Foreign Language Fest By Hope Tone

On November 26, the Maine South Foreign Language department hosted their first Foreign Language Festival. All of the languages where represented, as well as the exchange students from Karlsruhe, Germany. Languages had arts and crafts, music, games, and treats all native to their regions of study. The foreign language fest was held in the glass hallway to make it easier for all Maine South students to participate. This festival was not only meant to help greet the German students who had just recently arrived, but also to encourage students to take foreign languages. While some students just stopped by for a quick snack before their after school activities, there were many students genuinely interested in learning about these foreign cultures. If students visited a booth and completed the activities, they would receive a stamp in their passports. If you received all six stamps, you were entered in a raffle hosted by the Foreign Language department. French club featured crepes, cheeses, nutella, bonbons, live French music, mimes, and posters and books on the French culture.

Holiday Traditions Around the World Chinese Winter Holiday Traditions Reaching Staff Though Christmas is not traditionally celebrated in China, recently Christians and non-Christians alike have begun incorporating traditional Chinese customs into the Westernholiday to create a lively, vibrant festival. Celebrants often light their homes withdelicate paper lanterns and decorate "Trees of Light" with paper chains and flowers. Children hang muslin stockings and await a visit from Dun Che Lao Ren, the ChineseSanta Claus whose name literally means "Christmas Old Man." As the majority of the Chinese people are not Christian, the primary winter holiday isthe Chinese New Year, officially known as the "Spring Festival." Celebrated in late January or early February, the Chinese New Year spans generations. Children feast on luxurious dumplings and sweets, enjoy vivid firecracker displays, and receive gifts such as clothing, toys, and money enclosed in lucky red envelopes. Elders and ancestors also play a crucial role in the New Year celebrations and appear in portraits and paintings hung centrally in the home. This year, preparations are already underway for the Chinese New Year, set to fall on February 3,2011. Weihnanchten Patrick Wohl In Germany, Christmas is not only celebrated on December 25th, but for the entire month of December. Many families set aside a special day for making their own decorations, gifts, as well as delicious holiday treats. On the night of December 5th, children lay their shoes outside their bedroom doors for St. Nicholas Day. If they have been good they will receive gifts, while bad children may receive a rod. Advent wreaths made of holly are used as centerpieces on family tables and candles are added. Many families also countdown the days till Christmas with an advent calendar like in the United States. Parents (or grandparents) decorate the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve and keep it hidden until after dinner.

must search for a pickle that is hidden deep within In many families, after the tree is revealed the children the tree. The first person to find it gets an extra gift from St. Nicholas or the chance to unwrap the first present. A typical German feast varies regionally but generally consists of suckling pig, roast goose, or carp, as well as brussel sprouts, cabbage, roast potatoes, a salad, sausages, and marzipan. Noel Christmas in France is a joyous celebration filled delicious food, crafts, and presents. On Christmas Eve, children leave their shoes by the fireplace in hopes that Pere Noel, or Father Christmas, will fill them with sweets and small toys. The majority of French homes display a beautiful Nativity scene, or creche, filled with clay figures called santons. Santons are made by hand in markets across France and are sometimes made by children themselves. Unlike Americans, the French do not usually display a Christmas tree. Instead, French families bake succulent cakes shaped like a log called Buche de Noel, or yule log. But the cake is only one of many delicious treats that French feast on during their "reveillon", a feast usually held after midnight mass. Le reveillon often consists of goose, turkey, oysters, foie gras,or lobster, as well as various salads, cake, fruit, and many other delicious holiday treats. On the epiphany (January 6th), a "king cake" is made. Inside the cake lays a bean and the person who gets the piece with the bean becomes king for a day. The holidays can mean a lot (or a little) and resemble multiple different things to different people. Whether it’s scattering glitter in your front yard so the reindeers will be sure to find your house, a time to worship, or just the one time a year your aunt makes the potatoes that you just love–the holidays all have their own personal meaning. But what about outside the United States, if the holidays vary from house to house they’re doomed to differ country to country, so instead of leaving you with a question unanswered we bring the answer to you–a quick glance of what Christmas means to some other countries around the world.

