Gatherings with friends and family are a big part of the holiday season. Many people travel during the holidays to spend time with distant relatives, but those same people often want to gather with those loved ones who live nearby as well. Thus an abundance of gatherings comes in December, when office parties, dinners with family and festivities with friends have a way of dominating the last five weeks of the year. All of those gatherings translate to a lot of holiday hosting, and hosts can easily feel overwhelmed as they try to juggle hosting duties with everything else that comes along during this time of year. The following are a few steps holiday hosts can take to make hosting a lot less hectic and a lot more fun. Enlist help. Just because a holiday party is at your home does not mean others can’t pitch in or will be unwilling to help. If you plan to decorate for the party, invite a friend over to assist. When hosting a holiday dinner party, ask guests to bring certain items to save you some work. Ask one guest to bring some dessert, saving you the time it takes to visit the local bakery or bake your own desserts, and ask others to provide side dishes. This drastically reduces the time it will take you to shop for groceries and cook the meal, leaving you more time to spend with friends and family, both during the party and in the days leading up to the festivities.

Planning a party at the last minute can be stressful, so if you know you will be handling hosting duties this holiday season, start preparing for the party as soon as possible. Hire a cleaning service. One of the more difficult parts of holiday hosting is cleaning the house before guests arrive. A thorough house cleaning can take up a substantial amount of time, which tends to be hard to come by during the holiday season. To avoid a late night cleaning session or the need to spend a valuable weekend afternoon hard at work around the house, hire a cleaning service to come and clean your house in the days before the party. Such services can clean your home in a fraction of the time it might take you to do so on your own, and this removes one of the more timeconsuming and arduous tasks from your to-do list. Have a theme for the party. Holiday hosts may worry about how to entertain their guests

throughout the party. A theme party makes it easier to entertain guests, who can show up decked out in holiday pajamas or sweaters or bring along a favorite unique compilation of holiday songs for a sing-along. Such themes set a tone for the party right away and often make it easier for guests to unwind immediately. Seek suggestions for a theme from your guests to make the party even more fun. Pass the buck. Hosting a holiday dinner party? Consider passing the hosting duties on to a local restaurant, especially if your friends and family members are on board with the idea. If your schedule is especially hectic this holiday season, then move the party from your home to a local restaurant, where the staff can worry about accommodating your guests and you can simply relax and have a good time with your loved ones. When choosing a restaurant, look for one with a menu that features something for everyone. Entree selections should include a pasta dish, a beef dish, a seafood dish, a poultry dish, and vegetarian fare. Holiday hosting is meant to be fun, but hosts often find themselves scrambling to prepare for the party as it draws closer. Planning early, seeking help and input from your guests and delegating certain tasks can help ensure hosts have as festive a time as their friends and family members.
Older Faucet Still Can be Repaired Q: The faucet on the utility sink in my basement is leaking. It’s one of those older faucets with a threaded spout where you can attach a hose, and a wingnut-looking handle. Can this be repaired, or is it too old? -- Clive in Pittsburgh A: If the leak is caused by a worn seal or washer, you should be able to find an adequate replacement in a universal washer kit. This inexpensive item is available at hardware and homeimprovement stores and has a variety of different washers and seals to solve problems exactly like yours. The type of faucet you described is likely a hose bib. These are pretty reliable and long-lasting, but the washers can wear out just like any other faucet. You’ll need to disassemble the handle to get to the assembly inside. First, shut off water to the faucet at the nearest shutoff valve. This may be located under the sink, or further along the piperun since it’s a utility sink. Unscrew the small screw in the top of the faucet’s handle. Then pull the handle up and off. Just below the stem is the packing nut -- the large nut just underneath the handle. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the packing nut. Next, carefully unscrew the spindle. It’s important to not scratch the spindle shaft or strip the ridges at the end of it. You can use pliers (channel-type) to do this, but try wrapping a soft cloth around the spindle to protect it. Remove the spindle from the faucet valve. Now you’re ready to replace the damaged washers. The assembly should have two: a packing washer, just under the packing nut; and a stem washer, near the bottom of the spindle. Remove the old washers, and locate same-size replacements from the universal kit. Reassemble the spindle using the replacement washers, reinsert into the valve and screw the packing nut back into place. Slide the handle back on and attach with the small screw. Test the faucet by turning the water back on and turning the faucet on and off. HOME TIP: Some professionals recommend coating new washers with a heatproof grease to prevent them from cracking, while others say it doesn’t matter. Use your own judgment.

