PUBLICATIONS 2014–2015

Foreword Royal Collection Trust’s line-up of new publications for 2014–15 encourages readers to look more deeply into some of the most beautiful paintings and works of art in the Royal Collection. Our major new study of the garden in art – Painting Paradise – will publish in March 2015. It examines in detail the responses of artists in the West and East to the concept of the garden over five centuries. Vermeer and the Art of the Everyday, by contrast, concentrates on the domestic world of the 17th-century Dutch interior – yet here again, details are used to throw a new light on these otherwise familiar and much-loved scenes. The Taste for Art opens out the subject of Scottish art, using this as a means of exploring artistic taste and royal patronage, while Gold encourages the reader to get eyeballto-eyeball with a royal tiger, and many other treasures made from this most precious of precious metals. We also have some significant new scholarly titles to announce. The first will cover the entire history of Windsor Castle, as archaeological site, royal residence and architectural icon, and will be the definitive study of this landmark building from the 10th century to the present day. We are also proud to be publishing three further titles in our list of catalogues raisonnés: Chinese and Japanese Works of Art, The Dutch Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen, and Arms and Armour, Volume I: European Armour, with further volumes to follow. And finally we have two new titles offering novel insights into two perennially fascinating subjects. Following on from the success of our multi-award-winning app Leonardo: Anatomy, our new Kings and Queens app will use interactive family trees, searchable factsheets, timelines and pinch and zoom graphics to answer every question you might ever have on the royal line of succession; while in Royal Shakespeare we announce a highly innovative study of the centuries-long relationship between the Bard and the Crown – from Elizabeth I to the present Queen.

Gardens are where man and nature meet. They change by the hour, from day to day and with the seasons. and the Art of the Everyday

The charm and fascination of Dutch genre paintings of the seventeenth century is the way that they capture everyday people doing everyday things. With their harmonious, light-filled interiors, these meticulously painted glimpses of lives behind closed doors provide us with an extraordinary insight into the manners, mentality and humanity of their subjects and the period. Drawing on the rich holdings of Dutch masterpieces from the Royal Collection and with works by artists including Jan Steen, Pieter de Hooch, Ter Borch, Gerrit Dou and, of course, Vermeer, this book analyses these jewel-like scenes and puts the paintings into their historical context, to unravel the hidden narratives, the morals and meanings in these vignettes of everyday life. is Surveyor of The Queen’s Pictures, Royal Collection Trust. The works in this book provide evidence of what, in 1843, the painter Sir David Wilkie called ‘The taste for art’ in Scottish culture. They highlight the influence and importance, both at home and abroad, of artists such as Allan Ramsay, who was born and trained in Edinburgh and became painter to the King, and later figures such as Sir Francis Grant, David Roberts, John Phillip, Alexander Nasmyth, Kenneth Macleay and James Giles.

Since 1914, the famous ‘Round Tower’ of Windsor Castle has been home to the Royal Archives – an extraordinary collection of many thousands of documents and records dating back to the Tudor period and beyond. Highlights from this fascinating and internationally significant collection are published here for the first time, as part of the celebrations to mark the centenary of the founding of the Royal Archives in a permanent home. The treasures illustrated here range from the account book of Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I), to the list of Jacobite prisoners taken at the Battle of Culloden; from President Lincoln commiserating with Queen Victoria on the death of Prince Albert to the testimony of a witness in the trial of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. There is a terrifyingly vivid first-hand description of the battle of Rorke’s Drift, and a gentlemanly skirmish between Winston Churchill and King George VI over who should be present on board ship at D-Day in 1944.

The First Georgians examines a hitherto little regarded period of British history: the reigns of George I (1714–27) and George II (1727–60). This was a period during which Britain was arguably the most advanced country in Europe, yet was undergoing a social and economic revolution that affected almost every facet of its political, intellectual and cultural life. This comprehensive study considers the artistic patronage of the first Hanoverian monarchs, as well as the works acquired by Queen Caroline and Frederick, Prince of Wales, many of which have never been illustrated or catalogued fully before.

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609–64) was perhaps the most innovative and technically accomplished Italian draughtsman of his time. Although skilled as a painter, it was his mastery as an etcher, his status as the inventor of the monotype, and above all his extraordinary oil sketches on paper that secured his critical acclaim. But even during his lifetime, his tempestuous private life disrupted his career, and though highly esteemed for a century after his death, he fell from fame altogether in the modern era. The Royal Library at Windsor Castle houses the largest extant group of drawings by Castiglione, including his magnificent oil studies. This publication showcases 90 of the finest of these works, and discusses them in the context of important new archival research on the artist’s turbulent career and reputation.

FO RT H COM I N G

Published in two volumes, this study of the Royal Collection’s European arms and armour will provide the first catalogue of this substantial and important collection of historic weapons for more than a hundred years. Highlights of Volume I include the famous set of armour made for Henry VIII around 1540, and the exceptionally beautiful armour made for Henry, Prince of Wales around 1608. Volume II focuses on the edged weapons in the collection, including both pieces that had a practical purpose and those which were acquired by either gift or purchase. The late A .V. B . N O R M A N was a renowned historian of arms and armour, ending his career as Master of the Royal Armouries. His work on the Royal Collection catalogue remained unfinished at the time of his death and has been completed by Ian Eaves, a former Keeper of Armour at the Royal Armouries, Tower of London.

The Royal Collection includes some of the most historic examples of eastern arts now in the western world. With more than 2,000 items distributed among the royal residences in England and Scotland, this collection presents a rich cross-section of the porcelains, jades, lacquer and other works of art produced in China and Japan and brought here over a period of several centuries, reflecting the West’s long-standing appetite for rarities from distant lands. A striking feature of the collection is the mounting in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries of many objects in gilt bronze: the mounts themselves, made in French and British workshops, are often of superb quality and of great historical importance and will be published here for the first time. is a specialist in Asian ceramics, having published more than 20 books on the subject. This is a completely updated and revised edition of Christopher White’s catalogue of the Dutch paintings in the Royal Collection (first published in 1982 by CUP), with all the illustrations reproduced in colour and fully integrated with the text. Since the publication of the 1982 edition many of the works have been cleaned and many, including Rembrandts, have been re-attributed. Scholarship in this area has advanced dramatically in the same period, and the catalogue will include much new information as well as a fascinating account of the assembling of this important group of Dutch pictures, particularly by George IV, and the history of their display and appreciation.

The Northern Renaissance Dürer to Holbein K AT E H E A R D A N D L U C Y W H I TA K E R

‘Stunning reproductions . . . a brilliant overview’ K.E. Staab, Choice

The Northern Renaissance in Europe was a period of rapid social and religious change. This is reflected in the art of the period, which is further characterised by a fascinating range of subject matter, superb technical skill and an interest in capturing likeness with almost psychological precision. The same period also saw a great rise in the importance of works on paper, especially prints. The Northern Renaissance: Dürer to Holbein examines works by the greatest masters of this period alongside opulently illuminated manuscripts and early printed books.
