Serving in the military can feel like a thankless job, as those who have not served might not be aware of the risks men and women in the military take and the sacrifices they must make to protect our country and help the less fortunate across the globe. As a result, something as simple as saying “Thank you” to a current service member or military veteran can go a long way.

Four 4-horse teams pull fresno scrapers (earth movers) at the Peerless Coal Company in 1924. Work at the mine began in 1922 by a company of men who believed Campbell County coal could be sold on the market in competition with other coal mined in Wyoming and Montana. How right they were!

Get Your Home * Ready for the * Holiday Guests
Family gatherings are synonymous with the holiday season. Even those families who have spread out far and wide often manage to come together at least once at the end of the year.
When families include members who don’t live within driving distance of one another, those who aren’t hosting the holiday festivities must plan an overnight stay. Lodging costs can be considerable during the holiday season because hotels can quickly fill to capacity. Holiday hosts who want to go the extra mile can invite guests to forgo hotels and stay overnight at their homes, where guests can spend more time with hosts and won’t have to worry about finding lodging they can afford. Though it’s a nice gesture to host overnight guests during the holiday season, it’s also one that requires a little work on the part of the hosts, who must take time out of the often hectic holiday schedule to prepare their homes for guests. The following are a few pointers for hosts who want to ensure everything is ready and accommodating for overnight guests. Take inventory of household linens. Depending on how many guests you’ll be hosting, you may need to stock up on extra linens. If only one or two people will be staying overnight, you should be able to make due with what you have. However, if you’ll be hosting a second family for the holidays, whether it’s one night or a full week, then you will likely need to buy more linens, including bedding, pillows and blankets. Take inventory of what you have and make sure you
10
www.REALIVINGWY.com
have adequate bedding for each guest, as well as some extra bedding in case of an emergency. Discuss pet allergies. Holiday hosts who have pets should discuss pet allergies with potential overnight guests well in advance of the season. If guests are allergic to your pets, then it might not be comfortable for them to stay overnight at your home. While most families would not want to shelter their pets on a holiday, doing so is an option but one that may not even be worth it. Pet hair and dander around the house might be enough to trigger an allergic attack even when the pet isn’t in or around the home, so sheltering the pet may not be a solution after all. Discuss this issue with prospective guests well in advance of the season so they have time to find affordable lodging in the event that any of them do have a pet allergy. Stock up on toiletries. Toiletries are bound to run out if you’re hosting guests for the holidays. Before guests arrive, stock up on these items, including toilet and facial tissue, hand soap, bath soap, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and extra toothbrushes in case guests forgot to pack their own. These items have no expiration date, so even if you end up buying more than you need you can always use them down the road when guests have long since returned home. Clear the house of clutter. Clutter can make a home seem even more crowded when guests are staying overnight. Clutter can accumulate anywhere in the house, from bathrooms to a
NOVEMBER 2013
living room to the kitchen. When hosting guests for the holidays, you will need all the space you can get, so clear the house of as much clutter as possible. Put all toys away and clear the common areas of items like shoes and clothing that can make a space seem more cramped. In addition, clear the dining room table of any items that aren’t needed at mealtime and choose festive centerpieces that don’t take up much space. Don’t be caught off guard by a storm. If guests will be staying multiple nights, it’s safe to assume everyone, hosts and guests included, will want to get out of the house, be it to enjoy local holiday celebrations or simply to avoid cabin fever by getting some fresh air. But the holiday season gets its fair share of inclement weather, including snowstorms. Hosts should not be caught off guard by a snowstorm, stocking up on items like a snow shovel, a snow blower and salt or a de-icing product for walkways and driveways before guests arrive. This will ensure everyone won’t feel trapped inside the house should a storm arrive unexpectedly. Hosting guests for the holidays is no small task. But hosts who prepare in advance can ensure everyone makes the most of their time together. ∑

e t a r b e Cel y a D s n a r e t e V Veterans Day is an annual holiday when veterans of the armed forces are honored and celebrated in the United States. Many people confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. While both days honor members of the armed forces, there’s a distinction between the two holidays. Memorial Day, which is celebrated in May, is a day designated for remembering servicemen and servicewomen who died while serving. Veterans Day, which is observed in November, honors all military veterans. The role of the brave men and women who serve in the military is an important one, and it’s one that warrants appreciation and celebration. The following are a few easy ways to celebrate veterans and their significant contribution to our country this Veterans Day. Offer your thanks Serving in the military can feel like a thankless job, as those who have not served might not be aware of the risks men and women in the military take and the sacrifices they must make to protect our country and help the less fortunate across the globe. As a result, something as simple as saying “Thank you” to a current service member or military veteran can go a long way. Veterans know they don’t serve in vain, but it’s still a great idea to let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and sacrifices. Help families of active military Many service members are currently stationed and serving overseas, and their families back home may need or just appreciate a helping hand. Invite family members of active military 18

