HAWKSBILL ESTATE Conceived as a multi-generational beachside family estate, Hawksbill Estate is extravagant in size but personal in detail. Words by Natasha Were.
ringed on one side by the pristine sands of Grace Bay, Providenciales, and on the other by a canal, Hawksbill Estate hunkers down between sea grapes and coconut palms, its low profile belying the fact it houses eight bedrooms and sport and leisure facilities worthy of a wellness resort. RL RL
For the owners, a Chicago-based couple with six grown-up children and a growing brood of grandchildren, creating a vacation home that could comfortably accommodate the whole family and cater to their active lifestyles was inevitably going to mean thinking big. The conundrum was how to go big, without losing intimacy.

To help solve the puzzle, the couple hired TCI-based architecture and interior design firm Coast, to help them create what would turn out to be a main house with five bedrooms, a standalone master suite for the owners and a separate two-bedroom guest house. "It was important to us that the design fit into to the surroundings, so instead of one huge house, we designed a series of low-rise buildings, that allow privacy and a degree of independence for all,"the owners explain.

"It also means that we can shut off the parts that are not in use when it’s just the two of us, and just use the den, kitchen and master suite." Because the whole family are self-confessed health and fitness fiends, the home had to include a gym, tennis court and basketball court, a lap pool for the husband, and a chef’s kitchen large enough for the family to cook together, all in addition to ample accommodation.

Having a keen interest in architecture and design themselves – she dabbles in interior décor projects at home, he is involved in the commercial side – the owners were deeply involved in every decision, down to the selection of doorknobs and fabrics. As well as replicating inspiring ideas they found in magazines and books – such as the distinctive walnut staircase that appears to float in front of a natural stone wall and the bathroom courtyard, where an oval tub sits under an open sky with a window onto a picture postcard view they incorporated many features that had personal meaning for them. A freeform live edged headboard in one bedroom and the coffee table that sits under soaring timber ceilings in the centre of the vast, airy great room, were both cut from a felled walnut tree on another of the owner’s properties. The kitchen, where a single gleaming slab of hardwood forms the island countertop, is a copy of their kitchen at home and the square stone table on the screened-in terrace (“A square table is just so conducive to conversation,” they enthuse) had been on their wish list for years. The genius of the design is that, despite the scale, it maintains a sense of continuity and warmth. By using the same flooring throughout and matching bathroom cabinets, there is a coherence and unity to the overall design, while features such as the cluster of pendant lights that hang in the centre of the great room fill what might otherwise have been too large a space. An emphasis on natural materials and an eclectic mix of antique mirrors,
unusual wall coverings, sea-themed decorative features and locally commissioned artwork all add warmth, texture and personality to each space. With eye-catching details and inviting nooks scattered across the five-acre estate, the challenge now is choosing which spot to savour: the day bed in the centre of the pool, the fire pit on the beach, or the snug family room with its unique curved couch?

Completed in February 2015, Hawksbill Estate was no small undertaking, especially given the international nature of the project. The spirit of collaboration between architects, interior designers and owners, however, was the highlight. "It seems that whatever idea we had, they took it and made it better," the owners say. Now, having had three years to live in and enjoy the space, they can safely say there is not a single detail they would change.

he generous proportions and ingenious configuration of this waterfront property ensure that all four bedrooms, as well as the office, kitchen, living and dining rooms look out onto tranquil canal views, whilst also providing a private inner courtyard that is the social and entertainment hub of the home. Designed in a C-shape, the entryway, office, media room and garage are located along the road-facing side. The kitchen, dining and living room face in towards the courtyard, thereby creating a privacy barrier from the neighbours. The bedrooms are arranged along the canal side on the second storey, to form a bridge over the pool that is supported by the living room on one side and the guest
suite on the other. This was a concept the owners, Julie and Lee, had sketched out with Julie’s sister, architect Cindy O’Hara, to take advantage of the cooling trade winds and water views. The courtyard takes outdoor living to an entirely new level with: a perimeter overflow pool with a tanning ledge that stretches out towards the canal, a gazebo that shades an outdoor kitchen, bar and waterproof flat screen TV, and lounge areas that surround a fire pit and a fountain that spills into the pool. North easterly breezes flow through the courtyard, with the bridge creating a Venturi effect that further increases airflow, whilst the second storey shields it from the direct sun in the afternoons, giving the owners a private, cool, shady outdoor space. Although Julie and Lee had a basic concept in mind and knew that they wanted the clean lines of a contemporary home, it was Design Cayman Ltd., and architect Alan Brown in particular, who refined their ideas. His designs incorporated: a central axis with a continuous line of sight from the front entry across the pool to the canal, different elevations and varying roof lines to add visual interest and a separation of spaces, allowing the soaring double height dining room to have a very different ambience to that of the living room, with its grey coffered ceiling and grid of white rafters. Similarly, the vaulted ceilings in the master bedroom suite lend it an air of luxury, the French doors open onto the balcony giving them panoramic views of the canal while the picture windows look out towards North Sound.

The family home is brimming with ingenious features such as: a custom master closet that includes a home gym and 50” TV, a media room with state-of-the-art A/V equipment from Creative Tech, complete with an 85” TV, 13-speaker surround sound system, a candy concession stand and popcorn machine and to optimise space, a wine bar and a bed for their three dogs tucked under the stairs in the dining room.
To ensure their vision translated into reality, the owners collaborated closely with the architect and general contractor, Wendel Construction Ltd., on every aspect of the design and construction process. They took on the interior décor and furnishings themselves sourcing products from international suppliers, as well as local vendors such as ITC, IDG, Absolutely Fabulous and Edie’s Décor, for tiles, fixtures, furniture, lights and window treatments.

