erched on a ridge, overlooking a verdant gully filled with mahogany trees and the sparkling Caribbean Sea beyond, Atelier House’s clean lines and plain white frame stand in stark contrast to the prevailing architectural style of Barbados. Located in the desirable parish of St. James, less than half a mile from the white sand beaches of the island’s west coast and enjoying an elevated position above a protected wildlife zone, the uncompromisingly contemporary design makes ample use of glass and stone and a simple colour palette, to maximise
magnificent views and emphasise the vibrant blues and greens of the Caribbean landscape. A creative, design conscious couple, London based Sean O’Halloran and Amanda Snow had long admired the tropical modern style of architecture originating from South America and dreamed of building a holiday home of their own. When a prime piece of real estate became available in Barbados, they did not hesitate to act.

Their combined experience (he was raised in a family involved in construction, and has worked as an artist and graphic designer; she is an interior designer) made them ideally qualified to play a central role in the process. Alistair Downie, of Harper Downie Associates, a UK-based architect who had designed other properties on the island, convinced the couple in just a few sketches that he was the man to turn their vision into a reality. Together, the three came up with a layout and framework that would fully exploit the natural advantages of the site’s aspect, elevation and vistas.

Siting the villa as close to the ridge as possible, the infinity pool appears to cascade into the gully, while the building’s form echoes the shape of the plot. The central living area is angled to catch the setting sun and bedroom views embrace the forested hillsides. Every window and doorway has been precisely positioned to frame a different view – be it a glimpse into another part of the home, the pool or the sea – ensuring “visual treats” at every turn. Floor-toceiling glass panes and continuous limestone flooring inside and out all combine to soften the boundaries between indoors and out, creating an open, flowing sense of space. Nowhere is this more dramatically expressed than in the double-height living area where huge picture windows stretch the length of the room directly above sliding glass doors, effectively creating a vast, retractable wall between the kitchen and pool deck. Sophisticated yet relaxing, the owners enjoy using Atelier House for family vacations with their four children as much as for socialising with friends. The four-bedroom, three bathroom home is both spacious enough to entertain in, yet intimate enough to offer seclusion when it is sought, be it reclining on a shady day bed on the roof terrace, tucked up with a book in the mezzanine study or drinking in the view from one of the comfortable clusters of seating outdoors. Crisp white interiors and plenty of light answer the owners’ desire for a design reminiscent of an art gallery, whilst also providing the ideal space for the couple to showcase their creative talents: O’Halloran’s own paintings, alongside the works of other contemporary artists adorn the walls, and Snow’s eclectic collection of furniture pieces collated over the years and across continents, is given space to shine.

New, commissioned and up-cycled pieces fit together seamlessly against a neutral backdrop. “Atelier House gave us the opportunity to mix mid-century modern classics, one-off design pieces and a few bargain finds in the way that we wanted to,” says O’Halloran. Intimately involved in every aspect of the design and construction, from custom stonework to garden landscaping, their dream Caribbean retreat has been a true labour of love. A striking landmark on Barbados’s west coast, the home’s shining white edifice stands as a beacon of modernity, a testament to their unique vision and style. RL

