FREE Kitchen Vent Fan Stops Working Q: The vent fan above my stove no longer runs. The light on the vent hood works fine, just the fan is not operating. How can I fix this? A: Double-check the fuse at the circuit box. This is the easiest and fastest thing to check. If it has tripped, reset the switch. If that isn’t the issue, it’s time to check the unit itself. Turn off power to the vent fan at the circuit box. Remove the fan’s protective grill and filter. Use a flashlight, peer up past the fan blades to see if you can locate a plug that runs from the fan motor to a receptacle inside the fan unit. If you can’t see it, carefully remove the fan bracket by loosening the mounting screws on either side of the housing. Ease the fan and motor out of the housing just a few inches to see how it’s connected. If the fan has a plug from the motor to the receptacle, make sure it is plugged in completely. Inspect the plug cord for fraying or other damage and look at the receptacle as well. Now is a good time to get a look at the fan itself and make sure the blades are undamaged and attached securely. If you can’t see anything wrong, plug the unit in securely, remount the fan and motor, and test the fan by turning the circuit back on and then switching the fan on. If the motor is directly wired to the house wiring, proceed with caution. You will need to use a circuit tester to make sure no power is reaching the unit. Without touching any bare wires, place one probe from your circuit tester into one of the wire connectors. Place the other probe against the grounding screw on the fan unit’s metal housing. If the circuit tester glows, power is still reaching the unit -- don’t do anything until you’ve switched off the correct circuit at the panel. Repeat the test with all the wire connectors. Once you’ve ensured power is not reaching the fan unit, make sure the wiring is not frayed or otherwise damaged. If it is, bring in an electrician to repair the wires and check the entire circuit for unseen problems. If everything looks OK and undamaged, you’ll likely need to replace the fan. Kitchen fans can run around $100 by themselves, and you might have to hunt a bit for replacements for older models. HOME TIP: Clean the kitchen fan’s filter every month by removing it, soaking it in warm soapy water, and cleaning with a soft cloth. Reinstall when it’s completely dry. 10

The do-it-yourselfers know the sweatequity that goes into home improvement projects and can give homeowners a greater sense of pride in their homes. But no two home improvement projects are the same, and homeowners should know that certain projects are best tackled during certain times of the year. Fall is a great season to work on your house, as the weather is often at its most agreeable once the summer heat has gone and before winter weather arrives. The following are a handful of fallfriendly home improvement projects for homeowners looking to improve their homes. Roof Repair -Whether you’re repairing or replacing the roof, fall is a great time of year to dust off the ladder and get some work done on your roof for a variety of reasons.

First and foremost, fall is ideal for roof work because you won’t have to be up on the roof with the summer heat bearing down on you. This can make the project move along more quickly, which is especially beneficial if you are paying laborers to work on the roof. The fewer hours workers are fixing your roof, the less you will be paying in labor costs. In addition, fixing up the roof in the fall ensures those winter storms, be it rain or snow, won’t find their way into your home via leaks. A leaky roof in winter is hard to fix, as the roof surface could be treacherous in the winter and winter winds can make it dangerous to be up on the roof at all. Addressing leaks in the fall can prevent damage to your home’s interior, which can mount up if a leaky roof is not addressed until the following spring. Window Work - When the weather outside gets frightful, poorly insulated windows can allow cold air into the home. That often has a trickle-down effect on finances, forcing you to turn up the thermostat in an attempt to offset the cold air pouring into the home. Whether you need your windows replaced or simply need to patch up any leaks, a proactive approach to leaky or older windows in the fall can save you from unnecessarily high heating bills come the winter. Addressing leaky windows also makes a home more comfortable for its inhabitants. Fall is the ideal time to address a home’s windows because the temperature outside tends to be pleasant. This means you likely won’t have to make much of an effort to offset the elements, and open windows in the fall won’t make your home’s interior very hot or cold like

