GEORGE IV Art & Spectacle Edited by Kate Heard and Kathryn Jones
Published November 2019 Hardback 290 × 230 mm 304 pages 300 colour illustrations ISBN 978 1 909741 60 7 £49.95
George IV was arguably the most magnificent of British monarchs. Visual display played an important role in his public image, an image that he worked hard to control. Through the spectacular interiors of his houses and palaces in London and Brighton, numerous flattering portraits, carefully choreographed state occasions and his fashion choices, George IV attempted to shape public perception of his person as heir to the throne and as king. In so doing he formed an unrivalled collection of art, much of which remains in the Royal Collection. This monograph, published to mark the 200th anniversary of George IV’s accession in 2020, examines the man behind the crown through the works he collected.
Kate Heard is Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings, Royal Collection Trust. Her previous publications include The First Georgians: Art & Monarchy 1714–1760, Maria Merian’s Butterflies and High Spirits: The Comic Art of Thomas Rowlandson. Kathryn Jones is Senior Curator of Decorative Arts, Royal Collection Trust. Her previous publications include The First Georgians: Art & Monarchy 1714–1760, European Silver in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen and For The Royal Table: Dining at the Palace.

‘SPECTACLE AND RIDICULE’ George IV and the Market for Prints Kate Heard
George IV is well known as a collector of decorative arts and paintings, but his print collection is less well studied. Throughout his life he was an active participant in the commissioning and production of works, attempting to manipulate the print market and its products to his own end. This book reconstructs George’s print collection and the circumstances of its formation, from his first purchases in 1783 as Prince of Wales to his death in 1830. From depictions of renowned beauties to scenes of daily life in China, the subjects of the prints collected by George IV provide a means of understanding his interests and concerns. Based on new research, readers are offered a fresh understanding of George IV and the contemporary print market.

ST JAMES’S PALACE From Leper Hospital to Royal Court Simon Thurley, Rufus Bird and Michael Turner
Spring 2021 Hardback 300 × 245 mm 308 pages, including 3 gatefolds 300 colour illustrations ISBN 978 1 909741 59 1 £75.00
In this first modern history of St James’s Palace, the authors shed new light on a remarkable building that, despite serving as the official residence of the British monarchy from 1698 to 1837, is by far the least known of the royal residences. The publication explores the role of the palace as home to the heir to the throne before 1714, its impact on the development of London and the West End during the late Stuart period and how, following the fire at the palace of Whitehall, St James’s became the principal seat of the British monarchy in 1698. The book goes on to follow the fortunes of the palace through the Victorian, Edwardian and Elizabethan periods up to the present day. Simon Thurley is a historian of royal palaces and the Tudor and Stuart courts. His publications include Houses of Power: The Places that Shaped the Tudor World and The Building of England. Rufus Bird is Surveyor of The Queen’s Works of Art, Royal Collection Trust. He was co-editor of Charles II: Art & Power and a contributing author to The First Georgians: Art & Monarchy 1714–1760. Michael Turner is a former Inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas for Historic England. He was a contributing author to Windsor Castle: A Thousand Years of a Royal Palace.

THE PALACE OF HOLYROODHOUSE ‘A house of many memories’ Deborah Clarke, Richard Fawcett, Sally Goodsir and Ailsa Hutton
Autumn 2021 Hardback 300 × 245 mm 304 pages 300 colour illustrations ISBN 978 1 909741 74 4 £45.00
This first official history of the Palace of Holyroodhouse traces the history of the building from its origins as a twelfth-century abbey, founded by David I of Scotland, to its role today as Her Majesty The Queen’s official residence in Scotland. The early history of the site covers uncharted territory as well as shedding light on well-known stories such as the infamous court murder in the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. James IV’s lost Renaissance palace is reimagined using newly commissioned archaeological plans, and reconstruction drawings of the palace at various stages in its development are used to illustrate the function and social history of the building and the surrounding landscape. The unlikely residence of Jacobites, a Russian princess and even a few lions, the palace later served as a family home to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on their way to Balmoral and is now used by The Queen each summer to host garden parties and investitures. Deborah Clarke is Senior Curator, Palace of Holyroodhouse, Royal Collection Trust. Richard Fawcett is Emeritus Professor, Art History, University of St Andrews. Sally Goodsir is Curator of Decorative Arts, Royal Collection Trust. Ailsa Hutton is Collections Assistant, Paisley Museum & Art Gallery.

QUEEN VICTORIA’S BUCKINGHAM PALACE Amanda Foreman and Lucy Peter
Since the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, Buckingham Palace has been the private London home of the royal family and the headquarters of the British monarchy. Subsequent generations have made their mark, but the Palace remains, in purpose and in essence, the creation of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Victoria was a modern and enlightened monarch and introduced a number of innovations to the Palace, from the construction of the iconic East Front and elegant Ballroom to the new facilities of electricity and the telephone. This book traces the transformation of Buckingham Palace from a relatively minor royal residence into a grand stage for state occasions, a symbol of the British monarchy and a national monument.
