on Spring 2017’s runways. Whether it’s a structured shoulder a la Alexander McQueen or a dramatic off the shoulder silhouette, there’s no need to look any further for a romantic way to add a little style to your wedding day look.

Talking about the 90’s in the past tense is a tough pill to swallow for a lot of us at Weddings Mag. After all, it only seems like yesterday that we were rocking out to the Spice Girls in the back seat of our mom’s mini-van. But, as recent as it was, we’re seeing a plethora of 90’s styles making a comeback, on and off the runways. One of our favorites is the crop top. Separates are always a good idea, but the possibilities are endless when it comes to mixing and matching. Pair that with a touch of skin in a super non-sexy place, and you’ve got the recipe for an on-trend bridal look that is sure to stop everyone in their tracks. Next, we look to the simple column dress. This silhouette was actually incredibly popular for bridal looks in the 90’s - most often with a bateau or cowl neckline and an awkward toe-grazing length. Now, sheath gowns represent pure elegance and sensuality. These figure-hugging gowns are so light, airy and ethereal, you’re sure to feel like you’re walking on air. Nix the harshness of an overdone undo, and pair the look with a romantic wave for an angelic and obsession-worthy wedding day style.

expensive alterations by simply giving yourself a lift and raising your hemline. Stilettos give you a few extra inches to save you the adjustments and to give you a more regal stature. The strappy stilettos have a sexy and sophisticated look for the modern bride. BALLET FLATS You might love the look of stilettos, but you might hate the pain they inflict on your feet – especially after you’ve been mingling and dancing for four hours. Ballet flats are a popular footwear choice that are also pretty and romantic. Choose a pair of satin slippers with a small rhinestone brooch or another bit of sparkle to fit your style. You can even try out a pair of lacy Toms that you could just as easily wear with your everyday clothes. SPARKLY SHOES You already feel like a princess on your wedding day, so why not look like one, too? Get a pair of shoes that is completely decked out in sequins, rhinestones, and other sparkly gems. Choose something that is bedazzled along just one part – like the border around the sole or something that’s completely covered. FUNKY FOOTWEAR Many brides are choosing to wear funky shoes in unexpected colors and styles under their gowns. Brides are wearing everything from purple Converse to red cowboy boots under their dresses. It gives them a chance to show off their real style under all that wedding finery – and it makes for some great pictures. Try out some of these trendy footwear choices with your gown and see firsthand what makes you feel like your best self. You deserve to feel gorgeous and comfortable on your wedding day! wm

Engage Ida Lou as your mobile dressing suite! Our perfectly appointed vintage Airstream provides a glamorous and private location for hair, makeup, and dress prep.
PREP FOR YOUR WEDDING IN STYLE AND ON-THE-GO If you get married at a church, you’ll have plenty of spaces to prepare. However, many couples are choosing nontraditional venues for their wedding ceremonies, such as gardens, farms, lakes, and beaches. While these may offer a unique backdrop for your nuptials, they also don’t typically come with a big room for you and your party to get ready. Ida Lou Weddings provides a relaxing space for brides to get ready at any venue with their unique, vintage Airstream that has been fully outfitted with everything they need – gown racks, velvet seating, a full-length mirror, surfaces for accessories, and more. “Ida Lou marries the concept of providing specialized services in a ‘go anywhere’ place,” says owner Ashley L. Morra. “The mobile dressing room allows the bride to prepare for her wedding with an experienced bridal
consultant and a private, accessorized dressing room.” Morra explains that the concept for her business arose out of her experience as a bridal consultant and her love for helping brides find the perfect dress. Over time, she had brides say they wish she could also help them prep for the wedding since she helped them select her dress. And so her business was born. Morra combines her love of fashion with skills such as being able to take accurate measurements, properly press and prepare a gown and interacting with family and friends to manage potentially stressful dynamics to help make the preparation process easier for brides. The bridal party is greeted with a champagne toast, and stylists press and prepare the gowns while the bridal party gets ready and snacks on a pre-selected menu. wm 2017

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR WEDDING GOWN AFTER THE WEDDING You spend months picking out your wedding dress, making sure it’s the perfect choice for your big day and for being immortalized in the photos you will have for decades to come. You get to wear it for a few hours – and then what? You put it in your closet to collect dust. Or maybe you put it in one of those boxes that keeps the dust off the dress, but it otherwise wastes away unused. MAKE IT SOMETHING SPECIAL There are yards and
yards of fabric on your wedding dress that you can use to make a number of items that can be both practical and sentimental. For example, you can make a christening gown for your child or you can make a handkerchief or garter belt for a niece or someone else in your family to wear in their wedding. You can make pillows, quilt squares, and even jewelry. You could even make custom lingerie to wear for your anniversary. 76

SAVE IT FOR YOUR DAUGHTER The traditional
option for your wedding dress is to save it in case your daughter wants to wear it for her own wedding. Of course, you are taking a big gamble with this option. Will you actually have a daughter? Will she get married? Will she be the same size you were on your wedding day? Will she actually like the style and want to wear it? For many women, the gamble is well worth it if their daughters do end up wearing the dress. It will be a special moment that they can share. DONATE IT Plenty of organizations accept used wedding
gowns to raise money for worthwhile causes. Some collect dresses to donate to women who cannot afford to buy their own gowns. Research the organizations in your area and decide which you would like to support. If you can’t find any local organization that you like, you can find a place to accept your dress by mail. wm

Erin and Paul met the way a lot of modern couples meet: through online dating. What was so unusual about their connection is that Erin created a list of 37 qualities that she wanted to find in a partner, and Paul had all but one – though he still has time to become a Duke fan. They spent their first year together traveling to places up and down the east coast and even overseas to London, as well as attending numerous concerts and culinary adventures together. Erin proposed to Paul with a scavenger hunt that ended at Mateo, the restaurant where they had their second date. She presented him with a beautiful engagement watch. The couple worked closely with C and D Events to fulfill their vision for their night. Despite many challenges in the days leading to the wedding, the ladies at C and D Events remained calm and organized, and they made the day look effortlessly beautiful. They were married at Duke Gardens a year to the day after the couple went there together for the first time. Erin&Paul of the Spanish language. Everything from the menu and escort cards to the black lace fans carried by the bridesmaids and the lace wedding gown worn by the bride carried on their Spanish theme. The ceremony also included several traditional Spanish customs, such as the laying on of a flower “lazo” to symbolize commitment and the exchanging of arras (coins) to symbolize an agreement to take care of one another financially. Guests enjoyed live Flamenco music at the reception and were entertained by a pair of Flamenco dancers. The menu included dishes like tantalizing gazpacho, garlic shrimp, meatballs, paella and sangria. The wedding cake had a layer inspired by Erin’s dress and another layer inspired by the laser cut invitations. Colors were romantic and vibrant - Sangria pink, eggplant, lavender, Magnolia leaf green, and black. Gorgeous overhead twinkle lights and market light strands provided the perfect “Starry Night” atmosphere under the amazing clear tent as the newlyweds and guests enjoyed an evening they will never forget.

Cora&Torin Classic Southern charm set the tone for the wedding of Cora Lee and Torin Jones. They were married at The Youngsville Baptist Church in North Carolina, which is where the bride’s parents and her grandparents both were married many years ago. The family pastor officiated over the ceremony. The bride and groom thought it was the perfect way to say their vows before family and friends, and start their new lives together as husband and wife. The bride wore a breath-taking Amsale gown, and her bridesmaids wore mauve convertible LuLu dresses. The groom and his groomsmen wore tuxedos with classic white dinner jackets and the entire party was a picture of Southern elegance. The “unplugged ceremony” featured Themeworks mirrors instead of a paper program and Integrity Strings played the music for the ceremony. The reception was held at The Sutherland, with an ambience that was casual yet elegant. A farmhouse sweetheart table used the brides bouquet as the arrangement and their chair’s were draped with garland and glittering “bride” and “groom” tags for the new couple. The guest tables were decorated with a mix of arrangements made by Tre Bella Floral, lanterns with candlelight, and black and white graphic plates with gold trim. The overall décor was a mix of traditional Southern allure with a modern twist. Guests were asked to sign a vintage globe instead of a guest book, a token that will fit right in at their 100 year old house outside of D.C. proper. 82

The band played hits from every era, but had a distinctively Motown vibe, which the bride’s mother described as “totally their style,” referring to the couple. At the end of the night, Cora and Torin made their exit through a line of sparklers held up by guests.

Meggie Wehner and Kyle Richard met the way a lot of couples do, as students in college. They were both studying at the University of Notre Dame, and crossed paths while they were at a house party. After some flirtatious chatting, Megan and Kyle went on a date and soon started meeting regularly. During their senior year, Kyle won a trip to Cabo San Lucas and took Meggie with him. While sitting on a cliff one evening and watching the sun set over the horizon, Kyle surprised Meggie by popping the question.
Meggie&Kyle her signature drink, inspired by the city of Louisville, Kentucky, which is where Kyle grew up and where Kyle’s mother hosted Meggie’s bridal shower. The tables at the reception were decorated with an assortment of glass cylinders with floating candles, rectangular glass vases and cubes of varying sizes. Hydrangeas, peonies, roses, orchids and succulents spilled out of the centerpieces.
In June, they were married in Wilmington, North Carolina where Meggie grew up. Kyle and Meggie exchanged vows at the St. Therese Catholic Church in Wrightsville Beach, which is the church that Meggie attended with her family while growing up. Meggie walked down the aisle wearing a striking Martina Liana dress made of lace, and her bridesmaids wore sea spray-colored gowns. The bride carried a rounded bouquet that included beautiful blooms in shades of white, ivory, blush pink, light peach and dusty grey.
Imported cheeses, a charcuterie station and passed hors d’oeuvres including the bride’s favorite: bacon wrapped ocean scallops. The wedding cake was the focal point of the reception décor, and it was a four-tiered white buttercream creation with fresh flowers cascading down the sides. Each layer featured a champagne gold band and pearl border, as well as gold raindrop lines of different lengths. Gold fondant layers with gold flaking around the edge were featured on the base layer.
The reception was held at the Country Club of Landfall, and it began with a cocktail hour with an open bar and two signature cocktails. Meggie chose the Oaks Lily as

Sidney&Ryan They were a clear match right from the start. Sidney Milholen met Ryan Kinsella the day after she moved into Elon University for her freshman year. She was a North Carolina debutant, and he was a baseball star. They hit it off right away, and their love blossomed. Just a few years later, Ryan proposed in front of the beautiful Biltmore Estate. Ryan and Sidney were married at the St. Josephs Chapel at Christ School in Asheville last December. The church has a stone exterior, vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and stained glass that created a dramatic and romantic setting for the timeless wedding. The bride walked down the aisle in a lace and satin gown that featured full-length lace sleeves with stunning cobalt heels underneath. The bridesmaids wore custom-made floor-length gowns in deep green velvet. Just before walking down the aisle, Sidney and Ryan passed each other a sweet love note to share an intimate moment and emphasize their connection. Guests started the reception with a cocktail hour at the historic Biltmore Forest Country Club. Interactive food stations were available during the dinner hour so guests could watch their food being prepared right before them. A stunning cake stood right in the center of the lobby for everyone to enjoy before the traditional cutting. Guests danced through the night to the sounds of wedding classics played by a live band. An enchanting Christmas tree towered over the dance floor, providing a warm glow with its twinkling lights. At the end of the night, Sidney and

Ryan made their way through an aisle of sparklers and made their great escape in a 1950s’ Rolls Royce. The wedding was made more special by the fact that it was completely planned and executed by the bride, who is a professional wedding planner. She brought her vision for a breathtaking wedding that took from the classic history of romance to life while also appearing as a beautiful, radiant bride and being able to enjoy the fruits of her labor. The gowns were designed just for the wedding, the food and drinks were abundant, and the guests enjoyed every unforgettable minute.