Holiday Traditions Around the World. Spain Madeline Vogg Merry Christmas: Feliz Navidad Special Food: Pavo Trufado de Navidad (Christmas Turkey with Truffles) Atmosphere: Incredible “Nacimiento”nativity scenes-Christmas trees, and Christmas markets are scattered amongst villages and cities, and as the Christmas Eve stars first start to show, tiny oil lamps are lit, warming windows and towns with their soft glow. Once midnight, Christmas Eve comes along, ringing of bells calls families to “La Misa Del Gallo,” the Mass of the Rooster, where beautiful candlelight services are held. Christmas day: Christmas dinner is not eaten until after midnight, and the party carries on into the morning where the day is spent at church. Interesting: Swings are set up in which it is old tradition to “swing” for the sun, urging for it to go higher in the sky. Santa Clause: Instead of receiving gifts on the 25th, people receive them on January 6th, or Epiphany, where the Three Wise Men pass through on there way to Bethlehem and fill the children’s shoes

in which the kids leave out for them with gifts. There are also parades and celebration through out the day filled with sweets. Milk and Cookies: Nope! Instead the kids leave their shoes filled with straw, in exchange for gifts. Italy Merry Christmas: Buon Natale Special Food: Panettone and Zucchine in Agrodolce (Sweet and Sour Zucchini) Atmosphere: Grand Nativity scenes too are found throughout Italy, and on Christmas Eve the most beautiful cribs are set up in churches, where people then go from church to church looking at the created scenes and cribs, to find the best one. Christmas Eve has a typically meatless dinner then is followed by going to a midnight mass. Bonfires are usually lit in the center of town as well. Santa Clause: “Babbo Natale” Does bring children presents on Christmas day, but Epiphany is celebrated in Italy as well, where the Three Wise Men fill the kids shoes with gifts if they have been good, and coal if they have been bad. Christmas trees: Nope! While they are becoming more common now, the cribs are the true trademark.

German Students Visit America: A Cultural Experience By: Erica and Elizabeth Hauer On October 22, forty-one German students arrived in Chicago, and had the opportunity to live with an American family for two weeks. During this time, the students had the opportunity to experience an American high school, the foreign language fest, the Hancock Tower, an architectural tour of downtown, and various Halloween activities such as the corn maze, fright fest, or a haunted house. This experience was eye-opening for the German students, as well as the American students. After reflecting on their experience, two exchange students, Katrin and Alexander were kind enough to answer some questions about their trip toAmerica. What was the best part of your trip to America and why? Katrin: That's very difficult to say, I think the best was the experience to get to know a completely new culture, how people far away from Europe live... Alexander: I liked most the skyline because there is nothing comparable in Germany. What did you think of our school? How is it the same and different from your school? Katrin: The school was great! It was really like I knew them from American movies. It was so interesting to be one day in school, nearly everything is different in Germany. I have the feeling that our school is a bit stricter but for example the music during the breaks was very cool! I think in America you are proud to be in the school you are and you can really feel the "school spirit", in Germany we don't know something like that. Alexander: I think it is very relaxed in your school because in my school we don't eat and drink in our lessons. How do you think an American teen and a German teen differ? Katrin: I don't know... I think the life of an American teenager is most of the time only around school, a German teenager does his hobbies more out of school, and not only with school mates. What was your favorite food that you ate? Alexander: I liked the turkey the most I ate in your house. What did you think of the foreign language fest? Katrin: Oh I really liked it! I could see how everyone represented his language with so much passion and the ideas with the food and the other things to each country were brilliant! What was your favorite place that you visited? Why? Alexander: It was the Hancock Tower because it was fantastic to eat there.

Les Aventures d’Indiana Jones Augusta Paulik. French 3 Acc.

Indiana a décidé d’y aller.

«On cherche.

JOSEPHINE BAKER Nora Elderkin French 1

Josephie Baker was a famous dancer and entertainer at Les Folies Bergere. She was an African‐American, born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1906. Her family was very poor, so she took to dancing on street corners. Josephine toured the United States with the Jones Family Band and The Dixie Steppers in 1919, performing various comical skits. She ended up dancing in New York during the Harlem Renaissance. In the early 20s, Josephine moved to dance in the show La Revue Negre, a turning point in her career. She became a very prominent dancer, particularly at Les Folies Bergere, throughout the 20s and 30s. She became very well‐ known for her banana skirt (and nothing else!) dance in the show. La Folie du Jour. Josephine rivaled Gloria Swanson and Mary Pickford, as the most photographed woman in the world and by 1927 she warned more than any entertainer in Europe. She starred in two movies in the early 1930s, Zou‐Zou and Princess Tam‐Tam, and moved her family from St. Louis to Les Milandes, her estate in CasteInaud‐Fayrac, France. During World War II, Josephine acted as a French spy against the Nazis. In the 50s and 60s, she came back to American in an attempt to fight racism. The NAACP named May 20th Josephine Baker Day in honor of her efforts. She died on April 12th, 1975, of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was the first American woman ever to be buried in France with military honors. REACHING DECEMBER 2010 8

Also es macht Spass und man lernt was dabei.

Natale Con Mia Nonna Isabella Fioretto. Italian 2

Vengono i miei cugini e mangiamo insieme.

Empezó a llover. Estaba feliz. Quizás algún día lo creería…