Paradise Found
Nandana, an oriental oasis on Grand Bahama, offers its city-dwelling owners an exotic oceanfront escape. Words by Natasha Were
T
aking place of pride on a narrow spit of land with the open ocean shimmering in front and a deep-water canal behind it, is a beach mansion that transcends time and place. Nandana’s soaring peaked roofs, intricate woodcarvings and extensive use of teak are unmistakably Asian, yet this sumptuous home is nowhere near the orient. Rather, it sits, elegant but solid, on a secluded private estate at the western end of Grand Bahama.
PARADISE FOUND | 29
RL
The oriental theme, which is visible not only in the overall design but in every detail – from the fabrics and carefully selected objets d’art to the 250 year old Javanese front doors – was inspired by the owners’ extensive travels in South East Asia, and in particular a visit to silk entrepreneur Jim Thompson’s house (now a museum) in Bangkok. “We fell in love with Thai style and architecture and wanted the same feeling of complete serenity closer to home,” say the owners, Patrick and Gigi Salisbury. Finding the tranquillity and seclusion they sought, along with the ease of access and proximity to their permanent home in New York in an oceanfront plot on Old Bahama Bay, they enlisted the services of Hawaii-based architect, Mark de Reus, to create a tropical beach mansion that would evoke the exoticism of the east, but adapted to fit their western lifestyles. The result is a commanding 10,000-square-foot property where east and west have merged, and where seemingly opposing qualities coexist easily: sturdy yet delicate, spacious yet intimate, there is as much privacy as there is party potential. The main pavilion, with towering 40-foot ceilings supported by giant wooden columns, each hewn from a single tree, is the social heart of the home. This central building houses the kitchen, dining room, living room, bar and glass-fronted wine room, with glass doors opening onto the extensive beachfront pool deck. RL
PARADISE FOUND | 31
Teak reigns supreme in the main house, where vaulted ceilings and floors, not to mention the walls, are encased in the tropical hardwood. The beauty of natural wood held such appeal for the owners – being surrounded by wood is peaceful, they say, and under bare feet, it feels soft – that they shipped eight containers of Burmese teak to The Bahamas and set up a mill on site. Over the course of two years, 20 ship carpenters from Germany cut, shaped and fitted every piece of wood that went into creating Nandana. The mellow honey tones are the perfect counterpoint to the Great Hall’s grand proportions, ensuring a sense of intimacy despite the scale, while the startling blues of sky and sea outdoors offer a fresh, cool contrast to the teak. Outside, a 120-foot infinity pool that spans the length of the house and cascades silently onto their private beach takes centre stage, with each of the four separate bedroom pavilions oriented towards it.

Each bedroom suite is self-contained, with en suite bathrooms equipped with indoor/outdoor showers, some featuring private patios and Jacuzzi bath tubs, one with its own plunge pool and another with floor-to-ceiling glass walls on two sides that can be magically and fully retracted, opening the room to the elements. A fifth, quite different sleeping option located on the canal side, is the 2,000 square foot Canopy Suite. A spacious safari-style tent, which includes a sitting area, bedroom and bathroom, under what seems like acres of billowing white canvas and cotton, is undeniably romantic – and just a little bit daring. Complete with modern conveniences like air-conditioning, Internet and television, it is a concept the owners came across on a trip to India and decided to recreate in their own personal haven. Many of the antiques, sculptures, silks and paintings that grace the property were collected by the Salisburys on voyages through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, India and Africa. In creating their oriental retreat in the west, they also designed the perfect canvas against which to display their travel treasures; in return, the keepsakes give the sumptuous property a uniquely personal touch. Both magnificent and intimate, opulent yet informal, Nandana captures the spirit of the East, but anchors it firmly in the west. A tropical sanctuary offering every imaginable luxury, total privacy and a wholly restful experience, Nandana more than lives up to its name – the Sanskrit word for ‘paradise’. RL

The result is that my style is a fusion of classic contemporary eclectic. I like my design to create conversation, so a challenge is always welcome. I dare to be different. RL: Tell us about Liberty Designs. NM: Liberty Designs is unique from all other design companies as we offer bespoke furniture packages at competitive prices. We realised there was a gap in the market for both residential and commercial properties to obtain high-quality, luxurious interiors that were both practical and cost-conscious. RL: Why should one consider bespoke interiors? NM: Bespoke interiors are a great solution for not only making your home your sanctuary, but
to allow your personality to be reflected in the living space. Also designing furniture pieces that are made-to-measure utilise every inch of your home and are a great solution for filling awkward spaces. RL: What are you working on at present? NM: At the moment we are working on highend residential properties across Europe and the Caribbean as well as commercial projects such as restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Casa Luna in Grand Cayman has been a particular pleasure because we did the entire showhome from the studs up. RL: How does working in the Caribbean differ from the UK? NM: It’s very exciting as we are able to use a different colour palette and bring tropical outdoor elements inside. Designing furniture for more open spaces as well as outdoor living is a welcome challenge. Thankfully the business model we’ve created works globally. RL: What are the most exciting things happening in interior design today? NM: Texture in flooring and wall coverings – it can really add depth to a room. And the fact that people are more willing to push design boundaries.
RL: How have new technologies helped you? NM: Infinitely. Computer visualisations have come on leaps and bounds. Now we are able to show a client an “exact photo quality image” by producing computer generated images (CGI’s).