over for dinner, offer to do chores like cutting the grass or shoveling the driveway when it snows or help around the house if something needs fixing. Even if families of active members serving overseas appear to be getting along great, offer your friendship and let them know you’re there to help should anything arise. Visit hospitalized veterans Unfortunately, many veterans are hospitalized after suffering an injury during a tour of duty. These veterans sacrificed their physical well-being to protect our way of life, and many spend extended periods of time in the hospital. Visiting a hospital to get to know a veteran and spend some time with him or her, sharing a few laughs and thanking them for their service, is a great way to celebrate the holiday and lift a veteran’s spirits at the same time. Recruit friends and family members to visit hospitalized veterans as well.
NOVEMBER 2013
Pay for a veterans’ night out on the town Like many people, veterans appreciate an escape from the daily grind. Men and women who want to show their appreciation to veterans can treat a veteran to a night out on the town. Have extra tickets to a ballgame or play? Donate them to a local VFW. Or if you see a veteran out on the town, offer to pay for his meal. Thank the businesses who support veterans Many businesses show their gratitude to veterans by offering them free services on Veterans Day. When a local business shows its appreciation to veterans, patronize that business and let them know you appreciate their efforts to help veterans. ∑

In light of Thanksgiving this month our book review is on Liberty B. Mouse Comes to America by Pauline C. Peck recommended for ages 0-8 years
This is a story of a little stow-a-way mouse who wanted away from London because of all the people. You learn how he survived on the ship and how he longed for land after many days of not finding edible food. This story has great pictures to entertain the minds of your little ones. Once he arrived in the new land, he waved goodbye to the big ship and to my delight, he traveled across on the Mayflower! Thanksgiving is a time that brings me back to why I am thankful to live in America. This year I am thankful for my family, my freedom, my job and so much more! This Thanksgiving please read to your children about why we celebrate Thanksgiving and if you don’t have children, pull out a good book about the 1st Thanksgiving. Share your thankfulness with others and with your loved ones. Recommended Reading from:

s e s U y n a M o S Oh d n y C a n e e w o l l a H r e v o t f e L for Halloween is certainly known for the spooky decorations that adorn homes and for the creative costumes children wear. But for many youngsters, Halloween is all about the candy. In just a few hours, trick-or-treaters can accumulate a substantial amount of assorted chocolates, confections and other sweet treats. Once everyone has had their fill of their favorite items, candy often gets relegated to a giant bowl on the kitchen table, where it beckons each resident who passes by. Rather than submitting to the call of the candy and sacrificing your dental health as a result, enterprising individuals can re-purpose that leftover Halloween candy.
Incentives Parents can store extra candy to use as rewards for good behavior. Many parents use sweet treats as rewards for children learning to potty train. Rewarding older children for a job well done cleaning up their rooms or as a special treat for scoring a good grade on a test also can be a way to put the candy to good use.

inside. Some candy can be frozen for later use in baked goods. Baked goods can be enjoyed by the family or used for bake sales for schools and other organizations.
Gingerbread houses Christmas is just two months after Halloween. Put candy into sealable baggies and use it during the holiday season when building gingerbread houses. You will have a variety of different candies from which to choose and won’t have to purchase anything new in order to decorate your creations.
Goody bags Candy is a crowd-pleaser, and leftover candy can be used in goody bags doled out at birthday parties. Keep the candy well-sealed until it is needed to fill goodie bags. Add a few trinkets that tie in with the theme of your party, and you’re all set. On a similar note, leftover candy can be used to stuff a pinata for a party. Pinatas are available in many different themes and styles, making any occasion ripe for a pinata.
Donations Hospitals, doctors’ offices and nursing homes may appreciate donations of candy for staff and visitors. You can visit different places to see if they would appreciate a candy donation.
Advent calendars Halloween candy can be saved to make an Advent calendar. This calendar traditionally counts down to Christmas,
Baking Cookies, brownies and cake bars taste even better with peanut butter cups, chocolate chips and candies baked
There are many different ways to put Halloween candy to use so it doesn’t go to waste. Let the fall fun continue. ∑
Adult beverages Hard candies can be used to add some flavor to adult beverages. Let the candy sit in the alcohol for a few hours and the candy will dissolve. Use a coffee filter to strain out any candy remnants.

