Drawing was Leonardo da Vinci’s primary artistic activity. He used drawing to think, to explore the world around him and to develop his other artistic projects. His drawings are among the most diverse and technically accomplished in the history of Western art, and the Royal Collection holds by far the most important selection of these. To mark the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death in 2019, a series of special exhibitions of his drawings will open simultaneously at 12 venues across the United Kingdom: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton and Sunderland. This publication includes all 200 of the drawings shown across these venues and provides an authoritative account of Leonardo’s works within the Royal Collection.

Detailed study of Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings in the Royal Collection – the finest group in existence – reveals much about his materials and techniques and his innovative approach to drawing. This ground-breaking book explores a substantial number of Leonardo’s most celebrated drawings in unprecedented detail. Using specialist microscopic photography this publication will open up a new understanding and appreciation of Leonardo’s techniques and present new information on his materials, uncovering features invisible to the naked eye. In addition, infrared images bring to light the artist’s first touches (including Leonardo’s own thumbprint) and under-drawings, many of which have not been seen for 500 years.

The anatomical drawings and notes on the workings of the bones and muscles made by Leonardo da Vinci during his campaign of human dissection in the winter of 1510–11 fill the pages of a manuscript now held in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. This manuscript reveals Leonardo to be one of the greatest anatomists in history, through his combination of manual skill in dissection, analytical skill in understanding the structures he uncovered and artistic skill in recording his results. The award-winning The Mechanics of Man reproduces this manuscript in full and, for the first time in print, translates all of Leonardo’s notes ‘on the page’, so that the reader may readily follow his thoughts as they unfold.

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest anatomists ever to have lived. He dissected more than 30 human corpses in order to explore every aspect of anatomy and physiology. His findings are recorded here in drawings of unparalleled beauty and lucidity. This book presents 87 of the finest of these documents – the largest showing of Leonardo’s anatomical studies there has ever been – with a full discussion of their anatomical content and their significance in Leonardo’s pioneering work. It is an essential work of reference for the Leonardo enthusiast as well as a unique exploration of the anatomy of the human body itself.

Leonardo da Vinci’s studies of physiognomy – the divinely beautiful and the grotesquely ugly – are some of the most idiosyncratic and fascinating works ever produced by this archetypal genius. This book looks in detail at 80 examples of these drawings from the unrivalled collection preserved in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, and is the first work on the subject aimed at the general reader.

In the first publication to examine the relationship between Britain and Russia through the lens of art in the Royal Collection, Russia: Art, Royalty and the Romanovs interweaves the familial, political, diplomatic and artistic stories of the two countries and their royal families over more than 400 years. From initial contacts in the mid-sixteenth century, through alliances, marriages and two World Wars, to the current reign, this richly illustrated book gives readers a glimpse into the public and personal dealings of these two fascinating dynasties. With new research on previously unpublished works, including porcelain, arms, costume, insignia and photographs, together with paintings by both Russian artists and British artists working in Russia, this is the first time that the uniquely interlinked narrative of the art connecting the two royal families has been presented in a full-scale publication. In March 1855 Roger Fenton, a former solicitor and founding member of what is now known as the Royal Photographic Society, travelled to war-torn Crimea to capture the brutality of war through the medium of photography. The Royal Collection has the most important holding of his work in the world, with some 350 of his photographs of the Crimean conflict. This publication brings together all these works and highlights the impact that such images had on those back in Britain, who saw in them the realities of war documented in pictures for the first time. Royal Collection Trust curator Sophie Gordon also includes new and fascinating research into the commissioning of the images and the interplay between photography and paintings during the mid-nineteenth century.

George IV was arguably the most magnificent of British monarchs. Visual display played an important role in his public image, an image that he worked hard to control. Through the spectacular interiors of his houses and palaces in London and Brighton, numerous flattering portraits, carefully choreographed state occasions and his fashion choices, George IV attempted to shape public perception of his person as heir to the throne and as king. In so doing he formed an unrivalled collection of art, much of which remains in the Royal Collection. This monograph, published to accompany the major Royal Collection Trust exhibition, examines George IV the man through the works he collected.