Lauren &Cartney What was meant to be a “summer of fun” ended up as the start of a beautiful love story. Lauren and Cartney were living separate lives in Aspen until they were introduced by mutual friends. She surprised herself by asking him and his friends to join her group for a birthday celebration. They saw each other again, and soon, they were inseparable. “Our relationship has persevered through my initial uncertainty, through career changes, through two years of Aspen-NYC long distance, and through a cross-country move,” Lauren said. The couple lives in New York, where Lauren is a ballet dancer and Cartney works in sales, but they were married in Pinehurst, NC, which is Lauren’s hometown. The storybook couple were married in The Fair Barn, where they introduced their New York family and friends to the tall pines, amazing golf courses and beautiful horses. The groomsmen started the wedding day with a round of golf at Pinehurst, and then retreated to the Magnolia Inn in the Village of Pinehurst to get ready for the ceremony as the bride and her bridesmaids prepared for the big day at a private home just minutes from The Fair Barn. 94

Rain pushed their horse track-side ceremony inside, but the day was still beautiful. Special attention was paid to all of the details. The groom’s suit boasted beautiful accenting on the inside, and the bride’s mother made the ring bearer’s pillow. The bridesmaid’s each donned matching shoes, jewelry and clutches in Tiffany blue, and the bride hand made all her hair accessories. The bride and her sister also created all of the favors - blue bottles etched with the couple’s name and wedding date, containing linen water. The bride made a breathtaking entrance to the reception with her formal gown, but then made a big performance of a dress change with a pulled-back curtain and bubbles. The reception featured a vintage seating area decorated with wedding pictures from both families. An array of amazing foods from oysters and shrimp to duck quesadillas to carved flank steak and salmon were served to guests followed by cake and cupcakes to get guests going. The newlyweds finished out the night with a final song with their guests then the shuttles took them to Dugan’s (the local pub) for late night festivities and memories galore!

Meghan &Zachary An initial case of mistaken identity didn’t derail the love story of Meghan Jones and Zachary Greene – it was just a quirky detail that enriched the wonderful seven years they spent together leading up to their beautiful wedding day. The two met at the Jarvis Residence Hall at Duke University in January 2009, when Zach was a Duke Cornerback and Meghan was a cheerleader. They were engaged almost six years later in front of a stunning Christmas tree at a resort in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic on Christmas Day. Meghan and Zach wanted to get married at their alma matter in the historic Duke Chapel, but the location is a coveted spot for getting married. Therefore, they had to camp out to get a wedding date for the chapel and their dedication was a success since they were one of the first couples to be married there after a year-long renovation. The couple had a gorgeous ceremony and reception characterized by classic elegance with personalized touches. When they started planning their wedding with Jocelyn Warren of A Paradigm Shift Event, Meghan and Zach weren’t completely sure about the details of their wedding day. Zach knew that he wanted to wear a red jacket, and Meghan had a general idea for the look. They relied heavily on their wedding planner to bring all the details together and create a wedding they loved. Meghan wore a Winnie Couture wedding gown, and Zach wore that custom red jacket that stood out on the altar. “My favorite part of the entire wedding day was getting to the end of the aisle and seeing Zach wipe a tear,” Meghan said. After the ceremony, guests headed over to The Rickhouse 98

in Durham, which reflected Zach’s love of baseball even though he played football at Duke. Guests enjoyed a unique view of the ballpark below. Inside, the venue featured exposed brick, reclaimed wood, and a distillery behind a glass wall. Art Deco inspired décor was featured for the reception, and the colors were in blush and ivory with pops of gold. Other accents included a mirror seating chart, sheer draping, a seating area overlooking the dance floor, lush floral designs, and the pièce de résistance of the décor - a custom ice sculpture, which held mouth-watering shrimp for cocktail hour. The happy couple danced the night away surrounded by friends, family, and love as they celebrated the first day of the rest of their lives together.

Allison& John Forget about high-school sweethearts; Allison and John have been together since middle school! They grew up literally loving each other, and when they were married in front of their closest friends and family, they made a vow to continue loving each other for the rest of their lives. They are committed to making this journey through life together, and they will spend more of it together than most couples! Allison and John were married at the top of the mountain at Banner Elk Winery in Banner Elk, NC. They enjoyed bright blue skies on a crisp fall day, and had a beautiful view overlooking the autumn foliage. Guests then moved into the Tasting Room at the winery for the reception, which featured a bohemian theme with a color palette of blue, cranberry, mint and copper. Theses colors continued in the floral arrangements that featured succulents, cotton bolls, dusty miller, dahlias and eucalyptus. The table was adorned with the mother of the bride’s handmade patchwork table runners and napkins, and matching patchwork coasters were given as favors. As the nighttime temperature began to dip, handmade quilts were 102

provided for guests to cuddle up with by the bonfire. The menu for the evening included chicken marsala, penne vodka, caesar salad and individual brown betty sweet potato cakes served in mason jars and made by the mother of the bride. Allison is a kindergarten teacher and her mother surprised her by asking each student to create a stuffed love bird to display on tree branches at the wedding. Each bird was accompanied by a signed card or picture from the student who made it. Under the stars, Allison and John were surprised again with a special lighting of Chinese lanterns. Allison always loved the thought of making a wish and sending it up in a Chinese lantern, so this was a special moment in the celebration provided by her parents. The magical evening came to a close as Allison and John made their exit through a tunnel of glittering sparklers. However, they reunited with friends to continue the celebration at an after-party at a nearby villa. The celebration continued until the early hours of the next morning, making memories to last a lifetime.

Jessica&Rory After an Isle of Palms Proposal, Jessica, and her fiancé, Rory set their sights on a Downtown Charleston wedding. The Cedar Room at the Cigar Factory was the perfect fit. The day of the wedding the bride and her bridesmaids spent the day getting ready at The Warren Room at the Westendorff, which was once the home and business of Jessica’s mother, grandmother, and great-grandparents. The bride wore a gown of intricate ivory lace with blush undertones and a geometric fingertip length veil from Traditions by Anna. The design of the event was inspired by bold geometric shapes and a watercolor palette of nude, blush and rich marsala. The design hinged on an incredible floral design, which was entrusted to Blossom Floral Artistry. A hanging arrangement came in at eight feet tall and six feet wide and was made of six hanging chandeliers in various geometric shapes with illuminated Edison bulbs. The structure was draped in organic vines and marsala blooms to create an asymmetrical arbor all backed by custom draping. The Cedar Room’s exceptional in-house catering team under the name Mercantile and Mash, provided the catering for the affair. During cocktail hour, guests were served roasted mushroom tartlets, fried risotto, deviled eggs, and bacon wrapped scallops with ginger miso sauce. 106

The guests then returned to the Cedar Room’s interior space for dinner and dancing. Three head farm tables anchored the center of the room while surrounding tables were draped with camel and champagne linens from Classic Event Rentals Raleigh. After the couple’s first dance, Jessica’s father surprised everyone by performing the lullaby that he used to sing to Jessica as a child. He learned how to play the song on the banjo over a period of two months, and recruited the bride’s brother to accompany him on the guitar. The reception-style dinner offered stations of charcuterie with house-made and imported meats and cheeses, a trio of sliders, and a shrimp and grits bar. Dessert was a gorgeous watercolor painted three-tiered cake made up of vanilla bean, red velvet, and carrot cakes. There were a variety of mini-desserts, including derby pies, and salted caramel chocolate tarts. All of the wedding party and their guests danced the night away and If they took a break from the dance floor, they retreated to the slow motion video booth. In addition to koozies, guests got to try their luck with “For Richer or Poorer” scratch off lottery tickets! The entire day from start to finish was photographed by the amazingly talented Vesic Photography, who captured every beautiful moment.

ENGAGEMENT PARTY TRENDS Getting engaged is a time to celebrate, so why not throw yourself a big bash to formally mark the occasion with family and friends? Your party doesn’t have to be as lavish as your rehearsal dinner or your reception – or it can be. The choice is up to you. You can plan an intimate backyard affair, or you can plan a sophisticated gala at your local museum or country club.
glamping We’ve all likely been camping at one point or another, but not all of us love the mosquitoes and the sleeping on the ground and eating burned hot dogs. Instead, throw a fun “glamping” party – a combination of “glamor” and “camping.” Rent some cabins at a beautiful attraction and host a rustic dinner that looks like Emeril himself served it. Set up a s’mores bar, serve specialty cocktails, and put out designer painted lanterns. sophisticated brunch A lot of
wedding celebrations take place in the evening, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have other options. Brunch is one of the most popular meals, and you can delight your engagement party guests by adding an upscale touch to brunch for your celebration. Set up a mimosa bar, serve gourmet omelets and waffles, and put out fine lace tablecloths and fresh cut flowers. chocolate & champagne bar A
cocktail party is a popular option for celebrating an engagement. The current trend puts a twist on this by making it a champagne party with chocolate treats. Serve a few types of champagne, and set up a bar that
includes chocolate truffles, gourmet cake, fine candies, and a chocolate fondue station. Choose treats that are unusual and interesting. Everyone can get a chocolate chip cookie from the grocery store, but not everyone can get a gourmet chocolate flourless cake that easily. Serve a few other drinks like espresso and a non-alcoholic option.
For example, if you choose an Italian party, you can serve a variety of pasta, bread, and pizzas over checkered and white linen tablecloths with tea lights and wine. Or, if you choose a travel theme, you can set up globes and decorations from around the world and serve a variety of global cuisine. upscale barbecue Barbecues have
sunset cruise You don’t have to
head down to the Caribbean to enjoy a beautiful cruise. If you live near the coast at all, there are likely many local, evening cruises available. Why not take your guests out on the water for a beautiful dinner and evening of cocktails to celebrate? You will all feel like you are sailing away to the tropics without having to deal with the logistics (or the expense) of actually doing so. travel party Destination weddings
are very popular, but not everyone can afford them (either the couple to be wed or the guests). You can give guests a taste of a destination affair by hosting an engagement party with a travel theme. You can either focus in on a specific location, or you can celebrate the idea of travel in general.
always been a popular party choice, but they tend to be very casual. It’s on trend right now to have an upscale barbecue party for your engagement. Serve gourmet options on fine china and linens in your backyard or at a local farm. Serve barbecue sliders, kebabs, and other delicious foods made locally. Take the plain, white tent and decorate it with inexpensive lighting and simple centerpieces. This spectrum of casual/formal ambiance will help to make everyone feel comfortable. Your engagement party is the chance to start celebrating this new adventure with your beloved. Take advantage of the opportunity by throwing yourself a really great party with your closest family and friends. wm

Heidi&Bill If the theme of this issue is celebrating the beautiful weddings of local industry professionals, then there is no better wedding to feature than that of beloved event professional Heidi Dawson of The Carolina Inn. For her intimate Christmas wedding, Heidi and her fiancé, Bill chose The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. Heidi began her career as a pastry chef, spending much of her early career working at various high-end luxury resorts in New England. Her foray into the front of house operations began at the Nantucket Island Resorts which was followed by many years traveling the world on behalf of the Christian Broadcasting Network in their donation department. For the past several years, Heidi has not only maintained but enhanced the stellar reputation of the Carolina Inn on the University of Chapel Hill’s campus as one of the state’s premier wedding and event venues. For their December 5th wedding, the pair knew that they wanted a destination venue away from their places of work, where friends and family could enjoy a mini-vacation together. What better place than the Biltmore at Christmas? 110
Weddings Magazine

Knowing that the venue would already have all the holiday trimmings in a way that only the Biltmore can, Heidi and Bill chose to embrace the Christmas theme. As a Triangle wedding professional, Heidi had her pick of the best in the business and people she already had a wonderful relationship with, starting with her planner Erin McLean of Erin McLean Events. “Her style and my style are very similar, so I hired her to be my designer and Day of Coordinator.” In the spirit of Christmas, the pair conceived a design plan that included big beautiful wreaths, gold sequin linens, and lots of greenery. The tone began with the invitations - gold letterpress with hand calligraphy and custom Biltmore stamps set the stage for a gorgeous event. The entire event was hosted at the Biltmore’s Lioncrest - the ceremony upstairs and the reception downstairs. The escort cards were hung from a Christmas tree. Wedding favors, a sweet treat from Heidi’s hometown of Williamsville, New York, were even wrapped to look like delicate little Christmas presents.

