Can Outdoor Furniture Outlast Winter? Q: My brother purchased new outdoor furniture for his deck this summer, some nice cedar chairs and end tables. But I'm astounded that he hasn't yet taken in or covered his new furniture yet. Even though we haven't had snow yet, the temperature change alone must be taking its toll. Should I warn him about leaving his expensive furniture outside in winter? - Carey in Chicopee, Mass. A: I think warning him is a bit strong, particularly in this case. Cedar furniture designed for outdoor use can be very resilient in most weather, something the dealer may have told your brother when he purchased the set. You can bring it up as part of a conversation about the furniture by asking if it's all-weather, and letting your brother tell you all about it. Considering how much quality cedar furniture costs, he's likely pretty proud of his purchase. Cedar outdoor furniture is desirable to many people. It's a durable wood, doesn't easily warp or rot, and resists insects. Unfinished cedar furniture starts out as a natural reddish color, which over time fades to gray as wind and weather season the wood. Owners who prefer the warmer reddish color can apply a wood sealer, or enhance the color using a wood stain. Paint or finishing oils aren't typically used with cedar furniture, since they can trap moisture, encouraging rot. Your brother can clean his furniture a few times a year with soap and water, and should avoid using a pressure washer or harsh solvents. If he's concerned about temperature extremes or ice and snow building up on the furniture, he can cover it or store it during the winter. Otherwise, don't worry about warning him about his outdoor furniture care choices. It's his property, after all, and he can leave the cedar furniture out if he wishes. HOME TIP: Clean mildew from unfinished wood furniture using a very mild bleach and water solution; rinse well, and make sure the wood dries completely. 10

Ideas On Restoring Secondhand Furniture Men and women furnish their homes and apartments in various ways. For some, home furnishings are an extension of their personalities, while others prioritize budget over style when furnishing their domiciles. Secondhand furniture has long been used to furnish homes and apartments. While young people working with tight budgets and living in their first apartments might be the most likely to rely on secondhand furniture, such items are not exclusive to recent college graduates and young professionals. Homeowners with a love of antiques or those who simply can't resist thrift store bargains also are likely to lean on secondhand furniture. Used furnishings range from expensive high-end antiques to bargain bin chairs and couches found in thrift stores or purchased online. Pricey antiques often come fully restored, but that still leaves legions of shoppers who need to bring their secondhand furnishings back to life. The following are a few ways to do just that. * Embrace your inner Picasso. A fresh coat of paint can go a long way toward stylizing secondhand furniture. Items that have been through a lot before making it to your home may benefit from some sanding before receiving a fresh coat of paint. Once items have been sanded, smoothed and cleaned, apply some primer before dusting off your paintbrush. Primer makes it easier for the fresh coat of paint to bond to the furniture, making it less likely that the new coat will chip or crack in the months to come. After applying primer, the painting can commence. Two to three coats should be sufficient to give the item a fresh new look. Allow the item to dry for several hours before showing it off and putting it to good use. 12

* Upgrade old upholstery. Old chairs and couches tend to have ample wear and tear. But such items are still useful as long as their bones are still sturdy, even if cushions have flattened out and fabric is suffering from tears or stains. Reupholstering old furniture can turn inexpensive but worn down older items into seemingly brand new pieces at a fraction of the cost of new furniture. According to Better Homes and Gardens magazine, the following supplies are necessary to successfully reupholster furniture: - needle-nose pliers - camera or notepaper and pencil - marking pen - scissors - staple gun and staples, 3/8” or 5/16” - 1/2” batting - upholstery fabric (chairs typically require 5 yards) - straight pins - 5/32” welt cord - sewing machine - upholstery-weight thread - tack strips - fabric glue, optional - upholstery tacks or nailhead trim, optional - black breathable fabric for the underside of furniture

Reupholstering furniture can be a tedious process, and one novices might want to leave to the professionals. The