they might if you were to tackle the project during the summer or winter. Fixing the Floors - Wood flooring is a hot commodity for many homeowners. But not all flooring can be added to a home at any time of year. That’s because certain types of flooring employ adhesives that need temperatures inside the home to be within a certain range, and that range is often within 70° to 80° F, which makes fall a great time to install such floors. Colder temperatures can make it difficult for the flooring to dry and bond, which will prove problematic down the road. What’s more, many people entertain friends and family come late fall and into the holiday season, and it can be difficult to do so if you are busy installing new flooring. Painting Projects - Painting is another home improvement project that seems tailor-made for fall. A fresh coat of paint or a new color scheme around the house can give a home an entirely new look and feel. But paint can be pungent and the aromas may last if it’s applied at a time of year when it can’t dry while the windows are wide open. Paint fumes inside a home can make the home uninhabitable, but painting at a time of year like the fall, when you can keep the windows open during and after the project, can help air the home out. But interior painting isn’t the only painting project homeowners can tackle in the fall. Many exterior paints are temperature-sensitive and need the temperature outside to be above 40° F. Paint that freezes won’t dry properly, and homeowners might be left with a costly and unsightly mistake on their hands. Fall temperatures tend to be amenable to both interior and exterior painting projects, just be sure to check the weather forecast before making your first brush stroke. ∑

Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The following are a handful of activities that are tailor-made for fall.

Raking leaves: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some homemade crafts with the leaves you and your youngsters just collected. Apple picking: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous with fall than apple picking. Many apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their own apples in the fall. Once your family and you have scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax with a cup of warm apple cider before returning home to make some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious apple pie.

Hayride: Hayrides are another fall tradition, and many farms offer relaxing hayrides throughout fall. Corn maze: Visiting a corn maze is another activity that many people instantly associate with fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Pumpkin picking: Much like apple picking is best in fall, so is pumpkin picking. Rather than buying your pumpkin from the grocery store, where your options may be limited, go straight to the source and pick your future jack-o’-lantern from a nearby pumpkin patch, which will provide a much wider selection. Let your youngsters pick their own pumpkins and then spend the rest of the day carving them at home. And don’t forget to save those seeds, which can be roasted over an open flame to make a delicious snack. ∑

It took over 23 months from concept to opening Jordans TM Western Dining. It was entirely designed to be built around Gillette and the area’s history. Eg: the entire theme is “Western Steak House Design”. From the horse hitch-ups on the front of the building, which are all original late 1800’s, to the gas lamps on the outside, which are burning true natural gas. They have numerous Boon & Crocket mounts in the building like a Moose, Mountain Lion, Elk, Big Horn Sheep, and Mule Deer. They have western paintings including several by John Fischer’s brother Pete Fischer. Pete Fischer also has a painting in the President George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and so many beautiful bronzes inside. Jordans TM bar came out of the original “Log Cabin Saloon” in the historic district of Baker City, Oregon. Baker City is located about 125 miles northwest of Boise, Idaho along the old Oregon Trail between the Elkhorn and the Wallowa Mountains. It was known for its gold mining and lumber industries. History says that the town was part of our rugged frontier heritage and was known for its allnight saloons.

John Fischer - Chief Executive Officer

John has more than 30 years experience in the mining, power and primary metals industries; including building several industrial companies which served the energy industries. He has authored and co-authored numerous patents related to leading technology in coalfired power and primary metals pollution control. He serves as the Secretary of Energy on the National Coal Council. also he is on the board of the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business and is Chairman Emeritus. John was inducted in the Boulder County Business Hall of Fame, and is the CEO of Breakthrough Energy LLC, a capital investment firm. He is currently involved in energy, foods and other industries. John has been married to Faye Fischer for 38 years and they have two children, Jordan and Baird.

Jordan Fischer - Chief Operating Officer

Mike Hoff was the original owner of the Log Cabin Saloon (pictured above). The saloon was also known as “The Silver Dollar Log Cabin Saloon” and continued until 2010. Jordans TM is now open for lunch, offering a nice selection on their menu, while an award winning chef prepares the dinner menu. They have seating for up to 290 inside and out, and can hold banquets for up to 60 seated in the banquet room. They can configure the rest of the building for larger groups, if needed. There is a room dedicated to the heritage of the railroad industry, the Train Room. Also there is the Fireside Room with a real wood burning fireplace and the Ranchers Room in tribute to the ranching industry. JORDANS TM also supports the Future Farmers of America (FFA) to help sustain our farming and ranching industries. FFA and JORDANS TM together represent the food industry from start to finish.

Jordan Fischer was born in Denver, CO in 1980 and graduated from Colorado State University in 2003. She started volunteering for the Bush 43 White House in her junior year as a press advance representative and after graduation, she was hired into a permanent position at the White House. For the next seven years, she made more trips with President Bush than any other person in the White House. Today Jordan still travels with President George W. Bush and Laura Bush to Africa in support of the Red Ribbon Pink Ribbon initiative. In 2011, when she moved back west, Jordan decided to open a restaurant and settled on Gillette as the perfect community. While her restaurant project was in development; Jordan returned to school and earned a degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson Wales University. She is thrilled to bring a quality dining experience to the town she has grown to love. In addition to owning and operating JORDANS tm, Jordan is involved in numerous civic organizations and boards.

