Publications 2015–2016
Foreword Our new titles for 2015–16 commemorate a unique royal milestone, a unique female botanist, the unique status of the artist in the western world over the last 500 years, and the 500th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. We also celebrate some of the bestloved works of Dutch seventeenth-century art and some of the most delicious recipes created in the royal kitchens. Maria Sibylla Merian's engravings of the insects of Suriname, created between 1699 and 1701, are landmarks in the study of natural history. The Royal Library is home to a remarkable set of these engravings, coloured by Merian herself, and used to create a fascinating and charming book, Maria Merian’s Butterflies, which will have the same appeal as the best-selling Mr Marshal’s Flower Book.
Masterpieces from the Royal Collection of paintings are celebrated in two further new titles: Masters of the Everyday: Dutch Artists in the Age of Vermeer, which reveals a previously unknown painting by Jan Steen among other treasures; while Portrait of the Artist examines the artist’s image of him- or indeed herself, both as social documents and as a means of exploring the changing status of those portrayed. The Royal Collection and Royal Archives together contain a unique record of the tastes of Britain’s kings and queens. One of the most long-standing of these, from the days of Elizabeth i to those of Queen Elizabeth ii, has been for the works of Shakespeare. Royal Shakespeare brings this history to light in fascinating detail for the very first time.
Contents We mark the moment when The Queen becomes the longest-reigning monarch in British history with another in our everpopular series of souvenir albums, and follow up on our Royal Cookbook with a suitably inspiring collection of tea-time recipes for all seasons. Our publishing programme strives to reflect the depth, the richness and the variety of the Royal Collection itself. As always, we hope you will enjoy.

Maria Merian’s Butterflies Kat e H e a r d
‘I had the plates engraved by the most renowned masters, and used the best paper in order to please both the connoisseurs of art and the amateur naturalists interested in insects and plants.’ Maria Sibylla Merian In 1699, the German artist and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian set sail for Suriname, in South America. There she would spend two years studying the animals and plants which she encountered, aiming to explore the life-cycle

of insects (then only partially understood). Those studies led to the publication of the Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Suriname), a luxury volume which brought the wonders of Suriname to Europe. Maria Merian’s Butterflies tells Merian’s story through her works in the Royal Collection, acquired by George iii. Many are luxury versions of the plates of the Metamorphosis, partially printed and partially hand painted onto vellum by the artist herself. Over 300 years after they were made, these meticulous, brilliant works celebrate a woman whose art and whose story are enduringly popular.

Dutch Artists in the Age of Vermeer D e s m o n d s h aw e -tay l o r & quentin buvelot
Dutch artists of the seventeenth century were unparalleled in their dedication to depicting ordinary people doing everyday things. Genre painting was the pre-eminent expression of this dedication, offering candid glimpses into the peasant cottages, rich interiors and tranquil courtyards of the Dutch Golden Age. Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, Gerrit Dou, Gabriel Metsu and Pieter de Hooch are among the masters whose works are explored and illustrated here. While the subject matter may be ordinary — the preparation of food, the bustle of a busy market, the enjoyment of taverns and town festivities — the meticulously documented

details often allude to a work’s deeper meaning or to moral messages that would have been familiar to the contemporary viewer. This book explores these hidden moral messages and visual puns, moving beyond the paintings’ surface beauties to reveal their true significance in the culture of the time and in their creators’ lives. Desmond Shawe-Taylor is Surveyor of The Queen’s Pictures, Royal Collection Trust. His previous publications include Dutch Landscapes (2010) and most recently The First Georgians: Art & Monarchy 1714–1760 (2014). Quentin Buvelot is Senior Curator at the Mauritshuis.

The first publication to focus on images of artists from within the Royal Collection, Portrait of the Artist not only showcases self-portraits of world-renowned artists from Rembrandt to Hockney, but also features images of artists by their friends, relatives and pupils, including the most reliable surviving likeness of Leonardo da Vinci by his student, Francesco Melzi. It examines a range of themes played out within these works, from the cult of the artist to the symbolism evoked through images of the artist’s studio, and looks at the role of the monarch in commissioning, collecting and displaying portraits. Also explored is the changing status of the artist and how this is portrayed both in the physical works and in the relationship between artist and patron.

A children’s story written and illustrated by Queen Victoria Introduction by jacqueline wilson
An enchanting children’s story written by a real princess; with illustrations created from Queen Victoria’s own hand-coloured paper dolls. Queen Victoria wrote this charming story about the adventures of Alice Laselles at Miss Duncombe’s school for girls, and the mystery of who put the cat in Miss Duncombe’s kitchen, when she was just 10 ¾. This tiny gem, in its little red notebook, is now kept safe in the Royal Archives. It is published here for the very first time, and is illustrated with characters created from Victoria’s own collection
of paper dolls, drawn for her by her governess, then delicately coloured in by Victoria herself. A delightful and unique children’s story, it will enchant and captivate every little princess today. Queen Victoria (1819–1901) grew up at Kensington Palace an only child. Not only a keen writer, Victoria was also an enthusiastic artist, and created this story as an exercise in English ‘Composition’.
‘The giddy pace is part of the charm, offering a fascinating glimpse into Queen Victoria’s ten-year-old mind.’ Emily Bearn, Mail On Sunday ‘Such is the surpassing delicacy of its illustration and the prettiness of its binding — not to mention the ambitious elegance of its prose — that it is likely to interest even those readers who know little of Victoria or her era.’ Meghan Cox Gordon, Wall Street Journal ‘Revealing the vivid imagination of a little girl who dreamed about life beyond the palace walls.’ Anita Singh, The Daily Telegraph

‘There are, of course, two sides to the art of caricatures – the caricaturist and the subjects of his work. The latter, of which I am one, certainly need a sense of humour in order to enjoy a caricature of themselves. They need to be masochists to collect cartoons about themselves.’ From the Foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh Portly squires and young dandies, Jane Austenesque heroines and their gruesome chaperones, dashing young officers and corrupt politicians. The anatomical drawings and notes on the L workings of the bones and muscles, made by Leonardo da Vinci during his campaign of human dissection in the winter of 1510–11, fill the pages of a manuscript, now held in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. The Mechanics of Man reproduces this manuscript in full and, for the first time in print, translates all of Leonardo’s notes ‘on the page’, so that the reader may readily follow his thoughts as they unfold.

The Northern Renaissance Dürer to Holbein KAT E H E A R D & LU C Y W H I TA K E R
‘Stunning reproductions … a brilliant overview.’ K.E. Staab, Choice
The Northern Renaissance in Europe was a period of rapid social and religious change. This is reflected in the art of the period, which is further characterised by a fascinating range of subject matter, superb technical skill and an interest in capturing likeness with almost psychological precision. The same period also saw a great rise in the importance of works on paper, especially prints. The Northern Renaissance: Dürer to Holbein examines works by the greatest masters of this period alongside opulently illuminated manuscripts and early printed books.