Civil Air Patrol Cadets (WYCAP49069) is the sponsor of the Wreaths of America in Campbell County. Our hope is to place a wreath on every veteran's grave in Campbell County's 7 cemeteries on Saturday, December 14.
Sunday, December 8 Start of World’s Longest Veterans Parade from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery
*Sponsored wreaths are placed on the grave markers at state, national veterans cemeteries as well as local cemeteries each December. Wreaths may be purchased online at www.WreathsAcrossAmerica.org Please use this group number (WYCAP49069) when ordering. Our mission, Remember, Honor, Teach, is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies a specified Saturday in December at Arlington, as well as veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. We also organize a week of events including international veteran’s tributes, ceremonies at State Houses and a week-long “Veteran’s Parade” between Maine and Virginia where we stop along the way to spread our message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.
In 2007, the Worcester family, along with veterans, and others who had helped with their annual Christmas wreath ceremony in Arlington, formed Wreaths Across AmericaTM, to continue and expand this effort, and support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. This nonprofit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of its mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. In 2012, Wreaths Across America and our national network of volunteers laid over 420,000 memorial wreaths at over 800 locations in the United States and beyond. We accomplished this with help from 1382 fundraising groups, many corporate contributions, and
Saturday, December 14 Simultaneous wreath laying ceremonies at over 850 locations all across the country and beyond. Toni C. Brown, Major Civil Air Patrol 307-660-8592 Powder River Composite Squadron donations of trucking, shipping, and thousands of helping hands. Our annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as the world’s largest veteran’s parade, stopping at schools, monuments, veteran’s homes and communities all along the way to remind people how important it is to remember, honor and teach. Proceeds place a wreath at one of the participating cemeteries; help support our fundraising partners, educational and veteran’s services outreach. Please note that all sponsorships are sent directly to the location and no wreaths are sent to the individuals purchasing sponsorships.

Black Friday Shopping Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, and is often the perfect time to begin holiday shopping and save money on incredible deals. Thousands of eager shoppers will leave their homes in the early morning hours and wait in lines at stores in order to grab the best prices of the season, while retailers will be gearing up to lure the greatest number of shoppers. Surviving the day unscathed and arriving home with discounts galore involves having a game plan for success. Know the prices of the items you want to buy. Scour advertisements in advance of Black Friday to gauge the regular retail prices for common items, including electronics. Comparison shop for the best prices and make notes to help you when Black Friday arrives. Understand the fine print of “door busters.” Door buster sales are meant to get shoppers into stores, where retailers hope shoppers will make additional purchases while taking advantage of advertised deals. If door buster items are all you’re looking for, read the advertisements carefully, noting the start and end time of the discounts and if there will be limited quantities. In addition, determine if there is a special return policy for sale items purchased on Black Friday. Dress for comfort. Wear sensible, comfortable shoes and clothing when shopping. Leave a large purse at home and opt for something compact that can be draped securely over your shoulder and body to navigate the crowds. Keep your coat in the car or make use of a coat check service if available. Dress in layers if you will be waiting outside for stores to open. This way you can shed clothing as the mercury rises or when you get inside. Arrive together but shop separately. The “divide and conquer” method of shopping allows everyone in your shopping party to score good deals. Split up shopping tasks and then head to different areas of the store. Share and collect your purchases when you meet up after the rush. Make a list and stick to it. Buyers’ remorse come Saturday morning is common for those who have over-extended their budgets and purchased items they did not need.

. . . Tips to Get It Done!
Know ahead of time what you plan to purchase and do not veer off course. Scout the stores ahead of time. Visit the stores where you plan to shop a few days before Black Friday. Learn the layout of the store and where everything is located. Try on certain clothes or read over the labels of bigticket items you plan to buy. Knowing where items are located and having all of your information in advance will cut down on the time it takes to find items on Black Friday. Don’t overlook nontraditional stores. Many other stores, from pharmacies to supermarkets, stock items apart from food and toiletries. Consider taking advantage of their sales for some Black Friday deals. Park off campus. Mall parking lots can get just as crowded as the stores themselves. Save yourself time and the stress of finding a spot by parking near the store but away from the crowd. Clean out your car prior to shopping. Make room in the trunk or cargo area for all of your purchases. For those who will be buying large, heavy items, find out if the store will ship the merchandise or will hold it aside until you can take it home. Understand that some stores will not hold items and