February 2014

Heather Walker 307-660-1294

cost of reupholstering secondhand furniture bought at a garage sale, thrift store or private seller online is likely still less expensive than buying a new piece, so you might still make out in the long run. If reupholstering proves too expensive but the furniture still has ample and comfortable cushioning, consider employing a slip cover to hide stained or torn upholstery. Slip covers are typically inexpensive, and they can be purchased in various colors. * Wash away years of wear and tear. Restoring secondhand furniture can sometimes be as easy as washing away years of wear and tear. Old chests of drawers, dressers or armoires might just need a good scrubbing to look as good as new. Before cleaning older furniture, remove the old wax with a stripper bought at a hardware store. Old coats of wax can prevent cleaners from reaching the surface of the furniture, so they must be removed for cleaning products to be effective. When cleaning old furniture, it's a good idea to solicit advice from antique dealers, who can help you avoid damaging the piece even further. A small amount of dishwashing liquid mixed with warm water can be used to gently clean old wax off of furniture. When applying such a mixture, be careful to avoid soaking the item or letting the mixture pool on its surface. Work slowly, gradually cleaning small areas one by one and wiping them down with a damp cloth to ensure wax and other residue has vanished completely. Once the item has been thoroughly cleaned and been given ample time to dry, you can apply a new coat of wax. Older furniture can be both practical and chic, and there are many ways to bring such items back to life without breaking the bank. ∑

While a night in is always a great way to save some money, couples can still spend a night away from home without straining the wallet. The following are a few ways cost-conscious couples can save some money this Valentine’s Day. • Avoid Prix Fixe Many restaurants offer prix fixe menus on Valentine’s Day. These menus reduce the amount of options at a couples’ disposal, and couples might be forced to pay for several courses when they

o n M e e y v on a S e ’ n s i D t n e l ay! a V

stretches your budget. It should be easy to book a reservation a night before or after the holiday, and doing so allows you to choose a restaurant that’s more aligned with your budget. • Shop Ahead of Time It’s customary to exchange gifts with your significant other on Valentine’s Day, but it might be difficult to find a good deal on a gift if you wait until the last minute. Rather than procrastinating, shop for a gift

• Consider a Picnic A day or night away from home doesn’t have to be spent at an expensive restaurant or on a romantic getaway. If the weather allows, consider a picnic in the park. Cook up your valentine’s favorite meal and bring along a bottle of wine and then enjoy some time together under the warm sun at a fraction of the cost of a more traditional Valentine’s Day date.

~ Valentine’s Day can be a joyous time for couples, but it can also be expensive. A bouquet of roses and some new jewelry capped off with a night out on the town adds up, and many men and women find themselves looking for ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day without breaking the bank. ~ would prefer just an entree. If cost is a concern, pick a restaurant that offers a full menu instead of prix fixe. This allows you to avoid potentially costly appetizers and desserts while still affording you the opportunity to share a night out together.

• Avoid Going Out on Valentine’s Day Another way to save money is to go out a day or so before or after Valentine’s Day instead of on the holiday itself. Many restaurants are fully booked for dinner on Valentine’s Day, so you might be forced to choose a restaurant that 14

well in advance of the holiday. Because of the proximity of Valentine’s Day to the holiday season, you might be able to find a gift when shopping for the holidays. The holiday shopping season is known for its great deals, so look for something you can save until mid-February. If you go this route, just make sure the gift you buy will still be eligible to be returned or exchanged if need be. Even if you wait until after the holiday season to find a gift for your valentine, the earlier you start shopping the more time you have to comparison shop and hunt for a deal.

February 2014

• Forgo Roses for a Rose Bush Roses are a staple of Valentine’s Day, but they can also bust a budget. Instead of an expensive bouquet, tell your loved one you will plant him or her a rose bush instead once the weather warms up. This frees up some money in the short term, and once the rose bush blooms this will prove one Valentine’s gift that keeps on giving. Valentine’s Day is a beloved tradition for many couples, but it doesn’t have to stretch your budget. ∑

Jennifer Pollard was diagnosed by 2 eye doctors that she had macular degeneration and severe glaucoma, in January of 2011. She was told she would probably be legally blind within 3 years. Jennifer asked for prayer and chose to believe and receive healing from God. On January 8, 2014, Jennifer went back for an eye exam. She called the Healing Room Ministry to testify to her healing: “The eye doctor found no trace of any glaucoma or macular degeneration.” When she mentioned the diagnosis she had been given 3 years prior, the doctor had no explanation. Her doctor declared, “It looks like a miracle to me.” We are praising God with Jennifer. God heals today!