Christopher Hinds - Executive Chef

Chris grew up in and around Austin, Texas with a family that loved to cook and entertain friends. When he wasn’t in the city, he spent summers running free on his father’s farm. Chris quickly developed a passion for creating memorable experiences that connect his guests to farmers and artisans. After earning a bachelors degree in business administration from Austin College in 2007, Chris went on to earn a culinary arts degree from the Culinary Institute of America in 2009. He has worked under multiple renowned chefs in Dallas, New York, and Cape Cod/Nantucket. Most recently, Chris was the head chef at The Brotherhood of Thieves, one of the most celebrated restaurants on Nantucket Island, where he won several accolades from Zagat, the Nantucket Inquirer & Mirror and five awards from the leading publication Cape Cod Life. Chris is married, and he has two daughters, Nora, and Zara, who was born on January 6th. He is very excited to play a key role in Gillette’s most talked-about new restaurant. October 2013

We have seen interest rates take the largest jump in 26 years but seem to have leveled off between 4%-4.5%. That certainly has affected sales. The average sales price is up slightly as new construction continues to move along through the building season. This combined with lower days on market certainly make it a great time to sell or buy. This means it is still taking less time to sell. You can see the average list price to sales price is down just a little bit meaning buyers do have a little more leverage in terms of negotiation. The commercial market has seen dramatic increases in sales through the 3rd quarter of 2013. Although the days on market has increased we have seen a large increase in volume as well as increase in total sales.

Hunting the Best Private Land

Let’s Face It. Not everyone can own our own hunting ground. So whether you are hunting the big one or wanting to keep the turkey tradition, there are only two options. Hunting heavily used public land or asking landowners if you can hunt their private, less pressured, land. Even land that looks unavailable may be available to you. A recent survey showed 25% of private landowners who posted “No Trespassing” signs on their land would still say “Yes” to allow deer hunters access. Public or Private Land for Hunting? Two hunting options… hunt on public land or travel country roads asking farmers and landowners if you could hunt on their land. Deer, antelope, pheasant or anything else, make sure you have permission in writing to hunt on the land. Public land can hold many deer and antelope. But, it can also hold more hunters. Hunting private land, with the landowner’s permission, seems to allow more game that were less pressured. Getting the Yes If you hear “No”, don’t take it personally. Your knock on the door is the first time this person has seen you. The landowner doesn’t know you. When you hear “No”, thank them and move on. Start in the spring of the year asking permission to deer hunt during the fall. If the landowner has a working farm, wait until after crops are planted and never bother farmers milking cows either. They are busy working. Stop by midday and introduce yourself to begin cultivating a private land deer

hunting relationship. Ask the farmer if he/she needs a hand. Whether it be cleaning the barn, mowing the yard or baling hay. Offer your help for free. The farmer will ask what you want for helping. Let them know you would like to deer hunt in the fall. Keep in Touch Keep in touch with the landowner regularly. Stop by and say hello once in a while. Visit a while, offer to help with chores or schedule a day to come back to help in the field. Bring the landowner a gift. It’s not a bribe. Grab extras at the local farmer’s market, bring some fresh produce from your own garden or perhaps you’ve caught an extra fish. Bring some to the landowner as a token of friendship. After hunting season, regardless of whether or not the game was harvested from their land or not, bring the landowner some venison. Deer sausage, especially deer summer sausage, goes over very well. All told, most people will never turn down the gift of deer summer sausage. Giving these small gifts - whether it be time, berries or venison sausage and meat - to the landowner it shows you are not just using them to deer hunt. It shows your true appreciation, the trust they show you. And of course you could even send the landowner a Christmas card. Cardinal Rules for Hunting Private Land... Respect the landowner’s property and wishes! If the landowner asks you to deer hunt a certain section, do it. They are asking for a reason. The bottom line is that the reason doesn’t matter. It is what

the landowner wants! Always leave the land in as good of or better shape than when you arrived to hunt. What does this mean? If you pack it in, take it out with you. Landowners have pride in their land. Most work really hard to make their land what it is. One sure fire way to not get asked back to deer hunt the following year is to leave garbage around your deer hunting stand site. To Gain Permission to Hunt on Private Land. • Build a relationship with the landowner long before deer hunting season opens. • Never take “No” personally. A “No,” in many cases, is simply the landowner wanting to get to know you better. • Offer to help the landowner with some daily chores. • Keep in touch with the landowner on a regular basis • Bring the landowner some steaks, chops and deer sausage at the end of the season. • Send a holiday card and a note of thanks. • Respect the landowner’s property and wishes. Changing seasons can be tough on a lawn. Always exposed to the elements, lawns can fare especially poorly upon the arrival of winter, a season known for its harsh and unforgiving weather. Even the most perfectly manicured lawn can suffer at the hands of winter weather, causing homeowners to sit idly by and hope spring arrives that much sooner.