Lighting
Holiday lighting displays are a beloved holiday tradition. Many families enjoy illuminating their homes with decorative lights, and some communities even reward the household that goes above and beyond with their holiday lighting display. But as enjoyable and eye-catching as such displays can be, they also can be equally as dangerous. Hanging lights carries a certain degree of risk, and it's best for homeowners to be as cautious as possible when erecting their holiday lighting displays. • Start with the lights. Inspecting the lights is an important part of creating a safe holiday lighting display, and this inspection should occur before you begin decorating. Examine each string of lights for damaged wires, including any loose connections or broken sockets. Discard any damaged sets before decorating. If your inspection turns up any burned out bulbs, always replace the older bulbs with new bulbs of the same wattage. In the past, a good rule of thumb was to limit each extension cord to no more than three sets of lights. However, if using LED bulbs, which consume as much as 90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, you can have more sets connected to a single extension cord. After inspecting the lights, inspect the other tools you will be using. Make sure the ladder is sturdy and that your staple gun and other tools are ready to be used. If any tools fail your inspection, delay the decorating until you can find adequate replacements.
• Only decorate in the daytime. Sunlight can be sparse during the holiday season, when the sun goes down before many working men and women leave their offices much less arrive home. But decorating at night is asking for trouble, so make time to decorate during the daytime. Decorating during the day makes it easier to see potentially problematic power lines, and the weather likely won't be as harsh during the daytime as it will be at night, reducing your risk for injury. • Never decorate alone. When decorating, always have someone nearby in case of emergency. Falling from a ladder can cause serious harm, but having someone there to hold the ladder can reduce your risk of falling. In addition, a decorating partner can contact emergency personnel should you suffer an injury and become unable to reach the telephone. • Trim trees before decorating. Winter might not be the ideal time to trim trees, but streaming lights on overgrown trees could pose a significant safety risk. A tree that hasn't been trimmed might have grown close to power lines. When that tree is covered in holiday lights, contact with the power line could electrify the tree, potentially causing property damage or personal injury to anyone within close proximity to the affected tree. If you're worried about trimming a tree outside of its recommended trimming season, do not decorate that tree with any lights. • Strategically place lights. Lights should never conceal a window, and the cords should never be run across walkways or steps. Lights that are strewn across a window pose a safety hazard should a fire occur at the home and window escape is needed. Cords that have been run across walkways and steps pose a tripping hazard, especially if a light snowfall makes it difficult for family members or guests to see the cords on the ground. • Make sure the lights are not on when no one is home. Lights should never be on when no one is home. This poses a significant safety risk, and no homeowner wants to arrive home to see their house has burned down or suffered damage from a fire. In addition, turn the lights off before you go to sleep at night. This makes the home safer at night and will save you a substantial amount of money. ∑ DECEMBER 2013

Gift cards are a staple of the holiday season. Often a go-to gift when other options just do not seem to suffice, gift cards remove the worry about whether or not the item will fit or if it’s the right color or model. Today’s gift cards are better than those of yesteryear, which typically came with expiration dates and onerous fees. E-gift cards, which can be purchased and redeemed online, are among the most convenient of all gift cards. Although gift cards have many positive attributes, it’s difficult to overlook that gift cards are viewed as a safe gift lacking in originality. But the National Retail Federation notes that in 2011, 57.7% of survey respondents said they would prefer to get a gift card that year. This ranks gift cards higher than electronics, clothing and accessories as desired gifts. Recipients of holiday cheer seemingly would like to pick out their own presents, which can ease the burden on giftgivers searching high and low for the perfect gifts. Still, giving a gift card can remove some of the excitement of unwrapping a mystery gift. By employing a few creative tips, gift cards can be fun and unique.