Never Without a Witness…

A witness’ testimony is necessary for us to be aware of things we were unable to see ourselves. As children, we usually take the word of others concerning such matters. Is there any other way? Older, wiser adults have always been necessary to inform new arrivals on earth of the important things. And sometimes, we reject or accept what we're told based on our own experience (or lack thereof); or because we believe we know better than our parents. On the other hand, some teachings we should reject, if our own experience leads us to doubt the source because how reliable can the witness be of someone who wasn’t there? What about the anti-God agenda in America today? Our children are not just taught evolution as fact - a philosophy that isn’t based in science or fact, but inference and opinion - but there are those in our country that demand the absence of God from public life. To be fair, such mandates usually come from “higher” government, and neglect to consider the beliefs of a given community - a good argument against America’s increasing bureaucratization. Yet the vast majority of Americans have some affiliation with God; be it through personal relationship, church, community or tradition. Why would the government seek to underplay an aspect of American culture that is arguably its backbone? What drives this insanity? During wartime, our presidents certainly do not neglect God in their national addresses; why then is it okay to say a prayer in front of the nation publicly, but not allow the people of the nation to pray in public? So, through close examination of the mandates government has handed down to communities, we see a specific instance of an increasing problem in America’s soul. Education isn’t the only front of this war on God. Popular culture makes it stylish not to believe in God; to pretend He doesn't exist.

Humanism is the teacher of the message: “I'm captain of my own ship,” and “if it feels good, do it”. It’s an attitude popular in many movies and TV shows and it certainly bears witness that those creating them have their confidence in something other than God and His love for mankind through His son Jesus. God has never left Himself without a witness. According to the Bible: “Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.” God has always left His thumbprint in His work; whether it's in the creation around us, or something within ourselves many refer to as a “God-shaped hole". The “Godshaped hole” is the dissatisfaction and emptiness everyone experiences during those honest moments alone; regardless of how self-made and successful we may or may not tell ourselves we are. Personal success won’t fill that hole. Read the book of Ecclesiastes for an account of the wealthiest, most successful man ever to walk the planet

Winter 2014 Schedule

and how unfulfilling his success actually was. Today, successful people without God are no more successful or less empty inside than Ecclesiastes’ author Solomon. When sunsets and the natural beauty of God's creation tug at the Godshaped hole He left inside you when you were created, ask God for help in understanding Him and how to receive His love in your life. He's there, He has a plan, and all we need to do is find out about it and receive His goodness. It's not meant to be difficult or make us suffer. The suffering has already happened; our part is to receive the benefit of that plan which has been in place since Jesus came to set things right in a fallen world. Open your Bible and read the witness God left for Himself. If you are an American citizen today, you may have already heard many arguments against God - some from unexpected sources. Although most Americans believe in Christ, our country has corruption at high levels that distorts the truth and denies God and His power in the public arena. But God can explain Himself just fine, through His word. And He is a reliable witness - He will be found by those who seek Him. Unlike some in our government and its agenda, He does not disappoint. ∑

Trends Among Mom Food Shoppers Comparison shopping is a way of life for many consumers. In an effort to save a few dollars here and there, shoppers take many routes to get a deal, including utilizing some digital help. A recent report shows women, and mothers in particular, are increasingly turning to social media and store websites as a means to making food shopping decisions. According to the report "Moms as Food Shoppers: Grocery Store and Supercenter Patterns and Trends," which was produced by Packaged Facts from data compiled by the Experian Simmons National Consumer Study, mothers are 43% more likely to go online to gather coupons and 38% more likely than other shoppers to look at store websites. Mothers also are using social media and store websites to plan their grocery store trips. They will scope out which stores are offering particular sales and plan shopping routes accordingly. With so many people relying on smartphones for myriad reasons, comparison shopping between stores and checking sales and coupons are a few other reasons women are turning to their phones. The number of apps that are geared