A gorgeous floral design that married Christmas hues with shades of blush with soft pink and ruby red roses, cranberries, evergreen elements, and lots of greenery, gold, and candlelight. The couple knew that they wanted a plated meal - as a chef food and wine was very important to Heidi, as was the symbolism and fellowship in sharing a meal together with friends and family. They served a three-course meal starting with a cheese plate. This was followed by a grilled romaine caesar and filet oscar, all paired with Biltmore wines. Wedding professionals are constantly surrounded by and attending weddings, so it was very important to the couple to find ways to make theirs personal and special to their love for each other. Examples of their sweet and unique details included a solo by a young lady that Heidi used to give voice lessons to, serving communion during their ceremony, and the Game of Thrones theme music as their recessional - Bill’s favorite! UNIQUE SAVE-THE-DATES The Save the Date card may not be as important as the wedding invitation, but it is becoming more popular. It does become important if you are planning a destination wedding or are going to invite a lot of guests from out of town. People need more time to plan when there is travel involved. You should also give people advanced notice when you are planning your wedding near a holiday.
The Save the Date card offers you more opportunities for creativity than the traditional wedding invitation. You can be a little more irreverent and quirky with the Save the Date – though you may want to watch how far you test the limits if you have a lot of conservative family members.
romance. Hire a photographer to take some costumed pictures of you and your fiancé in the same outfits and poses as those on the poster of a favorite movie. Your names would be listed as the stars, and your wedding date would be the release date. You could even do an online video trailer if you have the resources available.
instagram photo stickers A lot of
couples like to send a Save the Date card that features pictures of them together. Why not combine that with a sticker instead. Choose a couple of your favorite snaps from Instagram and turn them into small stickers mounted on removable paper. Include the stickers on your Save the Date card and let guests know they should put the stickers on their wall calendars.
calligraphy Formal, classic and timeless – start to finish calligraphy is a way to set the tone of your wedding right out of the gate. While on the more expensive side, handwritten calligraphy is perfect for the more upscale event. An alternative option to handwritten calligraphy is an actual font that can be purchased and printed out, which will save you time and money.

confetti bomb If you are looking for a more fun-loving way to start your wedding journey out with a “bang”, the confetti bomb is right up your alley! When your guests open their mail, give them a sense of your impending celebration right away with a confetti bomb. Mail this as a small tube, and when they open the top, a small burst of paper confetti will shoot out, along with a string of paper that includes your name and wedding date. infographic Another online option
is to create an infographic about your history as a couple and your wedding celebration. You can make pie charts about the reasons you want to get married, bar charts about the types of things people can expect at the wedding (delicious food, fun dancing, etc.) and other fun, creative graphics. Look at other infographics for inspiration and be as creative or as detailed as you like. This is another option you can distribute through email, saving you printing and postage costs. A boudoir session can be a great gift to your husband-to-be. You can present the photos as an unexpected surprise to him on your wedding day to let him know what he can expect on the wedding night! You can also give these photos to your husband as a fun anniversary gift. You’ll love looking back on these photos in the years to come. ALL PHOTOS Hush Boudoir

to worry about getting the perfect look yourself. In fact, getting this pampering before the shoot usually helps you feel sexier and more relaxed. “All of my clients walk out the door saying it was so much fun and much easier than they thought!” Cari shares.
“The best advice is to relax and realize that you are hiring a professional who will help you through the whole process,” says Cari Long of Hush Boudoir. “I guide my clients through wardrobe selection, very specific posing instructions, and facial expressions. It is my job to create images that showcase every woman in the most flattering and beautiful way.”
“For bridal boudoir sessions, clients can choose to bring their wedding lingerie, veil, wedding shoes and garter,” Cari explains. “Some bridal boudoir clients don’t bring bridal-type lingerie, but choose to bring fun, sexy pieces. I recommend anything from bra and panty sets, corsets, sheer slips, bodysuits and even shapewear.”
Consider booking a shoot for yourself before your big day or as a special way to celebrate an anniversary. wm

WHAT TO THROW Traditionally, wedding guests throw rice over the happy couple as they leave the reception for their honeymoon. It’s a festive final send off for the new couple. However, some couples prefer to change things up a bit to make every bit of their wedding day their own. Others worry about the environmental impact that rice can have, and so they search for other options.
edible options If you like the look
of rice but are concerned about the environmental issues, you can choose other edible options like bird seed or oatmeal. These tiny grains will look a lot like rice when being thrown, and they can be eaten by birds and other wildlife with no problems. You won’t have to worry about cleanup since nature will do the job for you. confetti Confetti is a festive option
for any celebration, and you can choose all types of materials and colors. Consider confetti poppers that shoot up into the air for a dramatic effect, or go for glitter or even sequins if you like a little more bling. If you like the look of confetti but are worried about leaving behind waste, consider eco-friendly plantable confetti. Another alternative is to make your own confetti out of brightly colored leaves and hole punchers. Creative, eco-friendly and beautiful!
with tea lights, mason jars filled with lights, glow sticks and more. You can ask guests to hold the lights in their hands, or you can choose a dramatic sendoff with lighted paper lanterns that are sent into the air. lanterns In the same vein as lights,
sending off the bride and groom with ethereal Chinese lanterns sent blazing into the sky, is an unforgettable way to close a perfect day. Lighting up the sky with well wishes and soft, floating paper lanterns has become a top trend in send-offs for weddings of all styles. balloons For a daytime wedding, you can get a dramatic sendoff with balloons instead. If you want to make it really special, ask your guests to write special notes that they attach to the balloons before releasing them. The notes could say something nice about love, or they could share some other positivity with the world. The people who find them will get a nice lift from reading them.
lights Some couples like the idea
of guests holding up lights to “light the way” to their new life. The most popular option in recent years has been sparklers, but you can be creative

flowers and leaves Flowers and leaves are nature’s own confetti. You can get them in a variety of colors, shapes, and textures to create
whatever look you want. Flowers add to the romantic ambiance you have created with your wedding, and leaves create a more rustic feel. Both are excellent options for the environmentally conscious couple because they will not harm the local wildlife. In fact, you may even be helping the local ecology by adding more compost materials. cap guns Loaded fun, what a way
to literally go out with a bang! Cap guns for weddings with a more rustic theme – especially outdoor ceremonies, are fun for guests and don’t leave a huge mess to clean up. Relatively inexpensive, you can also personalize these six-shooters and guests can take them home to reuse. What you ask guests to “throw” after your reception doesn’t have to actually be thrown, and it can be just about anything you want. It doesn’t even need to be tangible. Consider asking your guests to sing or chant you out as you leave your reception. The key is to choose something that feels right for you as a couple and gives you the final moment you want. wm

BOUQUET ACCESSORIES A big, beautiful bouquet is the perfect accessory to your wedding gown. But for some brides, they want the opportunity to do something a little different with their bouquet to show off their unique style. That’s why trends like paper bouquets and the brooch bouquet have gained momentum in the last few years. If you like the look of a floral bouquet but still want to do something a little different, consider bouquet accessories to add a little bling. Here are some popular bouquet accessories you might consider:
jewelry picks Jewelry picks look
almost like little, jeweled flowers. They have a long wire stem that allows them to be included right in the bouquet with the flowers. You can choose a variety of jewelry picks that have individual picks to add sparkle or highlight certain flowers, or you can choose picks that have jeweled designs at the top. A small gem resting in the middle of a rose or large bloom is beautiful.
sequin trim Running a bit of garland through your bouquet can create some nice visual contrast and create a beautiful border for your bouquet. Sequin trim is a nice way to get a little shine into your bouquet and to create a stark contrast. Choose gold, silver or even a colored sequin that complements the flowers well. beaded wire Get the same benefits,
feather spray Feathers can add an
but enjoy a subtle overall look. You can string pearls, glass beads, or metal beads on a thin wire and wind them through your blooms. You can also use the beaded wire to add a little sparkle to your bouquet holder if you don’t want to disturb the floral arrangement. Years later, you can use those beads for keepsake items, like a pair of earrings to wear on your anniversary dinner or a hair piece for your own daughter’s wedding.
interesting texture and contrast to your bouquet. You can place individual feathers in your bouquet, or you can use a feather spray. The feather spray is constructed just like the jeweled spray, but it has feathers attached instead of jewels or gemstones. The spray also keeps the feathers securely attached so that you aren’t “shedding” throughout your ceremony and reception.
bouquet charms You can attach charms to your bouquet with a jewelry pick, spray, or trim piece. Or you can use a bit of string or wire to attach the charms directly to a flower stem. The charms can be just like charms you would wear on a necklace, taking numerous shapes and made of either precious metals or gemstones (or a
spray If you want numerous gems
or a lot of shine for your bouquet, you can choose a spray. Instead of just one gem on a wired stem, the spray includes numerous gems on numerous wires attached to one central stem. You can use several just the way you would a spray of baby’s breath.

combination of both). You can also get charms that feature a rectangular or circular space for a photograph – such as a photo of you and your groom, a photo of your parents, or a photo of a loved one who is deceased and can’t be at the ceremony. bouquet holders It’s one of those things you don’t consider until you see it – the bouquet holder is simply something you slip your arrangement into that makes it easier to carry. For example, the actual plastic holder can be accented with everything from jewels to keepsake pieces of family members wedding dresses. Sort of like a “quilt” for the holder, this simple piece of plastic can easily be transformed into a striking part of the bouquet.
Adding the right bouquet accessories can help you achieve the look you want while also showing off your unique personality. You can choose just one of these accessories or create a combination that creates just the look you want. You can even use jewelry or other special items you have to add to your bouquet, making it sentimental as well as stylish. wm

COOKIE CAKE TRENDS Sometimes, a slice of wedding cake layered in frosting can be just too much to take after a night of feasting, drinking, and dancing. But a little taste of something sweet will still hit the spot. That’s when the cookie wedding cake is a perfect idea. The latest trend in wedding cakes incorporates one of the most beloved sweets with the classic wedding dessert. Some of these cakes look like standard creations, made out of cookie dough, but some are broken down into individual cookies arranged into a cake shape. thick cookie layers The standard
cookie cake is made just like a traditional cake but with cookies. Instead of pouring cake batter into pans, cookie dough is used to bake up thick, cake-like layers. These layers are stacked on top of each other with thick filling between them, just like a traditional wedding cake. Typically, these ‘cakes’ don’t have frosting. To add it would make it a little too sweet. Plus, guests wouldn’t be able to see the cookie layers. cookie-topped cakes Another
popular trend is to stack cookies on top of traditional cake layers. Choose simple cake layers in round or square shapes, decorate them with smooth buttercream or fondant, and then stack rows of cookies along the edges. This design allows you to combine the best of both worlds, and it gives guests the flexibility to remove the cookies if they choose. They can either eat the cookies alone, eat the cake alone, or eat them both together. piles of cookies Cookies are
imminently stackable, which means 170
Weddings Magazine
2017
you have a lot of decorating options. You don’t have to do anything more with your cookies than stack them up in layers to look like a cake. For example, you might stack Oreos three cookie layers high to get the base layer of your cake. Then you create a smaller circumference for the second “cake” layer and stack the Oreos another three deep. Keep doing this until you get the “cake” as high as you want it. This is the easiest and cheapest option. You don’t even have to hire a baker to make it for you. Plus, your guests will be able to serve themselves exactly how much they want. cookie cups More brides are choosing individual desserts instead of one large cake. If you favor cookies, you can opt for cookie cups that include another sweet filling, like a bit of fruit, mousse, or some chocolate.
Cookie dough is shaped around a muffin tin to get the cup shape, and the middle can be filled any way you like. If you don’t want to serve them in place of a cake, you can offer them as favors instead.
cookie bars Forgetting about
elaborate, decorated desserts or displays – just create a cookie bar and let your guests pick out their own. Set up a long table with plenty of plates and large canisters of different types of cookies. They can snack on the sweet treats of their choice during the reception or pick out a few to take home in bags or boxes that you provide. If you want to make the cookie bar extra special, consider adding some tubes of icing, sprinkles, and other decorations to let your guests decorate their own cookies. Dedicate a small part of the table to decorating, and include everything that guests might need to make their cookies and to keep the area tidy. Wedding cakes aren’t your only options for treating your guests at the end of your reception. Cookies are a beloved classic, and offering them will make your wedding stand out. Your guests will be pleasantly surprised at the unexpected change of pace, and they will love the tasty cookies. Combine a few of these ideas if you really want to go all out. wm

ADDING CUSTOM-FLAVORED ICE CREAM TO YOUR WEDDING Wedding cake may be the traditional dessert offering at most wedding receptions, but today’s couples are rethinking a lot of traditions and finding ways to make their wedding more unique to their personality and to offer their guests something a little different.
Custom flavored ice cream is a popular option for wedding guests. Everyone loves ice cream, and couples can choose custom flavors that match their personal tastes or that best suit the theme of the wedding. “In today’s world, brides are fortunate enough to not have a ‘cookie cutter’ wedding as it used to be years ago,” says Andia Xouris of Andia’s Homemade Ice Cream, formerly known as The Freezing Pointe, in Morrisville. “Today, many couples choose to forego the traditional cake and 192

have a dessert that better suits their likes and personalities, and many of them choose sundae bars. And what better way to top off the wedding cake then with some local, homemade ice cream!” Whether you choose to serve ice cream alone or in addition to a wedding cake, offering your guests a sundae bar is a wonderful option. Your guests will enjoy choosing their own dessert options, and they’ll feel like they are kids again with the excitement of being inside an ice cream parlor. “We have found that couples enjoy the experience of working with us in completely customizing their sundae bars,” Andia explains. “The couples have a private tasting at our showroom in Morrisville where they sample over a dozen flavors of ice cream and sorbet and hand pick their toppings from our large selection.” wm

