Types of courses At UCR, we offer a variety of different courses and routes to gain your higher education qualifications. Here are some of the options.
We offer several types of degrees, so you are sure to find one that is right for you
Bachelor’s Degrees — BSc (Hons) or BA (Hons) Bachelor’s degrees take three years to complete (if studying full-time). Students on bachelor’s degrees learn complex concepts, and how to critique and analyse them at a high level. You will also develop your research and investigative skills, as well as your transferable skills to take into a workplace context. Bachelor’s students usually complete a dissertation at final year. Foundation Degree — FdSc or FdA Foundation degrees take two years to complete and are slightly more vocationallyfocused than a bachelor’s degree. They tend to offer technically-driven content and focus on employability skills through work-based learning modules. Bachelor’s Degree Top-Ups — BSc (Hons) Top-Up Upon successful completion of a foundation degree, students are offered the option of completing a final ‘top-up’ year of study, to obtain a full honour’s degree. Higher National Diplomas — HND A Higher National Diploma (HND) is a vocationally-focused higher education qualification that is equivalent to a foundation degree and which takes two years to complete.

Bachelor’s Degrees with a Foundation Year If you want to study a full bachelor’s degree but do not yet meet the entry requirements to start at first year, a degree with an initial Foundation Year might be the right option for you. These courses introduce you to higher education-level study and help prepare you for degree-level work before starting fully. Access to Higher Education Our Access to Higher Education course is a flexible programme largely designed for adult students who wish to return to education, or those who need further academic credit before they progress onto study at degree level.