But as punishing as winter weather can be on a lawn, homeowners are not without recourse. Much like homeowners can take steps to help their lawns survive sizzling summer heat waves during the warmer months of the year, they also can take steps to help their lawns make it through the often stormy weather synonymous with winter. Don’t procrastinate. Putting off the process of winterizing a lawn can put that lawn in jeopardy. Lawns will turn dormant the closer you get to winter, and they may reject the nutrients found in fertilizer as a result. Those nutrients will prove valuable once spring weather returns, so start the winterization process in early fall so the lawn has sufficient time to absorb nutrients and strengthen itself for the seasons to come. Treat trouble spots. Summer can be even harder on a lawn than winter, especially for those lawns located in regions where heat waves and drought are common. In such instances, certain spots on the lawn seem to be hit harder than others, and those spots should get special attention when winterizing the lawn. Check the soil’s pH levels before fertilizing or applying any treatments. Such a test will reveal which spots need the most attention, and treating trouble spots now will make spring lawn care that much easier.

Aerate the property. Aerating can help a lawn recover after a long summer and help it survive the potentially harsh months that lie ahead. Aerating, which involves puncturing the soil or removing cores of soil from the ground, can restore a lawn to health by improving its drainage and allowing more water and air to reach the roots of the grass. Aerating also makes it easier for nutrients to penetrate the soil, which encourages a healthier lawn over the long haul. Aerators can be purchased or rented, but homeowners uncomfortable with the process may want to enlist a professional to tackle the job. Parents of small children who spend lots of time in the yard may need to aerate their lawn more than most, as heavy lawn traffic compresses the soil, a potentially harmful process that can be reversed via aeration. Take steps to strengthen the roots. Aerating promotes stronger roots, but homeowners might also want to find a winterizing product with potassium and phosphorous, both of which can strengthen roots. Different types of lawns will respond differently to certain winterizers, so discuss your options with a lawn care professional who can help you find the right fit for your property. Remove debris from the lawn. Debris left on a lawn over the winter can prove very harmful. Piles of debris left scattered around a lawn can suffocate the blades of grass, leading to long-term damage and a potentially unsightly lawn come the spring. In addition, piles of debris might make good homes for organisms that can damage the lawn. As fall moves into winter, periodically remove all debris, including leaves and branches fallen from trees. Make the lawn off-limits once the temperatures dip below freezing. A lawn should be off-limits once the ground freezes. Stepping on grass that has frozen will leave noticeable footprints, and walking on frozen grass can kill the turf. When winter arrives, people should avoid using the lawn as a shortcut into and out of your home and stick to driveways and sidewalks instead.

Thousands upon thousands of women have battled breast cancer. Some have pulled through the disease, while others succumbed to the disease after a brave fight. Few people who have waged war with breast cancer are better known than Susan Komen, a name many instantly associate with the organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the most widely known, largest and well-funded breast cancer organization in the United States. Susan G. Komen was born Susan Goodman in 1943 in Peoria, Ill. According to her sister, Nancy, Susan was the high school homecoming queen and a college beauty queen. After graduating from college, Goodman returned to her hometown and pursued modeling, eventually marrying her high school sweetheart, Stan. Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977 after finding a lump that subsequent testing revealed was cancerous. Komen underwent a procedure called a subcutaneous mastectomy, in which the outside of the breast tissue was left intact, but the interior breast tissue was removed. The doctor who did the procedure assured Komen that she was cured. Despite urging her sister to get a second opinion, Komen was convinced she was safe. But within six months, Komen found another lump under her arm and, by this point, it was evident that the cancer had spread. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic soon determined the cancer had metastasized to her lung and under her arm. Komen underwent several different treatments to slow the progression of the