Architecturally, the design is described as ‘tropical modern’ so when it came to defining the interior style, the owners chose to carry that concept through every space in the home. “We wanted everything streamlined and didn’t want anything obstructing our efforts to create this very open concept,”Julie explains. From the glass balcony railings that allow uninterrupted views from the bedrooms to the lowprofile furniture, every detail maintains a sense of clarity and understated elegance allowing the lush landscaping and water views to dominate. To soften the expanses of concrete and glass and bring a touch of the tropics indoors they introduced natural materials: Brazilian hardwood ceilings under the bridge and over the patio, a rustic wooden dining table, fabric-upholstered chairs, leather sofas and for a colour pop blue-glazed ceramic pots.

Equally simple and unembellished, the interior colour scheme of varying shades of soft grey provides a soothing contrast to the vibrant outdoors. “We call it the house of 100 shades of grey,” they joke. “We like cooler tones, they work well with the natural wood, blue and white accents.” Lighting, they say, was their biggest challenge of all, and although the custom-designed dining room chandelier – a cascade of round globes suspended from near-invisible wires – fills the space perfectly, finding light fixtures that were both energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing was a struggle.

As they were building their forever home, the owners wanted to use sustainable features and the latest technology where possible. This includes a solar array, a rainwater cistern for irrigation, hurricane rated LoE windows and doors, Haiku smart ceiling fans and LED lighting. All of this is complemented by a state-of-the-art security system and a Control4 home automation system for peace of mind and ultimate relaxation whilst home or away.

Bringing all the elements together, ensuring supplies arrived on time and the build stayed on schedule was a huge undertaking, decisions had to be made quickly and the logistics were often challenging. Ultimately, Julie and Lee have achieved, in record time, every objective they had in mind. It took a great deal of research, planning and dedication but the homeowners feel that the final result was an accomplishment of their vision to make their dream home a reality. RL

ocated on a tranquil canal with far reaching views down the waterway, Linger Longer is a warm and welcoming home that was designed around the owners’ lifestyle. Being avid boaters and fishermen, a canal front lot was key to keeping their boat close at hand; beyond that, being able to indulge in their love of cooking and entertaining was a priority. This meant a large chef’s kitchen, a barbecue area and enough
space, indoors and out, to gather comfortably with friends. Plus, the owners wanted a Caribbean-style home and it had to be economical to cool. Working closely with architect and LEED consultant Stace McGee, the design they ultimately settled on was a single storey, three-bedroom home featuring a square floor plan and a cupola, or clear storey, positioned above the heart of the home. Pitched roofs, clapboard siding and shady overhangs met the owners’ desire for a Caymanian aesthetic, but also allowed the architect to use time-tested traditional techniques to promote natural cooling: covered porches protect interiors from the direct sun, high ceilings allow hot air to rise away from the occupants and the cupola, positioned above the kitchen, has remotecontrolled windows on all sides which let natural light pour in whilst simultaneously venting heat from the living spaces. Raised 11 feet above sea level, the house catches more of the breeze and is protected from dangerous storm surges. The addition of a breezeway between the front door and the garage, meanwhile, creates a Venturi effect, further increasing airflow and pulling warm air out of the house. Coupled with a highly insulated envelope and efficient air-conditioning units, the design has earned LEED gold certification, and utility bills are lower than the owners previously paid in a house less than half the size.

At 3,000 square feet, the dimensions are still relatively modest, but the easy flow between the kitchen, living and dining room, and multiple sets of glass doors connecting living spaces to the terrace and canal views, all contribute to light-filled interiors and a sense of spaciousness. Indoors, white painted beams and sloping ceilings combined with vivid splashes of colour lend an inviting Caribbean cottage feel. Just the right dash of modernity is created through a few carefully chosen contemporary pieces; such as, the distinctive Currey and Co. Chandelier over the dining table, wave-pattern bathroom tiles from ITC, island inspired window treatments by Edies’ Décor and a 9 x 5 pivoting front door. Acres of countertop provide ample prep space in the kitchen and small appliances and clutter are kept well out of sight thanks to Pooleys Cabinets’ storage solutions - pull out shelves, drawer systems and pop-up outlets.

After a successful fishing trip, however, the outdoor kitchen really comes into its own. Equipped with a barbecue, grill and smoker, seafood sensations can be whipped up as soon as they are brought ashore, whilst friends mingle around the pool. Linger Longer was neither built nor decorated with an unlimited budget and some tough choices had to be made as to where and when to spend a little extra on statement pieces and features that added that all important wow-factor. One such choice that may have gone over budget but was worth every cent was the Lightstream glass tiles that shimmer along the pool’s waterline in shades of gold, violet, green and blue. Designed by Oasis Pool & Spa and built by Pool Patrol, the result is, in the owners’ words, "ridiculously beautiful."