George IV is well known as a collector of decorative arts and paintings, but his status as an avid print collector is less well studied. Throughout his life he was an active participant in the commissioning and production of works, attempting to manipulate the print market and its products to his own end. The London print market was the most important and dynamic in the world at this date, and George IV was one of its most important clients. This book reconstructs George IV’s print collection and the circumstances of its formation, from his first purchases as Prince of Wales in 1783 to his death in 1830. From depictions of renowned beauties to scenes of daily life in China, the subjects of the prints collected by George IV provide a means of understanding his interests and concerns. Based on new research, readers are offered a fresh understanding of George IV and the contemporary print market. Examining the reigns of Charles II (1600–85) and James II (1685–8), this sumptuously illustrated book focuses on the art and culture of the Restoration court. From the development of an ‘English baroque’ to the use of court ritual and decorative art objects, the authors explore the themes of power and passion during the reigns of these Restoration monarchs. This beautiful publication not only showcases the replacement Crown Jewels, made for the coronation of Charles II in 1661, but also includes Charles II’s collection of Italian Old Master paintings, drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and the spectacular furnishings of the palaces of Whitehall and St James’s.

St James’s Palace is by far the least known of the royal residences, despite having been the principal seat of the British monarchy between 1698 and 1837. In this book, the first modern history of the palace, the authors shed precious light on a remarkable building. The publication takes a chronological approach, exploring the palace’s role as the home to the heir to the throne before 1714; its impact on the development of London and the West End during the late Stuart period; and how St James’s accidentally became the principal residence of the British monarchy after the palace of Whitehall burnt down in 1698. The disposition of the Royal Collection at St James’s is chronicled as the book moves with the twists and turns of the fortunes of the palace through the Victorian, Edwardian and Elizabethan periods, taking the story up to the present day.

Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, has been a site of fundamental historical, cultural and architectural importance for nearly 1,000 years. This new popular history of the castle explains how a Norman motte-and-bailey castle established by William the Conqueror around 1070 survived and evolved through the Middle Ages, the English Civil War, the Restoration of the monarchy, two World Wars and the disastrous fire of 1992, to remain the premier royal residence of Her Majesty The Queen to this day. Beautifully illustrated with spectacular paintings, drawings and photographs from the Royal Collection, this book also includes newly commissioned photography of the castle as it appears today, as well as reconstructions of the castle at important moments in its history, revealing how this extraordinary building has developed over the centuries.

This authoritative history of the castle, the first to be published in a hundred years, draws upon new research and primary sources to present a general account of Windsor Castle and its immediate environs from around ad 700 to the present day, setting this iconic building against the background of wider social, political and cultural events in the life of the monarchy and the nation. Not only is the book richly illustrated with historical drawings, watercolours and photographs from the Royal Collection and elsewhere, it also includes newly commissioned photography and reconstructions of the castle at key points in its development, showing how this historic site has changed and evolved over the past nine centuries.

The arts were an important shared enthusiasm of Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, throughout their marriage. Of particular personal significance for them were the hundreds of watercolours they commissioned to form a pictorial record of their public and private lives together, and that they arranged in a series of volumes, called by Victoria the ‘View Albums’. In celebration of the bicentenary of the births of both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, this publication will accompany a touring exhibition of a group of outstanding works on paper, some of which have never before been published or publicly exhibited, that illuminate aspects of both Victoria’s reign and the royal couple’s passions. Themes of the watercolours range from events in the lives of the royal family; the spectacle and pageantry of the court; travel at home and abroad; scenes relating to the Crimean War; the industrialisation of the Victorian age and the couple’s private life.

In October 1875, Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, set off on a four-month tour of the Indian subcontinent. During his travels the Prince was presented with a wide array of beautiful gifts ranging from brooches to swords and from military figures to an articulated golden fish. Each item was intricately wrought, often in precious metals with jewel-encrusted details. Not only did the presentation of these pieces forge a personal link between the Prince and the gift-giver, but as a collection, these exquisite objects proved to be highly influential on European taste and design. This fascinating publication presents the reader with a miscellany of South Asian works of art, through which the author tells the story of the Prince’s journey and the history of these intriguing objects.

Canaletto (1697–1768) is Venice’s most famous view painter. His drawings and paintings record cityscapes that are familiar and loved throughout the world, none more so than his works recording his native Venice. His lively yet elegant paintings, drawings and etchings were enthusiastically collected by foreign patrons, among them Joseph Smith, the British consul to Venice, who later sold his collection to George III. As a result, the Royal Collection now includes the largest and finest collection of Canaletto’s works in existence. Canaletto and the Art of Venice is the first publication to showcase in full the rich collection of eighteenth-century Venetian art held by the Royal Collection. It explores and discusses paintings, drawings and prints by Canaletto, as well as works by many of his contemporaries, including Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, Antonio Visentini, Francesco Zuccarelli and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta.

Dutch artists of the seventeenth century were unparalleled in their dedication to depicting ordinary people doing everyday things. These paintings offer candid glimpses into the peasant cottages, rich interiors and tranquil courtyards of the Dutch Golden Age. This book explores these jewel-like scenes, and places the paintings in their historical context.