enlist a friend or spouse to help you pack purchases into the car. Promptly store receipts. Designate a folder or envelope for all of your receipts to keep them organized and handy. Pack a small snack and drink. It’s easy to become dehydrated and hungry waiting in long lines, which can compromise your decisionmaking abilities. Bring a snack so that you can recharge your body and continue shopping. Leave the kids at home. Black Friday shopping can be stressful, and children can easily get lost or bumped around in the fray. It is safer to leave them home so you can focus your full attention on shopping. Know when to call it quits. Establish a firm cut-off time for ending your shopping excursion. This way you can head home, rest and sort through your purchases. ∑

Ranch A, located 5 miles from Beulah, WY off Interstate 90 Exit 205, gets its name from Moses Annenberg who purchased the property in November of 1927. (The exact date is open to debate, as is much of the information published about the Annenberg family.) Moses was an immigrant who made good. He went from working as a newspaper delivery boy to owning several newspapers, including the Philadelphia Inquirer. He and his son, Walter, were headed to Yellowstone National Park on vacation and stopped in Beulah, WY, for supper. Moses was impressed with the local trout and asked to meet the owner of the property where the fish were raised. Moses met with Frank LaPlante the next morning and offered to buy his property. Frank set a price of $27,000, and Moses pulled that much cash from his pocket to purchase it on the spot. The 650 acres that he purchased were unimproved. Moses saw potential for a summer retreat amid an area that resembled the area in Germany that he had immigrated from. 34

Annenberg purchased more land to the total of 2000 acres. He set crews at work to build the lodge, caretaker’s residence, a barn, several guest cabins, a 10 mile long game fence to encircle the entire property, and two stone arches to mark the entrances to the property. He hired craftsmen who used old world techniques to do the building with the emphasis to be the showcase lodge. Furnishings and decorations for the lodge were manufactured and selected by Thomas Molesworth. It was the first major project for Molesworth, and one that started his illustrious career. The majority of the original Molesworth furnishings made for Ranch A are now the property of the State of Wyoming and are located in the Wyoming State Museum. Moses intended the property as a vacation home for his family, but his wife and daughters only came to Ranch A one time. Moses and Walter continued to use the property, and shared it with guests. Guests arrived by train, on cars owned by Annenberg, and were picked up in Aladdin

where the train line ended. Local rumor includes notorious crime figures among the guests. Trunk phone lines were installed in the basement of the lodge to accommodate the Daily Racing Form and bookies wires. After twelve years of ownership, Annenberg lost the property to the Federal Government as partial settlement in a dispute with the IRS. He was convicted of income tax evasion and sentenced to Federal Prison in Lewisburg, PA. He was released shortly before his death in 1942. Much of the history of the Annenbergs in Wyoming is based on memories of local residents. Accounts vary greatly on most issues. The next owner of the property was former Wyoming Governor, Nels Smith. He purchased the land in 1942 and during his tenure, Ranch A became a guest ranch. National Geographic Magazine included pictures and information about Ranch A in “Back to the Historic Black Hills, October, 1956. By 1963, the US Fish and Wildlife Service had gained the title to Ranch A. The lodge was remodeled for office spaces, a lab for fish genetic programs was built,
and the Molesworth furnishings were, for the most part, relegated to storage. In 1979, Ranch A became a part of the Spearfish Fisheries Center Complex. Hatchery facilities were closed for good in 1986. Federal Legislation deeded the property to the State of Wyoming in 1996, with the stipulation that it must be used for educational purposes. Ranch A Restoration Foundation (founded in 1992) has had management of the property since that time.
A and is a conversion from the original garage and caretaker’s quarters. It was designed and built as a small replica of the Lodge with capability of year-round usage and has an exceptionally large area for meetings, workshops, or demonstrations. The meeting room is designed with features for internet access, with lighting and outlets to allow utilization for sewing or quilting projects, as well as classroom type of instruction. Because the Lodge at Ranch A is on the National Registry of Historic Places, changes may not be made. This means that the upper level of the Lodge can not be made handicapped accessible. There is a bedroom and half bath on the lower level, but does not meet modern standards for wheelchair access. Those with bad knees will appreciate being able to stay on the first floor. The Pete Smith Cabin has meeting areas that are accessible for day use, but physically
impaired accessible lodging and restroom facilities are not available. The property is approximately 645 acres in size. The terrain is varied with steep canyon walls, gentler slopes, and semi level canyon bottom. Elevations range from 3,780 ft. to 4,475 ft. A county road runs through the property. You can enjoy hiking on Ranch A grounds and the adjacent Black Hills National Forest lands. There is no swimming pool or tennis court, but you can wade in the creek and enjoy horseshoes and volleyball. Sand Creek runs through the property. The creek sustains fish and other aquatic life, provides recreation and scenic value, and is a source of drinking water for wildlife and livestock. You may encounter cows while you are enjoying the Ranch A facilities. They are part of the Hazard Reduction Fire Suppression Plan administered by the State of Wyoming. The cattle eat, and the grounds get groomed, reducing the potential fuel for fires. Birds, turkeys, deer, elk, antelope, mountain lions, and other wild critters may be watched on the grounds. There is no hunting allowed but fishing is allowed on Sand Creek with a valid Wyoming License and is considered a world class fly-fishing stream. ∑

