M

eticulously designed and impeccably styled, the 9,000 square foot property is comprised of a magnificent two-storey main house with seven bedrooms and a separate two-bedroom bungalow, positioned among swaying palm trees on a fine white sand, starfish filled beach. The owner, an entertainment entrepreneur, had visited some of the world’s finest boutique hotels and resorts, for business and pleasure, and incorporated elements of these in his own family vacation retreat. “My concept was for an attractively designed, yet laid-back inter-generational space, that felt like home,” the owner explained. Particularly inspired by Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island, a private island retreat in the BVI that is heavily influenced by Balinese design, the owner persuaded Branson to assist as an informal design consultant for Kempa Kai. "I wanted to take what were, for me, the most appealing touches of Balinese architecture, while implementing the modern twist of luxury features," he explained. "So, while retaining several of its traditional aesthetic elements, design artistry and craftsmanship, I added contemporary and Cayman-inspired aspects." To assist in achieving this vision, he enlisted the services of award-winning architect John Doak, who fused the high ceilings and ample use of hardwood and thatch work typical of South East Asian design with the indoor/outdoor living concept and clean lines of modern Caribbean architecture. It’s a style he has termed 'Cay-Bali'.

To ensure the architectural vision was built to the owner’s quality expectations, BCQS Limited was contracted to manage the construction. Michelle Butler and David Wilson of Design Studio worked their magic on the dramatic spaces to create a sense of calm and easy flow between indoors and out. Design Studio was also integral to interpreting the owner's vision by designing and importing unique furniture and fixtures from around the world. An important element of Balinese design is the inclusion of the natural environment, whose cleansing and rejuvenating properties are said to bring harmony into a home. There are water features, a profusion of indoor and outdoor live plants, stone and wood – including indoor and outdoor beds and closets custom made by John Bird of Martlet Designs – that all play a part in bringing nature in. A stone driveway leads through the private gated compound to a covered portico, flanked on either side by koi carp ponds. The grand wooden front door leads directly into the great room, a magnificent double height living space where woven bamboo thatch covers the ceiling, a tribute to both Caymanian and Balinese traditional thatch work. Wall to wall foldaway Panda glass doors allow unhindered views across the pool to the sea and the continuous use of natural stone flooring, sourced by ITC extends from the living space out onto the terrace creating a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. Impressive staircases on either side of the vast living space lead up to the east and west wings and create a pleasing symmetry. Design Studio expanded on this with an equally symmetrical, linear arrangement of furniture in the centre of the room. This draws the eye RL

through the interior and out to the fresh, white paved terrace and long infinity pool. To further reinforce the sightlines, potted palms positioned in rows begin indoors and continue along the pool deck, and ultimately blend with the natural palms that stand sentry on the beach. In one corner of the great room, the owner’s treasured artefacts from Havana have found their home behind the semi-circular bar which appears to have been carved out of an earlier place and time. Ideally positioned between the living area, kitchen and dining room, it’s the perfect spot to mix a pre-dinner cocktail, before adjourning to the 16-seater dining table, locally crafted by John Bird and lit by David Wilson's rustic rope chandelier. With glass doors on three sides, the dining room offers an experience that is as close to alfresco dining as possible with the added convenience of being adjacent to the bar and kitchen. Designed with entertaining in mind, the kitchen is dominated by a large central island with a glossy marble countertop supplied by ITC and the bright and sunny ambience is enhanced by Ann Sach's custom designed yellow tile. The folding windows running the length of one side completely open onto an outdoor bar and BBQ area. The chef-grade appliances are ideal for home cooking and when catering to larger parties there is an adjacent service kitchen connecting to the outdoor cooking area. RL RL

The upper level of the west wing is the owner’s private sanctuary, with a stunning bedroom with retractable glass doors on three sides that provide wraparound sea views and the ability to open the space to the elements. With two private balconies, there is space to enjoy moments of solitude. The third and largest balcony, furnished with Balinese daybeds, overlooks the pool and beach and connects to the beachfront suite in the opposite wing. In the bathroom, a freestanding oval tub placed next to a long window provides views through the trees to the sea while enjoying a long soak. A huge walk-in shower, screened in glass, keeps the space open and light. Also in this wing is the owner’s study with a stunning live edge hardwood desk and a custom made foldaway bed in case of extra visitors, and a spiral staircase that leads up to a roof terrace – a perfect spot to lounge in the jacuzzi and soak in the views as the sun sets.

As the owner’s extended family are regular visitors, the residence was designed to accommodate everyone with their own private suite. The other three suites in the main residence are thus equally inviting, with a commissioned portrait by local contemporary artist Dready of each family member in their respective bathrooms. The suites all feature the same sophisticated but simple aesthetic, with restful white, cream and brown colour schemes reminiscent of a luxury hotel and are furnished with dark mahogany beds, intricate Balinese wood carvings, natural fibre rugs and billowing white curtains. Although no two bathrooms are alike, the interior designer explained, all were designed to offer a luxurious spa-like feel. Natural stone and wood tile floors were kept continuous in the shower, vanity and bath areas to maintain an open concept, with discreet storage and high-end fixtures adding to the sense of sleek sophistication.

