importance to Great Britain for nearly 1,000 years. In this new popular history of the castle, architectural historian and broadcaster Jonathan Foyle explains how a Norman motteand-bailey castle established by William the Conqueror around 1070 survived and evolved through the Middle Ages, the English Civil War, the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, two World Wars and the disastrous fire of 1992, to remain the premier royal residence of Her Majesty The Queen to this day. Beautifully illustrated with paintings, drawings and historical photographs from the Royal Collection, this accessible book also includes newly commissioned photography of the castle as it appears today, as well as 3D reconstructions at important moments in its history, revealing how this extraordinary building has developed.

today as one of the most important art patrons in seventeenthcentury Italy. He commissioned and assembled more than 7,000 watercolours, drawings and prints in his famous ‘Paper Museum’.
Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588–1657), now considered one of the most important Italian art patrons of the seventeenth century, commissioned a number of exquisite studies of birds as part of his famous ‘Paper Museum’. The lawyer and natural historian Giovanni Pietro Olina used these drawings, which are now kept in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, as the basis for the plates in his treatise, the Uccelliera. Pasta for Nightingales combines Cassiano’s original artwork with extracts from the first English translation of Olina’s text. It includes such enchanting insights as the notion that robins were epileptic, or suffered from dizziness, and that the hoopoe over-indulged in grapes until it became ‘dazed and half-drunk’. It also includes much fascinating early natural history and ornithological observation – as well as the secret recipe for pasta to keep your nightingale happy
