or years before they purchased it, the owners had been coveting the empty lot at Cayman Kai, envisaging what they would build on that slice of paradise, if only it were theirs. Just steps from Rum Point, with its own white sand beach and sensational ocean views, they saw in their mindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye a sumptuous villa where their family and groups of friends could indulge both the simple joys of oceanfront living, and the aesthetic pleasures of an impeccably designed retreat. Tracey and Eric Kline of Encompass Ltd, who undertook every aspect of the design and build, knew that the key architectural challenges would be to make the most of the position by incorporating four full-frontal sea view suites (plus a kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; room and a ground floor suite for those of limited mobility) and to ensure plenty of shaded outdoor space where fair skinned guests could enjoy the balmy breezes without sizzling in the direct sun. “Achieving all that is really hard to do, especially on a lot that’s not overly wide,” says Tracey. “But we worked it to our best advantage by placing the two pavilion suites above either end of the pool.” Working in collaboration with John Zona & Associates of Jacksonville, Florida on the architectural drawings, they positioned the pavilion suites on stilts, one above the shallow bathing shelf of the pool, the other above the swim-up bar. This configuration enabled them to put windows on three sides of the suites, whilst

also extending the pool, installed by Pool Patrol, to 70’ and keeping the main outdoor lounging areas out of the sun. The other two ocean-facing suites were recessed on either side of the soaring, two-storey living area, ensuring no bedroom shared adjoining walls, for maximum privacy. Above these, the third floor terrace was built to capitalise on the sweeping views that take in Stingray City, Bio Bay and, of course, legendary sunsets. The extra elevation means it is even possible to spy individual turtles and rays gliding by.

On the lower level a multi-purpose space of dramatic dimensions features double height windows looking across the pool, beach, sea and sky. Spiralling off a central seating area, which is lit by a spectacular ‘Champagne chandelier’, is a bar with large screen TV for those unmissable matches, an ultra-modern kitchen designed by Pooley Cabinets, with appliances from Bon Vivant, and a glassed in dining area. “We knew the design had to be contemporary,” Eric says of the interior design, “but we didn’t want it to be stark or sterile. The home needed warmth and depth and colour – those muted sea colours that tie in with the ocean.” The feature from which the whole design concept of the living area takes its cue is, perhaps surprisingly, not so much the views as the Kauri wood floor tiles from ITC Tiles. All other decorative choices stemmed from the fluid patterns and tones of the flooring. RL

The Kline's had discovered this rare, ancient wood on a trip to New Zealand, and were not only instantly smitten with the story (it comes from trees that fell tens of thousands of years ago and have lain, preserved in swamps, ever since) but also with the distinctive grain. Kauri wood is so treasured it is not available commercially but when they found a porcelain tile inspired by it, in various shades of blue, grey and white, with hints of taupe, they knew they had to include it. Bringing in the ‘beachy’ aspect, without being twee or clichéd, Tracey admits, was a tough balance to strike. However, they collected a variety of carefully chosen pieces – a side table supported by a sculptural octopus, a Guy Harvey stingray swimming across an indigo background, a glow-in-the-dark bad-dream-eating shark in the children’s room, a thick slab of aquamarine illuminated Thinkglass for a bar counter – that all paid subtle homage to the ocean-side location.

A cornucopia of other unique design details were implemented with the help of Jack Lonetto from Floridabased The Decorators Unlimited – faux eel-skin wallpapers, negative space vanities and works of art that perfectly match the colours inside and out – all add up to a sophisticated but understated aqua-inspired interior. Needless to say, in such a sensational home, just as much care and consideration has been given to practicality and functionality as to visual appeal: a one-of-a-kind glass-fronted charging station keeps all digital devices in one place, custom made beds provide storage space beneath, and custom closets by Brand Source were ‘a godsend’ Tracey says, to minimise clutter and avoid marring sight lines. Even in the pool, a footrest has been added to the submerged stools for complete in-water comfort.

n the Exuma Cays, a string of 365 idyllic islands where footprintfree sands and gin-clear seas are the norm, privately owned, ultra-exclusive hideaways are not uncommon. But even among such exalted neighbours, there is one that stands out from the crowd. Only Over Yonder Cay can claim to offer world-class glamour, luxury and entertainment, all powered by the wind and sun.