Celebrants and shoppers annually spend billions of dollars during the holiday season. With so much money exchanging hands, it is imperative for shoppers and revelers to use caution to avoid incidents that can put a damper on such a festive time of year. Though many people look forward to the holiday season for all the right reasons, there are some who see this time of year as a prime opportunity to prey on the generosity or distraction Christmas brings. Thieves know that the holidays can be hectic, and they use this to their advantage, knowing full well people tend to store high-priced items in their homes during this time of the year. Heeding certain safety tips during the holidays can help keep you and your loved ones safe.
Stagger shopping times Being a creature of habit may not be advantageous come the holidays. Oftentimes, potential burglars monitor neighborhoods to see when residents come and go. It can take mere minutes for a thief to get into a home and then abscond with valuables. Creating a situation where there is always someone home or at least the appearance that someone is home might dissuade a thief from targeting your home. When you venture out to shop, do so at different times so you’re not establishing a recognizable pattern that gives a thief a sense of security and a perfect window of time to break in.
Triple-check your home Security experts warn that most burglaries occur during daytime hours when homes are empty. The main point of entry is on the ground floor via a rear or a side door. Access through a garage door is another common way thieves gain access to a home. Before leaving the house, make sure that all doors and windows are locked and that the garage door cannot be opened. Many times thieves are able to simply enter a home through an unlocked window. The key is to make it as difficult as possible for a burglar to get inside your home. Running out of the home for parties, shopping and other social events could derail safety precautions. If need be, leave a checklist by the front door to remind you to safeguard the home before exiting.

Park in well-lit areas Cars are prime targets for burglaries. Many times shoppers visit the car frequently during shopping excursions and store gifts in the trunk, only to return for more shopping. Thieves recognize there may be a bounty of merchandise inside. First and foremost, all items in the car should be stored out of sight to deter interest in your vehicle. Secondly, make sure that the car is locked and that the security system (if there is one) is engaged, as merchandise in a car is not often covered by standard auto insurance policies. In addition, park as close as you can to the store entrance or beneath a bright light. Poor visibility encourages thieves.
NOVEMBER 2013
Watch your wallet Cash is a very attractive prospect for thieves because it is largely untraceable and easily spent. While shoppers who want to curb high credit card bills might favor cash, it is important not to carry too much around. Spread out purchases over a few days so that you do not have to carry large quantities of cash. When using an ATM at the mall or at the bank, always be aware of your surroundings, including fellow customers. It may be worth paying multiple service fees to withdraw small amounts of cash rather than withdrawing a large amount of money that thieves can target. Remove extraneous credit cards when shopping. Should your wallet be stolen or go missing, this will eliminate the number of accounts that thieves can use and also cuts down on the number of accounts that need to be closed out. You should never carry your social security card in your wallet because this increases your risk of being victimized by identity theft. Request to sign for packages Many shipping carriers have eliminated the need for package recipients to sign for merchandise. Recipients can now choose to have boxes and bags left outside the front door. To decrease the risk of theft, always choose to sign for packages, regardless of how safe your neighborhood may be. ∑