Shopper, and Grocery Gadget, have grown increasingly popular over the years. Some of these apps are integrated with major retailers and can use GPS positioning to match shoppers up with a nearby store. Some websites even make it easier for shoppers to prepare their favorite recipes. Certain recipe sites enable consumers to create a shopping list with a click of the mouse so that all of the necessary ingredients can quickly be added to a shopping list. In addition to identifying that website food browsing is an important component of the shopping process for many moms, the Experian study narrowed down some other preferences. • Organic foods: Thirty-one percent of moms now desire organic/natural foods, but not necessarily locally grown foods. • Convenience foods are still popular. Mothers are more inclined than others to use convenience foods, such as frozen waffles, pancakes, and complete packaged dinner mixes. Snacks and desserts are also bought and consumed in high volumes in family households. • Store brands: Moms are interested in value and will purchase store brands to save money.

The Internet and social media has changed the way people shop and is also affecting how many women purchase foods for their families. ∑

In a saucepan, combine raspberries, 2 tablespoons sugar, cornstarch, and water. Bring to boil, and continue boiling 5 minutes, or until sauce is thick. Strain sauce through a mesh strainer to remove seeds. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). In a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, melt white chocolate chips with half-and-half, stirring occasionally until smooth. In a large bowl, mix together cream cheese and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time. Blend in vanilla and melted white chocolate. Pour half of batter over crust. Spoon 3 tablespoons raspberry sauce over batter. Pour remaining cheesecake batter into pan, and again spoon 3 tablespoons raspberry sauce over the top. Swirl batter with the tip of a knife to create a marbled effect. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until filling is set. Cool, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 8 hours before removing from pan. Serve with remaining raspberry sauce. 18

Valentine’s Day Facts and Superstitions Every February 14th people around the world exchange gifts, chocolates and romantic greetings for a day set aside for lovers. Many traditions are followed, all in the name of St. Valentine. Still, people may not understand why such customs are upheld. Much of the history of Valentine’s Day and St. Valentine himself is shrouded in mystery, and much of what’s widely accepted is inaccurate. To set the record straight, here are some facts about the holiday. • Valentine’s Day is believed to have originated from a celebration in Rome during the fifth century. This celebration paid tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic priest. Other historians surmise it was a way to “Christianize” the pagan holiday of Lupercalia, which was a fertility festival. Included in the traditions were boys and girls drawing names from a box and exchanging gifts.

• The Catholic Church acknowledges at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus. • All of the stories surrounding St. Valentine - whether they are disputed or not - paint him as a sympathetic and heroic individual. • Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular from the Middle Ages onward, though they have been usually verbal in nature. • The oldest known written valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. • Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia. • Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are

the most popular holidays to give flowers. • According to Hallmark, women purchase 85 percent of all valentines. • According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. • Candy was among the earliest Valentine’s Day gifts and remains a popular gift today. • Some tales suggest that the type of bird a girl watches on Valentine’s Day predicts her future husband. A bluebird indicates a happy man, while a sparrow indicates a poor man. • In Medieval times, girls consumed unusual foods on Valentine’s Day in the belief it would make them dream of their future husbands.

"The World Atlas of Wine" by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson (Mitchell Beazley, $55) Reviewed by Larry Cox In 1971, when the first edition of "The World of Wine" was published, it received international acclaim. During the past three decades, it has been translated into 15 languages and has sold more than 4.5 million copies worldwide. This, the 7th edition, has been completely revised and updated. For example, changes in climate, in winemaking techniques and even where wine is produced all are reflected in this printing. Hugh Johnson, an award-winning author and recipient of the Order of the British Empire for his services to winemaking and horticulture,

his two great passions, and Jancis Robinson, one of the most respected wine critics on the planet, have combined their talents to produce an accessible, highly readable overview of the world of wine. In addition to the crisply written text, there are more than 215 unique and specially created maps. Dynamic wine regions such as coastal Croatia, Khaketi in Georgia, Canterbury in New Zealand, Swartland in South Africa, northern Virginia in the United States and Ningxiz in China are just a few examples of some areas that are covered in detail for the first time in this guide. Although the emphasis is on international vineyards, more than 70 North American sites are featured. This is the ultimate book for wine lovers, widely recognized by critics and experts alike as the most authoritative wine reference-work available. It also makes a great gift, although after examining it, it will be difficult to surrender. The Sunday Telegraph described a previous edition of this book as "the bible for oenophiles." Indeed.