A 72-acre island of undulating hills and sparkling beaches, Over Yonder Cay was acquired by the Bosarge Family Office in 2008. At the time a remote fishing outpost, it was initially developed for the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s private use, although it has since been made available for exclusive rentals. With four sumptuous villas accommodating up to 28 guests and every conceivable land- and water-based amenity on offer, it is the ultimate tropical playground.

The genius behind the island’s development is Dr ‘Ed’ Bosarge, an entrepreneur, financial whizz and avid sailor. It was while cruising through The Bahamas aboard his own yacht, SY Tenacious, that he happened upon this slice of paradise. Inspired by his experience on superyachts, he saw potential to take the total privacy, luxurious amenities and water-based fun that are the essence of the yachting experience, and recreate them on land.

The four villas, designed by Houston-based architect Mihai Angelescu, and positioned at different points on the island for maximum seclusion, each have a distinct style. The largest and most impressive is without doubt Meridian House, perched on the island’s highest point, taking full advantage of the commanding 360-degree views.

The exterior columns and courtyards are reminiscent of ancient Minoan architecture, but Angelescu has given it a contemporary interpretation with sleek lines, acres of glass, and a vast wraparound infinity pool. Interior designer Rodica Mirea balanced the sparseness of the exterior with a more ornate Rococo interior.

The focal point for social gatherings, Meridian Villa boasts ample indoor and outdoor dining and lounging areas, a 12-seat movie theatre and a spectacular glass-sided conservatory, where silk rugs, porcelain vases, crystal chandeliers and a grand piano all add timeless elegance to the light-filled space.

The four bedroom suites all have private gardens and sumptuous bathrooms, but it is the master suite that is truly swoon-worthy: a huge bedroom and living area are complemented with his and hers sea-view bathrooms, treatment rooms, sauna, steam room, gym and a dressing room, from which a spiral staircase leads up to a private viewing tower.

The other three villas are located closer to the shore, ensuring ocean vistas and private beach access for each. Designed and decorated for different tastes – one is inspired by traditional French elegance, another leans towards a bold, modern aesthetic, and the last is the quintessential bright and breezy beach house – each has different but equally appealing features, be it a multi-tiered pool, a games room, or a shady pavilion in which to while away a lazy afternoon. On land, entertainment options run the gamut from a nine hole, par three golf course and a floodlit tennis court to a beach volleyball court and nature trails, while for those who feel the call of the sapphire seas, there are dive, fishing and sail boats all berthed at the island’s private marina, and full complement of water toys for guests’ use.

But what sets Over Yonder Cay apart from other privately owned islands in the region is that amongst this extravagance of facilities stand three 140-foot wind turbines, a one-and-a-half-acre solar field and a state-of-the-art energy mission control room. A man with a penchant for finding solutions to the seemingly impossible, Dr Bosarge was determined to make the island a living laboratory for green energy. Ninety five per cent of the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s energy needs are currently generated by wind and sun, and the potential for harnessing tidal energy is being investigated. Lighting, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems are powered by renewable energy and any surplus is diverted to a desalination plant. The fresh water it produces is not only used for drinking and to irrigate the manicured gardens, but also feeds a hydroponic farm where fresh vegetables for the kitchen are grown. Turning a remote, uninhabited island into the lavish, sustainable RL

destination it is today did not come without its fair share of challenges. There were, of course, planning permits and work permits to obtain, and local building codes the US-based project managers had to adapt to. But aside from administrative challenges, it was the logistics of building on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean that proved to be the greatest hurdle: materials and machinery all had to be transported to the island by barge, with the ever-present threat of weather-related delays, and a 200-strong workforce had to be accommodated on-island for the duration of the three-year construction phase. To have achieved this transformation in just five years is a remarkable achievement; to have done so whilst incorporating cutting-edge green technologies is nothing short of exemplary. If Over Yonder Cay can offer luxury, sophistication and unparalleled amenities, whilst generating its own clean energy and water, so can other small off-the-grid islands throughout the Caribbean and beyond.

he South Sound of Grand Cayman boasts a diverse landscape of Caribbean Sea, wild mangrove, beautiful homes and hidden beaches. Nestled along this spectacular landscape is a modern gem that brings the best of indoor/outdoor living to life. After being in the Cayman Islands on-and-off for 15 years, the RL

owners, first-time builders, decided they were ready to construct their dream home. All they knew was that it had to be on the water and in South Sound; so began their search. Not long after they fell in love with a piece of land; planning for their South Sound oasis began. Because they had never built before and were on a fairly tight

timeline, they chose the expertise and comfort of a design-build approach offered by The Phoenix Group. Mike Stroh of Trio Design was selected as the architect to lead them through the process. Before starting the design, Stroh had the couple create ‘idea books’ and spent much time discussing how they planned to use their

home. The couple felt the outdoor space was just as important as the indoor space; they wanted ‘open flow’ in the main living area for entertaining; and a guest room that gave visitors privacy. The result is a 3,500 square-foot modern style house with clean lines and unique architectural features all complemented by lush tropical landscaping. RL