The Importance of Insurance By Evelyn Tibbetts-Farrar, Vice President, Underwriting of Island Heritage. At some point you may have asked, “Do I need insurance?” The simple answer is yes, you do. It protects our loved ones and us when we need it the most. Leaving yourself uninsured puts you in a precarious position, so it is important to understand how insurance works and why it is necessary to have it. Insurance is unlike other commodities as it is intangible. When a company sells an insurance policy, they are selling you a promise, a pledge that in the face of a loss you will be indemnified, as well as the peace of mind knowing that you will be able to get back on your feet. For many people it would be possible to recover financially after a relatively small loss; however, where insurance really comes to the rescue is in the event of an expensive financial catastrophe. The absolute necessity of having insurance in the Caribbean region was demonstrated in the Cayman Islands during the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in 2004, which left a trail of destruction. Almost 85% of the buildings in the RL
Cayman Islands were severely damaged or destroyed completely. The Cayman Islands faced many challenges during the rebuilding effort, but amazingly, in just a few months following this devastation tremendous progress had been made towards recovery. The community showed remarkable resilience and spirit in their efforts to rebuild, and the local insurance companies played an important part in the recovery process – the Island would not have been able to recover in such a timely manner if not for insurance. Based on reports from the insurance companies, the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority estimates a total payout of $1.15 billion to insureds. When choosing an insurance company it is important to ensure that they are well prepared for such disasters with high limits of reinsurance and a strong panel of reinsurers to allow for timely processed customer claims and continued service long after the effects of the disaster have passed. It is also important to select an insurance
company that provides policies that are specifically tailored to your region’s vulnerabilities. For example, Island Heritage was the first company in the Caribbean to exclusively target the property insurance market, providing a wide range of residential and commercial policies with a special emphasis on catastrophe insurance. Another thing to keep in mind is that by signing with a larger insurance company you are often able to acquire lower annual rates by way of their ability to offer multiple packages on property and casualty, life and health insurance. The larger insurance companies are also often more reliable due to their larger asset holdings. A matter of importance should the company’s financial stability and ability to meet all its obligations when events of a catastrophic nature occur. Regardless of which insurance company you choose to sign with, what matters most is that you have insurance. Life is full of unexpected moments; make sure you and your loved ones are protected when it matters most.