When that same wish list came to light during the construction process, they were delighted to find that every item on the list had been incorporated. A
new line of cutting edge home elevators offer a simple way to future proof your home and assist in overcoming mobility issues. Pneumatic Vacuum Elevators (PVE), available on island through Androgroup Elevator, are ingeniously designed to make them economical on space and energy consumption, and straightforward to install. PVE elevators are housed in a transparent, polycarbonate and aluminium cylinder that is powered not by cables or pistons but by air. Because the cylinder is self-supporting it eliminates the need for a pit excavation, hoistway or machine room, meaning the elevators can be retrofitted into existing homes almost as easily as they can be installed in new builds. The simplicity of the design means the entire installation can be completed in as little as three days and the low footprint of the cylinder – between 32 and 53 inches in external diameter, depending on the model – enables it to fit into spaces other elevators cannot. JOHN RYAN
John is the Vice President, Sales and General Manager, Professional Channel, Kitchen & Bath Americas of Kohler Co. He has been with Kohler Co. since 1989 starting as a Sales Trainee working with wholesale plumbing distributors in the northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., area. Since then he has held a variety of roles in general management, sales, marketing, sales training, and human resources. John grew up in Wisconsin and has a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from Marquette University. He is also a graduate of the Kohler Leadership Forum. Outside of work John is active in support of mental health issues and enjoys travelling the world, savouring a dirty martini, and every so often indulging in decadent chocolate.
RL: What is the essence of the Kohler brand? JR: That’s a very good question. I think it can be looked at in two ways: what we behind the brand feel and what our consumers perceive. W
hen engaged on a new design project the first thing an architect looks at is the optimal orientation of the building on the proposed site location: orientation should take into account sun patterns, natural breeze conditions, privacy concerns and of course the views. The importance of each of these design considerations cannot be overstated. All work to maximise energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve both humidity and comfort levels and reduce the operational cost of the building. No one likes expensive utility bills. By utilising conceptual design and taking advantage of correct building orientation, an architect can create a building that saves the owner money and, at the same time, reduces environmental impact. In hot, humid climates, the architect’s main goal is to minimise how much direct sun penetrates the building, thus decreasing the “heat gain” – that is, the transfer of heat into a building from the sun’s rays. The heat absorbed by the structure increases dramatically during the summer months as solar radiation intensifies. The best approach to decrease heat gain is to use quality window products, which include either tinted windows or low eminence glass that reflects long-wave infrared energy (or heat). Design consideration should also be given to the east-west orientations of the building as these sides have significant heat gain due to lower sun angles. Therefore, the most energy efficient design has a long axis with the narrowest elevations of the building facing east-west. This will decrease potential glare and over-heating sun conditions.

The use of large roofed terraces, overhangs, louvres, screens and above-window eyebrows will add to the shading components of a structure. It is also beneficial to make use of extensive landscaping to provide additional shade. Non air-conditioned spaces such as garages or covered terraces serve as buffering or insulating zones and will minimise direct solar admission into a building. An architect will study the sun’s patterns and suggest the best placement of these spaces. Should the owner of a building decide to install solar panels, the roof orientation must also be taken into account. To work most efficiently, solar panels should not be shaded by higher roofs, adjacent walls or trees. A flat roof provides an ideal condition allowing a 5 to 10 degree angle on each solar panel which leads to maximum absorption from the sun. Thus, a south-west orientation of solar panels will be advantageous to match solar production and your electrical needs. Consideration should also be given to prevailing winds: the use of well thought out cross ventilation combined with external breezeways will allow natural airflow into interior and exterior locations. Of course, the greatest design criterion of all, especially for an oceanfront property, is capturing the natural views while maintaining the practical considerations mentioned to create an amazing looking building.

THE MILLENNIAL APPROACH By Georgie Loxton, CFA, Wealth Advisor with International Financial Planning Ltd.
he poor millennial generation: they get a bad name. They are the ‘selfie generation’ – lazy, entitled and selfish are just some of the words used to describe them. By 2025, they will represent 75% of the US workforce, so whatever the older generations think of them, they are going to be a force to be reckoned with. The millennial attitude to money, savings and investments, is going to shape the future of many financial services companies and perhaps the stock market itself. But maybe millennials are unfairly receiving a bad rap. Their attitude to money is often surprising – and inspiring. They place great emphasis on purpose and mission, they are much more interested in spending money on experiences than on acquiring ‘things’, they realise that it’s relationships not money that makes them happy and they are disciplined, diligent savers focused on the long-term. There are plenty of professionals in their latetwenties and early-thirties who have saved up very large sums of money. Financial freedom really means something to them – they don’t want to wait until they retire to live their dream. The research and data on this cohort’s attitude to money is revealing. A 2017 study by Nerd Wallet found that 38% of employed millennial parents contribute more than 15% of their annual income to retirement funds, compared with 24% of Gen X and 23% of Boomers. A Bank of America survey reported than one in six millennials had at least $100k in total savings, which suggests a strong sense of financial responsibility at a fairly young age. RL
Another study that surveyed over 1,000 affluent Americans revealed that almost 40% of respondents between the ages of 18 and 34 said they save upwards of half their paychecks. These are amazing statistics that would make many Gen X’ers and Baby Boomers envious. The explanation may be that millennials have watched their parents rely on pension funds and housing wealth, they have witnessed a general lack of preparation for retirement and they are concerned that they may have to support their parents later in life. This would give millennials a totally different mindset around money. Baby boomers ‘had it easy’. For millennials, accumulating wealth is not going to be so straightforward - and they know it. Although they might be the most frugal generation since the Great Depression, millennials have only recently become interested in the stock market. Many came of age right around the financial crisis. Watching the market fall a cool 50% in your formative years shapes your view of the stock market for life. According to a WellsFargo report 70% of respondents were sceptical of ‘stock market experts’ following the crash. As a result, many millennials have missed out on the four-fold increase in the markets since the bottom of the financial crisis. Baby Boomers, on the other hand, experienced the greatest bull market of all time in the 80's and 90's. During that period they saw the S&P 500 go from around 100 to 1500. There were a few crashes along the way (1987, 1990-91, 1998), but they were short and the market recovered quickly. The boomers know the mantra ‘stay the course’ but the millennials haven’t had a chance to learn that yet.
However, the millennials have a lot on their side. Due to the explosion of ETFs (exchange traded funds), investing today is cheaper and easier than it has ever been. Millennials are the first generation to be able to easily invest in line with their values - something that is important to them. Socially responsible investing is more accessible today than it was a decade ago and you don’t have to sacrifice returns in order to include environmental, social and governance factors. But most importantly, millennials have time! They have decades ahead of them in which to watch the power of compounding work its magic. The key challenge for millennials is going to be navigating the endless investment options and finding a way to ignore the constant ‘noise’ from the internet (and well-meaning older generations). Education around personal finance has not improved and millennials, perhaps more than any other generation, need to understand that over the long-term, cash is risky and stocks are safe. The millennial generation gives us cause to feel optimistic about the future. They genuinely care about the greater good, they want to leave the world a better place and they have a huge amount of economic power. If they have financial security they will have the freedom not just to dream, but to take action to change the world.

