E D I T O R ’ S

L E T T E R

After 16 years of having the honor and pleasure of creating this magazine every month, and 26 years of self employment, I wanted to express thanks and tell my story.

Success is ALL about relationships. It’s about having friends and BEING a friend! I have been blessed by the most loyal and kind business partners who I now call friends. I have survived self-employment for the past 26 years in this (sometimes) brutal business through determination, hard work, thinking constantly about what’s next, listening to ideas from others, and being able to quickly make changes or additions overnight! The magazine evolves with the market and our readers.

What goes around comes around. I can’t TELL you how many times I have seen people get uncomfortably ‘canned’ from a job only to reappear as your next boss.

Practice the Golden Rule.

2001: Nancy working in home office with her 2 year old son - he’s about to be 20!

I have been asked at events if I was the magazine photographer. Yes I am! I often don’t reveal that I am also the graphic designer, the pre-press department, the writer, the collections department - I wear all the hats that the owner of a small business wears. I am not big on being braggy, but I think I have a great story about how friends

can change the course of your life. A million years ago (well, really 1990-ish) I was in the title business (I know!). A friend at David Weekley Homes knew they were looking for a creative person for the DFW marketing department. That friend referred me. I was tested to see if I was a match - and I was a perfect match! I had NO experience doing any of the work they needed. Now, if you wanted someone to make a flower arrangement or paint a T-shirt design by hand, I was your girl! But graphic design on their level? No experience. I was told they could teach me the skills needed, but being creative was God given. David Weekley Homes took a chance on me. They trained me and they were the BEST! I blissfully worked as a creative member of Weekley’s DFW marketing department for 3 years before they decided to outsource several jobs. I was heartbroken because I KNEW I had finally found my groove! I stayed as long as they needed for a smooth transition, and, at the end, they gave my number out to team members as a contact for creative marketing materials.

My FRIENDS at David Weekley Homes LAUNCHED ME into BUSINESS! As they left Weekley for other home builders, they took me with them, and I got my foot in the door with new customers.

For 10 years, I created marketing materials geared towards Realtors before I decided there had to be a better way to reach them. I was loading their mailboxes with PILES of loose flyers about new communities, bonuses, and available homes. While still creating flyers, I spent a year doing research on the best and most affordable way to

reach DFW Realtors. Then, I started this magazine. When it first started, it was more like a bunch of websites in print - believe it or not, lots of home builders didn’t have websites 16 years ago. The magazine was not about fun photos when it started. It was data driven. It showed who built where, price and square footage range.

2003 magazines!

2003: OUR FIRST ADVERTISERS! About the photos... I volunteered to be the WCR Dallas newsletter editor. I started taking photos at monthly luncheons. Since I had the photos already, I thought I’d fill blank Drees Homes spots in the magazine with those WCR photos. When the magazine hit the streets, the reacEmerald Homes tions were reminiscent of when yearbooks were distributed in high school and people were Grand Homes filled with excitement that their picture made it in THE yearbook! A Pavlov’s response Highland Homes was created! With that kind of positive feedback, I wanted to put MORE photos in - and Lantana Community there you have it - today’s magazine full of photos of real estate friends was born! Mercedes Homes Morrison Home There is NO other magazine like it. With no higher ups to report to, no big corporation behind us controlling decisions, or levels of management approval required to make Standard Pacific Homes changes, we can quickly (often times overnight) evolve into what our readers need and want.

TO-DATE: OUR LONGEST RUNNING ADVERTISERS Anderson Hanson Blanton - 2004 K Hovnanian - 2010 RE/MAX of Texas - 2009 Shaddock Homes - 2007 Toll Brothers - 2003 OUR TOUGHEST YEAR 2008 {shocking, I know!}

We care. We want our Realtors, advertisers and valued friends to succeed, so we listen to what you want and need.

Having spent 30 years in marketing, I know the ROI questions, like how can we PROVE people are reading it? When readers started taking the magazine with them on vacations all over the world, having fun with the magazine at happy hours and FUNdraisers, dragging it to the beach, dams, mountains, golf courses, historical sites, under water, weddings, and more - it helped counter that argument about whether or not people read it. Not only are they reading it, they want to participate in it!

SO MUCH of our content is reader submitted, so it’s by definition what they want to see! We can’t possibly fit in ALL the photos submitted. But we do our best to include as many different groups as we can - no matter if they are top producers or just starting out - we make room for everyone. We are proud that we are all inclusive and we are rewarded with a huge following of fans from all members of the ‘village’ that it takes to market, build, sell, insure, celebrate, and fund new construction in DFW.

The magazine celebrates its SWEET 16th this year! We have BIG plans to celebrate! For starters, find a picture of YOU at 16 because we are going to want it for the FuN we have planned all year long! Look for an exciting collaboration with Candy Evans

(CandysDirt Blog) with us hosting events so we, and our loyal advertisers, can mingle with our real estate friends, and we are going to embrace videos and podcasts, so get your lip gloss ready because we are going to hit you up to talk about what you know about real estate! Nancy at 16! Rocking that Dorothy Do!

For 16 years, we have focused on getting to know our real estate friends on a personal level - we strive to learn something about them you wouldn’t know from their flashy marketing pieces. Feature stories we’ve done over the years become even more treasured as real estate friends pass away.

With your continued support, we will remain the place real estate professionals go to for the latest DFW news on new construction, new communities, peers changing companies, title and mortgage lender news, trends ‑ and, of course, all of those FuN photos capturing behind-the-scenes moments out and about with your Real Estate Friends! Thank you for your support!