Architects Shaping the Caribbean
Designing buildings, whether homes or workplaces, recreational or civic spaces, is a both a privilege and a responsibility: when architects dream up an edifice, they are creating something where there was nothing and, in so doing, they are irrevocably altering the natural landscape. Yet in giving substance to a vision, and creating a building that answers to the needs of the people, the climate and the demands of the times, they are also developing much more than a building – they are creating a style that will in future come to be recognised as representative of that region or period in history. The following architects are shaping the Caribbean of the 21st century. Words by Natasha Were
R.A. SHAW DESIGNS LTD.
R.A. Shaw Designs Ltd. has built its reputation on building dreams. Established in Turks and Caicos (TCI) in 1998, the full service designconstruction firm specialises in luxury residential projects that embrace tropical living at its best. Uninspired by the industrial and commercial designs that launched his career, founder Ron Shaw changed course 18 years ago, realising his true passion lay in designing residential villas, large and small. Not satisfied with the quality of construction he was seeing in TCI, Shaw then established his own project management and construction firm, making R.A. Shaw Designs the only single source design-build firm in TCI. Staffed by a team of talented designers and skilled craftsmen, R.A. Shaw Design’s attention to detail in every project is unparalleled, ensuring quality, precision and ultimate functionality. His designs, which include the award-winning 30,000 square foot Emerald Cay project and a 14,000 square foot Asian-style home currently under construction, have earned him ample press coverage and a number of awards for architecture and design. Shying away from subscribing to any particular style, Shaw prefers to take the time to identify his clients’ true preferences and tailors the design to their tastes. This ability to listen and form solid relationships with his clients has earned him contracts not only throughout the islands of TCI but also in The Bahamas, British Virgin Islands and as far afield as Mauritius. OBM INTERNATIONAL
Despite having offices around the globe today, no matter where OBM International’s visionaries, designers and architects may be working, their intent remains the same as that set out by its Bermudian founders almost 80 years ago: to create a sense of place. The oldest and largest architectural firm in the region, OBM International is firmly rooted in the Caribbean and, having trained or employed much of the talent in the region, is proud to have played a central role in raising the bar for architecture across the islands. With a multitude of awards for both residential and commercial projects, including the Robb Report’s Best of the Best award for The Cliffs at Oil Nut Bay, BVI, OBM International
are undisputed leaders in design excellence, something they attribute to a combination of technical know-how and passion for the profession. Each and every project, regardless of location, scale or style, takes into account the history, culture and environment of the site, so that the final end will be an experience, a destination with a story all its own. SPRINGLINE ARCHITECTS, LLC Springline Architects, LLC has been creating spaces to live, work and play since 2002. One of the largest design-build firms in the US Virgin Islands, and now licensed to practice in the British Virgin Islands, Springline was founded when St. Thomas-based independent architects Tracy Roberts, Mike de Haas and Kevin Qualls decided to pool their talents and varying areas of expertise. In the ensuing 12 years, the partners’ different backgrounds have enabled the firm to take on all manner of projects ranging from renovations of renowned resorts such USVI's Caneel Bay and The Westin St. John, to private residences, schools, churches, theatres and condominiums, some of which have been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest. A love of the Caribbean and a respect for the natural environment run like a constant thread through every one of the firm’s projects. Regardless of scale or budget, Springline aims to ensure that designs fit seamlessly into the region’s landscape and are built in a manner that is socially and environmentally responsible. Staying abreast of innovations in green technologies is a priority for Springline Architects, and the firm is proud to incorporate LEED design principles into their work whenever possible. Their new architecture office, located in Smith Bay, St. Thomas, is the first building to have received a LEED Platinum certification in the territory. ROBERT TOWELL ARCHITECTure & Design LTD. Sleek, simple designs that are modern yet timeless are the hallmarks of Robert Towell’s architectural style. A great admirer of mid-20th century architecture, his preference is for streamlined, clean lines and an absence of intricate embellishments. Originally from Canada, Towell spent the early years of his career working on theatre, cinema and bank projects as well as upscale residential homes in Toronto, before moving to Bermuda in 1994. Having relocated to Grand Cayman 17 years ago, and now heading up his own firm with a large portfolio of residential and commercial projects, Towell can rightly claim to have played a part in shaping the Cayman Islands as they are today. Towell is the creative force behind the iconic designs such as the Crystal Cove development. The luxury contemporary homes illustrate the architect’s preference for sharp lines, and extensive use of glass and aluminium, integrated with tropical hardwoods and natural stone to create stylish but relaxed residences. In addition to having recently designed the newest phase of the Morritt’s resort in Grand Cayman’s East End, the firm is also involved in what will be a state-of-the-art ‘Minus 5 Ice Bar’ in George Town – the interior of which will be made almost entirely of ice and kept at sub-zero temperatures. | BUILDING A LEGACY
Building a Legacy Turks & Caicos developer, Stan Hartling, dares to be different and reaps the rewards with his luxury resorts. Words by Natasha Were
W
hen the Hartling Group broke ground on The Shore Club, their most recent project on Providenciales (Provo), Turks and Caicos (TCI) in January 2014, it was an event as unique as the high calibre resort development will be. Instead of laying on a lavish spread for dozens of VIPs and local dignitaries, Stan Hartling, CEO of the Hartling Group, chose to invite 250 local high school graduates to the event. Designed as an educational day for young people entering the workforce, it gave them the opportunity not only to witness the very beginning of a resort development, but also to attend a special careers expo, where local firms involved in resort development and operations were on hand to offer advice and guidance to the young job-seekers. Community involvement is of paramount importance to Hartling and in addition to events such as this one, and his participation with the Provo Hockey League, his firm supports a number of non-profit foundations. “Being involved with the community makes me feel part of the fabric of life here,” he says. “There is a purpose to what we do, and we can see the results of our efforts,
RL
especially in such a small place. It’s rewarding.” Originally from Nova Scotia, Canada, Hartling has been calling Provo home for 18 years. He first visited the island in 1996 to attend a tax seminar, but the pristine beaches, friendly people and easy going lifestyle were quick to work their charm and before long he had bought six acres of undeveloped beachfront. An experienced property developer – he had built a portfolio of shopping malls and subdivisions in Canada by his early 30s – he had a nose for a good deal and knew in his gut that the island was approaching a critical mass. “There were only two or three developments on Grace Bay then; the golf course was in place though, and new restaurants were opening and staying open. The timing was right,” he recalls. Indeed, nowadays the spectacular five mile stretch of Grace Bay is backed by dozens of high-end condos and resorts, two of which – the swish Regent Palms resort and the plantation-style villa development of The Sands – were developed by the Hartling Group. Having dabbled in fine arts and music, qualified as a chartered accountant
and then moved in to the property business, Hartling has an eye for design, a head for numbers and a shrewd business sense, but more than that, his success can be attributed to the fact that he is not afraid to take a different approach. “The Shore Club is a prime example of my tendency to throw away the spreadsheet and look at what the market wants: the niche right now is in high-end, boutique, give-mesomething-really-special properties,” he explains. “So we think about how we would create that special product.” Taking luxury to another level entirely, The Shore Club will comprise 38 high-end condos and six spacious villas connected by underground passageways, enabling staff to move around unseen. It is the “lack of focus on density,” as Hartling puts it, that will really distinguish the development, however. Spread across nine acres of virgin beachfront at Long Bay Beach, the developers will use only about 50 per cent of the approved density for the property, something that, as time goes by, will become increasingly rare. “There may be only one or two examples of this, ever, in Provo,” Hartling observes. “Our clients see the value of something that is unique in the long term and are willing to pay more for it.” He knows what his clients want – the luxury Caribbean vacation home with the peace of mind of managed ownership, an income stream from the rental programme and a viable long term investment – and that is what he delivers. “The value of a property is more than the cabinetry or the quality of construction. If you look at what creates long term value growth it’s impossible to ignore the management and maintenance of the property post-opening,” Hartling explains. His first TCI project, The Sands on Grace Bay, looks better today, he says, than it did when it opened 15 years ago – proof that he is in it for the long run. A self-confessed control freak, Hartling admits that not many people would still want to be sitting in on AGMs a decade after a project is complete, but for him, it is just another phase in the life of the development, and he thrives on being involved in every phase: design, construction, sales and operations. Hartling has approached both the design and the management of his resorts from a unique perspective – the perspective of a client seeking a long-term investment. The result is a series of awardwinning luxury resorts that will stand the test of time, where owners buy into a whole leisure experience, not just bricks and mortar. His success to date is ample proof that his unique approach to real estate development works, and that daring to be different pays off. Cool to the touch, easy to clean and available in a plethora of colours, textures and mediums, there is little surprise that tiles are the floor and wall covering of choice in many Caribbean homes. From their earliest recorded use in 14,000 BC Mesopotamia to more modern times, tiles have played a functional yet design-conscious role in dwellings the world around. From traditional, clay-fired ceramic tiles with handpainted ornate glazes and designs, to modern mosaics made of glass tiles with luxury inlays, these water- and heat-proof wonders seamlessly combine durability with design. Words by Emma Spencer-Smith
NEW RAVENNA Fashion-forward, handcrafted and assembled using the finest quality stone and glass, New Ravenna mosaics are as much a work of art as a functional wall or floor covering. Rubrik, by founder and creative director Sara Baldwin, uses jewel glass shown in Pearl, Schist, and Lavastone to recreate the illusion of 17th century parquet flooring, while Erin Adam’s whimsical Floating Fish, casts the design net wide with a waterjet and hand-cut glass mosaic made from Mica, Sardonyx, Pearl, Quartz and Garnet, to add life to your walls. Loom, inspired by Ikat textiles, elegantly combines brilliant colours and light reflective glass for an edgy, clean vibe.