“One of our favourite en suites is in the guest bungalow, where we were able to use the outdoor, walled garden area as an extension to the bathroom,” Michelle said. “The shower is located in this courtyard where Cayman stone walls and wood screening afford total privacy. The effect is truly magical.” The separate two-bedroom guest bungalow was inspired by the children’s story Swiss Family Robinson. Ideal for young families, it features a bright kids’ room with custom-made bunks and turtle shell reading lights, and a connecting master suite or nanny suite. Both open onto a secure, walled garden perfect for safe play. From the bungalow, guests can peacefully access the beach via tree-lined stepping-stones. A miniature private resort of its own, Kempa Kai’s outdoor amenities are sublime: the centre piece is the shimmering infinity pool that stretches from the main residence down to the beach. It is flanked on either side by crisp, white cushioned loungers; scattered among coconut palms, on the sand are white woven hammocks and carved wooden sofas. Under a thatched cabana a swinging day bed is suspended from the rafters. No shortage of places to relax and recharge.

Indoors further relaxation spaces include the custom-built entertainment room with the ultimate laid-back lounger for the entire family to recline. Overlooking the great room and adjoining two bedrooms on the east wing, is an expansive built in seating area featuring an original commissioned brush stroked painting of stingrays by Guy Harvey, a nod to the local marine life. Alongside the opulence, however, the owner was keen to incorporate sustainability. Thus, the residence features a smart energy management system that shuts off the A/C when doors or windows are open, propane appliances supplied by A. L. Thompson’s, with the main gas system efficiently installed by Go Gas, solar and Tesla power wall wiring, drought-resistant plants to reduce water consumption, and ample recycling bins.

It took four years and a strong team of experienced professionals to give shape to the owner’s vision. The end result is a spectacular fusion of architectural influences and design details that have endowed Kempa Kai with both the quiet elegance of a luxury resort and the warmth and character of a private home.

King’s View

uilt and owned by Paul King, a local property lawyer, and his wife Rita, a graduate of Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), King’s View was a joint labour of love. The couple had spotted the potential of the lot as soon as they saw it. “We were renting a tiny home nearby, and fell in love with the property,” says Paul. “We spent many sunsets swimming in the bay looking back at it and dreamed of one day owning the land. We managed to close on it just two months before our wedding on Pink Sands Beach.” Both were actively involved in every aspect of the build, with Paul taking on the project management and Rita the interior design. As first-time builders, it was a daunting undertaking, but one they completed in record time, moving into the 6650 square foot home just a year after breaking ground.

Arranged over three levels, with three guest suites on the top floor, the living area, various bedrooms, pool and terrace on the ground floor, and an entertainment space on the basement level, they have created a spacious, airy family home, with a traditional Bahamian look and feel, where they can embrace an active, outdoor lifestyle, entertain friends and family and make the most of their privileged bay views. Bahamian-raised but schooled in the UK, Paul’s passion for traditional island architecture and carpentry is reflected in the property’s two-storey cypresswood facade, pitched roofs and wood siding, while Rita’s artistic eye has created warm, welcoming interiors that play with elements of industrial design, coastal accents and whimsical details.

“What is truly amazing is that Rita sourced the furniture and fittings entirely online, without visiting one show room,” says Paul. “She has an insane knack for visualizing rooms from start to finish.” A curving driveway leads down through lush palms to the property. Rather than a front door the entrance is a covered breezeway where hanging day beds swing lazily in the shade. This cool wind tunnel opens onto a courtyard with a turtle pond at its centre, which in turn leads to the true heart of the home – the great room. The huge kitchen, living and dining space features wooden beams, white painted ship lapped walls and ceilings, and sliding glass doors that open onto a deck with sensational views over the bay.

Next to the pool, the covered terrace provides ample outdoor living space, with a large dining table, outdoor kitchen, and a vast L-shaped sofa. Avowed foodies, the Kings have designed an elegant, characterfilled kitchen that makes cooking a joy. A 14-foot kitchen island with a weathered hardwood countertop is lit by salvaged ship’s lights and a backsplash of Cuban-inspired black and white tiles continues the vintage theme. Positioned in front of the sliding terrace doors, two oversize Chesterfields from Roger + Chris invite one to sink down and drink in the view of the infinity pool and sea beyond.

Rita’s flair for design has created a different ambience in each of the eight en suite bedrooms. On the top floor, the guest rooms open onto long shady verandas front and back, and offer plenty of old-world charm with pitched ceilings, dormer windows and soothing pastel walls. On the ground floor, the master suite is a fresh, modern space with wall-to-wall glass on the sea-facing side and a dramatic statement wall, clad in reclaimed barn wood, framing the king size bed. A large canvas of a red rooster hanging above the bed brings colour and life to the space and pendant lights made from glass wine jugs add sophisticated style.

Double bunk beds in the kids’ room promise fun for the young, whilst in the navy and white room iron bed frames, decorative life rings and brass pendant lights whisper of ships at sea in days of old. The flamingo room, on the other hand, where one wall is papered with the national bird of the Bahamas, is quirkily contemporary, and the self-contained apartment with adjoining kitchenette and living room, is bright and beachy. Activity and entertainment being a huge part of the owner’s lives, the basement level houses a gym, table tennis table and a full size Brunswick pool table, as well as a changing room, only steps from the beach. Painted in bright bold stripes, it is a playful, modern take on the Victorian beach huts once common to English seaside resorts. With storage space for water toys, a 100foot dock and a separate 25-metre lap pool, there’s no room for boredom at King’s View.