WEDDING DJ CHECKLIST Your choice of wedding DJ is essential to the success of your wedding reception. Yet it can be difficult deciding on the right DJ when you are faced with so many seemingly great options. It is important that you research your options thoroughly and to seek feedback from others you know, as well as online reviews. Once you have your choices whittled down to a shorter list, you can run through a list of questions to determine the best match for you.
Are you available, and how far in advance do I need to book?
One of the first questions you are likely to get out is whether or not the DJ is available on your intended wedding date. If so, how far in advance you need to book the DJ to secure that date. He might be available now, but he might not be next week. DJs can get booked fast, especially during the busy season. How long have you been in the

different styles when it comes to selecting music. Some prefer to have total creative control, while others will be happy to play music off a list that you provide. Some have great recommendations for music, while others prefer that you choose these special songs yourself. Make sure you know where your DJ

get sick. Make sure that if your DJ gets sick, you don’t have to scramble with an iPod and your Uncle Joe. Make sure your DJ has a backup in case of illness or another emergency. How much time do you need for setup and breakdown? Do you need anything special? Your DJ should ideally be familiar with your venue, so should know exactly what might be needed for that site. For example, if you are getting married at a local farm, the DJ might need a lot of outdoor extension cords to run inside to an outlet. Cover all the things that will be needed and how much time will be needed so you can be prepared for the big day.
Finally, make sure you preview your DJ before you make a decision. Attend an event at which the DJ will appear or ask to a watch a video of an event. Asking all these questions and performing the preview will prevent any big surprises on the big day. wm

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR RECEPTION WITH A PHOTOBOOTH The photos from your reception are some of the best memories to come out of your wedding – aside from your new life together with your spouse, of course. You will treasure those photos of your family and friends celebrating together on one of the happiest days of your life.
Your photographer will snap photos throughout the reception, but with a photo booth, you give guests the chance to control their poses and groupings. They can be serious, silly or sweet. “Photo booths used to be a ‘nice to have’ feature of a wedding reception, but over the past few years, they have become what many believe should be ‘must haves’ at a wedding,” says Neal Zipser of NC ShutterBooth. “Photo booths keep guests more entertained and engaged and 196

allow the bride and groom to have a more fun, unique and memorable wedding.” You can include countless, fun props for your photo booth such as empty picture frames, mustaches, hats, feather boas, sunglasses and funny noses. Guests can choose which props they want and can mix and match for many different photos. Plus, Neal explains, “Technology has come a long way as for having different options. There are new options available with today’s photo booths such as green screen, slow-motion video booth, social media sharing and much more. Additionally, people can choose from a closed booth that offers more privacy to an open booth with a variety of background options.” Photo booths are the perfect way to spice up your reception and get guests to come out of their shell. Catch and keep these memories to share in a fun, creative way! wm
Traditional weddings are usually followed by a big reception where family and friends eat a meal, enjoy some drinks, have a slice (or two) of delicious cake and dance the night away. You get to see your grandma and grandpa cling sweetly to each other during one of the slow songs, and visit with college friends that you haven’t seen in ages. These days, more couples are choosing to keep the party going after the reception is over, heading out with a small group of close friends to really live it up in a way that you can only do when your parents and boss aren’t around. Some actually plan for the after party and make it a stylish affair. destination after parties Don’t
settle for the bar down the street; for the select few you invite to the after party – give them advanced warning that they need to pack for a short trip and be ready for fun. joyous events, but they can also be very stressful. You’ve spent months planning every last detail, and you’ve spent the whole day worrying about things like whether the cake would show up on time or whether your pushy aunt would instigate an argument. Don’t wait for the honeymoon to unwind – start relaxing right away by scheduling a massage for your after party. Some places offer massages late into the evening, so you can potentially schedule them after your evening reception. You can decompress with your new spouse or a few people in your inner circle, talking about the things you loved about the day and bonding together over your new memories. Then you can head off to your hotel suite for a truly relaxing evening together.

bars are popular for the night life, and a formal breakfast is a popular event for the day after the wedding. Why not combine the two? Hold a breakfast on a rooftop bar in the early
morning hours after your reception or in the traditional breakfast hours the next day. The rooftop seating will be a refreshing balm whether you are trying to sober up after a long night of partying or you are trying to restore after the previous day’s festivities. masquerade party If you’re
partying after the reception, play up the midnight intrigue by hosting a masquerade party. Choose a separate venue for the after party, and ask the guests you invite to show up wearing a fancy mask and the clothes to match if they feel so inspired. The more elaborate the costumes, the more special the atmosphere will be. Choose décor that is formal and a bit vintage. Consider giving guests a password that they have to share to get into the party to make it seem even more intriguing. You only get married once in your life, right? So why not take advantage of this opportunity to really go all out and celebrate? Don’t stop at the reception. Consider an after party to go out with your best friends and live it up in a way that you may not have a chance to again. wm

A BRIDAL LUNCHEON AT THE BRADFORD This beautifully designed bridesmaid’s luncheon honored the friends and family of one of Weddings Magazine’s own, and were hosted by the gracious Publisher and Director of Sales, Robyn Mangrum and Maureen Powell. They hand selected a team of talented local wedding vendors to celebrate the upcoming wedding of Jessica Siciliano, and helped her in thanking her loved ones for their support with a lovely afternoon of delicious food, sweets, and gifts. The Bradford in New Hill, North Carolina, with its quintessential provincial charm, set the perfect stage for this buzz-worthy event. The team of C and D Events, who also own the venue, helped to conceptualize and execute the adorable bees and honey theme.

Invitations and paper from PaperBuzz set the tone for a lovely event in color and motif. Menu cards and tags were in the shape of honeycombs, and a luxe gold bee was emblazoned on the elegant invitation atop creamy stationery. Darling details were plentiful and cohesive, from the gold honeycomb-shaped candleholders to the dreamy vintage furniture provided by Greenhouse Picker Sisters. The focal point of the decor was a stunning structure of floral design created by the incredible team at Blossom Floral Artistry. Woven into the antique ladder were fragrant dahlias mingled with succulents and roses in shades of sage, blush, and peach while hanging blooms dangled delicately from the rungs.

A perfectly curated menu created by Catering Works brought the theme to life in flavor and aroma. Each course captured the essence of honey in a magical and thoughtful way, starting with passed hors D’ouvres, which included honey horseradish shrimp and peach bruschetta with honey Chevré. The artfully plated lunch (atop beautiful vintage china from Greenhouse Picker Sisters) began with a layered fruit salad with orange blossom honey crusted brie, followed by a salmon filet with acacia honey and ginger butter with sage honey glazed root vegetables. A delightfully creative cocktail, Burnt Honey Boxcars, as well as dandelion honey lemonade, raspberry punch and spa water, were the perfect accompaniments. Dessert was a work of art in itself, as a gorgeous two-tiered cake with elegant layers of fondant with honeycomb texture and adorned with a gorgeous pastillage bumble bee in flavors of lavender and orange blossom from Cakes by Chloe. In addition to delightfully full tummies, guests were gifted with adorable personalized honeypots from Bumble and Branch, each with their own honeycomb dipper. The entire event was captured by the always talented Hooman Bahrani of Vesic Photography, who will also be photographing the couple’s wedding day.

A Southern Flair to the Traditional High Tea
CELEBRATEINSTYLE
Bridal showers are one of our favorite pre-wedding celebrations! This event is a sweet and oh-so-southern way of celebrating the bride to be. When it comes to decor, you can’t go wrong with fun and feminine, with the perfect personal touch. With that in mind, ever-talented Emily King of Whiskey and White Events chose to take a creative regional twist on a traditional ladies’ luncheon - a Southern version of an English High Tea! You can’t think of the Rose Hill Plantation without imagining pure and simple Southern elegance. This quintessential mansion in Nash County is an emblem of a charming bygone era and set the perfect stage for this lovely fete. The event design began with the decision to keep things delicate and feminine in the style of a traditional bridal shower. King chose a palette of neutral warm tones of tan, peach, and blushes with accents of gold, allowing the radiant blooms from Bloom Works by Catering Works to take center stage. Accents of lush red and citrus green intermingled with the ivory and soft pink flowers for a fun pop of color.

The team added another fun pop of color with the beautiful vintage teal glassware from Greenhouse Picker Sisters that coordinated perfectly with their teal bench seating and farm tables. Vintage china in hues of white and blue tied everything together and was topped with flowers at each individual place setting. Occasional seating offered alcoves of sweet conversation and intimate moments between guests and looked immaculate in the provincial setting of the Rose Hill mansion sunroom. The darling stationery suite from Paper Buzz united all of these elegant elements. A lush blue watercolor background was accented by an organic floral design, inviting guests for what was sure to be a delightful day of celebrations. To execute the Southern spin on the event’s high tea theme, Rose Hill created a heavenly menu of North Carolina favorites. Instead of hot earl gray tea, the guests enjoyed an assortment of refreshing flavored sweet teas. In lieu of scones and cucumber sandwiches, mini pimento cheese sandwiches and NC barbecue sliders. Other delicious finger foods included dainty mini’s of shrimp and grits, and crispy chicken and waffle bites. For dessert, the sweet team at Slice Pie Company provided an enticing assortment of handheld desserts and succulent pies instead of the expected petit fours. All of your grandma’s favorites were represented. Mini pies included key lime with real zest, State Fair Blue Ribbon Apple Minis, latticed strawberry rhubarb, and lemon cream pie shooters with real lemons and zest with crushed State Fair Blue Ribbon crust, as well as a classic pecan pie and Slice Bites made of chocolate pecan pie. In another unexpected detail, gorgeous greenery and flowers were pouring out of the drawer of the credenza that made up the dessert bar. We love this beautiful and organic element and the over-the-top visual that it created!

A
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
When you have a space as clean and minimal as the North Carolina Museum of Art, don’t be afraid to make a statement with opulent merlot, champagne and classic gold. The rich hues make the white space more inviting and warm, whether it be for an intimate gathering, or a fete of five hundred. The mix of an open space filled with decadent details earns this reception a place among the art.
Jocelyn Warren and her team from A Paradigm Shift Event, LLC, wanted to make this reception as elegant as the hosting venue. She saw the space as a chance to make something personal and unique, and the museum acted as an inspiring blank canvas for her to decorate and for Kate from Kate Pope Photography to capture. She began with covering the cake and sweetheart tables with champagne-sequined table linens and the guest tables in a lustrous neutral champagne Nova silk linen to let the dazzling details be the main attraction. It is an exquisite a-line with a delicate lace illusion bodice and flowing English net and silk organza skirt. Paperbuzz took inspiration from the elegance of the modern color combo to create the stationery suite. The flowing script of the invitations and menus, inked in the warm merlot color, added to the classic feeling of the reception. One thing that everyone can agree on is that we all scream for ice cream. Andia’s Homemade Ice Cream (a recent rebrand from The Freezing Pointe) shows a fun take on a dessert table, The choice of toppings perfectly complemented the palette of gold, champagne and merlot. The floral centerpieces, made by Purple Poppy Florist, were made of naturally arranged blooms, including lush white hydrangea, deep red dahlias, and beautiful blush roses. The color combination was further brought out by the mercury-gold vases and bronze mini pedestals, holding glass bowls holding floating candles, that cast a soft light, illuminating the golden accents. The flowers didn’t just adorn the main table, but three more magnificent arrangements were placed on and around the sweetheart table. On its own display table, the cake, made by Once in a Blue Moon Bakery, is a three-tiered confectionary wonder. It boasts a scripted “I do” ivory top tier, a metallic middle, and a bottom layer covered in edible flowers, all keeping in the same timeless color scheme. Bachelorette parties can get a bad rap. When some people think of the bride’s last fling, they can’t see past hot pink, leopard print, and a touch of naughty decor. Let’s face it, that look isn’t for everyone! So when All American bride Molly wanted a send off that was a little more her speed, Jennifer V. Events swung for the fences and threw her an all-star bachelorette bash in the style of America’s Favorite Pastime. Wedding and event planner Jennifer Viscosi drafted a talented roster of wedding professionals to create this fun and fabulous bachelorette party. Bull City was the name of the game, so they focused on throwing a party that celebrated the things that make Durham one of North Carolina’s most celebrated cities. A darling invitation suite from Live a Life by Design welcomed the team to Molly’s “Last Swing Before the Ring,” and gave the lineup of events. Before taking in a Bull’s game, the girls enjoyed a warm up at Bull City Cigar Co., where they participated in a fun and unique activity from another Durham staple: A hand-rolled cigar station for the bride and her maids to enjoy as an homage to Durham’s rich tobacco history.