Luxury Words by Laura Collacott
ou have to resist overshelling,” says Amanda Lindroth, a Bahamas based interior designer with an enviable raft of Caribbean restoration projects to her name. “Resist the orange coral!” she urges. For over 20 years Lindroth has incorporated elements from local Caribbean vernacular to highlight her cool, classic interiors, capturing an elegance that brings a new slant to colonial island style. Her projects evoke an age of civility: of shaded verandas, home-made lemonade and high tea on sandy shores. “I am strong on comfort and high-low mix,” she explains; “my interiors do not look like they came from a catalogue.” Calling her style “under-decorated,” she melds traditional sensibilities with fresh modern living. “I would describe my style as island classic. I like interiors that are timeless and I love vintage furniture mixed with good upholstery, books, greenery, straw mats and lots of white.” Few people look at peacock chairs with such flair as Lindroth.
RL
Firmly embracing al fresco island life in her casually refined design schemes, she emphasises that you should play to your advantages. “The Caribbean has a strong light that makes it unique. And so our houses here are full of light and air and breeze. It’s special.” Never one to rest on her laurels, Lindroth continues to seek inspiration in all quarters, from the annals of history to today’s blogs. “I am currently in love with a few designers’ work,” she confesses. “Michele Bonan from Florence, Jean Louis Didiot from Paris and Veere Greeney from London.” A junk shop fiend for many years, Lindroth was a regular at the antique haunts while living in London as a bright-eyed fashion journalist and PR consultant in the late 80s. “I would ride my bike to the Bonham’s Lots Road auction house each week. It was the cheapo saleroom but there were always treasures. It was a hoot. I really miss that part of urban life.” A far cry from Europe’s flea markets, Lindroth moved to The Bahamas in 1992 at which time her treasure hunting had to go virtual, especially after discovering a strong commercial demand for her unforced décor. “I love junking in Florida but never get to go anymore. Instead I junk on websites at night. I’m addicted!”
Her energy for the endless projects she undertakes is palpable: “I never unwind.” she declares. Perpetually in motion, Lindroth’s latest project, the cabanas at Schooner Bay, is a fine example of what she does best. From the outside, the rush-reed capped, clapboard beach huts look unassuming, but within they are effortless chic. Whitewashed boards form a blank backdrop to overstuffed sofas, blue and white fabrics, teak furniture peppered with ocean-inspired accents, tea stained maps adorn the walls, and, of course, Lindroth’s signature – antique rattan. Evoking a bygone era, her elegant, inviting interiors embrace Caribbean culture and lifestyle to soulful effect – low caye luxury indeed. RL