Whether you’re waiting to board at the gate or driving on a seemingly endless highway, pack some distractions so you or your fellow travelers aren’t left with nothing to do during delays. People traveling via airplane may want to bring along a book or a tablet on which they can play games or watch television. Drivers may not be able to take their eyes off the roads, but they can pack books and tablets or video game consoles for their passengers. This is a recipe from a friend’s mother. Think of it as a protein bar and it makes you feel better. You can substitute healthier versions of the ingredients to make it healthier and even more protein loaded. Ingredients • 1 cup white sugar • 1 cup light corn syrup • 1 cup peanut butter • 6 cups Special K cereal • 1 cup butterscotch chips • 1 cup chocolate chips
Directions Boil the sugar and the corn syrup at a full boil for 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Stir in the peanut butter. At this point either stir in the Special K (if you used a large pot) or pour the mixture over the Special K cereal in a mixing bowl. Place the cereal mixture in a well greased 9 X 13 pan. Melt the butterscotch and chocolate chips together and pour over the cereal mixture. Let cool, cut into 24 squares. Notes: For easy cutting, let cool for an hour or so. Do not smooth or compact the Special K mixture or topping more than the minimum required to spread it.

Deadwood’s Crown Jewel:
The Historic Adams House Nestled in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, Deadwood was the site of one of North America’s last major gold rushes. Gold was discovered in Deadwood Gulch in 1875 and the rush for riches was on. By the summer of 1876, western legends Wild Bill and Calamity Jane made their way to the mining camp. Shacks and tents filled the slopes as people poured into the gulch. Although Deadwood had all the markings of being nothing more than a temporary and lawless boomtown, the mining camp quickly evolved into a burgeoning, law-abiding community of opportunity. It was this environment that greeted two of Deadwood’s future leaders and entrepreneurs: Harris Franklin and W.E. Adams. Each established profitable businesses, thus enabling Franklin to build the luxurious mansion at 22 Van Buren Street which would later also become the home of W.E. Adams.
From humble beginnings, Jewish immigrants Harris and Anna Franklin amassed a fortune made through the wholesale liquor business, cattle, gold mining and banking. To properly reflect the family’s wealth and status in Deadwood, the Franklins had the town’s first architect-designed Queen Anne-style home built in 1892. According to the local newspaper, the home was “equal in point of beauty to anything of its kind West of Omaha.” Following Anna Franklin’s death in 1902, Harris remarried and sold the home to his son Nathan and his wife Ada for a dollar in 1905. Like his father, Nathan Franklin became an important businessman and community leader 40

pursuing careers in pharmaceuticals and later banking. Nathan Franklin was also civic-minded, serving two terms as Deadwood mayor in 1914 and 1916. He and Ada decided to follow Harris to New York City. In 1920, the Franklins sold their home for $8,500 to W.E. Adams and his wife Alice. William Emery (W.E.) Adams and his older brother James arrived in the Black Hills in arch 1877 here they established the Banner rocery Store. W.E. eventually bought out his brother’s interest. By 1894, Adams had moved the business to Sherman Street where he initially built a two-story building. He expanded the structure over the following fifteen years to the four-story Adams Block that survives today.
In addition to being a successful businessman, W.E. Adams was a devoted family man. He married Alice Burnham in 1880. They had two daughters: Lucile, born in 1884 and Helen, born in 1892. Lucile married