The guests, donned in custom baseball tees from Hello LIVELY, indulged in delicious cocktails and local brews. The menu featured a fun twist on ballpark cuisine from Empire Eats Catering, including a double play of barbeque sliders and tacos. Slice Pie Company created a home run dessert: Precious little hand pies that let the girls stay agile and take in the game while they finished their treats! As a clever and charming touch, Bulls (a nod to the mascot of the team and the city itself) made an appearance throughout the decor in all shapes and sizes. Creative floral design from Knots and Such brought a feminine flair to the event, especially in an arrangement of red and white carnations in the shape of - what else - a baseball! Orange and blue, the Bull’s team colors, were proudly displayed throughout the fete, especially on the beautiful tabletop linens from Bull City favorite American Party Rentals. Their sequined Bulls Blue linens were in a league of their own! Long before Bull Durham introduced the world to “Hit Bull Win Steak” in 1988, the Durham has been a home base for the rich history of Hardball. This made it the pitch perfect spot for a creative and laid back day of fun for Molly and her bridesmaids, Hailey, Hunter and Janelle. To round out the evening, the ladies enjoyed cocktails in the Fun Zone with Wool E. Bull himself, and on deck to capture all of the game faces and major league moments was Heba Salama Photography. HIRING A CIGAR ROLLER If you are planning your wedding, you should consider hiring a live cigar roller for your reception. “Cigar Rolling is another form of live entertainment at a wedding reception. It adds a personal touch for those who want to partake in a cigar because they are being rolled on site and handed to the guests upon request,” says Mike Belmares of Bull City Cigars. “Cigars are making their way back into popular culture, media, movies, events, celebrations, and weddings. Having a cigar roller makes your wedding more customized and personal and will separate you from the rest.” You can choose the type of cigars that are offered at your wedding. For example, if you have South American heritage, you can ask that cigars are rolled in the style of 214

your country and with the appropriate tobacco. “Cigars can be even more personalized by having your own custom cigar band with the wedding date and initials of the bride and groom,” Mike explains. “While the roller is crafting cigars, a cigar concierge will be there to answer any questions the guests may have, cut the cigar for the guests and provide a light if needed,” Mike says. “Cigar etiquette is so important and necessary to enjoy a cigar the way it is supposed to be enjoyed. Having a cigar concierge will allow that experience to happen.” wm

GAME CHANGER MAKEUP The right wedding makeup can have you looking like the glamorous goddess you want to be on your big day. The wrong makeup can create an undesired look of being tired, older, or lackluster. Keeping up with the trends can help you create a look that is contemporary and gorgeous. Just be careful that you don’t choose anything will look dated later – you don’t want your wedding photos to elicit the same response of those 80s’ photos with the bright blue eyeshadow!
bold looks Many brides are choosing bold looks that are more reminiscent of the runway, including false eyelashes, winged eyeliner and strong eyeshadow colors in shades of brown, gray and even purple. Many opt for airbrushing to create a flawless foundation and a complexion that is magazine ready. Some even get airbrushing to cover their tattoos to create a classic look for their wedding. These bolder looks are paired with strong, thick eyebrows and nude lips. “no makeup” look Many photos of celebrities that appear in magazines are made to look like they aren’t wearing makeup. In fact, they are wearing dozens of products to get that naturally effortless look. Many brides are choosing this “no makeup” look to create a soft, romantic look. The makeup used for this trend should complement your natural coloring. The idea is to highlight your features to make them pop. That may mean just a little mascara, some peach or pink shadows around your eyes and cheeks and some gloss. natural glow Giving your skin

you have a natural glow. You will seem like you have a light shining from the inside and have a naturally radiant beauty. Fortunately for those of us whose genetics don’t give that to us naturally, you can achieve it with makeup! The right highlighting (contrasted with contouring) will make your skin shine. The most important parts to highlight include the cheekbones, the inner eye corner and the line under your eyebrows.
ombre lip The ombre trend has infiltrated everything from wedding cakes to floral arrangements. It should come as no surprise that it’s part of a makeup trend, as well. The ombre lip includes two shades – one that is lighter in the middle part of your lower lip and a darker shade to fill in the rest of the lip. The lighter shade serves as a highlight that makes your lips look bigger and poutier, which can complement just about any look.
pink, glossy lips Pink, glossy lips
colored eyeliner If you want to go
can also give you a youthful glow. Even if you select relatively subdued makeup, having glossy lips can make your overall look pop. Choose soft pinks that complement your skin tone and cover it with a shiny gloss that is either tinted with a complementary color or that is clear.
really bold, you can choose a colored eyeliner. Purple is very popular, but you can also get away with blue or green. Use it to accent just one part of the eye, such as the outer corner, or you can use it for the full lower line. Use just enough of the liner to create a pop of color – not so much that you overwhelm your makeup.
eye gloss Eye gloss does the same
thing for your eyes that lip gloss does for lips. It is a creamy shadow that creates a wet, shiny look on your eyes that appears that a natural glow on your skin. Your eyes will pop with eye gloss. Just choose natural or neutral shades, like browns and pinks.
Experiment with some of these makeup trends to see what looks best on you and what makes you feel your best. You may want to combine a few of the trends, or you may have a totally different look in mind that will inspire others to start a new trend – it’s your big day, anything goes! wm

WINE TIME: A PAIRING FOR EACH COURSE Wine is one of the most common alcoholic beverages served weddings. Instead of just adding it to the open bar, consider creating a wine pairing for each course of your dinner, from the appetizers to the dessert.
STEAK OR BEEF For a good steak, a high-tannin wine is
the best choice. A cabernet sauvignon is the perfect option. Or you can pair a merlot with other beef dishes. DESSERT Most people will serve champagne when the wedding cake is cut. However, there are many options for wine pairings when it comes to the dessert course.
APPETIZERS The rule of thumb in serving wines is to
serve from light to heavy, and from whites to reds. For the appetizer course, pass a light white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc. This citric wine pairs well with salads and light fish, so consider choosing tuna or crab for your appetizers. FISH OR CHICKEN COURSE A chardonnay is slightly heavier than the Sauvignon Blanc, and recommended for white meat dishes. DUCK OR GAME You’ll need a full-flavored red wine for duck or game bird courses. These dishes have a distinctive flavor, and the best match for them is a hearty pinot noir.
224
Weddings Magazine
2017
Whether you serve cake or another dessert at the end of the meal, you’ll need to choose a sweet wine such as a late-harvest, or ice-wine. The grapes for these wines are harvested while they are frozen, giving them a concentrated, sweet flavor. Your wedding is a wonderful occasion to serve a formal meal and celebrate in style. Take advantage of this opportunity and choose a sophisticated wine pairing with your meal. Work with the caterer to choose the exact brands to match the best pairing for each course. wm

HAIRSTYLES & NECKLINES: WHAT WORKS BEST TOGETHER You may have the most beautiful wedding gown, the perfect shoes and the perfect jewelry, but if you don’t get your hair just right, the whole picture will be off. The overall picture is beautiful, but you just know that something is off. The key to getting the right match between your wedding gown and your hairstyle is to consider the neckline of the gown. long, loose curls with a v-neck
A v-neck is going to show off more off your décolletage and potentially a lot of skin. Wearing an updo will only draw more attention to that area, which may be too bold for a wedding look. Instead, you should wear a long and loose hairstyle, like beach waves or gentle curls. This will create a soft and romantic look that contrasts well with the sharp neckline. The exception is if you have a short frame or shorter torso. By wearing an updo with a v-neck, you will elongate your neck and give your upper body length. strapless gown with a chignon
You can get away with wearing a lot of different hairstyles with a strapless gown, which has been a popular choice for wedding dresses in recent years. One of the most elegant options is a soft chignon, which is like a loose bun at the nape of your neck. Pair it with loose tendrils framing your face to create a soft, romantic look that is feminine and delicate. Long, loose hairstyles can also look wrong with a strapless gown.
However, if you have a ball gown that is very formal, the loose hairstyle will be too casual. Make sure your hairstyle also matches the tone of the gown.
you hang it on the side with the bare shoulder so that guests can still get a good look at the one shoulder of the dress.
top knot with a high collar
side-swept hair with a dramatic
As your collar goes up, so should your hairdo. A high neckline or a choker looks lovely with a topknot. You can make the topknot smooth and sleek, or you can give it a “messier” look with some loose strands or twists worked into the style.
back The plunging edge doesn’t have
If you’re not interested in an updo, you should at least to pull your hair back behind your shoulders, such as in a long braid. Just don’t leave your hair hanging free, and don’t let it drape in front of the gown to block the design details. updo with a one-shoulder
to be at the front of the dress – it can also be in the back. You can have a deeply plunging back or no back at all to your dress. Don’t detract from the drama of that look by wearing hair that hangs right in the middle of your back. Wear your hair to one side, no matter what style you choose. If you want your hair to hang loose, pull it over one shoulder to hang at the front. If you pull your hair up, choose a sideswept chignon, braid or pony. The key is to keep the hair off your back throughout the festivities.
neckline Wearing an updo with a
dress with one shoulder will give a clear view of the gorgeous design of the dress. Any other style will get in the way of that neckline or obscure the details. If you absolutely cannot bear the thought of wearing an updo, you can also get away with wearing a side braid or ponytail. Just make sure
Choosing the right hairstyle for your wedding gown will help you make a bolder statement on your wedding day. You’ll wow your guests and get photos of yourself that you will treasure for years. wm

THE BEST SPA SERVICES BEFORE YOUR BIG DAY Getting spa services before your wedding can not only make you feel more relaxed, but the right services can also help you to look your very best. SPRAY TAN A sunless tan will give your skin that sunkissed glow so that you look vibrant and healthy. Plan to get the tan two days to a week before your wedding day. The spray takes 10 hours to set, so you don’t want it rubbing off on your gown. Giving yourself a little extra time will also ensure you have to correct or fade the tan if it shows up too orange or splotchy. Test the tan a few months in advance, to give you an idea of how long it will last and exactly what it will look like. area, armpits and face. Make sure the days leading up to your wedding are not the first time you get waxed. You could have an unexpected adverse reaction. Get waxed a few months before to try it out, and then get waxed again a few days to a week before your wedding day. MANI/PEDI FACIAL A good facial will make your skin look smooth and vibrant. Again, make sure you get the facial you want a few months before to see how your skin reacts. Then get your facial in the week leading up to the big day. Getting the right spa services will make you look and feel like a queen on your wedding day. Consider other services like a massage, teeth whitening, or body scrub, as well. It’s the little things that make a picture perfect bride and timing is everything when it comes to beauty! wm

LASH OPTIONS FOR YOUR BIG DAY Big, beautiful lashes can enhance your natural features and make you look and feel gorgeous on your wedding day. But not all of us have been blessed with the genes to have thick, luxurious lashes naturally. Fortunately, there are many products and services that can give you the look even if Mother Nature didn’t help you out in that department and Amazing Lash is nothing short of amazing. “We do individual eyelash extensions,” says Christine Wells of Amazing Lash. “They are applied one to two millimeters away from the lash line, so the adhesive never comes in contact with the skin. We use a medical grade adhesive that is patented by our company.” Brides can choose from four different styles, as well as different lengths and thicknesses. That allows them to get just the look they want for their big day. “The style is mostly chosen based on the client’s eye shape,” Wells shares. “Most brides tend to go a little more dramatic for their wedding. They can always change their style after their initial appointment.” Since the lashes are applied individually, it takes about 90 minutes to two hours to finish the application. Brides are encouraged to come in for an initial application about three weeks before their wedding and then to come back the day before the wedding for a touch up. “Every person loses one to eight natural lashes per day,” Wells explains. “The extensions are going to grow out with your natural lashes. Since they are applied away from the lash line, they will fall out with your regular lash cycle.” Wells says that the lashes should be washed twice per day with an antibacterial soap and then brush them out so they are light and fluffy again. “They are very low maintenance, and most women love them because they never have to apply mascara anymore, and it cuts out the majority of the makeup routine in the mornings,” she says. The right lashes will set the tone for your overall look on your wedding day! wm 230

Whether you are the bride to be, the mother of the bride, or one of the attendants, everyone wants to look their best on a special wedding day. You can buy a gorgeous gown and get a professional to do your hair or makeup, but if you really want to shine, you need to prepare your skin so that it is fresh and healthy.
“Topical treatment products at home can help prepare your skin and address concerns like acne and uneven pigmentation leading up the big day,” says Mary Shaver, RN, BSN of Davis and Pyle Plastic Surgeons. “A good skincare regimen should include the basics of a good sunscreen, exfoliation and antioxidant support.” Establish a good skincare regime at least six months before the wedding, and then consult with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon about potential treatments such as peels, laser treatments, Botox and fillers. “Botox is one of my absolute ‘must-have’ treatments before a wedding,” Shaver says. “However, Botox as miraculous as it may be, is not instantaneous. Botox takes two 232

weeks to develop and lasts three to four months. Ideally brides should come in six months before the wedding so we can perform a complete treatment and have time to review your results. If you can’t come in six months before, allow six weeks before the wedding. That’s two weeks for the Botox to work, two weeks for a follow up visit, and two weeks for any tweaks that are necessary at review to kick in.” Shaver explains that lip fillers are also popular for brides-to-be, and these treatments usually last about nine months. Light therapy, laser treatments and peels are also used to correct issues like brown spots, fine lines, large pores, redness and excess hair. However, these treatments are cumulative, so you must get three to six treatments to see results.
“I would recommend a gentle exfoliating enzyme peel, and Dermaplaning treatment two weeks prior to the wedding,” Shaver says. “This treatment gets rid of all your dead, dull skin and pesky facial hair. It will give you a healthy glow without using harsh exfoliants, and your makeup will glide on.” Shaver cautions that skin treatments are not one-size-fits-all, so it is important that you work together with your doctor to come up with a customized plan for your skin concerns. She also adds that you should remember to treat the skin on your shoulders, décolletage, back and hands to really look your best for photos. wm MACARONS from Sugar Euphoria FLOWERS by Blossom Floral Artistry

THE BUDGET
A CLOSER LOOK AT WHAT THINGS REALLY COST
Every magazine tells you what you can afford. We tell you what things really cost. Here’s a guide to what some wedding related services cost in and around the Triangle. Keep in mind, we can only provide a range quality and specifics. Final selections determine the final price. accommodations
Reserving a block of rooms at one of the Triangle’s full service hotels should garner one of their better rates. Expect to spend $85 to $215 per night, depending on the hotel you select and the time of year.
ceremony facility rental fees If you’re not a member of the church hosting your ceremony, site fees typically begin at $250 and can be as high as $1500. For non-church facilities, including gardens, B&Bs, and historic spaces expect to spend $1500-$2000 for ceremony site rental.
ceremony music
Single musicians like harpists, organists and pianists generally cost between $150 and $300 for the preludes and ceremony. A string quartet should range between $575 and $1000 depending on the quality of the musicians. Soloists range from $75 to $300, depending on the number of selections required and the reputation of the singer.
your gown
The prices of wedding gowns vary widely by designer, fabric quality and construction quality. At a national gown warehouse, you can expect to spend $200 to $800. Most local full service bridal salons carry gowns that range from $500 to $2000, with lots of selection at every price point. The local salons that carry couture gowns begin at $1500 and can go above
236
Weddings Magazine
2017
$7000. Remember to count on $200 to $500 for alterations when you budget for your gown. Budget between $200 and $3000 when budgeting for your veil and accessories.
hair and makeup
For bridesmaids, expect to spend between $25 and $40 for simple updos completed in a salon and between $12 and $30 for in-salon make up application. Typically, the bride is more expensive, due to the care and time taken with her makeup and hair. In a salon, expect to spend $40-100 for bridal hair and $20-50 for makeup application. On-site application is typically more expensive, but far more convenient and practical for a busy wedding day. Expect to spend $40-95 per maid for makeup and hair, and $200-$400 for the bride. If looking your best is of utmost concern, hire an artist for the entire day, which includes initial application and touch ups throughout the day. Plan to spend $1000 to $2500 for this luxury.
invitations
Prices and quality vary widely depending on the thickness and quality of the paper, the type of
YOURBUDGET
lettering you choose and finish details of the invitation. For 100 invitations, you should expect to spend $100-150 for a set from a mail order company. For 100 thermographed invitations from a mid-range supplier, expect to spend between $200 and $500 for the set. Custom designed, hand embellished and specialty invitations can cost from $300 to $1000 for 100.
wedding consultants
Service fees for wedding consultants vary widely based on the number of hours you need and the reputation of the consultant. Day-of-services range from $500 to $2000 and full-serviceplanning ranges from $1500 to $7000. Be sure to thoroughly compare each consultant’s services. Many offer different combinations of services and hours in packages, but call them by similar names. If you’re interested in a planner but can’t afford a package, ask about hourly consulting or associates.
photography
Photographers prices vary based on the quality of the work, the skill of the artist, the hours of coverage, the amount and type of film shot, the type of processing, the number of finished prints and the type and quality of the album included. Expect
to spend $5,000 to $11,000 on a top photographer, who’s work has been seen in national wedding publications. The second tier of photographers charge $3000 to $6000. There are a number of traditional and a few photojournalists charging $1000 to $3000. Consider having a great photographer for a shorter period of time. How many images of dancing do you need anyway? Opt for a smaller number of finished proofs and a longer coverage day from the best photographer you can afford. A few good images are always better than a lot of photos you don’t like.
videography
Expect to spend between $700 and $5000 depending on the number of cameras covering your event and the amount of editing required on the finished product. Most couples spend between $1000 and $2000 on their wedding video. This includes one or two cameras, some editing, and several finished DVDs.
reception facility rental fees
There may be no facility rental at private clubs, where fees are often waived for members. At hotels and banquet halls, the fee ranges from $1000 to about $2000. Couples with a
$20,000 budget spend about $1000 on facilities. Need to save money here? Ask if the facility fee can be waived if you meet a certain minimum. Or consider having your ceremony and reception in the same place – which may reduce the fee.
tents
Tent prices vary widely depending on the size of the tent needed. Expect to spend between $1000 and $4000 on a frame tent, depending on the size area you’ll need tented. Draping the interior of the tent can range dramatically, depending on your use of a stock ($1500 to $2000) or custom ($3000 to $15000) liner. Lighting also varies widely depending on the type of lighting selected, but expect to spend $400 to $2000 to light your tent.
linens and rentals
Expect to spend $7 to $12 per table on basic white or solid color linens. Specialty linens, including prints and silks, can range from $15 to $28 per table. Chairs range from $2.00 for folding plastic chairs and $4.00 for white wood folding chairs to $6 to $8 per chair for chivari ballroom chairs or specialty bar stools. the food
Most reception facilities and caterers in the Triangle price alcohol based on consumption. This means you’ll pay only for the alcohol that your guests consume. Expect to spend between $14-28 per person if you’re offering a beer and wine bar for four hours. Remember, you’ll have to pay a service fee (generally 18-22%) and sales tax on your bar tab.
This is your largest expenditure and the toughest to estimate. Hors d’oeuvres parties start at about $19 per person and can go as high as $72 per person. (We’ve even seen some $200 per person parties!) Price depends on the selections that you make with your caterer. Keep in mind that there is an additional fee for carvers, servers, and bartenders. This cost is either figured in a staff-cost expenditure, or it’s included in the 20% service fee. Though most couples don’t expect it, seated meals can sometimes be the most affordable option. Portion sizes are very controlled, so caterers know exactly how much of each ingredient to order. Seated dinner prices range from $18 to $85 per person, with averages in most clubs and hotels around $35 per person. Buffet dinners are often the most expensive option. Caterers must prepare more of each item to ensure that they don’t run out of food and that means waste. Buffets generally start at $26 per person and go up to $60 per person, with averages around $38 per person. You’ll want to remember that you’ll have an additional 20% gratuity and 7% sales tax added to the final bill.
the cake
transportation
The prices of flowers vary widely based on flower types and the labor required in arrangement styles. In general, you can expect to spend between $75 and $400 on your bouquet. Price depends on the size of the bouquet and the blooms you select. Bridesmaid’s bouquets are usually more modest and range from $75 to $225. Boutonnieres and corsages range from $9 to $30. Arrangements for your ceremony can vary widely, but expect to spend at least $200 on anything of substantial size. Centerpieces for your reception range from $50-$100 per table for something small and simple to $350 per table for a large elaborate arrangement.
bar fees
Wedding cakes range from $2.50 per slice to $7.00 per slice. The average Triangle baker charges $4.00-$4.50 per slice. Keep in mind that there are slice

Traditional limousines are widely available in a variety of colors and sizes. Expect to spend between $100 to $155 per hour for a traditional
limousine with a three-hour minimum on most weekends. There’s also a 15-20% gratuity added to the overall bill. Larger scale limos, limo SUVs and specialty cars are typically more expensive.
reception music
If you’re thinking of a DJ, budget between $800 and $1200 for a fourhour reception. The cost of bands vary widely. For a local party band with four to five members, plan on $2000 to $4000. If you plan to hire a band with more regional appeal or more members, you’ll need to increase your budget by as much as $4000.
wedding favors
Favor costs vary depending on the item selected. Most couples spend between $2 and $5 per person on favors and packaging. Options like birdseed and bubbles are the least expensive, and items like custom poured chocolates, mini cakes and sterling silver gifts are most expensive, sometimes reaching $10-$15 per person. wm

THE BEST RENTALS The vintage look is back in a big way, especially for weddings. Couples are wearing vintage wedding attire, decorating their receptions with a vintage look, and driving away at the end of the night in vintage vehicles. Adding these vintage items gives your wedding old school style and flair with a modern twist. Fortunately, many rental services are available to help you get this look without having to spend a fortune.

popular for weddings right now. You can create a pile of them around the altar or a decorative area. For example, you can set up a stack of them next to a small end table that holds your guest book or that has a chalkboard sign providing guests information or pointing them in the direction of the reception. Create several of these areas to make a bigger impact with the décor.
If you have the budget for it, you can also consider renting enough vintage chairs to seat all your guests during the reception dinner. dinnerware Some popular vintage
choices include colored goblets, patterned plates and other dinnerware, and colored cake stands. Vintage dinnerware is so colorful and unique that you can use it both for serving your guests and for decorating the tables. Create a beautiful arrangement that complements your flowers and other décor.
frames Vintage frames are perfect for chalkboard signs. If you think you may want to reuse them after the wedding, you can often find vintage frames at thrift shops and then paint the glass with chalkboard paint. However, if you just want them for the wedding, you can often rent chalkboards with vintage frames from a vintage rental company.
lighting, lanterns, & candelabras
Lighting is a great way to set the tone for your wedding and even to “decorate” it. Vintage chandeliers are a great choice for your rentals. You can hang them over your tables or your seating areas. Vintage lanterns and candelabras can also be used for accent lighting. They can light up outdoor areas, or they can use around conversation areas. 240

coolers & tins Outdoor weddings
are very popular, such as rustic farm weddings and English garden weddings. You can keep your guests cool and maintain the theme with vintage coolers and tins. Think old metal coolers with classic logos like Coca-Cola, or you can get big, metal tins in which to put ice and drinks. Pair these coolers with other vintage
paraphernalia such as wooden crates and side tables. expert opinion Amanda and Holly,
owners and stylists of Greenhouse Picker Sisters, share advice on vintage rentals: “In our experience vintage rentals are items that the wedding party and guests can connect with. It is like bringing a piece of home to every venue that adds such a personal touch and flavor of the bride and groom. Our wood chairs range from $4 to $7 dollars, and our upholstered furniture ranges from $30 dollars to $250 depending on the piece of furniture. We thrive on bringing elements that set every wedding apart by bringing one of a kind pieces and wow factors.” When you think of vintage rentals, things like a vintage Rolls Royce or linens may spring to mind, but you may not realize exactly how many accessories you can rent. Take your guests back in time by fully outfitting your wedding, or just add a few special flourishes. Talk to a local vintage rental provider to find out what equipment, décor and accessories are available. You may be able to get a package deal, depending on what you rent. wm