Guests enter through a front gate that opens into a colourful courtyard where the profile of the interior staircase becomes part of the exterior design. Just one of many unique features they credit Stroh with conceptualizing. Passing a Zen garden to the left, a short ascension leads either to the backyard or to the main double glass door entry where the living room opens to the kitchen and dining room. Incorporated into the kitchen is a stunning glassed-in wine cabinet and bar service with blinds that can be raised, letting

sunlight pour in from behind. Ensuring warmth was not sacrificed for the modern style of the home, exposed wood elements from the patio ceiling to the lower kitchen cabinets are incorporated throughout. These touches provide texture and a softening of the aesthetic. The living room's long, high rectangular windows that frame the cerulean sea outside act as both a design element and a source of natural light without compromising privacy.

To provide visitors with a space of their own, an airy guest suite is tucked away on the main floor. The room connects to a deluxe bathroom complete with a walk-in shower featuring floor-to-ceiling deep blue tiles and a glass wall hidden from the outside by an over-sized raised tropical planter, making it appear that one is bathing in the jungle. Again, a feature suggested by the architect.

Journey upstairs, and the same sparkling white stone staircase visible from the outside is transformed into a stunning feature wall. Further along, on the main landing, there is a cosy den designed for lazy afternoons, as well as two more bedrooms and the master suite. The master suite is a sight to behold with its full-length glass doors that open to a large patio with soaker tub and a spectacular view of the Caribbean Sea. Natural light plays off the grey feature wall creating a sense of warmth and depth in the spacious room. From the balcony, the expansive outdoor living area comes into focus. Downstairs the patio opens out to the 40' pool, garden kitchen and outdoor fireplace perfect for cool winter evenings. Frequent entertainers, fun and functionality take centre stage from a fully kitted-out bar to an outdoor shower and bathroom. Beyond the pool the couple preserved a wild expanse of beach from where they can sway in a hammock or access the water for kayaking. To the right of the pool lies a bocce ball court. Kelly Rooney helped the owners source many of the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s materials on island from tiles supplied by ITC Tiles and Edie's DĂŠcor to custom cabinetry designed and installed by Pooley Cabinets. The home is also future-ready with its flat-roof pre-wired for solar panels. Surprised by how straightforward and stress-free the designbuild approach was, especially as it addressed their particular needs and stayed within budget, the couple are thrilled with their treasured home on the beach.

Car City

state-of-the-art gleaming steel and glass edifice, Car City’s new Mercedes-Benz showroom and workshop on Industrial Way embodies the values and standards of the brand it represents. Completed in early 2016, it is easily one of the most modern Mercedes-Benz showrooms in the Caribbean, and its contemporary design and slick industrial-style interior are already proving to be a boon to business. It’s also testament to how far the company has come. Car City started out over 30 years ago as the Cayman Islands' authorised dealer/distributor for Honda. As the business grew, Daihatsu, Mitsubishi, Jeep/Chrysler and Suzuki were added to the list of brands they represented. All of this was offered from a 1,400 square foot facility, with cars displayed out on the forecourt. When, in early 2014, the business acquired the Mercedes-Benz dealership, part of the franchise agreement was that Car City would provide a dedicated showroom for the luxury cars that reflected the German manufacturer’s corporate identity. “Mercedes-Benz wants all their dealers to have the same feel worldwide, whether it be in Cayman or in Stuttgart,” Chad Phillipps,

brand manager, explains. To achieve this, the car manufacturer has developed a very defined corporate identity with everything from signage to colour schemes and furniture being standardised across all dealerships. No expense was spared in creating a space that would do justice to the luxury vehicles on display. At 6,000 square feet it is more than four times the size of Car City’s other premises, and exudes high-end sophistication. A fully enclosed, air-conditioned showroom includes two customer lounges, each equipped with flat screen TVs and surround sound systems, creating a space where buyers can browse in complete comfort, regardless of sun or rain. Behind the showroom, a state-of-theart workshop features four work bays and overhead oil dispensing systems for the maintenance crew. With high ceilings and wall-to-wall windows across the front, the interior is fresh and light-filled. A simple but sophisticated design aesthetic complemented by sleek, contemporary furniture from Workplace Environments and Steelcase, conforms to the latest Mercedes-Benz guidelines, making it instantly recognisable to those familiar with the brand.

Although designed by Florida-based Suncoast Builders, the construction and installation was all done by local firms. Automated blinds were installed by Audiophile, the air-conditioning system by Polar Bear and CREE LED lighting from Brit Hay all help to keep indoor temperatures pleasant and running costs low. s a dynamic and forward-thinking country, the Cayman Islands have begun to settle in to a somewhat new, but steady trend of building modern, contemporary, and, more recently, ultramodern architectural designs (described hereafter as MCU). These newer homes are being seen throughout the ever-changing landscape of the island and are often quite polarizing and misunderstood. MCU, with its clean lines and minimalist feel, is quite different from traditional builds and seemingly attracts a never-ending curiosity from those looking from afar. With much consideration given to the flow of the home, the site lines, capturing of views, features, function, lighting, and the overall mood and feel it projects, it could easily be said that a well-designed and built MCU home projects a level of real allure. So, what does modern, contemporary, and ultra-modern mean anyway? There are some variations and overlapping descriptions amongst architects and industry professionals, however, below are a few descriptions that will help:

Modern architecture Developed in the 20th century after World War II, modern architecture involved the use of new building technologies such as steel, reinforced concrete and a more prevalent use of glass or fenestration. Famed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and iconic buildings like the Sydney Opera House in Australia set the standards to which many architects aspire to achieve today.

Contemporary architecture Born in the 21st century, contemporary architecture breaks away somewhat from modern architecture as it is defined and does not have a particularly recognisable style. The use of turns, curves, various shapes and often computer-aided designs, Contemporary: Walkers Building, George Town are some of the reasons for the very unique conceptual or expressionist designs, which are more typically found in commercial, government or art spaces. In fact, contemporary architecture can be loosely defined as the current style of the year, decade, etc.

Ultra-modern architecture As imagined, ultra-modern has its roots in modern architecture. Although there are several different perspectives on its true meaning, it is safe to say that it is part of the post-modern architecture style with more distinctive styling such as larger spans of glass, minimalist approaches, cantilevered decks and balconies, angled walls and the like. It is essentially modern, but simply done in an ultra, or maybe extreme sort of way. From a construction standpoint, MCU designs and styles present challenges for builders and industry professionals. Keeping up with new types of structural and interior demand changes are imperative in the methodical world of construction. Despite these demands, and judging from the successfully completed MCU homes and buildings found on island, it certainly seems that they have conquered those challenges.

a new generation of superyachts

ver the past few decades, the size of superyachts has continued to increase: at the 1991 inaugural Monaco Yacht Show, the average length was just 32 metres. Today the average yacht length exceeds 47 metres. Not only are the yachts getting bigger, but a new generation of owners are also entering the market, with traditional Middle Eastern, Russian, British and American customers being joined by increasing numbers of Asian, South American and Indian superyacht owners. While 24 metres is the starting point, superyachts can be found up to 180 meters in size (there are even plans for a 220-metre superyacht in the pipeline). Prices range from $10m to as high as $300m. The wider superyacht industry has continued to grow too: as a whole, yachting as an industry is estimated to generate around 24 billion euros a year. It involves over 6,000 companies providing everything from design, construction, crewing, yacht management, registration and legal services, yacht charter, yacht sales and purchase, surveying, naval architecture, refits, IT and AV technology, paint, maintenance, marketing, events and a host of other services. The industry employs over 130,000 land-based staff and over 30,000 crew. RL