Sunshine & shadows
Grenada based artist, Judith Jarvis, brings to light her adopted home’s vibrant characters and quotidian rhythms. Words by Natasha Were

unshine and shadows, expressive faces and the rhythm of daily life radiate from Judith Jarvis’s giant canvasses. Whether it is vendors selling their wares at the market, fishermen hauling in their nets or a dog resting in the cool shadow of a boat, the artist captures life in mid-flow on Grenada. Although not native to the island (Jarvis is British born and has twice been short listed for the BP Awards at The National Portrait Gallery in London, and has lived in Grenada since 2006) she depicts the people and their lifestyle so authentically that, in viewing them, one feels a profound sense of place, as if one can feel the heat, smell the aromas and sense the easy pace of life. “I’m a travel painter at heart,” she says. “I’ve always loved wandering the world and when I paint scenes from places I have visited it brings back the sensations, the excitement of travelling.” Just as a photo-journalist documents a story through candid, spontaneous photos, Jarvis’ paintings reproduce quintessentially Caribbean scenes, in a natural, un-posed manner to capture the prosaic beauty of life’s daily pulse. It is the deliberate inclusion of imperfections – the paintwork on the boats that is faded and flaking; the dry, dead palm fronds lying tangled in the undergrowth, or the stained, pitted wall of the fish market – that make the scenes so real. Although not aiming to be photographic in style, Jarvis does take scores of photos before starting each piece. She then sifts through them, enlarging some, cropping others and moving different elements around until the composition satisfies her fascination with textures and surfaces, colour and lighting.

“I don’t paint unless there is something interesting happening with the light,” she says. “Without that there are no tones and the picture looks flat.” In order to adequately reproduce the play of sunlight and shadow, the reflection of light on skin, the pearly sheen of a freshly caught fish or the lucid glow of a wet T-shirt clinging to a torso, Jarvis paints on a large scale – many of her paintings are on canvasses measuring approximately 6’ by 4’. Even as a child, she recalls, her drawings could not be confined to the page, and years spent working in theatre, painting vast stage sets and backcloths, have only reinforced this need for dramatically oversized artistic expression. Beyond her mastery of the technical, what makes Jarvis’ art so remarkable is a deep resonance that pervades each work. Engaging her subjects, she talks to and sketches them for hours, unearthing stories contained within to know the individuals behind the faces to compose a painting that reflects their unique personality. In the same way that a travel writer aims to convey the essence of a destination through the sounds, smells, tastes and characters he finds there, in Grenada Jarvis does the same through oil paints and canvas. Brimming with colour and character, sunlight and warmth, her art transports the viewer directly into the genuine, unedited lives and activities of Grenadian islanders.