Although some are ready to say their fond farewells to 2013, thought needs to be given to the 12 months that just passed as taxfiling season approaches. Tax season is a few months away, but it's never too soon to begin preparations for filing income taxes. Some people prefer to toast the new year and then arrange appointments with their accountants, while others use the new year as an opportunity to get organized and start compiling paperwork and tax questions. Preparing for tax time at the dawn of a new year can make the process

Some accountants will lower their fees if people do some of the filing preparation work themselves. This can include creating a profit/loss statement on investments, or working up a tally of charitable donations. Make an itemized list of all pertinent information so it will behandy when tax-filing time arrives. • Decide on a filing option. Technology has made filing taxes much easier. Tax preparation software is available for those

Although the goal is to get a refund each and every year, taxpayers sometimes owe money, which can be troublesome for men and women whose budgets are stretched thin already. Those who owed money in the past should begin saving money for tax expenses as early as possible. • Develop a good filing system. Many financial professionals will advise people to keep financial records for 7 years. Any tax documents should be kept together should they need to be referenced

Employers, charitable organizations, banks and other financial institutions begin mailing out tax forms from the previous year in early January. Individuals should keep their eyes open for any mail that appears to be taxrelated. Store these documents in a folder that can protect any sensitive information. Such folders also make information more accessible as more and more documents arrive in the mail. • Begin collecting receipts and itemizing expenses. Many expenses are tax-deductible. These can include education costs, moving expenses, home improvements, medical expenses, charitable donations and childcare costs. Store receipts and other documentation, including canceled checks, with the other tax documents. These will come in handy should an audit ever be ordered.

Factors That Might Hurt A Home’s Value Nowadays, homeowners looking to sell their homes know it's not as easy to do so as it might have been a few years ago. A struggling economy has made it difficult for many homeowners to sell their homes for a price they're comfortable with. But the sagging economy is not the only thing can make it difficult to sell a home. In fact, a host of other things, some obvious but some not so obvious, can hurt a home's value as well.

its resale value. Homeowners might want their home to reflect their own individuality, but that's not going to help when the time comes to sell the home. If the exterior paint is out of the ordinary, then it might be wise to choose a more traditional or conservative color before erecting the "For Sale" sign out front. The same goes for a home's interior. If the interior design is especially unique, a more traditional interior decor might help the home sell faster.

• Location: A home's location is arguably its best or worst selling point. A home in a great location won't be as difficult to sell as a home in a bad neighborhood. But location goes beyond a neighborhood's reputation, especially in recent years. Homeowners who live in a neighborhood or development with many foreclosures might find those foreclosed properties are hurting their own home's value. Lots of foreclosures could negatively affect a neighborhood's reputation, which might make a home within that neighborhood less attractive to prospective buyers.

• Size and Style: Another thing to consider when selling a home is its size and style. A home that stands out on the block might be an attention-grabber, but that's not always attractive to prospective buyers. For instance, a colonial sitting in the middle of a street filled with contemporary homes will stand out, but likely for all the wrong reasons. It will likely appear dated and out of place, which is something buyers might not want. In addition, if the home is considerably larger or smaller than the surrounding homes, then this could hurt its value.

• Appearance: A home's appearance is another obvious variable that might affect

• Non-Conformity: In many ways, conformity is not considered an admirable trait. But

when selling a home, conformity could make the difference between a home selling quickly or remaining on the market for months if not years. When shopping for a home, buyers often shop in certain neighborhoods and towns and might see many different homes within a given zip code. Homeowners with homes that don’t conform to others in the area might find it difficult to sell their homes. For instance, homeowners trying to sell a two bedroom home in a neighborhood filled with three bedroom homes might notice their home’s value is not as high as that of surrounding homes, regardless of the neighborhood or how similar the home’s exterior is to surrounding homes. • Age: Older homes might have character and a sense of nostalgia, but appraisers take age into consideration when determining a home’s value. And buyers tend to lean toward newer homes for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the feeling that newer homes have far more modern amenities than older homes. When it comes to a home’s value, there are a host of things that could ultimately increase or decrease that value in the eyes of prospective buyers. ∑