uite when skilled artisans in Iran, India, Afghanistan and Turkey first began to weave fine threads into beautiful floor coverings is not known, but the rugs produced in these eastern lands have been traded around the world for centuries. Woven on upright looms, with every knot meticulously tied by hand – a good quality rug has between 100 and 400 knots per square inch and it takes months, if not years, to complete a rug. The final product though, is a work of art in its own right. Of course, one can purchase a mass-produced rug for a fraction of the cost of a genuine oriental rug, but the cheap-and-cheerful synthetic versions are simply no match in terms of quality, durability or environmental sensitivity. Hand woven rugs are made from 100% silk or wool, coloured with natural, nontoxic dyes, are easily washable and incredibly hard-wearing.
OLD RUGS, NEW HOMES Oriental rugs are inherently traditional in pattern and colour, but do these age-old designs have a place in contemporary Caribbean homes? “People often think that a modern home requires a modern rug,” Diana Quin of Rugs Oriental observes. “But traditional pieces can look equally at home in a contemporary house or office.” Cold floors may not be an issue in a tropical climate, but a rug still lends an additional layer of warmth and texture to a room and is gently soundproofing by absorbing the echoing of hard heels on stone floors. In minimalist, modern interiors a traditional rug can bring colour and pattern into what might otherwise be a bland, featureless space. or go the other way and look for the muted tones of an antique rug, to add a soft air of faded grandeur. Whether it’s the starting point of the design or something chosen later to fit into it, by matching the colours of a rug to the pillows, drapes and accessories, a well-chosen rug really ties a room together.

e all know that time spent in nature is deeply therapeutic, so it’s only logical that bringing a bit of the outdoors in will also have beneficial effects. Potted plants add a living element to a space that makes it feel fresh and alive, whilst also creating a sense of calm. But more than that, plants enhance the very air we breathe. Think of a steamy jungle or a cool, damp forest; plants are natural humidifiers, softening the air and replacing some of the moisture that air-conditioning systems remove. More importantly, perhaps, for our increasingly tightly sealed homes, plants are great air purifiers. Through a process known as phytoremediation, house plants absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen and also filter out harmful toxins like cigarette smoke, VOCs, benzene and formaldehyde – often causes of allergic reactions and conditions like asthma. HOW TO BRING THE OUTDOORS IN An easy, no-mess way of creating your indoor garden is the pot-in-pot method: choose a series of planters or ceramic pots

in attractive and complementary colours and shapes. Your potted plants simply pop into the containers, no re-potting required. When the plant reaches the end of its natural life, or outgrows its pot, remove it just as easily and, if space permits, replant it outdoors. WAYS TO ENHANCE INTERIORS WITH GREENERY Unless you have an atrium or courtyard, houseplants are often an afterthought in the interior design scheme, but that doesn’t mean your interiorscaping – the indoor version of landscaping – can’t vastly enhance a space. Use tall plants with soft fronds or large, broad leaves to fill empty corners, frame doorways or, if grouped together, act as room dividers. Bushier, flowering plants work well as centrepieces on small or large tables, or group a variety of small plants with different shaped leaves and tones of green together to create a feature on empty surfaces. Trailing plants like ivy or certain vines are ideal for growing in hanging baskets or placing on high shelves that allow the foliage to cascade downwards.
The repeating patterns and almost geometric shapes of cacti and succulents work especially well against the clean lines and simple forms of ultra modern spaces, while the long, elegant stem and extravagant form of an orchid adds a stylish pop of colour to all-white, minimalist interiors. Green or living walls are becoming a common exterior design feature but why not replicate this concept indoors? A green wall filled with aromatic herbs in the kitchen puts them close at hand, whilst subtly perfuming the air. PLANT CARE Other than positioning plants according to their need for direct or indirect sunlight, occasional watering, every one to two weeks, is all that is required. More often than this and you risk over-watering. Feel the soil first, if it is still moist don’t water. A plant will recover much better from under watering than over-watering.

Easy Greenery CHAMAEDOREA PALMA Also known as the parlour palm, it has all the attractions of a palm, but in pint size.
POTHOS A trailing vine with heart shaped green or variegated leaves, it is one of the easiest plants to grow. WARNECKII Hailing from Africa this member of the Dracaena family has striking green and white striped leaves and can be grown as a bush or a cane. AGLAONEMA Also known as Chinese evergreens, these decorative plants don’t like direct sun, so are ideal for indoors.
ZAMIOCULCAS A tropical perennial plant native to eastern Africa, the glossy green leaves are excellent air purifiers.
SANSEVIERIA With long pointed leaves that grow straight upwards, these plants can add visual drama and geometric shape.
RUBBER PLANT With dark green, glossy round leaves this makes a popular ornamental plant for many situations.
PHILODENDRONS Available in climbing and non-climbing varieties these plants are often the mainstay of indoor gardens.