THE BAHAMAS - FORT FINCASTLE Crowning Bennet Hill, Fort Fincastle is the highest point on island and was built in 1793 to guard Nassau and Paradise Island. Mounted with two 12 pounder cannons, two 24 pounders, two 32 pounders, and one howitzer, the battery was named after Lord Dunmore’s second title, Viscount Fincastle. Shaped like a paddle-steamer, it overlooks the Queen’s staircase and later served as a lighthouse until 1817 when it then became a signal station. Affording exceptional panoramic views of the ocean, town and harbour below, the 126-foot high fort is a well worth the climb. Open Sunday to Saturday 8 am–4 pm and holidays. Phone: (242)356.9085.
CAYMAN ISLANDS - PEDRO ST. JAMES Step back in time at Pedro St. James, an 18th century Great House built by wealthy Englishman, William Eden. Set upon seven acres high above the sea on a limestone bluff, it is home to Cayman’s oldest surviving stone structure and is affectionately called ‘Pedro Castle’ by the locals. Also known as the “birth place of democracy in the Cayman Islands,” nowadays visitors can wander through the lovingly restored home, complete with period furniture, marvelling at authentic 19th century building techniques as well as poke around a 100-year-old wattle and daub home, a 20th century Caymanian cottage, a traditional outdoor kitchen with caboose as well as learn much more from their state-of-the-art multimedia sensory theatre. Open daily from 9 am–5 pm. Phone: (345) 947.3329. www.pedrostjames.ky
JAMAICA - ACCOMPONG VILLAGE Perched high in the hills of St. Elizabeth Parish, is Accompong Village, home of the Maroons. Founded around 1655 by runaway slaves originally brought to the island by Spanish colonialists, they fled to the mountains rather than be enslaved by the invading British. Joining other escaped slaves and indigenous Taíno Indians, the Maroons were instrumental in the fight for freedom from enslavement, signing the Peace Treaty in 1739. Today they continue to live independently on tax-free lands granted by the treaty, governed by their own laws and share practices and culture similar to that of their ancient forefathers. Every January 6th they celebrate the birthday of Cudjoe, the Maroon leader who led them to victory over the British in 1738. Visitors to this “land within a land” are welcome to tour the village. TURKS & CAICOS - LIGHTHOUSE Guarding the northern tip of Grand Turk, is a lighthouse designed by Alexander Gordon and brought over piece by piece from the UK in 1852. Carefully restored in 1998, the still functional lighthouse and keeper’s house are now protected by the National Trust. A rare example of early cast iron design, the original oil lamps were first replaced with kerosene and later electrified for brighter illumination during storms. This was a critical modification as the shallow reef that extends from the island caused many shipwrecks over the years when the faint oil lamps’ light was swallowed up in stormy weather. Now a beloved picnic spot, the lighthouse is also an excellent place for whale watching in February and March. Open whenever a cruise ship is in harbour.
Historic Monuments BARBADOS - ST. NICHOLAS ABBEY US VIRGIN ISLANDS - HASSEL ISLAND When next in St. Thomas make sure to visit Hassel Island. Separated from the mainland in the 1860’s to improve the harbour’s water circulation, the island boasts a history rich in military and mercantile happenings. Now almost exclusively owned by the National Park Service, except for three private holdings, it is a prime spot for a walking tour, taking in various historic sites such as the Creque Marine Railway, an abandonded leprosarium, old garrison house as well as multiple batteries. Ideal for an open-air picnic, the isle offers the opportunity to experience local history while making new memories. To learn more, visit: www.hasselisland.org
One of only three genuine Jacobean mansions in the western hemisphere, St. Nicholas Abbey is nestled on lush Cherry Tree Hill mere steps from the historic avenue of Mahogany trees and offers exquisite views of the ocean beyond. Built in 1660 by Colonel Benjamin Berringer, the home is an architectual gem that includes typical Jacobean features such as elegant curvilinear gables, as well as a wealth of interesting antiques and artifacts dating back to the 1800’s. Home to a sugar museum and rum distillery, where St. Nicholas Abbey Rum is produced, the expansive 400 acre grounds is also a working plantation that include an orchard, sugar cane fields and garden, where they grow produce for the grounds’ Terrace Café. Open 6 days per week; closed on Saturdays: 10 am–3.30 pm. www.stnicholasabbey.com RL