The on-board offerings of the yachts and their technological capabilities are developing too. Larger yachts can be equipped with a helipad, a submarine or a fully kitted out beach club with extensive diving gear, lounge area, swim platform and water toys area. State-ofthe-art pools and Jacuzzis are often de rigueur, as is a fully-equipped gym with a view, a spa and massage centre, 3D cinema, games room and all the latest water toys – from seabobs and jetskis to waterslides and inflatable sailing yachts. Yachting uses and incorporates some of the world’s leading technology and research and design covering everything from hybrid engines for increased efficiency and environmental protection, to extensive developments in the use of carbon and glass for design and performance and, of course, state-of-the-art communications technology. One very new introduction is the use of virtual reality in the design and building of new yachts for clients. Fully immersive virtual reality programmes allow owners to walk through their, as yet, unbuilt yacht so they can take decisions on all sorts of design or build issues based on their ‘real’ experience of being virtually onboard. This can save a significant amount of time,

money and heartache for owners because it reduces considerably the risk of having to make expensive change orders once the yacht is already in build. The number of new yachts being ordered and launched continues to grow as does their size and the complexity of how efficiently they run and perform and what they have to offer their owners. There is increasing interest from new markets such as India, Asia and South America as the number of UHNWIs grows every year. Today, it is estimated around 6% of all those who can afford to savour yachting at its most bespoke actually do. In other words, in the world of superyachts, the opportunities for growth are as deep as the oceans.

love what I do for lots of reasons, but perhaps most of all because every day I understand human nature a little bit better. We humans can be a strange, quirky and unusual lot. And never is that more true than when it comes to how we are with money. Our relationship with it can be incredibly complex and emotional, and it is especially evident when we look at how people handle a cash windfall. Studies have shown that 90% of lottery winners go through their winnings in five years or less, and one-third declare bankruptcy. Professional sportsmen and women earn a huge amount of money in a short amount of time and suffer the same fate – an estimated 78% of NFL players go bankrupt or are under financial stress in just two years after their retirement. Why is this? It’s because when it comes to money, managing your behavior is the hardest part. A windfall can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes – a bonus, inheritance, divorce payout, a lottery win, but the temptation is always to spend it. The reason that people end up in difficulty after receiving a windfall is because it makes them feel rich and they lose a sense of reality. So, what should you do if you come into a bit (or a lot) of money that you weren’t expecting? My first suggestion is to do nothing. Wait. Put it in an account out of reach (at least one not tied to a debit card) and preferably don’t tell anyone. RL

People can be very manipulating and it’s easy to feel guilty about not helping those around you right away. Surrounding yourself by the wrong people can be disastrous. That’s not to say you can’t use it for the greater good, but just give yourself time to work out how that might look. You need to assess your current financial situation. I am a financial advisor, so this might sound like I am blowing my own trumpet, but finding yourself a trustworthy and competent advisor to act as a buffer between you and the money just might be the best thing you can do. A good financial advisor will act as an accountability check and can also serve as a very useful blaming device when it comes to people feeling as though they deserve a piece of the pie. “I would love to help you out, but my financial advisor has told me that it’s something I cannot do right now” feels a lot easier to say than just “no”. However, beware of any advisor who immediately wants to take the money off your hands without a very thorough discussion of your situation and all your options. If you have debt, particularly high-interest paying debt (such as credit cards and car loans) the first thing would be to pay that off. Mortgage debt is slightly different due to a much lower interest rate, but if you are nearing retirement age and you are still saddled with a mortgage, then paying it off could be the right thing to do. How about fixing broken things? That leaky

window, or fence, or anything else that drives you mad. I would then look at how your retirement is shaping up. Are you on track? Do you have a plan? If not, the windfall could do a wonderful job plugging the gap and give you the peace of mind that you are never going to run out. Investing for growth in a well-diversified portfolio of the great companies of the world (aka equities) is unlikely to be something you will ever regret over the long-run. Going out and spending it all on accumulating more stuff, that might well be something you live to regret. If there are things you really want (remember the difference between want and need), write a wish-list – this can help curb the spending at the start. Think about the wants carefully – are they things that will enhance your life and bring you happiness and joy? Or are they just things that you think you should want? Lastly, if the money is enough that you can invest it and generate an income that lets you live the life you want to live, for the rest of your life, then you have achieved true freedom. Not only that, but your wealth will outlive you and become your legacy. And isn’t that our ultimate dream?