Piet Boon
The work of influential Dutch designer Piet Boon, whose ‘total concept’ designs encompass architecture, interiors, furniture and more, is turning heads around the world, including the Caribbean. Words by Natasha Were
or carpenter turned globe-trotting designer, Piet Boon, the common thread that runs through his considerable body of work is balance: it’s all about balancing beauty and functionality, simplicity and sophistication. Characterised by subdued colour schemes, minimalist forms and the use of natural materials, particularly wood and stone, Boon’s designs have, from the beginning, been endowed with a timeless quality – both in the sense that they are immune to changing trends and that they are created with longevity in mind. In addition to designing cars, boats, wallpapers and, most recently kitchens, Boon has brought his distinctive style to bear on a dizzying array of projects across the world, from luxury penthouses in New York City to hotels in Vietnam and Vegas, and villas in Portugal, Saudi Arabia and the Caribbean. As a child, Boon says, his dream was to own a huge construction company. Having cut his teeth in the carpentry world, he moved on to contracting, but once his ambition became reality, he says, the dream lost its lustre. RL

“In that line of work, you are always realising the designs of others and I found I was often having to implement ideas that sounded good on paper but didn’t work in practice. Or did work, but looked terrible.” Sensing he could do better, in 1983 he began creating tailor made interiors for private homes himself - and thus Studio Piet Boon was born. As the team has grown, the studio’s scope has expanded to offer a full concept service, designing the exteriors, interiors, product lines and styling. It’s an approach that enables him to create a seamless, cohesive whole, where every shape and detail works in harmony, endowing each project with continuity and equilibrium. Although his roots are in the Netherlands and his work takes him east and west, his heart, he says, is in Bonaire, an island he has been visiting for 25 years. “Bonaire is not beautiful in the way other islands are, because it doesn’t have the endless sandy beaches,” he says. “But it’s the simplicity of it that I love. There are no high-rise buildings and no traffic lights. It’s just very laid back.” Given his affinity for clean, uncomplicated aesthetics, Bonaire may be his ideal canvas and the 23 villas he has designed there give full expression to his unmistakable style: lofty ceilings allow the breeze to flow through, stone floors are cool underfoot RL
and the interior palette of soft greens and greys is inspired by the local cactus and aloe vera plants. Sturdy, comfortable furniture invites relaxation within the whitewashed interiors with occasional pops of colour from throw cushions, works of art and personal keepsakes injecting just the right amount of Caribbean flair. The sun, salt and wind can be harsh partners in a tropical climate, therefore when designing for the Caribbean Boon chooses durable natural materials – teak, cedar and coral – that not only withstand the elements, but will weather and colour beautifully over time, with no maintenance required. Boon is now bringing his commitment to longevity and sustainability to bear on a new Caribbean development, Pearns Point in Antigua. A pristine peninsula with seven beaches, it will ultimately feature 67 luxury beach and hillside homes, all designed in such a way that the ecological impact is minimised, durability is maximised, and the visual effect, both close up and from a distance, is delightfully easy on the eye. The same elegant design traits are recognisable throughout Boon’s projects, whether hospitality projects or collaborations with big name brands. But beyond his focus on creating lasting, timeless designs, what sets Boon apart from the crowd is that his work is conceived not only to look sensational, but also to be used, lived in and enjoyed.

A
well-stocked home bar is a grown-up rite of passage. Gone are the days of serving vodka that’s been in the back of your freezer for years or a random bottle of wine you got as a gift. Even if your current residence can’t accommodate a full-scale libation station, a bar cart kitted out with the tools of the trade means you can still perform some pretty impressive home mixology. Whether you like your cocktails shaken or stirred, there are a few staples no tipple trolley should be without. So what are the essentials and what can you do without? Consider this your barware basics 101.
TOOLS When it comes to crafting cocktails, you can have all the alcohol and mixers on the planet, but if you don’t have the gear, how are you supposed to properly execute the recipe? SHAKER: Most specialty cocktails require a shaker. Go pro with a Boston shaker – two stainless steel cups that fit into each other – or, if you can’t hold those comfortably, opt for a cobbler shaker, which has a lid with a built-in strainer. JIGGER: A jigger is a mixologist’s tool of choice for getting those precise half, one and two ounce measures right. And if it’s doubleended, even better. MUDDLER: Look for a dual-sided model — either wood or metal — with pointed teeth to crush or bruise fruits and herbs and let those flavours out. STRAINER: Look for a dishwasher-safe strainer that fits inside your shaker to strain cocktails directly into glassware.
STIRRER: Because not all drinks are shaken... For effortless, stylish stirring, whether in the glass or a pitcher, you’ll want a spiral-handled long bar spoon. CORKSCREW/BOTTLE OPENER: Save on space by buying a corkscrew with built-in foil knife and bottle opener. ICE BUCKET: Essential for housing, well, ice. When not in use though, it doubles as a cool container for your tools. TONGS: Skip the ice scoop. Tongs allow you to select individual ice cubes—including specialty shapes, like spheres and diamonds. ACCESSORIES: Put the finishing touch on masterful mixes with eco-friendly, re-usable straws, stylish coasters, coloured cocktail napkins, fruity garnishes or even edible flowers.
GLASSWARE A top-notch tipple demands a glass with class - but there’s no one glass to suit every libation. Be sure to keep these essential sippers on hand. HIGHBALL GLASSES: Also known as a Collins glass, the tall glass is your classic mixed drink vessel. Don’t go larger than 12 ounces or you’ll be on the floor. LOW BALL: Wide, squat, heavy-bottomed tumblers are the go-to choice for spirits served neat or over ice, and a must for an Old Fashioned. MARTINI GLASSES: Whether you like it dry or dirty, martini glasses are fun, flirty and fabulous. WINE GLASSES: In most cases, a standard set will do. But if you’re a connoisseur of a fullbodied Malbec or Cabernet, consider investing in separate glasses for red and white wine.
CHAMPAGNE FLUTES: Preserve those bubbles and keep hot fingers away from the cool fizz with fancy flutes.
THE WET GOODS Stock up with one of each of the key spirits - vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whiskey, and vermouth – and you’re golden. VODKA: A must for making everything from Moscow Mules to Bloody Marys. GIN: Because what’s better than a G&T or a Singapore Sling? TEQUILA: Sip it straight up, on the rocks, or in a classic Margarita. WHISKEY: Neat or not, rye or bourbon, you can’t entertain without it. RUM: Crucial for tropical tipples, from a sunny Daiquiri to a Dark & Stormy. VERMOUTH: A martini essential, choose sweet or dry, or go for both.
MIXERS Last but not least, line up a few mixers in pretty bottles, trick out your trolley with cocktail accessories and you’re well on your way to being the host with most. JUICE: Orange, grapefruit and cranberry will cover most bases. If you don’t have fresh, keep a few mini-bottles on hand in case of company. SODA: Stock up on plain soda, or seltzer, and flavoured varieties. TONIC: A few artisan tonics in funky bottles pair perfectly with premium gin. BITTERS: The concentrated flavour of bitters give any cocktail a little extra punch.

