Publications 2016–2017

Foreword

Our new titles for 2016–17 are a celebration of some of the best-loved works in the Royal Collection and include a number of significant publishing ‘firsts’. Beginning in May 2017, we will publish Canaletto and the Art of Venice, a major study and a lavishly illustrated exploration of the wealth of eighteenth-century Venetian art in the Collection – the first time this selection of works have been brought together and looked at as a whole. Just as notable, in the year of the 70th anniversary of Indian independence, we will publish the first of two new titles celebrating the art and artistry of the Indian subcontinent. Splendours of the Subcontinent offers a history of the luxurious and exquisite objects presented to Edward vii as Prince of Wales on his tour of India in 1875. None of these items have been published before and here they are presented with specially commissioned full-colour photography and accompanied by much new research.

In another first, Shadows of War: Roger Fenton’s Photographs of the Crimean War, 1855 brings together all 350 of Fenton’s works held in the Royal Collection – the most important holding of his work in existence. And in December 2017 we will publish Charles ii: Art & Power – a significant new study of the art, culture and court ceremonial under Charles ii and James ii, from 1660 to 1688, with particular emphasis on the spectacular furnishings of Whitehall Palace and St James’s Palace.

Canaletto and the Art of Venice Lucy Whitaker and Rosie Razzall The Royal Collection has one of the largest and finest collections of Venetian art from the first half of the eighteenth century. It includes paintings, prints and drawings by Canaletto himself, as well as those of his contemporaries, such as Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, Antonio Visentini, Francesco Zuccarelli and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. These artists were patronised by Consul Smith and their works were later purchased by George iii. This lavishly illustrated catalogue marks the first time that the rich holdings of eighteenth-century Venetian art in the Royal Collection will have been brought together, and focuses on presenting these extraordinary works against the background of the social and artistic networks of the period. Whilst displaying and analysing the brilliant works of Canaletto himself, including his cityscapes, capriccios and paintings of architecture, this catalogue also discusses the intimate interior of Venetian life, explores the links between artists and the theatre in Venice at this time and looks at Venice as a centre for printmaking and book production.

Portrait of the Artist Anna Reynolds, Lucy Peter and Martin Clayton The first publication to focus on images of artists from within the Royal Collection, Portrait of the Artist not only showcases self-portraits of world-renowned artists from Rembrandt to Hockney, but also features images of artists by their friends and pupils, including the most reliable surviving likeness of Leonardo da Vinci by his student Francesco Melzi. It examines a range of themes played out within these works, from the cult of the artist to the symbolism evoked through images of the artist’s studio, and looks at the role of the monarch in commissioning, collecting and displaying portraits. Also explored is the changing status of the artist and the ways in which this is portrayed both in the works themselves and in the relationship between artist and patron. This sumptuously illustrated book contains a fascinating array of paintings, works on paper, photographs and decorative arts by a wide range of artists including Rubens, Gentileschi, Dürer, Reynolds and Freud.

SPLENDOURS OF THE SUBCONTINENT A PRINCE'S TOUR OF INDIA 1875–6

Splendours of the Subcontinent A Prince’s Tour of India, 1875–6 Caroline de Guitaut and Kajal Meghani In October 1875 Edward vii, then Prince of Wales, set off on a four-month tour of the Indian subcontinent, to what is now India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal. During the tour he was presented with a wide array of beautiful gifts. Despite requests from the India Office that the hosts should exercise restraint, the resulting gifts were intricately wrought from precious metals and often jewelled. Not only did each one of them forge a personal link between the Prince and the donor, but as a collection they proved very influential in Europe. This fascinating publication presents the reader with a wideranging selection of South Asian works of art, and not only tells the story of the future king’s tour, but also the history of these intriguing objects.

The follow-up to the bestseller A Royal Cookbook: Seasonal recipes from Buckingham Palace

Royal Teas Seasonal recipes from Buckingham Palace Mark Flanagan There is no more quintessentially British tradition than afternoon tea, and nowhere is that tradition taken more seriously than at Buckingham Palace, where 30,000 afternoon teas are served every year at the summer Garden Parties. Inspired by this British institution, and following on from the success of A Royal Cookbook, Mark Flanagan, the Royal Chef, shares here his favourite tea-time treats. Recipes and clear instruction will guide you through making pastries and savouries, biscuits and show-stopping cakes, from a springtime picnic to a festive Christmas tea, all with the royal touch. This elegant recipe book also tells the story of the local and seasonal ingredients used by Mark Flanagan, such as the deliciously syrupy jam made from the mulberry trees of Buckingham Palace gardens, and the bee hives that keep the Royal Household in honey all year round.