he owner of legendary Negril getaway the Rockhouse Hotel, and managing partner in the growing international chain of Miss Lily’s Caribbean restaurants, Paul Salmon’s diverse businesses celebrate the best of Jamaica, its people and its culture. Both at home and abroad, Salmon’s businesses embody the bright colours, vibrant flavours and lively sounds of Jamaica. For those able to travel to the island, the Rockhouse Hotel offers plenty of sun, fun and rum, alongside a programme of activities that offer genuine cultural experiences. For those who can’t, Jamaica goes to them. Miss Lily’s, now present in Soho and the East Village in New York, and at the Sheraton in Dubai, serves up a virtual experience of Jamaica: cheerful vibes, tasty jerk treats and fresh organic juices recreate that vacation feeling, in the middle of busy city centres. Championing Jamaica’s food, music and people was not Salmon’s Plan A, however. Born and raised in Australia, Salmon’s goal was to

work as a Wall Street trader in New York. And that he did, until he went on vacation to Jamaica… “As a youngster and cricket fan, I grew up in an era when the West Indies team dominated the world competition so I had always been interested in travelling there,” he says. “But it wasn’t until ’89 or ’90 that I first went there with friends. We spent several weeks travelling around the island by bus and got to meet so many people,” he recalls. “It was a tropical paradise, of course, and the natural beauty was breathtaking, but it was the people that really captivated me: their vibrancy, positivity and zest for life.” So when, in 1994, the opportunity arose to invest in a hotel there, he felt the timing was right. “The boutique hotel wave was gathering momentum at the time. The emphasis on great design, personal service and creating connections to the local environment were something that got me really excited – and I think it’s critical to follow one’s passions,” he says. Perched on a low cliff at the western end of Negril, with steps carved

from the rock leading down to a serene bay, the Rockhouse’s location is idyllic. In the first year, the new owners renovated all the rooms, added a cliff-top pool and an upscale restaurant and, in subsequent years, adjoining properties were acquired, bringing the total room number to 34 and adding a world-class spa, fitness centre and boutique. Despite having all the trappings of a luxury hotel, it has none of the pretence. “One of our goals has always been to have a place that is fun to visit and is affordable and inclusive,” Salmon explains. “We have a broad mix of guests including great representation from the music, arts and media industries.” Hip and upbeat, it appeals to a young and young-at-heart clientele seeking a more meaningful travel experience. What Salmon really strives for at the Rockhouse, he says, is to create a business that has soul. And this he achieves through a variety of social and environmental programmes. The resort is Green Globe certified, for instance, and thus minimises use of natural resources and negative impact on the environment; it also has its own organic farm, an on-site woodworking shop that produces much of the hotel’s furniture, and it organises an annual Green Globe Quiz designed to raise environmental awareness among local students. For guests, in addition to the traditional Caribbean vacation activities, they can also join drumming, cooking and dance classes,

and can visit and help out on projects sponsored by the Rockhouse Foundation, the charitable arm of the hotel. Set up in 2004, the foundation is another facet of Salmon’s commitment to creating an ethically sound, sustainable business. Since its inception the foundation has raised over US$3.5 million, which it has invested in transforming and upgrading five local schools, and in renovating and expanding the Negril Community Library. “We looked at the needs of the community and education – especially early childhood education – was an area that struggled in terms of facilities, so it seemed a natural place to start,” he says.“Kids are the future so helping them is a positive idea that everybody can get behind.” The difference that he has been able to make to the lives of local people, he says, is the achievement of which he is most proud. From downtown restaurants to a boutique hotel and an educational charity, Salmon’s various endeavours don’t just have Jamaica in common – they are also all shaped by a drive to create positive impacts. As he puts it, it’s about “giving our guests an amazing boutique hotel vacation, making our awesome Jamaican team partners in our success, taking care of the environment, and giving back to our community.” In other words, a win-win situation all round. And that’s irie.

rtist Joanne Sibley lives and breathes painting. It’s part of her genetic make up. Whatever she is doing, whether driving, walking or talking, part of her is always assessing the scene and composing pictures in her mind’s eye. It’s the habit of a lifetime. No matter where she has been living – Canada, Jamaica or the Cayman Islands – art, drawing and painting have always been central to her life. Even as a child in Winnipeg, Canada, Sibley was drawn to art, no doubt influenced by her father, Newton Brett, who was a skilled designer and artist. “At home I would sit beside him drawing and painting while he worked at his easel,” she recalls. “He taught me many things but stressed drawing. Practice now, he would tell me, as you will never have the time you have now, later on.”

In the Cayman Islands, Sibley is perhaps best known for her charming watercolours which depict local scenes familiar to many, but that also capture the gentle rhythms of island life. “I love painting seascapes and landscapes because for the most part they are painted on site and in Cayman that can be quite glorious,” she says. “The sun, the shade, the gentle breeze and the quiet… it’s a wonderful way to spend a delightful and often challenging morning.” Painting outdoors is a multi-sensory experience, she explains, where everything – from birdsong or the sound of the sea to the warm air or a boat sailing past – influences the final painting. Ultimately, her hope is that the viewer enters the scene with her, not only seeing what is there, but feeling it as well. It is this ability to paint warmth, tranquillity and harmony that make her landscapes and seascapes so appealing to so many.

The shift to painting scenery and scenes of daily life coincided with her move to the Cayman Islands in 1980. Prior to that Sibley and her husband lived in Jamaica for 25 years but, she says, painting outdoors was hard to do there, as a crowd would always gather. In fact, in Jamaica, Sibley was better known for her portrait work. It is an aspect of her work that is not so well known in Cayman, perhaps because much of it resides in private collections, but she was honoured to be asked to paint George William Gordon, a national hero, as well as portraits of several prominent Jamaican businessmen. She credits Barrington Watson, the Jamaican portrait artist, under whom she studied for several months, with helping her hone her technique and style. For Sibley, portraits are a very different and more demanding type of work; one that requires hours of planning before you even put pencil to paper, let alone brush to canvas.

“You are not only trying to achieve an attractive piece of work, but also a pose that is interesting and an excellent likeness of the subject,” she explains. “You are hoping to achieve the feeling that the person is about to speak to you, so that the image takes on a life of its own. Successful portraits are the most challenging work to achieve.” Now aged 86 and an artist to the core, Joanne Sibley continues to draw, to paint, to accept commissions, but most of all to learn. She goes to drop in art groups and classes, where she experiments, studies, learns from other artists’ work and tries new ways of doing things. “The more knowledge I gain the more I realise, as Jaime Lee McMahan said, 'how deep the ocean is.'”

Ageing Gracefully

As much as we may wish to, nobody escapes the ageing process. It’s an unavoidable fact of life and, in a tropical climate, constant exposure to sun can accelerate the process. - Roast the corn on the cob to give a bit of charcoal colour and flavour. urn down a narrow dirt road in north Bodden Town and soon the land opens up to a patchwork of garden paths and greenhouses that is Island Fresh Produce farm. The farm’s story began more than a decade ago, when fourth generation Canadian farmer Rob Mastronardi was visiting friends in Grand Cayman. While out grocery shopping, Mastronardi saw produce from his family’s farm back in Ontario selling for three times the price. It was this ‘aha moment’ that led Mastronardi to create Island Fresh Produce. A New Frontier With a degree in horticulture and more than 20 years’ of experience, Mastronardi brought his knowledge of hydroponics and organic farming to Grand Cayman. The result? A two-acre farm that includes a 22,000 square-feet greenhouse, a water filtration system and state-of-theart technology that ensures precious resources are not wasted. Despite all this, the new climate provided the experienced farmer with some unforgiving learning experiences along the way. “It took about a year to build up to steady production as we discovered that Cayman summers are not ideal for growing the larger tomatoes and eggplants don’t thrive in greenhouses here,” explains Mastronardi. Now in their fourth year, the farm produces a variety of organic vegetables from cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers to eggplant, bok choy and spring mix. When asked about other crops Mastronardi explains that they don’t grow produce that local farmers are already cultivating. RL

Environment & Efficiency The farm operates with the efficiency of a Swiss clock. Seedlings start out in certified organic cells, called Jiffy Pots, before being transplanted to troughs. A high-tech computer system determines irrigation needs based on the strength of the sun, which if you missed it in science class is measured in joules per square centimetre. The greenhouse vents are also opened and closed throughout the day based on sun exposure. Excess water is collected and filtered through an ozone system that kills bacteria delivering clean water back to the crops, and the Jiffy Pots are recycled and used as compost for outdoor crops. Not only does this approach eliminate the use and import of plastic pots, but also they are able to get a two-year life cycle out of each one. Additionally, only non-processed fertiliser is used at the farm, which is more organic compared to processed options. No Spray Pest Control The farm uses what is called integrated pest management. Insect netting and sticky cards provide a first line of defence against pests. The second line of defence – bugs. Five to six different types of insects are imported to naturally control the bad bugs, with a new population brought in every three to four months. Crops are also spaced out: a few rows of peppers, a few rows of cucumber, a few rows of tomatoes. This is called 'buffering', which Mastronardi explains is done for two reasons, “If there is a row of tomatoes that has a pest or virus, it can’t spread as fast, and it is easier to re-plant slowly rather than pull a whole bay of a certain crop at once.”