banker Frank Strattan in 1909. They moved to Detroit where she died from typhoid fever three years later. Helen married developer Irving Benton in 1915 and lived in Pasadena, CA.
In 1925, W.E. and Alice learned they were to be grandparents for the first time. Unfortunately, this welcome news was soon followed by Alice’s distressing diagnosis of cancer. In the month of June 1925, W.E. Adams faced multiple tragedies. While visiting Helen in preparation for the birth of the grandchild, Alice died suddenly on June 6. A distraught Helen went into early labor and died the following
day. Her baby daughter lived only a few hours. Within a period of 48 hours, W.E. Adams had lost his entire family. He laid them to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Pasadena. With all of his hopes, dreams and loves laid to rest in California,
Adams returned to his empty home in Deadwood where he wrote, “I feel like one forsaken and do not see ahead of me in this world much, if any, happiness.” One year later, however, Adams did again find happiness when he met Mary Mastrovich Vicich while riding on a train traveling from California to South Dakota. Mary was a young widow originally from Lead. She was making her annual trip to see her mother when she found herself assigned to the same seat as Mr. Adams’ valet. Adams and she spent the remainder of the trip visiting. This soon led to a whirlwind romance resulting in
the marriage of the 73-year-old W.E. to the 29-year-old Mary in 1927. While the May-December marriage did cause tongues to wag and eyebrows to rise in some circles, the couple ignored the gossip. For seven years they enjoyed each other’s company and worked on charitable causes together. It was at Mary’s suggestion W.E. build the Adams Museum in memory of his first wife and daughters. Following the death of W.E. Adams in 1934, Mary closed up the house, leaving everything virtually intact. For a half-century, time stood still: monogrammed linens lay folded in drawers; fine china was stacked in cupboards and even the cookies in the glass jar remained untouched. In 1998, the nation’s leading historic
preservation experts restored the mansion to its former glory. As presented, the Historic Adams House is a classic example of stylish upper class living, from the turn of the century through the Depression era. The visitor crosses the threshold of the double entry doors beneath jeweltoned stained glass, and enters a world of elegance and influence. City Hall opened at 400 South Gillette Avenue in October 1936 with City government offices and the fire department. When the old fire siren would sound, fire fighters would telephone the operator to see where the fire was located. The telephone lines would get so busy with everyone in town calling about the fire that fire fighters had to give a code word to get the location. Most City departments moved out in 1978 when the City bought the old Post Office at Third Street and Gillette Avenue for temporary offices, waiting for the current City Hall to be finished in Photos Courtesy of Campbell County Rockpile Museum 1984.
He was elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives and served from 1987 to 1991 when he was elected to the Wyoming Senate. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996. He still calls Gillette home when he is in Wyoming. With additional housing needs came quality-of-life issues. In March 1961, Mayor “Peanuts” Dalbey attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the new public swimming pool. The pool was opened August 1, 1961 at a cost of $63,000. Mayor Dalbey took a dive in the new pool, fully dressed, as part of the opening ceremonies. On the prairie that was Gillette, trees were in short supply. City Hall in the 1930s was a small building on Gillette Avenue. The City jail built in 1911 was located behind City Hall. The old City Hall was used as a community building for church services, dances and public meetings. It was also the morgue. Plant Care
It’s important to note that poinsettias grow in a warm climate and therefore must be kept in tropical conditions to ensure the plant’s health. Furthermore, poinsettias bloom in response to shortening daylight hours. That means they will need ample darkness each night in order to simulate the dark nights of short, winter days. To achieve this, you may need to put the plant into a dark closet for 12 to 14 hours each night. During the day, the plant should be in a sunny window where it will have access to bright light. The more light the better. Keep the soil evenly moist. Misting the plant will help it to retain some humidity. Also, fill the overflow saucer on your flower pot with gravel to allow water seeping through the pot to evaporate from the gravel. Hot temperatures indoors combined with high humidity will help the plant to thrive. Even one day without adequate moisture can cause the leaves to drop. Furthermore, decreasing temperatures can cause leaves to fall off. The goal is to keep the indoor temperature consistent. While many poinsettia plants are discarded after the holiday season, these plants can actually be cut back and saved for next season. Trimming back any remaining leaves and continuing to care for the plant by keeping it moist can help. To force the blooms next season, start reducing the plant’s exposure to sunlight in mid-September to October. Again, this will mean removing the plant to an area that is shrouded in complete darkness. Even streetlights or indoor lighting can affect blooming. If the plant does not begin to turn color before the holiday season, you may need to purchase a new plant and try again next year. �
