Literacy empowers children to succeed in school and in life, and you are making a meaningful difference for thousands of students through your commitment to education, equity, and service. I am so honored to have been recently named national board chair of Reading Partners and I want to sincerely thank Susan Hayes for her leadership during the year she served as interim board chair. I also want to express great appreciation from the entire board to Jessica Vibberts for stepping in as interim CEO of Reading Partners beginning in the spring of 2016. In addition to gracefully leading the organization, Jessica joined our national board in conducting a rigorous, nationwide search for Reading Partners’ next CEO.

PASSION FOR READING
William Harrison, a sergeant with the Washington, DC Fire Department, grew up not too
far from Wheatley Education Campus where he spent three to four hours a week during the 2015-16 school year as a reading tutor. Mr. Harrison learned about Reading Partners through the Empowering Males of Color (EMOC) initiative, launched in 2015 by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and former Chancellor of DC Public Schools Kaya Henderson. Sgt. Harrison is the proud father of two adult children. Eager to continue having an impact on youth in his community, Sgt. Harrison became a tutor with Reading Partners through EMOC. He was drawn to the opportunity because he believes in the importance of mentoring and serving as a positive role model, particularly for young men of color.
“It’s important for me to come back and help some of the young people in this neighborhood as much as I can, and being involved in Reading Partners and tutoring with students is a great way for me to give back and invest in this community that gave me so much.” — Sgt. Every week, Sgt. Harrison worked one-on-one with his student, Zyree, who entered Reading Partners several months behind grade level in reading. As a result of his partnership with Sgt. Harrison and a lot of hard work, Zyree received the individualized support he needed to improve his reading skills to become a more confident and fluent reader. As Sgt. Harrison describes, “If you can’t read, it’s hard to understand math, science – you have to be able to read directions, you have to be able to read to understand math problems. Reading is the building block, the foundation for all other subjects.” Taylor Hicks, the AmeriCorps site coordinator at Wheatley, described the special bond between Sgt. Harrison and Zyree as inspiring and calming, a trusting relationship that helped ignite a light and a desire for greatness in Zyree. As with so many other Reading Partners students, Zyree’s growth throughout the 2015-16 school year can be traced in large part to a tutoring relationship that afforded him the opportunity to make and learn from his mistakes while experiencing unwavering support in his pursuit of excellence in reading.

In her second year of service, Krystal is serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA focusing on building a pipeline of partners to support diversity recruitment of AmeriCorps members at Reading Partners. Krystal will also have an opportunity to develop a Reading Partners AmeriCorps and VISTA alumni platform that will allow former members to engage with Reading Partners after their service year (or two!) is complete. Since 2010, more than 600 Reading Partners AmeriCorps members like Krystal have supported 10,000 students with tutoring, coordinated the activities of 208 Reading Centers, and engaged with 13,000 community volunteers to improve student literacy rates. In other words, AmeriCorps members are absolutely essential for our ability to reach more volunteers and students and to improve educational opportunity and outcomes in the communities we serve. Reading Partners would like to thank and acknowledge the following AmeriCorps State and National Commissions for their partnership: the Corporation for National and Community Service— National Direct, the OneStar Foundation (Texas), CaliforniaVolunteers, New York Volunteers, Serve DC, United Way Association of South Carolina, and the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism (Maryland).

In addition, preliminary results suggest a positive and statistically significant impact on Reading Partners students’ literacy skills, based on assessments administered by teachers. Final study findings will be released in summer 2017.
GOLD STANDARD RESEARCH
Independent, gold-standard research finalized in 2015 by MDRC demonstrated, through a randomized control trial, that Reading Partners has a positive and statistically significant impact on reading comprehension, sight-word reading, and reading fluency. The study also found our program is effective for a wide variety of students and that for every dollar invested in Reading Partners, our program model delivers more than two dollars in literacy resources to students.

WHAT WORKS CLEARINGHOUSE
The MDRC evaluation, having met the criteria for being credible and reliable evidence of the effectiveness of Reading Partners’ intervention, has been accepted into the U.S. Department of Education’s What Works Clearinghouse that seeks to identify high-quality education research in order to provide educators with credible and reliable evidence they can use to make informed decisions.
RESEARCHING VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCES AND IMPACT
Reading Partners began a new two-year research partnership with Child Trends, a leading national nonprofit research organization focused on improving the lives and prospects of children, youth, and their families. This project will build upon findings from our MDRC and APA studies, including deeper exploration of the characteristics and experiences of Reading Partners’ volunteer tutors, and a first look at social-emotional learning outcomes for our students.

While we have expanded our reach and impact over the years, we know there are still far too many young students who are not receiving the extra support they need to become strong readers. With that reality in mind, we are testing innovations that will enable us to reach exponentially more students. In 2015-16, we launched Literacy Impact Forged Together 10 (LIFT10), which will gauge Reading Partners’ ability to affect a ten percentage point increase in fourth-grade reading proficiency in a district. Starting in Tulsa, OK, and Washington, DC, LIFT10 seeks to partner more deliberately with schools and districts, as well as with other organizations, to serve and impact significantly more students, while also testing innovative program approaches and mobilizing strong community partnerships. We are enhancing our services by piloting initiatives to help stem summer learning loss, supplementing volunteer tutors with trained AmeriCorps member-tutors, providing additional individualized support and more high-quality tutoring sessions to our highest-need students, and licensing our curriculum to vetted outside organizations.