Improve Indoor Air Qu uality a Before Winter Arrives Garbage Disposal Unit Is Jammed Q: I have a food disposer in the kitchen sink that came with the house. Yesterday while grinding up some food, it just stopped working. Does it need to be replaced? -- Carmen in Albuquerque, NM A: Food disposers are very reliable appliances, but if they’re underpowered they may be prone to jamming or, when under a heavy load, will shut off. Turn the disposal switch on the wall to the on position. Do you hear a humming sound, but no grinding? Or do you hear no sound at all? If you hear a humming sound, it’s likely that the grinder is jammed. Turn the switch off, and then turn off power to the disposal at the main circuit panel. Now, open the sink cabinet and look underneath the disposer. You should see a reset button and possibly a small round hole or slot in the center of the unit. The slot is likely an access point for the impeller. It’s accessed with a small handheld wrench (like the Allen wrench that often comes with assemble-yourself furniture), which hopefully is stored on or near the unit. Insert the wrench into the impeller slot and turn it clockwise to try and unjam the unit. To see if it worked, turn power to the unit back on at the circuit panel. Then climb under the cabinet again, locate the reset button and push it. Go up to the power switch and turn it on. The grinder should operate again. What if you can’t locate a wrench or an access slot for the impeller? You could always try my mother’s favorite fix. Turn off power at the circuit panel, then grab something with a wooden handle, like a broomstick or plunger. Insert the handle into the disposal from the top, place it against one of the blades, and try to turn it clockwise. Then reset the unit as above and test. If neither method works, turn off power to the unit again and look inside the disposal to see if anything is blocking the blades, like a metal utensil or a large object like a bone or avocado seed. Carefully remove any such object and test again. And if all else fails, you may need to replace the entire unit. If so, look for one that has a motor with at least 1/2 horsepower, overload protection and a self-reverse feature to reduce jamming. HOME TIP: To keep your disposal smelling clean, grind up a few lemon or lime peels in it periodically. 40

With fall soon to give way to winter, many people will soon be spending more time indoors. Winter weather can be harsh, and it can be difficult for fresh air to make its way into a home once the warmer temperatures of summer and fall give way to the cold days of winter. Poor indoor air quality can cause multiple problems. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, poor indoor air quality can increase a person’s risk of developing pneumonia, and it also may aggravate existing respiratory conditions such as asthma. The EPA also notes that long-term exposure to indoor air pollution can increase a person’s risk for heart disease, respiratory diseases and even cancer. Because indoor air pollution can be so devastating, many homeowners look for ways to improve their indoor air quality, especially before the arrival of winter, when residents of the home figure to spend such a significant amount of time indoors. Fortunately, homeowners can take many steps to do just that. Clean with soap and water. Soap and hot water can still clean a home effectively, and this age-old combination might be the healthiest way to clean as well. Many household cleaning products contain potentially harmful ingredients that can introduce toxins and irritants into a home. Avoid such cleaners and solvents when cleaning a home. If stains prove too stubborn for soap and water, be sure to open windows when using potentially harmful cleaners indoors. Purchase an air filtration system. Air filtration systems vary significantly in size, cost and function. Some systems are designed to remove specific pollutants, and may not be effective at removing additional indoor air pollutants. Larger models tend to be most effective at filtering pollutants like dust, but such units are more expensive than smaller units. If your home is especially dusty, then a large filtering system may prove a worthy investment. Open windows and doors when

possible. Introducing outdoor air into a home is a great way to improve indoor air quality. Of course, opening windows and doors might not be feasible in the middle of winter. But take advantage of any such opportunities when they present themselves. For example, after cooking a big meal, open the kitchen exhaust fan to allow fresh air into the home. Such fans are not large enough to cause a significant temperature drop in the home, but they can directly remove contaminants from inside the home, like those that might be emitted from gas stoves. Insist guests and residents remove their shoes. Chemicals can find their way into a home in a variety of ways, and you and your fellow residents or guests may be tracking them into your home on your shoes. Keep a doormat inside all entryways, and insist guests and residents remove their shoes before entering your home. This reduces the amount of potential pollutants brought into your home and also makes cleaning the home that much easier. Break out the mop. Vacuum cleaners can be effective at picking up pollutants inside a home, but they also can leave things behind. When a vacuum cleaner seems to be leaving some dust behind, take out the mop and, with just a little water, address the areas where dust is still lingering. Water should be enough to do the trick, and, unlike some cleaning products, water won’t be introducing any additional harmful pollutants into the home. Smoke outside. Smoking inside a home is inviting trouble, especially during those times of year when the windows cannot be opened. Secondhand smoke is a significant source of indoor air pollution, as cigarette smoke is known to contain more than 4,000 chemicals. Smoking indoors, whether an area is well- or poorly-ventilated, can be dangerous to smokers. Exposure to secondhand smoke puts adults and children alike at risk of several diseases, including asthma and cancer. If you or your fellow residents or visitors must smoke, do so outdoors.