cancer, including radiation and intense chemotherapy. However, the cancer continued to spread and eventually her body developed a resistance to most of the medication. During treatment, Komen repeatedly spoke with her sister about her wish to make the entire breast cancer experience and treatments in the hospital more palatable for women, including improving the appearance of waiting rooms and treatment centers, and doing other things to help comfort those who would find themselves in similar situations in the future. Komen lost her battle with breast cancer in 1980 at age 36. By the time of her death, Komen had undergone nine operations and three courses of chemotherapy and radiation. Nancy Goodman Brinker then made it her mission to do everything she could to help end breast cancer and increase awareness of this potentially deadly disease. In 1982, Brinker established the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in her sister’s memory. Since its inception, the organization, now called Susan G. Komen for the Cure, has provided funding for basic, clinical and translational breast

cancer research projects. It also has become instrumental in breast health education and urging women to do self-screening while promoting annual mammograms. Through the years, the foundation has teamed up with many well-known businesses, brands and organizations as part of its fundraising efforts. To date, the organization has invested $750 million in breast cancer research, awarding many thousands of dollars in grants in countries around the world. Through her struggle with breast cancer, Susan Goodman Komen unknowingly inspired an organization that has helped to save the lives of millions.

“Not Just a Cow Town”

Wyoming had 14 counties when Campbell County was formed by the Eleventh Wyoming Legislature along with Goshen, Hot Springs, Lincoln, Niobrara, Platte and Washakie counties. It was named for two Campbells: Robert Campbell who was with Ashley’s expedition in this part of the country from 1825 to 1835; and also John A. Campbell, the first Territorial Governor. Lew G. Butler (Left) was the first Sheriff of Campbell County from 1913 to 1914. He hailed from Omaha, working as a bronco buster and cowboy. He knew the West better than most, having trailed cattle from the Gulf of Mexico to the “British Possessions.” Lew retired to California after having spent forty years bucking the winters of Wyoming. Following several years of ranching, Alexander Bright Maycock and his brother Joseph Michael Maycock started Stockman’s Bank on January 7, 1907. The Maycock brothers together with William R. Wright, John A. Allison and N. W. Chassell put their own money together to total the $10,000 minimum capital required by state law to become a new bank. The bank was in business until 1987.

the house on the corner of Ross and 4th Street in 1910 but preferred life on the ranch 25 miles west of Gillette. William Underwood worked as a carpenter, blacksmith, barber and in the livery barn. When he ordered lumber to finish building a school in 1892, he found himself in the lumber business. Underwood Lumber built the first addition on the Goings Hotel; the building for the Bank of Gillette; and several other buildings in early Gillette. The Bank of Gillette started in 1902 making it Gillette’s first organized bank. It occupied a small frame building downtown until 1920 when “Gillette’s million dollar bank” was built. Edelman Drug Store occupied this building as of June 1935. The Edelman family still owns this impressive building today which houses Pat’s Hallmark at the corner of

Second Street and Gillette Avenue. The Keeline family started with George Frederick Keeline, a native of Germany who came to Wyoming in 1874. His sons, grandsons and nephews continued ranching operations in Campbell and Weston Counties using brands such as “Hogeye”, “Flying Circle” and “TY” – one of the oldest brands in the state. The Keelines ran both cattle and sheep. The hard winter of 1911 meant losses of 22,000 sheep in just the Keeline ranches. In 1918, William O. “Bill” and Willa Mae Bishop ran several thousand sheep, two hundred head of horses and thirty seven Hereford cows. Many

ranchers tried raising more than one type of livestock. Sheep were popular with some because of the two possible income sources – wool and meat. By 1943, the Bishop ranch was an allcattle operation.

Hamilton “Hamp” Smith built a livery barn at Second Street and Kendrick Avenue, later selling it to Simon P. Hardy. In 1926 the Saunders family bought it and turned it into a lumber yard. Saunders Lumber Company was started November 1, 1921 when the W.B. Saunders family moved here from Billings, Montana. In those early days at Christmas, the company gave every widow in Gillette a pick-up load of kindling, split and ready for use. A Campbell County fair was the dream of L.P. McVay, a homesteader south of Gillette in 1916. He built a school building for his daughters to attend and interested his neighbors in holding a county fair in the school house. Gillette merchants donated prizes; the Gillette City Band performed; races were held and a few hardy souls put on a rodeo for entertainment.

The County Fair outgrew its little school house south of Gillette in just a few years. It was then moved to the Savageton Hall and finally to Gillette where there was a large piece of land just east of the Rockpile. People watched the fair activities and rodeos from the Rockpile for many years.