ROLE WITH IT! WHAT DOES THE BRIDAL PARTY DO? Being
asked to be in a wedding is a huge honor, but you need to make sure you are up to the task. You’ll have to do more than just stand there and look gorgeous! The bigger the role, the more responsibilities you will have. Make sure you know what they are so that you can make your friend or family member’s wedding wonderful and as easy as possible (on them, of course). Drop the ball on your duties and you can make the wedding day memorable for all the wrong reasons. If you are a bride or groom-to-be, make sure that you understand what roles your bridal party plays so you convey these responsibilities when you make your choices. That way, everyone is on the same page.
maid of honor The maid of honor
is one of the biggest roles in the bridal party. She provides logistical and emotional support for the bride as her second-in-command. The maid of honor helps to organize and pay for the bridal shower and/ or bachelorette party. She holds the bride’s train and bouquet at the altar, she signs the marriage license, and holds the groom’s ring for the bride. She will collect gift envelopes at the reception, give a toast, and help get others dancing. And, of course, she should listen to the bride and be an emotional support throughout the day, as well as remind the bride how beautiful she looks. best man The best man is the other major role in the bridal party. The best man is the groom’s second-incommand, and he will be asked to give the officiant the fee, pay other vendors, and sign the marriage license. The best man will hold the actual wedding ring in his pocket, even if there is a ring bearer (who is usually just ceremonial). The best man also organizes and pays for the bachelor 242

party, gives a toast at the reception, and helps get others dancing. bridesmaids & groomsmen The
rest of the bridal attendants will pitch in where they can with prewedding and wedding day tasks, such as sending invitations, making favors, putting out place settings and more. They are also tasked with getting people to dance and provide information for guests. Groomsmen also serve as ushers and decorate the couple’s “getaway car.” junior bridesmaids & groomsmen
If you have younger siblings or cousins that you want to include in the wedding, you might have a junior bridesmaid or groomsmen. These bridal attendants are usually between 9 and 16. They have the same roles as the bridesmaids and groomsmen as logistical and emotional support. You just won’t be asking them to pay anyone or to talk to you about your cold feet. For example, they’ll help you get ready and may put favors by the place settings.
flower girl Flower girls carry a
small basket and spread flowers on the aisle before the bride makes her grand entrance. Most flower girls sit down during the ceremony with their parents. Their only other job is to look adorable and take pictures with the bride and family! ring bearer The ring bearer makes his way down the aisle just before the flower girl or walking by her side. He carries a pillow with two (usually fake) wedding rings tied to it. His role is also to look adorable and take photos with the bridal party, as well.
For any of these roles, you can change the genders and the roles as you choose. You can have a ring bearer who is a girl who actually holds the rings and carries them in a basket. It’s just helpful to have a good idea of what the traditional expectation is and then make changes as you see fit. That way, you will have no unexpected surprises on your wedding day. wm

CATERING TO GUESTS These days, more and more people have food allergies. Some food allergies can result in minor symptoms like itchy skin and maybe some hives, but others can cause major reactions that can be life-threatening, such as a swelling of the airway that makes it hard or impossible to breathe.
If you are planning your wedding, your own allergies (or lack thereof) are not the only ones that matter. You also need to think about the food allergies that your guests might have – otherwise, your big day could become memorable for reasons other than how beautiful your gown was. You don’t want your cake cutting to be interrupted by someone collapsing on the dance floor, nor do you want any of your guests to be in distress during one of the happiest days of your life.
person. Most people who have serious allergies will be sure to include this information or to seek you out and give it to you. However, some will just wait until they are at the wedding to ask about what ingredients are included in the menu. Don’t leave any of this to chance. Make sure that you make contact with each guest to get a clear answer about all food allergies and then plan your menu around them.
avoid major allergens Of course,
It is important that you plan your menu carefully and that you work closely with your caterer to make sure that your reception menu is not only delicious but is also safe for all guests. Here are a few things you can do to make that happen: ask about allergies The easiest way
to know which guests have allergies and what allergies they have is to ask them directly. You can include this on your RSVP card, just as you would ask them if they prefer the chicken or the beef. Include a line asking them to indicate any allergies if they have them. Follow up with any people who do not fill out this line directly by phone or in 244
Weddings Magazine
2017
not everybody actually RSVPs. Some people just show up to the wedding unannounced, leaving you scrambling to find them a place to seat and counting up the number of plates to make sure you planned for enough food. The additional complication of unexpected guests is that you might not have foods that are safe for them to eat if they have food allergies. To make your wedding safe for everyone, you can just create a menu that avoids all major allergens, such as peanuts, shellfish, gluten and milk. It’s not as difficult to create a menu without these ingredients as it may seem. Most caterers are well aware of food allergies and have suitable substitutes. Work closely with your caterer
to identify the major allergens to avoid and to create a menu that will be safe for everyone while still being delicious. Also, work with your caterer to have a few substitute meals or side items on hand that are completely allergy-free in case you have a guest show up who has special needs. offer a variety of options You
don’t have to make your entire menu free of allergens, but you can still offer your guests with allergies some safe foods by offering a variety of options. For example, if your pasta dish is a lasagna that’s oozing with cheese, you can offer another pasta dish that is tossed with a simple marinara sauce and that’s made with gluten-free noodles or zucchini noodles. If you have a chocolate cake with peanut butter filling, you can offer chocolate cupcakes with a ganache frosting or a simple dessert with fresh fruit. Make sure that there are enough options to meet the needs of all your guests, whatever their dietary restrictions might end up being. Not only will you ensure that those with food allergies have enough options to create a delicious meal, but you will also meet the needs of guests who just have food sensitivities or dietary preferences. By
providing options, you also end up making your cousin who’s on Paleo happy while also satisfying your sister who just went vegan. Everybody gets something delicious to eat, and you don’t have to deal with anyone complaining that your main course has cheese. label all foods Labeling foods can
help your guests make safe choices even if you think you have all your bases covered in your menu selections. Someone might have a rare allergy to a food dye or additive that you didn’t consider or that you just couldn’t eliminate from every item in your menu. Or you may have eliminated gluten from the pasta but not the salad dressing, which you didn’t consider. There are just too many opportunities for foods to have allergens in them. Just ask the caterer to put a label on each dish that outlines all the ingredients it contains. This can be done discreetly on the back of the card that shows the name of the dish. The name card can also highlight the presence or absence of known allergens, such as noting that a dish is gluten-free or that another dish contains peanuts. Just make sure that your ingredient list includes all the ingredients, not just the main items. Also make sure to include the ingredients of the ingredients, such as what’s in sauces you use or what’s in the pasta noodles.
create a separate allergy-free table Using nature as the inspiration
for your wedding invite is another unique option. A great example of this trend is to use real elements from nature as a part of the actual invitation — add pressed leaves or dried flowers to the invite, and these natural elements can be printed on or even stamped and make an amazing first impression! Some people are so sensitive to food allergies that they cannot even risk eating foods that have been prepared in the same place as other foods that contain allergens. This is especially true for people who have gluten or peanut allergies. To protect these guests, it is best to create a table full of allergy-free foods that have also been prepared in an allergy-free environment. Make sure that you make a note of this on the table so that your guests with allergies will feel safe serving themselves from it and so that your guests without allergies do not help themselves to the table and eat up all the foods meant for other guests. You can also seek out your guests with allergies to let them know about the precaution that has gone into creating this table and preparing the foods that appear on it so that they are reassured about their choices. In the most serious of allergy cases, you might even want to consider asking your caterer to personally deliver
a meal to that guest, even if you have a buffet set up. Of course, serving a seated dinner will eliminate this issue entirely and ensure that all guests have exactly what they prefer and what they need. Then your wedding day can be enjoyable for all guests. Making these choices will make it easier for your guests with food allergies to stay safe while enjoying a delicious feast at your wedding. That way, everyone can focus on enjoying the festivities instead of worrying about health or preparing for a potential health emergency. If you are unsure about the best allergy-free menu items, talk with your caterer about some ideas. And make sure that you are covered in the case of an unexpected emergency – for example, for a guest who doesn’t know that they have an allergy. Talk with your caterer about an emergency plan, including who will call for an ambulance and what medicines can be given to slow the onset of symptoms. You may not be able to have an Epipen on hand, but you can employ other antihistamines. This may seem like a lot to do for your wedding feast, but you’ll be happy you did it if you can avoid an emergency. You’ll be able to relax and enjoy your big day as you should. wm

MAKING YOUR WEDDING FOOD PART OF THE EVENT
Many weddings feature a sit-down meal of some type. Either the guests are served by a wait staff, or the guests are given the opportunity to serve themselves from a buffet. Either way, the common component is that guests are given prepared food and they sit down to eat it. Meals served in this way are more of a passive event. However, there are other options for your wedding, including hiring someone to cook the meal right on site, in front of the guests. “Our Cater Terra option (where I prepare every component of the meal outdoors and over a fire) allows me to showcase a unique rustic cooking style that is not only interactive and a wonderful showpiece for the appropriate wedding event, it also allows for us to truly serve food that is cooked before your very eyes,” says Regan Stachler of Patria Food in Raleigh. “Couples spend a lot of their budget on the food component; increasingly, they are looking for the

have a good time. That’s a successful wedding!”
Patria Food is one of a small group of caterers leading a trend in outdoor cooking and catering. These caterers not only prepare food on burning wood and in outdoor stoves, but they also emphasize locally sourced ingredients and those that are as close to nature as possible.
Regan says that they also try to create interesting displays while cooking, such as by using a custom iron cooking structure that can suspend meat and vegetables over an open flame.
“Guests remember good food. A memorable wedding is made up of many components, and good food is an important part of that,” Regan explains. “Guests want to attend a wedding to celebrate the couple, but let’s be honest, they also want to
“We view each wedding as a new opportunity to apply our versatility to suit the vision that the bride and groom have in mind,” Stachler shares. “There are many catering options available that allow me to showcase our outdoor cooking style and to allow not only interaction with and amongst guests, but also to make food a part of the wedding conversation.” wm

FROM RENAISSANCE TO RUSTIC When you are planning your wedding, you have much more options for theme than “garden wedding” or “traditional.” You can show off your personality and your own style with the theme you choose, which can be based on a time period or even an art style you like. You can go novelty and even choose a theme based on a favorite movie, type of music or book. vintage The vintage look has
become a classic. It’s stylish, sophisticated and savvy. Wear a wedding gown that has plenty of lace or that has a ¾ hemline. Men should wear double-breasted suit jackets and ascots. If you want to get really fancy, the ladies should wear gloves and the men top hats and tails. Use plenty of lace, ornamental gold frames and chairs, china, and garden flowers to decorate the ceremony and the reception. Think of how your grandmother decorated her sitting room or formal dining area and try to match that aesthetic. rustic Rustic weddings are very
popular right now. They can be held on local farms, in meadows, on a ranch or even at a local winery. With a rustic wedding, the key to the look is the setting. You can wear any type of gown you like, though the setting does give you the freedom to dress a little more casually if you choose. The décor should be in keeping with the setting. You should consider wildflowers or even greenery for your centerpieces and use natural décor like wooden signs, mason jar lanterns, twinkle lights, and communal seating. Consider a buffet-style meal and yard 266

games (if the venue allows them). Outdoor dining and dancing will make a rustic wedding even more special. renaissance Renaissance-inspired nuptials have been very popular in recent years as events like the Renaissance Fair have grown in popularity. You’ll need to study the historical details of the time to get the look just right, but the basic description of the gowns is that they have a dropped waist, a flowing skirt and sleeves that flare out dramatically from the elbows.
Choose long, communal tables for your reception, and serve the meal family style so that guests can serve themselves out of shared dishes. Use gold and pewter dinnerware and goblets, and serve plenty of roasted meat, vegetables, hearty bread and fruit. Hire a mandolin player to entertain everyone. twilight forest The Twilight Forest
theme will have you saying your I Do’s under a green canopy and twinkling lights just as the evening is starting to turn to night. You don’t have to be a fan of the movie to be inspired by this look. Anyone who loves romance and wants a natural look for their wedding will enjoy this theme.
You have freedom in your choice of gown and suit, as everything from casual to formal looks can go with this theme. The key is to create a beautiful altar under a canopy of greens, garland, and lights. The more elaborate you can be with the altar and the matching decorations, the more breathtaking the look will be. Use swags of chiffon, ribbon, and other fabric interwoven within the greenery. Serve your guests outside under the stars to make a big impact. If you’re worried about the weather or pests, have a tent set up and put out candles and other pest deterrents. Place candles and lanterns to light the way for guests, and hire a live band to play romantic melodies through the night. Some themes will make it easier for you to plan by giving you clear guidance on how to choose all the details. Other themes will give you more flexibility so that you can match them to your personal tastes. Of course, you don’t have to have a theme at all- you can always pick the colors you like and put all the details together yourself. These popular themes just give you some ideas to get started! wm