Tall and lush with glossy lobed leaves, the breadfruit tree is an intrinsic part of the Caribbean landscape - but its fruit is curiously under-utilised. Weighing in at up to 12lb apiece, the rough skinned green fruit is an unusual specimen in that it can be eaten at varying stages of ripeness with different results. When young and green, breadfruit is treated like a vegetable: it can be boiled then pickled for preservation and has a flavour similar to artichoke hearts. As the fruit matures, it becomes starchy and is handled much like a potato - baked, stewed, mashed or fried – this is when it tastes most bread-like. At its ripest, breadfruit becomes soft, sweet and creamy and can be enjoyed raw, like any other fruit. Because breadfruit trees grow fast and their yield is so plentiful, the fruit is being touted as a potential solution to food insecurity in tropical regions. Not only is it a good source of protein, starch, vitamins and minerals, but it is also an excellent source of gluten-free carbs. Breadfruit flour could soon find its way into cakes, pastas, and, well … bread.
BREADFRUIT GNOCCHI Recipe by Chef Kerryann Burnette of Lobster Pot, Grand Cayman
2 breadfruits, washed, peeled & quartered Salt & ground white pepper 1 egg, lightly whisked 2 cups plain flour 1/4 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese Plain flour, to dust Bring to the boil a saucepan with 3 cm of water on high heat Add breadfruit and reduce heat Cook for 10 minutes Transfer to a bowl and mash until smooth Season with salt and pepper Combine mash with the egg Add half the flour and Parmesan and stir Add the remaining flour slowly until a firm dough forms (If dough is too soft, add more flour) Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth Line a baking tray with nonstick baking paper Divide dough into 4 equal portions Roll 1 portion into a 2 cm-diameter log about 30 cm long Use a lightly floured knife to cut dough into 2 cm pieces Repeat with remaining dough portions Lightly flour your hands and roll each piece of dough into a ball Use your thumb to roll each ball over a floured fork Place on tray Bring a saucepan of salted water to the boil over medium heat Add one-quarter of gnocchi (don't overcrowd) Cook for 3 minutes or until they rise to the surface Use a slotted spoon to drain and transfer to a bowl Cover with foil to keep warm Repeat, in 3 more batches Serve and enjoy! The EFFERVESCENT Rosemary Parkinson The award-winning author and creative force behind a series of books on Caribbean culinary culture, Rosemary Parkinson is widely credited with putting the islands on the world foodie map. Words by Natasha Were
ig, beautiful and packed with colourful photographs, spirited stories and mouth-watering recipes, Parkinson’s books take readers careering around the islands on a joyous, vibrant adventure, told through the medium of food. When we speak she is taking a rare morning off, this time from photographing hummingbirds in the Trinidadian bush. Her energy and verve fizz and crackle down the line as the dizzying turns of her life unfold. Born in Venezuela to Trinidadian parents and raised in Barbados, Parkinson is no more able to say where she is from than she is to specify where she lives. At 71 she still hops from island to island, depending on where her latest project takes her, home being wherever she stands. What there is no doubt about is her passion for life, the Caribbean and the world of food. She’s never claimed to be a chef – she couldn’t boil water when she first married, she says – but as a Caribbean citizen, a love of food is in her DNA. “Every single person in the Caribbean is a foodie. We know everything about food,” she chuckles. “We’re always discussing food - and if anyone criticises our food we’ll jump up and down in outrage.”
Her first book, Shake dat Cocktail! came about as the result of a successful reggae bar she ran in Germany, for which she had created a menu of 100 Caribbean-inspired cocktails. When the bar closed as she was relocating to another city, she says, “I had all this information, so I thought, you know what? I’ll put it into a book.” That was 1992 and the start of her career in publishing. At the time, Caribbean cuisine was neither known nor appreciated abroad, but in the late 1990s Parkinson convinced a publisher to take a punt on an ambitious project, Culinaria: the Caribbean, a gastronomic journey through the islands of the Caribbean. “I don’t like the term cook book,” she says, “my books are more a look into island life. They cover history, tradition and celebrations. When people tell me stories I write them phonetically so you can hear them speak. Really, these books are like a movie.” To create Culinaria the publishers sent Parkinson and two photographers, all their equipment, thousands of rolls of film and endless notebooks, off on a six-month trip (all in all) around the Caribbean, from Bermuda to Venezuela, to document the food stories of each island. “I contacted the tourism agencies of each island beforehand and they usually had a list of places they wanted us to visit, but you know, I never completely listened to them… I have a way of meeting people along the way and they tell me about other people and before I know it I’m at a birthday bash at someone’s home.” Published in seven languages, Culinaria brought Caribbean cuisine out of the shadows and onto the world stage. That book led Parkinson to meet celebrated Chef Norma Shirley and to move to Jamaica in 2001. After several years there, she wrote, photographed and produced Nyam Jamaica, a parish-by-parish trip around the island, and in 2015 she published Barbados Bu’n-Bu’n, a four-volume extravaganza on her childhood home. It’s been a flamboyant journey, guided by intuition, propelled by passion and facilitated by serendipitous meetings. Friendships have been forged, discoveries made and a host of awards won, but none

of it came without a heavy dose of hard work and heartache. Repeated legal wrangles with publishers left her with either little financial compensation or no control over the final product, convincing her to self-publish her two most recent books. A brave and all-consuming undertaking, it’s one that comes with no pay-slip, so earning a living had to be fitted into the process. “I’ve had a lot of hardships but also a lot of fabulous times,” she says. “The hardships I just throw behind a door, close the door and forget about it. For me, everything is an adventure.” Winning the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s Special Recognition Award for raising the profile of culinary tourism in the region, ‘Best Design in The World’ for Nyam Jamaica and ‘Best Self Published Book in The World’ for Barbados Bu’n-Bu’n at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in 2009 and 2014 respectively has turned all the blood, sweat and tears into joy.

Her zest and energy seem unstoppable, and the almost childlike glee with which she approaches life has no doubt endeared her to all who have encountered her. “I wish I could live forever,” she gushes. “I just love it. I would like to roam this earth forever and ever. Oh my God – how could anyone think they could ever get bored on this earth? It’s just sooo amazing!”

Due Diligence Audits are performed by third parties who have a thorough understanding of aviation or marine operations. This ensures they will catch any questionable expenses (over-charges, illegitimate add-ons, mark-ups, improper invoices) that can result in owners paying 5% to 25% more than necessary. They are therefore particularly useful tools for owners who do not have accountants or tax consultants who are knowledgeable about the yachting or aviation industries. Audits also compare operations against similar sized aircraft or yachts for best practices, and are therefore critical to the proper management of your investment. By comparing your operations against other similar operations, you gain perspective and can better manage your costs, needs and expectations. Although published costs of operations (fixed and variable costs) are good for an apples-toapples comparison of aircraft or yacht types, they are not that accurate for how you use your aircraft or vessel. A useful audit should include a detailed analysis of expenses, such as: • Maintenance: including routine and heavy checks, reserves, scheduling, refurbishment and upgrades • Crew: salaries, benefits, vacations, schedules, etc. • Training

• Operations • Fuel Costs • Route Planning (outsourced) • Communication upgrades and subscription • Airport or harbour handling • Insurance • Navigation subscriptions • Storage: hanger, mooring, berthing • Crew accommodations and travel A thorough review should include: enough detail to reveal any patterns; confirmed facts to support any recommendations; areas of potential improvement; and highlight exceptional performance. The final report may well be an eye-opener for all readers, especially the financial team. A good report will show in full detail why current expenses and costs are where they are, and how they can be improved. Every operator’s savings will be different, but all will see savings as the details are flushed out. The accounting team should be fully involved in the audit and debriefing to understand the operations and finances involved. By learning how to review invoices, work orders and even insurance repairs, they will gain a better understanding of which charges are legitimate, and which should be questioned further before payments are made.

iving on an island, with the sea visible at every turn, the lure of the sea is one we all experience. Whether you’re already a boat owner, or dreaming of becoming one, you know that when the ocean calls, there’s no better way to experience it than on your own boat. There’s a lot to consider when purchasing, upgrading or maintaining your boat – but protecting your investment with insurance should receive the same consideration. When boat owners think of reasons to insure, potential hurricane or storm damage is always top of mind. Depending on where you moor your boat though, insurance coverage is also sometimes a legal requirement. When deciding what level of coverage is right for you, consider policies that provide comprehensive protection for your vessel and also provide peace of mind against threats such as theft, fire and collision. Covering your vessel alone is not quite enough though. You’ll also want liability coverage to protect yourself against third party risks such as damaging other boats/docks, swimmers and passengers. Most policies offer liability, but the standard limits vary by provider. Most importantly, when discussing insurance coverage for your boat with your insurance provider or broker, do talk about how your boat will be used. The everyday Rum Point and North Sound cruiser will have different needs to the fisherman or charter operator. Have an open discussion with your insurance company or broker, so that they can structure a policy to suit your needs. RL
In the event of an insured loss, your insurer will bear the responsibility for the repair costs or the replacement of your boat, depending on the extent of the damage. You will be asked to contribute to that cost through the payment of a policy deductible. Your deductible can vary depending on what level of precaution you take to reduce your exposure to certain risks. For instance, if your vessel is trailered and stored in a professional boat yard, some insurance companies will offer you a lower deductible as your chance of wind damage, sinking at the mooring and theft damage is reduced. Be sure you understand what you are protected against and whether you’ll be covered in the event of a loss. Additional covers you may also want to consider include: Navigational limit: some insurance companies will cover your vessel outside the normal territorial waters of the Cayman Islands. Non-emergency towing: coverage for the costs associated with getting to shore safely if you are stranded at sea. Salvage: coverage for the cost of raising your vessel, if it’s submerged, and moving it to a place of safety. Sun 101 Being sun safe doesn’t mean avoiding the outdoors completely – but it does mean taking sensible precautions. Cayman-based dermatologist Dr. Rebecca de Miguel shares her top tips for best all round sun protection. the right sunscreen for you
The choice of sunscreens out there is mind-boggling – so how do you choose the best one? The right one for you is not necessarily the best one for the next person. It depends on your skin type and sensitivity, so read the label – front and back – to be sure it contains all the good stuff and none of the bad.
What to look out for
CHEMICAL OR PHYSICAL: Both are effective but physical (or mineral) sunscreens cause fewer allergic reactions so are a better choice for children, pregnant women and people with sensitive skin. UVA + UVB: look for an SPF of 30 or higher for UVB protection, as well as the broad spectrum label for UVA protection. DOUBLE DUTY: Some sunscreens contain skin-repairing enzymes, so you can fix past blunders at the same time as protecting you from current overexposure. Sesderma and Isdin are good brands to look for. THE BAD GUYS: Avoid ingredients such as oxybenzone (causes allergic reactions), avobenzone (causes allergic reactions and is a known hormone disruptor) and methylisothiazolinone (a preservative that commonly causes contact dermatitis).
Apply correctly
PLENTY AND OFTEN IS THE KEY: A single application of sunscreen should be about a shot glass’s worth of cream. As the active ingredients break down in the sun, that amount should be reapplied every two hours and always after swimming. Chemical sunscreens aren’t effective for the first 20 minutes after application – so make sure you wait, as you’ll be totally unprotected until the science kicks in.
More than skin deep
You can nourish your skin’s natural defences from the inside out. Foods that are high in antioxidants can help enzymes repair damage from over exposure to the sun and boost your skin’s natural protection. Ramp up your intake of lycopene, betacarotene, vitamin C and omega 3s, by loading your grocery trolley with tomatoes, carrots, green tea, dark chocolate, green leafy vegetables, oily fish and walnuts. Take it a step further and add an oral antioxidant to your sun protection routine. Polipodium leucotomos is a leaf extract that reduces inflammation and free radicals induced by UV exposure. Just pop a tablet before a day out in the sun – but don’t forget the sunscreen.