‘The ordinary made extraordinary.’ Rachel CampbellJohnston, The Times

Masters of the Everyday Dutch Artists in the Age of Vermeer Desmond Shawe-Taylor and Quentin Buvelot Dutch artists of the seventeenth century were unparalleled in their dedication to depicting ordinary people carrying out everyday tasks. Genre painting was the pre-eminent expression of this devotion, offering candid glimpses into the peasant cottages, rich interiors and tranquil courtyards of the Dutch Golden Age. Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, Gerrit Dou, Gabriel Metsu and Pieter de Hooch are among the masters whose works are explored and illustrated here. While the subject matter may be ordinary – the preparation of food, the bustle of a busy market, the enjoyment of taverns and town festivities – the meticulously documented details often allude to a work’s deeper meaning or to moral messages that would have been familiar to the contemporary viewer. This book explores these hidden moral messages and visual puns, moving beyond the paintings’ surface beauties to reveal their true significance in the culture of the time and in their creators’ lives.

‘Perhaps the most thought-provoking show in this year’s Edinburgh Art Festival.’ Daily Telegraph

Scottish Artists 1750–1900 From Caledonia to the Continent Deborah Clarke and Vanessa Remington Monarchs from George iii onward have collected works by Scottish artists – paintings and drawings that now form a distinct group within the Royal Collection, and provide a fascinating way to explore developments in both British artistic styles and royal patronage. The works in this book provide evidence of what, in 1843, the painter Sir David Wilkie called ‘The taste for art’ in Scottish culture, and highlight the influence and importance, both internationally and at home, of artists such as Allan Ramsay, who was born and trained in Edinburgh and become painter to George iii, and later figures such as Sir Francis Grant, David Roberts, John Phillip, Alexander Nasmyth and James Giles.

‘Every page of this book is a history lesson. If you are an admirer of Merian’s work, this book provides you the opportunity to study her paintings up close… If this is your first introduction to Merian and her contributions to entomology and natural history art, this book is sure to turn you into a fan of this fearless and passionate naturalist.’ Art Planet Today

Maria Merian’s Butterflies Kate Heard with contributions by Dr George McGann In 1699, the German artist and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian set sail for Suriname, in South America. There she would spend two years studying the animals and plants that she encountered, aiming to explore the life-cycle of insects (then only partially understood). Those studies led to the publication of the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname), a luxury volume which brought the wonders of Suriname to Europe. Maria Merian’s Butterflies tells Merian’s story through her works in the Royal Collection. Many are luxury versions of the plates of the Metamorphosis, partially printed and partially hand painted onto vellum by the artist herself. More than 300 years after they were made, these meticulous, brilliant works celebrate a woman whose art and story are enduringly popular.

High Spirits brings together nearly one hundred comic works by Rowlandson, with subjects spanning the entire range of English society. Chinese and Japanese Works of Art In the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen John Ayers The Royal Collection includes some of the most historically important examples of eastern arts now in the western world. This publication presents a rich cross-section of the porcelains, jades, lacquers and other works of art produced in China and Japan and brought here over a period of several centuries, reflecting the West’s long-standing appetite for rarities from distant lands. Castiglione Lost Genius Timothy J. Standring and Martin Clayton A ground-breaking reassessment, the first in more than 20 years, of Castiglione’s life and works. Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609–64) was perhaps the most innovative and technically accomplished Italian draughtsman of his time. Although skilled as a painter, it was his mastery as an etcher, his status as the inventor of the monotype, and above all his extraordinary oil sketches on paper that secured his critical acclaim. This publication showcases 90 of the finest of the works housed in the Royal Library, and discusses them in the context of important new archival research on the artist’s turbulent career and reputation.

Sophie Gordon Introduction by John McCarthy with contributions from Badr El Hage and Alessandro Nasini In 1862 the leading British photographer Francis Bedford was commissioned by Queen Victoria to accompany her son and heir, the future King Edward vii, on an ambitious journey around the Middle East. The Royal Portrait

The Northern Renaissance

Image and Impact

Dürer to Holbein

Jennifer Scott

Kate Heard and Lucy Whitaker

This book examines the role portraiture has played in promoting the public and private face of monarchs from Richard ii to Queen Elizabeth ii. Bringing together works by artists from Holbein to Freud, it investigates the role the royal portrait has played in fashion and politics across 600 years of official and unofficial image-making.

The Northern Renaissance in Europe was a period of rapid social and religious change. This is reflected in the art of the period, which is further characterised by a fascinating range of subject matter, superb technical skill and an interest in capturing likeness with almost psychological precision. The same period also saw a great rise in the importance of works on paper, especially prints. The Northern Renaissance: Dürer to Holbein examines works by the greatest masters of this period alongside opulently illuminated manuscripts and early printed books.