REBECCA &DREW When Rebecca was a young girl, she would stay in her family’s beach home at the Outer Banks each summer. She loved watching the magical weddings at the Sanderling and dreamed of walking down the aisle there, with her own beau. In June, she finally got to make that dream come true. Rebecca and Drew were married by the groom’s father under a geometric gold arbor accented with white flowers. Behind the altar, the Atlantic Ocean. The bride in a flowing white gown, and the groom casual yet sophisticated in a gray suit and white shirt. The décor continued with the geometric theme in tones of ivory and gold inside the Sanderling Pavilion. Lighting fixtures featured the same design as the altar, and the linens had geometric patterns that complemented them. Renee Landry Style created the fascinating centerpieces, which included thin, glass vases with greens and succulents. The cake designed by Great Cakes! was a naked design with an unfrosted exterior. The unconventional cake was decorated with succulents and limes for a natural look that perfectly embodied the Outer Banks. It was a truly magical evening that was the perfect start to this couple’s lifelong love story bringing one bride’s wedding dreams full circle. ASHLEY&CODY
Setups don’t often lead to a happy ending. When Cody and Ashley were set up by Ashley’s sister, it would be the start of their fairy tale. They began their courtship in Beaufort, and they made the city by the sea their forever home after spending a few blissful years of dating there. Cody proposed at their home in Beaufort on Christmas while family and friends looked on. When it came time to plan their nuptials, there was no question about where they would have the ceremony and reception: Beaufort. Cody and Ashley were married at the well-known Beaufort Historic Site. Cody prepared for the big day at home, but Ashley got ready at The Cedars Inn a couple of blocks from the wedding venue. Wedding guests passed the time sampling local olive oils, bread and cheeses provided by the Beaufort Olive Oil Company and The Catering Company of New Bern. Cody took a Porsche to the venue, and Ashley arrived on a doubledecker bus. After an intimate first look, the couple walked down the aisle in front of just two dozen of their closest family and friends. They exchanged vows in front of the old courthouse, which they decorated with a magnificent wreath and garlands of local Magnolia leaves. While guests were escorted to a cocktail hour, the bride and groom took a stroll down Front Street and had photos taken at many of their favorite 270

date night spots. The beautiful sunset provided a stunning backdrop for the photos. The reception featured comfort foods like prime rib, succulent stuffed chicken, lasagna, macaroni and cheese, a potato bar and a salad bar. Sugarloaf Island Bakery created the wedding cake and a selection of delicious sweet treats after the meal. Music was provided by Anything Music, and the couple’s son helped with the selections that reflected the couple to a tee! At the end of the night, Cody and Ashley had a brilliant sparkler send off. After staying at The Cedars Inn, the couple spent a week on Ocracoke Island for their honeymoon before beginning forever together.

BEST HONEYMOON EVER Your honeymoon is a chance to take the trip of a lifetime to celebrate your new marriage. Not only do you have the opportunity to get your new life together started with a bang, but you also have the chance to take a trip that you might not be able to take in the future. After all, people expect you to take a big trip for your honeymoon. It’s almost required. Why not go somewhere truly spectacular?
galapagos islands The Galapagos Islands are the only place in the world where you can see a number of animals and plants, such as the giant tortoise that takes its name from the islands, the many varieties of finch that live there, and the underwater “sea dragon.” The islands are actually part of a volcanic archipelago, and it will take some doing to get there. But once you are there, you can explore the UNESCO World Heritage site just like you were Charles Darwin when he was there formulating the theory of evolution. yellowstone national park You
don’t have to leave the country to see some truly amazing sites. When you look at the hot springs at Yellowstone Park, you’ll feel tempted to reach out and touch them to make sure they aren’t paintings. But don’t! The springs are actually boiling, acidic pools that will instantly melt anything that falls into them. Stay on the boardwalk and use your camera to look any closer. While you’re in the park, you can also see Old Faithful, tons of grizzly bears and a lot of beautiful natural scenery. Go hiking, learn about the local ecosystem, or
just cozy up in a cabin and enjoy a romantic night in front of the fire.
to get too chilly yourself. Just retreat inside the cabin when you need to warm up.
bora bora If you fancy a beautiful
beach somewhere for your wedding, why not go with the most picturesque beach? In Bora Bora, you can stay in a hut with a thatched roof right on the beach. Step onto your balcony, and you will be hovering above the water. You’ll also see crystal blue water as far as you can see. If you go swimming, you’ll find all kinds of rocks, reefs and tide pools to explore. You can also scuba dive or snorkel to get a closer look. When you’re tired of the water, go hiking in the nearby mountains or check out the local culture.
marrakesh What’s more romantic and exciting than pretending you are two star-crossed lovers and spies in Morocco? You’ll be quoting lines from Casablanca your whole stay. Head to Marrakesh to see snake charmers, belly dancers and all the oddities that the labyrinth of markets has to offer. You can all check out ancient and historical sites, shop for designer duds, or search for celebrities who like to vacation here. Make sure you try out some of the local cuisines while you’re there!
icelandic cruise Iceland doesn’t
While Paris and Italy might be lovely honeymoon destinations, there are many more options out there that can be just as romantic and thrilling. Why not try out one of these great honeymoon spots to have a more interesting and unusual story to share when you get back? You can always go to Paris for one of your anniversaries or Italy for a family vacation. wm
spring to mind when you think of honeymoons, but the usually icy country has a lot to offer for adventure seekers. Take a cruise and check out famous sites like the Negifoss and Godafoos waterfalls, the Blue Lagoon (yes, that Blue Lagoon), and Vigur Island, which is home to many puffins and black guillemots (rare species that will make bird watchers rejoice). Taking a cruise will let you be a part of the icy landscape without having

PLANNING FOR A COASTAL WEDDING A beach wedding can be beautiful and romantic. You can wear the picture perfect flowing dress and fresh flowers in your hair, while your groom walks barefoot up the aisle and wearing an outfit with rolled sleeves and cuffs. You can have your first kiss as a married couple against the backdrop of the ocean and a beautiful sunset. Does it get any better? Careful planning can help you avoid some of these disasters.
consider a private property
There are very few private beaches, and those that are available are associated with private properties. You can try to rope off an area of beach for your ceremony, but you will have no authority to keep people out. You may even get in trouble with the authorities for trying. So unless you want to deal with people hitting their volleyball into your altar or running through your aisles, it’s best to consider a private property for your ceremony. Many beach resorts are available that cater to couples getting married, and having your wedding at one allows you to schedule both your ceremony and reception in one location. Stick to having just your ceremony on the beach. Otherwise, you’ll be dealing with pests who are attracted to the food at the reception. Keep the meal at one of the dining areas inside the resort or another private property.
need a sound system so that guests can hear you over the wind and the crashing waves, but you won’t have any place to plug it in. You’ll have to bring a wireless system. You’ll also find walking down the aisle a bit hard in heels with all the sand. You can bury a wooden walkway under the sand to give you some stability without ruining the aesthetic you want. Wear your hair up to prevent tangles, and avoid a long veil that will just look like a sail in the wind. Create accessibility for those who have trouble walking or who can’t navigate the sand. Finally, you will need an ordinance or permit if you are hosting your own wedding on the beach, and you’ll need to have a backup plan in case of rain or heavy winds. Research the tide and the weather before you plan the timing for your ceremony. Have an “escape plan” for yourself and guests, as well as a backup ceremony area ready just in case of rain.
tend to logistics The beach may be
beautiful, but it also presents several logistical issues. You’ll definitely

treat guests A beach wedding
can make things a bit harder for
your guests, too. They will be hot, squinting against the sun, and managing all the sand. You can make it a little easier by setting up a refreshment stand near your ceremony and by giving out extras like hand fans, sunglasses, flip flops and sun block. Book your ceremony during the daytime to avoid the higher winds and tide. Talk with other brides who had coastal weddings for advice and the pros and cons. This invaluable information will help you learn from their mistakes. Get all of the specifics – from the months to avoid (April showers, July’s sweltering heat) to dodging the beaches busiest months. You can make planning a little easier by working with a wedding coordinator who specializes in beach weddings or by booking your event at a resort. The staff at the resort can handle all the logistics for you. Just plan your wedding off-season if possible since there will be fewer crowds and everything will be less expensive. wm

GETTING PERFECT WEDDING PHOTOS WHEN SHOOTING IN UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY
A destination wedding gives you the perfect opportunity to achieve a unique wedding. You will provide a wedding venue that your guests have never visited, and you can get breathtaking photographs that won’t be anything like those that your friends or other family members have. The downside to getting married in unfamiliar territory is that your photographer may not know the landscape and may face some challenges in getting those gorgeous shots that you want. “The key is to spend time with, and become invested in, the couple,” says Hooman Bahrani, of Vesic Photography, who has traveled extensively to photograph weddings in other states and countries. “Ride the back of a moped with them. Have a local dinner with them. Do something touristy with them. That helps me not only see the location as though I’m on my own vacation but also to introduce the couple into that landscape in a way that makes sense.”

Bahrani tells couples to create a private Pinterest board where they can share images of the location that they like. The photographer can also share images on the board to give the couple some ideas and inspiration. Then the couple and photographer can narrow down some locations in the vicinity of the venue to plan the photo session so that too much time is not wasted by travel. When the big day arrives, Bahrani suggests that couples ask the photographer to come to the location a few days early. “It will help the photographer adjust to a new time zone, give them time to get a feel for the local area and how it looks at the time of year you’re getting married, and also allow you to have more access to the photographer to get a more diverse photo collection,” he shares. “If possible, I try to schedule a day where the couple will be dressed in their wedding attire so we can have time to do extended photos in surrounding areas that otherwise wouldn’t be possible on the wedding day itself.” wm

THE LOVE BOAT One of the hottest trends for weddings right now is to get married on a boat. While your friends are getting married in front of a lake or a beach, you can get married on a riverboat, yacht or even a pontoon. You’ll create a memorable wedding, while tapping into your spirit of adventure! Since getting married on a water vessel is not like getting married anywhere else, there are a lot of things you need to keep in mind.
get a proper officiant A lot of
people believe that sea captains can officiate weddings. This isn’t true – well, at least not if you want your wedding to be legal. The only people who can legally officiate weddings are ordained ministers, judges and justices of the peace. You’ll need to find a legal officiant willing to come down to your boat, or you’ll have to get married at the courthouse earlier in the day before you have your big ceremony. consider performing the ceremony boatside Once your
boat has set sail, no one will be able to leave. That means people can’t leave early if they want to and they can’t leave if they are feeling tired or unwell. Once the boat sets sail, it also means that you’ll be leaving behind guests who are late – some of whom may be honored guests that you don’t want to leave behind. One way around both problems is to perform your ceremony on the dock or on the boat while the boat is stationary. Everyone can see the ceremony and then leave if they aren’t up for being on the water. This

also gives latecomers a chance to get there before the boat leaves. make sure you have enough space If you have your wedding on
a cruise ship, you aren’t going to have any problems accommodating all your guests. However, if you are getting married on a private vessel, you’ll want to make sure you have the right boat to accommodate everyone. A large yacht (about 40 meters long) can accommodate about 150 people. You may want to consider having your ceremony with multiple vessels and then having a reception on the shore. Riverboats can hold more people, but again, you may need several if you are having a lot of guests. Think through how guests will be able to interact with each other when choosing the type of boat, and consider having portions of your celebration on land if necessary. prepare for sea sickness Not
everyone can handle being on the water for a few hours at a time – and not everyone knows that they can’t.
It may come as a total surprise to them that they are sea sick. You need to prepare by having items on hand that can calm their sickness. Some examples include ginger biscuits, ginger tea, ginger beer and even small pieces of ginger for chewing. Also work with your chef to create a meal that will be easy to eat on the open water and easy on the stomach. Make sure your chef is experienced with planning for these types of weddings. have a back up plan Try to avoid
disaster by looking at the best times of year to avoid storms and other inclement weather. Then keep a close watch on the weather in the month, weeks and days leading up to your wedding. Getting married on the water can make for a beautiful ceremony if you plan everything right. These tips will help you create an unforgettable wedding that you and your guests will never forget! wm