Words by Natasha Were assed down from father to son for seven generations, House of Creed is a perfume house unlike any other. Celebrity endorsements are eschewed, advertising is rare and fragrances are only available through limited distribution channels - yet a list of illustrious celebrities, from politicians to stars of the silver screen, are among their loyal devotees. Winston Churchill, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly are just some of the public figures who have commissioned their fragrances, but House of Creed remains determinedly un-commercial, having only made its fragrances available to the general public since 1970. Founded by James Henry Creed in 1760, House of Creed began life as a London couturier, tailoring riding habits for the British nobility. Possessed of a highly developed nose, however, the astute founder created bespoke scents on the side, which he would gift to his most privileged clients. A FAMILY A FLAIR A family of talented artists, Eddie Minnis, his daughters, Nicole and Roshanne, and his son-in-law Ritchie, regularly exhibit together. Each has his own distinct style, technique and choice of subject matter, but together their body of work adds up to a vivid portrait of Bahamian life. Words by Natasha Were orn in Nassau and now based in Eleuthera, Eddie Minnis’ canvasses take a wide-angle look at life, depicting simple street scenes, historic buildings, land and seascapes. Although impressionist in style and painted in oils using a palette knife, each is meticulously precise: the product, no doubt, of his training in architecture – something that although he never pursued, Minnis says, instilled in him an appreciation for structure and perspective.
His depictions of tired clapboard cottages, flaming poinciana trees and bougainvillea-covered plantation-style houses, all shimmer with tropical sunlight and are infused with vibrant colours. As if alluding to a gentler time, however, there is a notable absence of the trappings of modern life in Minnis’ work: no telegraph poles, cars, or street signs. “Such things take away from the natural beauty of our environment,” he says. “I use my artistic licence to put utilities underground… and no parking is allowed on my streets.” RL

His two daughters, Nicole and Roshanne, both professional artists, clearly share their father’s talent. Whilst they credit him with guiding them in the use of different mediums and techniques, he did not, they say, push them to draw or paint, so much as expose them to the arts, take them to exhibitions and encourage them to discuss what they saw. Nicole, the eldest, did not seriously consider painting for a living until her last year in high school. Then, with no training other than distinction in GCE O’level art, she launched herself into the art world, quickly winning competitions and being offered a solo exhibition. Unlike her father, Nicole’s preferred subject matter is people and children in particular. Painting in oils without any thinning medium she captures candid glimpses of individuals, people absorbed in their own thoughts, whether resting in a doorway, playing with a doll or sweeping up leaves. “I think I gravitate to painting children because of their innocence,” she says. “Their expressions and the way they approach life have a way of touching your heart. It is this sentiment I try to recreate in my paintings.”

Roshanne too zooms in on the details of life and the people of the Bahamas, often with the translucent sea as a backdrop. Although her first love is pastels, she also paints in oils, using thin, delicate layers that allow her to capture reflections on the surface of the water. Her photorealistic depictions of humble island people, often hard at work, tell a whole story about who they are and the kind of lives they live. “But,” she says, “I also like to portray people doing nothing at all, where the whole story is told by their body language and facial expression.” Roshanne’s husband Ritchie Eyma, meanwhile, uses thick oils to create deeply atmospheric, impressionist interpretations of beaches and buildings, boats and people – the subject matter, he says, is not what is important for him. “What inspires me may be a certain colour, like the orange in ‘Marie’s Load’, or it could be an interesting composition. It’s the urge to create that keeps me painting.” Ranging from oils to pastels and places to faces, the Minnis family’s body of work as a whole is as richly coloured as it is varied. Sweeping across the islands from Abaco to Nassau and Exuma to Cat Island, each artist has found their own way to capture a mood, a landscape or a look. But if there is a common thread that ties their art together, it is their clear love and appreciation for the people and landscapes of their home, the islands of the Bahamas.