Hot sun, salty air, wet swimsuits and a 115-pound family dog all take their toll on furnishings, so in order to ensure practicality as well as beauty, the couple designed many of the signature pieces themselves – the hanging day beds, the outdoor sofa, the master bed – and had them built from Brazilian hardwood. Impressive in both scale and design, it is the minute attention to detail that is perhaps the Kings’ greatest feat. From grooves and rain holes in exterior stairs, to A/C vents screened by whitewashed fish pot material and locally-made lattice work on cabinet doors,

even the smallest element has been carefully chosen to create a harmonious aesthetic. Rita’s tasteful mix of natural materials, antique maritime pieces, and local art and photography, all come together beautifully within King’s View’s gracious walls, while its outdoor spaces and endless sports facilities take full advantage of its beachside location. With its lust list of design features and A-lister vibe, this is one residence that is more than fit for royalty.

deally situated on Seven Mile Beach, with envy-inducing resort amenities at its disposal, this three bedroom condominium’s almost 3000 square feet of interior space combine superb finishes with sleek symmetry and sea-themed sophistication. Designed to maximise enjoyment of the vibrant views, the open plan living space and master suite occupy the western, beach-facing side of the building, each with a deep shaded terrace overlooking lush, landscaped gardens, an undulating pool and the sea beyond. The two guest suites, one with a private balcony, face the rising sun on the opposite side of the ten-storey tower. Cayman-based Design Studio, were commissioned to develop, coordinate and execute the interior design for this home, choosing furniture and accessories that reflect the quality of the condo whilst also acknowledging its Cayman roots and coastal location. “We wanted the owners and guests to feel instantly at home, to kick off their shoes on the patio and never want to leave,” says interior designer Michelle Butler. High ceilings, white walls, floor-to-ceiling windows and pale, wood-grain floor tiles lend the interiors a sense of space and serenity whilst the soft grey tones of the living room create a soothing contrast to the vivid colours outside. Thoughtful positioning of lights and furniture subtly divide kitchen, dining and seating areas, and the ingenious glass NannaWall on the sea-facing side folds away to seamlessly merge the living space and terrace, and thus blur the transition between indoors and outdoors. A rich mix of materials – marble, wood, metal, fabric and textured wallpaper – along with flashes of colour from throw cushions, plants and a large area rug give the neutral palette a lift, whilst a multitude of silvery reflections from the chrome reading lights, metallic vases and a side table inlaid with tiny pearlescent shells, add a hint of glamour. The kitchen – a masterpiece of pared back minimalism – is an oasis of pristine, gleaming white. Acres of counter space and an extra-long island, topped with luxurious grey-veined Staturietto marble, are perfectly offset by high gloss white cabinetry. Rows of soft-close drawers and cupboards keep counter spaces clear whilst concealing a lust-list of high-end Miele and Sub Zero appliances, including a wine fridge, warming and cooling drawers, microwave and more. The uncluttered, clean aesthetic of the kitchen is so calming, even the most reluctant chef would be itching to chop, steam and sauté here.

Creamy tones dominate in the master suite where an upholstered bed, dressed in luxurious crisp cotton linens from Bedside Manor, takes centre stage below a tray ceiling. The sleek bathroom, with a deep, freestanding oval bathtub, twin rain showers, his and her sinks and marble floors provides an at-home spa experience, and a walk-in closet with a full height mirror and custom-built shelving ensures every personal item has its place. This private suite opens onto a shaded balcony where glass railings give uninterrupted views of shore, sea and sky – the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or a moonlit nightcap. In the guest suites, the interior design adds depth and character through clever use of colour and texture, with dark blue feature walls and warm rugs. In one suite, the bed and headboard, upholstered in an intricately patterned fabric that echoes the tone of wall behind it, makes a dramatic statement piece. Flanked by a symmetrical arrangement of lamps and bedside tables, it’s a contemporary take on an intimate boudoir. In the second guest room, where the bed is simpler in design, the colourful printed bed linens provide visual interest and, being 100% cotton, promise a restful night’s sleep. Above the bed, a sunburst mirror in a copper finish adds a playful touch to the feature wall and reflects the blue beaded chandelier back into the room.

HELLO, RENO A well-executed renovation is the most successful investment you can make in your home, but it requires careful thought and budgeting. Tracey Kline of Encompass shares her top remodelling tips. GATHER YOUR THOUGHTS The purpose of your remodelling project will dictate to a great extent what you do and how you do it. OPEN UP Open plan living areas with good indooroutdoor flow are a key component of modern design, so if your home has a separate kitchen, dining room and living room, breaking through a few walls can make spaces feel larger and more efficient with minimal effort and cost. KITCHEN The kitchen is literally the heart of the home and a well-planned renovation can significantly increase the overall value of your home, whilst also making this central space more enjoyable to cook and entertain in. When designing a new layout, keep the “working triangle” in mind. The sink, refrigerator and stove are the most used areas in any kitchen so you want to ensure easy movement between these three features, and keep the distance between them as short as possible: each leg of your triangle should measure between four and nine feet to maximise functionality.

How much is enough? Words by Georgie Loxton, CFA, Founder, Liberty Wealth Partners

T

here is a question that John D. Rockefeller was once asked by a reporter, “How much money is enough?” His response was, “Just a little bit more.” It is a common human affliction that we are unable to balance wanting more with having enough. It’s the tug of war that we play between today and tomorrow, between spending and saving. And it’s good and bad. Every day there are close to eight billion people waking upon planet Earth with the drive and aspiration to better themselves and their lives. This evolutionary instinct in each of us is part of the reason why humans have been so successful and why life continues to improve year after year. There is a collective benefit for the human race in each individual wanting more. For the individual though, I question the benefit. Some people go through life never having an answer to the question ‘how much is enough?’ The constant search for more leaves them stuck on a never-ending treadmill, and further and further from contentment, joy and peace. Michael Norton of Harvard Business School asked people how happy they were on a scale of one to ten and how much more money RL

they would need in order to reach ten. The answers? Everyone said two to three times as much money, regardless of how much they had. Norton says that when we think about how satisfied we are, we ask ourselves two questions. Am I doing better than I was before? And am I doing better than other people? Money is an easy(ish) dimension in which to compare yourself so we look to things like the size of our house, or the number of houses, or the type of car we drive to answer those two questions. The problem is that knowing how much is enough is hard. Vicki Robin (author of Your Money or Your Life) defines enough as “the quality of having everything you need and want but nothing in excess, nothing that burdens you.” Brian Portnoy wrote in The Geometry of Wealth, “Enough is hard. It is harder than more.” Studies have shown that the transition from work to retirement can be one of the unhappiest times of our lives because it’s right then in that moment that we stop chasing more. We supress an evolutionary part of us – the part of our brain that says more is always better.

Gratitude is a key component of feeling like you have enough. Epictetus, the Greek Stoic Philosopher, is quoted as saying “He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.” If you find yourself thinking ‘just a little bit more’, my challenge to you is to question the sort of life you want to lead. Have a conversation with your partner, bring the topic up. If you want to answer the question, you probably won’t do it alone. I leave you with a quote from fellow blogger, Michael Batnik. Batnik wrote: At a party given by a billionaire on Shelter Island, the late Kurt Vonnegut informs his pal, author Joseph Heller, that their host, a hedge fund manager, had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his wildly popular novel, Catch-22, over its whole history. Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have – enough.”

POSITIVE GROWTH THE CAYMAN HOTEL MARKET Words by Fleur Peck of Blue Point Consultants Ltd.

T

he Cayman hotel and tourism industry had an exciting 2018, with several transactions taking place from various high level investment groups. The highest recorded Caribbean hotel transaction to date took place in Cayman in November 2018 when The Westin Casuarina Resort & Spa and Sunshine Suites sold for over US$300m. This transaction built on the momentum set by the sale of The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman, as well as the smaller Holiday Inn, over the past 12 months. All these resorts underwent significant property improvements prior to or after their sale. According to STR data, the Cayman Islands hotel market experienced the largest rises in the Caribbean region for each of the three key performance metrics in 2018. They reported an impressive 6.4 percent increase in hotel occupancy, a 14.6 percent increase in average daily rates and a 22 percent increase in revenue per available room. Tourism arrivals reached a peak in 2018 with 463,001, an increase of 10.7% on 2017 numbers. Much of this growth was attributed to a strong US travel market, as well as being a consequence of displacement after damage to other islands from hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. RL

However, with hurricane repairs to many competing hotels well underway, and a number already open for business again, there may be some re-balancing through 2019. Nonetheless, even after supply in other islands is re-established we expect that many tourists that visited Cayman for the first time in 2018 will return. The Cayman Islands is unique in that, compared with many other destinations, the majority of its inventory of rooms is in condominiums rather than traditional hotels. The latest recorded data from the Cayman Islands Statistics Office show that there are 2,487 hotel rooms compared with 3,709 rooms in apartments and guesthouses. Thus, with a relatively limited supply of hotel rooms, demand is high and trading levels are strong. The strong performance of the hotel market has spurred on several future hotel developments, including a potential Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons and other unbranded hotels. Hopefully the new airport, due for completion this year, will be able to accommodate the resulting increased influx of visitors.

Although the Caribbean Tourism Organisation has expressed some concern that the outcome of Brexit negotiations, the on-going trade war between the US and China and rising interest rates could lead to a potential downturn in tourism across the region, the Cayman Islands has a few unique aces up its sleeve which may well help safeguard against any such slowdown. Not only do the islands boast excellent infrastructure and a clutch of new hotel developments in the pipeline, but they also organise and host a range of world-class large scale events. From Pirates Week to the Cayman Cookout, Taste of Cayman, Legends Tennis Tournament and the newly inaugurated KAABOO festival, Cayman’s roster of annual events draw tens of thousands of stayover visitors each year and thus well attended events may well help keep arrival numbers buoyant.

WELLNESS TRAVEL A MINDFUL APPROACH

Feeling healthy and vital in body and mind is something we all aspire to – and that’s exactly the desire the wellness industry taps into. Distinct from medicine, which deals with disease, wellness is concerned with all-round health, including physical fitness, psychological wellbeing and good nutrition. Words by Natasha Were.

I

n a fast-paced, stressed out and unhealthy world, it’s hardly surprising that people are more prepared than ever to invest time and money in their personal wellbeing, whether at home, at work or on vacation. The Global Wellness Institute puts the value of the worldwide wellness economy - which covers everything from fitness classes and day spas to healthy food and yoga retreats - at a massive $4.2 trillion. Wellness tourism, which is defined as “travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s personal wellbeing,” is one of the fastest growing sectors of the wellness industry. Globally, wellness tourism was valued at $639 billion in 2017 and is growing twice as fast as overall tourism. Embracing this emerging trend makes sound economic sense: wellness travellers spend, on average, 53% more than mainstream tourists, and as these visitors pay for both generic services, such as accommodation and transport, and for wellness-focused activities, like massages and fitness classes, that spending benefits all segments of the tourism industry. With plenty of natural beauty, countless land and water-based activities, numerous day spas and superb restaurants, Cayman has all the ingredients to attract wellness-seekers, and over the past few years, the Department of Tourism has been working to further develop this emerging sector. Although most large hotels and resorts on island list spas and gyms among their amenities, and provide these facilities as an add-on to a vacation, to date no resorts have aimed their product specifically at the wellness traveller.

That is all about to change, however. Kim and Ashleigh Lund recently announced plans to develop the site of the former Mariner’s Cove into a ‘healing resort’ where alongside organic gardens, yoga spaces and vegan food, guests will be able to choose from a variety of natural healing therapies. In George Town, meanwhile, local developer NCB Group has partnered with the Hilton brand to build Cayman’s first Hilton Hotel, a boutique wellness hotel where every element – from a sea view spa and farm-to-table dining to organic wines - is dedicated to enhancing guests’ physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. The concept of human health dovetails naturally with the health of the environment, and both these developments will be eco-friendly. Sustainable construction has always been a priority for NCB Group, and thus a wellness hotel is a natural extension of these values. “Although sustainability has typically been associated with the natural environment, at its core it’s about balance – using the resources available to us responsibly, so that we do not exhaust them for the next generation,” explains Sales & Marketing Manager Tania Knapik. “At NCB Group we believe that human sustainability is equally important and that means looking after our physical and mental health today, so that we can thrive in the future.” Developing wellness tourism therefore promises more sustainable construction, improved wellbeing for visitors and more spending in tourism businesses. Guy Harvey:

One Man and the Sea

Dr. Guy Harvey may be best known for his dynamic depictions of marine wildlife, but he is much more than an artist. Over the course of his colourful career he has travelled to remote regions, swum with giant ocean predators, set up marine research organisations and been instrumental in achieving better protection of vulnerable marine species. aised in Jamaica, where he spent much of his childhood swimming and diving off the south coast he developed an affinity for the ocean early on. As a teenager, learning to catch marlin from dugout canoes with local fishermen he developed what he calls an ‘infatuation’ with these fish and a passion for big game fishing that would last a lifetime. “They grow up to 17 or 18 feet long and have beautiful colouration,” he enthuses. “When they’re on the line, their acrobatics, speed, power and endurance is like no other fish. The blue marlin is the ultimate big game experience.” When his mother gave him a copy of Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea the simple tale of one man’s epic struggle with a massive marlin resonated deeply. So much so that, aged 18, he

created a series of 44 pen and ink drawings of the story. Years later, these illustrations would launch his artistic career. Before that, however, he dove headfirst into academia, studying for a degree in Marine Biology at Aberdeen University, followed by a PhD in Fisheries Management at the University of the West Indies and later a teaching position there. It was while teaching that he decided to exhibit some of his illustrations of The Old Man and the Sea. The overwhelming sales of his limited edition prints convinced him to set aside his scientific career for a time and turn his hobby into a business. Within a few years, his drawings and paintings of billfish, sharks and rays were being reproduced on T-shirts, merchandise, licence plates and more, and his name became synonymous with marine wildlife art.

“Many [of these fish] are too large to be kept in captivity so art and underwater documentaries are the only way the public can access them,” he points out. His unique combination of artistic ability, scientific knowledge and face-to-face encounters with these creatures has enabled him to create extremely accurate, life like depictions of some of the least-known ocean dwellers. After a decade or so of building up his art businesses, Guy says, he was in a good position to return to science and, more specifically, to marine conservation. “Growing up in Jamaica I had seen over exploitation at its worst. Just in my lifetime, the degradation of reefs and overfishing of sharks, billfish and tuna has been devastating.” Using proceeds from the licensing of his artwork to help fund his conservation activities, he set up the Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) in 1991 - the same year that he moved to Grand Cayman.

Based at Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, it specialises in the objects of his fascination – billfish – and various species of shark, all of which have been overfished in recent decades. A keen angler himself, he is at pains to emphasize that he is not against fishing: what he is against is overfishing. The ultimate aim is therefore to convince governments to enact legislation such as size restrictions, closed seasons and more marine protected areas that will ensure fishing activities are sustainable. The best way to argue the case is with scientific research. But these fish are highly migratory, and gathering data is difficult and expensive, he says, so not many people do it. First one must travel to often remote regions to find the fish, then they must be caught, tagged and the data analysed. An active participant on these expeditions, Guy has pioneered a technique that allows him to dive with marlin and sailfish. It is a rare privilege to witness these huge creatures swimming freely and serves as both inspiration for his art and provides exhilarating footage for the documentaries he and his daughter Jessica make about their work. The data collected is less uplifting, however. In a study of mako sharks – a species that is particularly good to eat - 30% of the makos they tagged were caught and killed. “That mortality rate is totally unsustainable. But because of our research, all the regulations in America have been changed this last year. That’s the reason we do it,” he concludes. Closer to home, GHRI has been monitoring the friendly residents of Stingray City since 2002. The long-term nature of the study meant that they spotted a sharp decline in stingray numbers in 2011/12. When visiting vets found no physiological problems that would account for this, it was determined to be the result of stingrays being removed from the site. Indeed, four tagged rays were then found in captivity. It took a bad thing for a good thing to happen, he says, and the next year the law was amended to prohibit the taking or possession of stingrays in the Cayman Islands. Working alongside like-minded organisations, GHRI has contributed to achieving similar protection of sharks, billfish and groupers in the US, Caribbean and Central America.

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF), established in 2008, increased the scope and reach of his conservation work. In addition to funding and conducting scientific studies, its mandate includes telling the story of the research through documentary films and educational activities. The films, Mystery of the Grouper Moon and Grouper Moon the Next Phase document the extensive research carried out by the Department of Environment and REEF in their fight to protect the last intact spawning aggregation site for Nassau Grouper in the Cayman Islands. It’s a true conservation success story and one that he is keen to see replicated internationally. The GHOF recently concluded the second annual Ocean Conservation Month in Cayman, with a series of events ranging from beach clean ups and documentary screenings to lionfish culls and family fun days. The foundation is one of the few NGOs in Cayman that is concerned with marine matters, and one that people can volunteer with and get involved in – something he strongly encourages. As with all environmental matters, raising awareness of the plight of the oceans is the first step towards protecting them. Through a career that has encompassed research, conservation, art, photography, film-making and more, Dr. Guy Harvey has done just that – and at the same time given audiences around the world priceless insights into the mystery and majesty of some of the ocean’s most elusive inhabitants.

WHAT DOES ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE MEAN? Architectural heritage refers to the historic homes and public buildings that tell the story of how design and construction has evolved in any given place. Cayman’s architectural heritage can be seen in Government buildings such as the Museum, Elmslie Church, the Town Hall and Library in George Town as well as in some neighbourhoods in West Bay, Bodden Town and East End. WHY IS PRESERVING OUR ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE IMPORTANT? Our historic buildings teach us about the lifestyles of past generations, how people lived and how their lives were influenced. This architectural heritage is part of our national identity and culture. If it is not preserved, the very essence of what ‘Caymanian’ is, is in danger of being lost. 2. THE WATTLE AND DAUB COTTAGE Once a permanent population was established, from the mid 1700s, stronger, more durable dwellings were built. The walls were framed from hardwood and set on foundations of ironwood that once grew abundantly here. Between the wall posts, a basket weave of cabbagewood wattles created a mesh, to which lime plaster was then applied to form the exterior walls. Floors were either finished in a lime daub, with mill-sawn timber or wood salvaged from shipwrecks. Roofs were originally thatched with palm fronds, and later with wood shingles, and windows were simple openings in the walls with wooden shutters. 3. THE WOOD BOARDED CABIN The cabin came about in the late 19th century when factories in the US began to produce pre-cut lumber, which Caymanian seamen would bring back to the islands. The rectangular houses were set above the ground, framed up very quickly using 2x4 timber and finished on the outside with ship-lap boarding. Zinc sheeting was used to roof the houses. Porches and roofs were elaborately decorated with trimmings, coining the term gingerbreading, and the veranda became a universal feature on the front of the house where neighbours would visit and catch up on island news. 4. THE BUNGALOW AND UPSTAIRS HOUSE The bungalow style reached Cayman in the 1920s. Unlike its cabin and cottage predecessors, it is completely asymmetrical in layout. The homeowner could have rooms wherever he wanted them - no two houses were the same. The distinctive features of the bungalow are a shallower roof slope, wide roof overhangs and a square-ish porch at the front flanked by oversized columns. The upstairs house is essentially a two-storey version of the bungalow, cabin or cottage. These homes were built by the George Town merchant families around the turn of the 20th century. 5. CONCRETE BLOCK BUILDING Since the Flowers family began to mass-produce concrete blocks 40 years ago, fewer homes are built in timber. Nowadays we see a profusion of bungalow and sprawling ranch-style houses being built, reflecting Cayman’s international mix of residents.

WHAT TRADITIONAL DESIGN ELEMENTS CAN BE SEEN IN TODAY’S STRUCTURES? Although the trimmings and fanciful details have given way to a cleaner, low-maintenance style, elements suited to a tropical climate are still used. These include overhanging roofs with verandas oriented to catch the breeze and provide shelter from the rain, and louvred shutters for privacy and shade. Pastel colours and hardwood boarding are also being brought back to add warmth and ‘homeliness’ to minimalist designs. HOW DOES JDA HELP PRESERVE HERITAGE DESIGNS? Over the years we have been involved with a number of “rescues” where an old home has become dilapidated or is threatened with demolition due to its location. In those circumstances we have literally lifted the house onto a low loader and moved it to another location where it is restored or repurposed. We moved a home from Savannah to Pedro St James where it now serves as a gallery for arts and crafts and we relocated a wattle and daub house (now converted into a guest house) in South Sound within the same property. We were involved with the complete reconstruction of Pedro St James Castle in association with a historic buildings consulting firm from Canada and we assisted the Cayman National Cultural Foundation with the preservation of Miss Lassie’s house in South Sound. CAN EXISTING HERITAGE HOMES BE ADAPTED TO MODERN LIVING? Heritage homes can be adapted for modern living, particularly if you favour an eclectic style that mixes modern with traditional finishes, fixtures and furnishings. Older homes tend to be rectangular with four small rooms but these can be combined to create larger, open-plan spaces and they can be expanded in any or all directions with wraparound verandahs and additional bedrooms. However, most older homes were built from wood so, whilst being simple to adapt, will require a lot of maintenance. HOW CAN WE BUILD MODERN HOMES THAT RESPECT CAYMAN’S ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE? On an island with no covenanted design codes and a resident population that includes 140 different nationalities, it is inevitable that new designs will tend towards a more ‘international’ style. Indeed, preserving our cultural heritage doesn’t need to be interpreted so literally that new homes should all look like those heritage homes. What is essential in the design and construction of Cayman’s future buildings is a fundamental appreciation of the Caribbean climate, and using materials and construction methods appropriate for this often-harsh environment. Indeed, most of Cayman’s professionally qualified architects work in association with offshore firms providing the local knowledge to inform developers of the most appropriate solutions.

Summer is always a sizzler and the temptation is inevitably to retreat indoors and crank up the airconditioning. Â But with a little planning, use of innovative technology and clever accessorising you can reduce heat gain and turn your outdoor space into a cool and stylish private retreat. Words by Natasha Were. MAKE AN ASSESSMENT The key to keeping your exterior space from becoming a furnace is thoughtful positioning. Consider the path of the sun throughout the course of the day, the prevailing wind direction, the views and the existing landscaping. If you have existing trees, take advantage of the ready-made shade they provide; bear in mind that the afternoon sun is the hottest, so a west-facing terrace or deck will heat up more than a north facing one and whenever possible position outdoor living areas to catch the breeze. GO UNDERCOVER Shade is an absolute essential in any outdoor design, and the more of it you have the better. Permanent shade structures such as covered terraces or porches are ideal close to the house, but around the pool or in

the garden use shade sails and umbrellas: these are cost-effective, require no installation and can be adjusted as the sun moves. Garden Utopias Gardens are outdoor sanctuaries: places where we can play, rest and socialise, cradled by nature. Tom Balon of Vigoro Nursery talked to us about some of the golden rules and pitfalls to avoid when creating your garden utopia. Words by Natasha Were. n a climate that invites outdoor living, a garden truly becomes an extension of one’s living space. But in order for it to be both pleasing to the eye and fully utilised, there are a few key elements to consider. BALANCE WITH THE BUILDING The house will always be the dominant structure in a garden, so the landscaping design should aim to work with this, not against it. “Any building,” Tom explains, “will have various architectural focal points. Your landscaping should enhance these, rather than obscure them.” Consider the views from indoors – you don’t want to block them with ill-placed trees or shrubs – as well as the elevation of the building, so that the planting does not dwarf the construction. NATIVE AND EXISTING PLANTS Whenever possible use existing landscaping and any plants or trees that are already there, even if they have to be relocated. Not only does it reduce work and costs, but you get the assurance these plants will do well in that location. Similarly, when choosing new plants, opt for hardy, native species that are adapted to the climate. Each garden will have its own set of conditions – type of soil, exposure to wind, proximity to sea – that will affect what grows there, but a peek at your neighbours’ garden will give you a good idea of what will thrive. RL

SHADE To make your garden a tranquil retreat that you can enjoy year round, shade is essential. Covered terrace areas may well be part of the architecture, but if you want to create play areas for kids, quiet reading corners or a place to string a hammock, you’ll want to keep the direct sun off. A pergola with a vine trained over it can make a wonderful alfresco dining area, but if space permits, trees with a leafy canopy will give you more than simple shade: plant mangos for delicious fruit, poincianas for a vivid burst of colour, neem for its pestdeterring properties, or for more confined spaces frangipani, which will not take over a garden and also does well in pots. SPACING When planting trees and shrubs, bear in mind that they will grow upwards and outward. “We see this all the time,” Tom says. “People plant something like a date palm six

feet from the house and within three years it is swallowing it. Or they place buttonwood a foot apart, when they would do better being two to three feet apart.” Also, he cautions, look up – you don’t want to plant under power lines. ZONING AND PRIVACY Rather than one big open space, an appealing garden will have various zones a seating area, a kids’ space, or a barbecue spot - within it. Pavers or flagstones are great for both dividing the spaces and leading you to your destination. Alternately, bamboo, palms or even inanimate things like timber screens can be arranged to isolate small areas. When it comes to ensuring privacy from outside eyes, however, Tom advises that this is better achieved with layers of full, lush informal landscaping than straight hedges or rows of trees. With this framework in place you can then have fun adding plants for texture, colour and fragrance, water features for their soothing sound and ability to invite the wildlife in, artificial grass or rubber surfacing for play areas – whatever will make your outdoor space into a relaxing refuge.

GET WET Pool, sea or cold bath – if there is water nearby, get in it and stay in it. It’s a scientific fact that water conducts heat away from the body 20 times faster than air, so even if it feels like a warm caress, it’s a cooler option than staying dry.

HYDRATE RIGHT Replacing fluids lost through sweat is essential - but avoid coffee and alcohol (they are diuretics) and sodas (which decrease your body’s ability to store water). When you tire of plain old H2O, try adding lemon and lime or sprigs of mint, with plenty of ice.

MISTING MACHINES Perfect for chilling in the backyard or on the porch, these systems use an electric fan to blow a steady mist of moisture across your outdoor space, creating a pleasant cooling breeze whenever you need it.

ripping from trees across the Caribbean and Central America, the flesh, seeds and leaves of the guava have, for centuries, been prized for both their flavour and therapeutic properties. Indeed, the old adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” could just as well apply to guavas in tropical regions. Like apples, the fruit grows prolifically, keeps well without preservatives, and is brimming with fibre, as much vitamin C as four oranges and more potassium than a banana, plus a host of other health-boosting phytonutrients. The goodness of guava is about more than the delicately flavoured flesh, however: the leaves of the guava tree have long been used to treat diarrhoea, diabetes and obesity and the seeds can be dried and used as a stomach cleanser. Now also cultivated throughout Asia and in parts of southern Europe, these humble fruits are highly versatile. Because of their high pectin content (a natural thickening agent) guavas make great jellies and jams, but are equally delicious eaten raw: slice them up and savour the sweet soft flesh in its natural state, jazz them up with a squeeze of lime, or add them to your morning smoothie. Alternatively, take a leaf out of India’s cookbook and sprinkle an under ripe guava with a little salt and chilli for a tangy healthy snack. Delicious!

FRESH AND LOCAL GUAVA AND MANGO DAIQUIRI: Karl Fitzgerald, Head bartender at the Lobster Pot

Fresh guava and mango puree 1.5 oz Appleton Special Rum 0.5 oz Banana Liquor Fresh squeezed lime juice Pour all ingredients over ice into blender and mix. Enjoy responsibly.

GUAVA GLAZED GRILLED SHRIMP INGREDIENTS 6 tbsp mild-flavored, light molasses 3 tbs guava jam 1 1/2 tbsp butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 3 tbsp plus 2 tsp finely grated lime peel 32 uncooked medium shrimp, peeled, deveined Fine sea salt PREPARATION Glaze and shrimp can be made 8 hours ahead. Cover separately and chill. METHOD Microwave (approx 20 sec) molasses, jam and butter in medium bowl until melted. Stir to blend. Stir lime peel into glaze. Thread 4 shrimp onto each skewer. Prepare barbecue (medium-high heat). Sprinkle shrimp with sea salt. Place 3 tbsp glaze in bowl; set aside. Brush shrimp with some of remaining glaze. Grill shrimp until just opaque in centre (approx. 2 minutes per side), basting occasionally with glaze. Drizzle with reserved glaze and serve. RL

O

ur bodies are weird and wonderful, intricately interconnected organisms. Reflexology is based on the theory that different areas of the feet, hands and ears represent different parts of the body. By manipulating these reflex points, one can alleviate symptoms in the corresponding body part. It’s a practice that can be traced back thousands of years, probably originating in China. Whilst reflexology does not claim to diagnose or cure disease, the theory is that ill-health is the result of blocked ‘qi’ or vital energy, and massaging key points on the feet or hands helps clear the blockage which in turn enables the body to heal. In the West, reflexology has become a popular complimentary therapy in recent decades and can help with everything from stress and anxiety to pain relief, high blood pressure, digestive issues, kidney function and sinusitis.

MY SUNSHINE Aussie artist Ren Seffer’s portrayals of familiar places and pastimes in Cayman are alive with movement and energy. Words by Natasha Were.

R

endered in vivid tones and bold brushstrokes, Ren Seffer’s artwork seems to pulsate with life and laughter. Enchantingly whimsical and almost naive in its simplicity, her body of work shows life on Cayman as the artist experiences it. Whether it’s a Sunday beach scene, friends chatting on the dock or snorkellers drifting over a reef, there is a light heartedness and effervescence in her canvasses that is instantly endearing. Although she often depicts well-known locations around Cayman, such as Heritage Kitchen in West Bay, the Lighthouse at Breakers

and Miss Lassie’s in South Sound, Seffer paints entirely from her imagination, back in her studio. The creative process is an energetic one with music playing, constant movement and swift work, applying multiple layers of acrylics to canvas, to create the deep, saturated colours that characterise her work. She doesn’t sketch or take photographs but transfers the images in her mind’s eye directly to the canvas, as quickly as possible, to ensure that she captures the emotion of the moment.

Even in her more generic scenes of catboats cruising on turquoise seas, fishermen cleaning their catch or Caribbean cottages in the moonlight, the tones she uses clearly evoke a mood, whether it’s a sense of serenity, frivolity or industrious activity. In the 20 years that she has been painting full time, Seffer’s style has inevitably evolved but it was only after Hurricane Ivan, she says, that she really found her stylistic identity. “That’s when I felt like I had something to say, something to offer and so I started moving in a different direction,” she recalls. Seffer began painting a good deal more than two decades ago, however. Born and raised on the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne, Australia, she grew up in a family where all forms of artistic expression were encouraged. “There was a never-ending aroma of linseed oil from mum painting and dad engineering something creative in his workshop,” she recalls, and as a child she learned the piano, ceramics and textiles. A third generation artist - her mother was a portrait artist, her father a metal sculptor and both her grandfathers were talented painters in their time - it was perhaps inevitable then that she would also feel compelled to create art. However, as so often happens, life events steered her on a different course initially.

When, at the age of 14, her father passed away, she was taken out of high school and sent to a secretarial college. By the time she was 16 she was working at a law firm, where she remained for several years. Fortunately for Ren, her boss shared her creative, restless spirit and would let her go off travelling for months at a time, keeping her job open for her when she returned. Ultimately, however, a one-way ticket and undiscovered shores proved to be the greater draw. That adventure led her to Cayman and a new life that enabled her to follow her vocation and paint full time. Her art, she says, reflects her personality – there’s lots of vitality and activity in her paintings - and more than a hint of humour. This is perhaps most apparent in the way she includes her beloved dogs in her paintings. Gidget, a white rescue dog, shared her owner’s wandering ways, and would frequently go walkabout in the neighbourhood, becoming something of a local celebrity. And so it was then that Ren began to paint her, and later Bindi, the new studio mascot, into local scenes. In some ways reminiscent of children’s Where’s Wally? books, one sometimes has to search for the little white and brown dogs in the busy scenes. They’re not the main protagonists and they don’t appear in every painting, but they do often slip into the background almost unnoticed, inevitably bringing a smile to those who recognise these canine cameo appearances. It is the openness, the personality and the sense of fun that is incorporated into every piece of work that makes Seffer’s art so distinctive and appealing. Sunny, light and energetic, she captures the essence of everything she – and no doubt so many others – love about Caribbean life.
